383.1Getting to the end of the first kingdomGSRC::WESTVariables don't, Constants aren'tMon Jan 01 1990 22:4513
  Well I've only made thru the first kingdom once. The problem I have is with
defeating King Totomesu, King of the first kingdom.

  The only time I defeated him is when I had superball power. If you should
lose this power towards the end does anyone know if it is possible to find
another flower after the "coin pyramid" ??

  Or has someone discovered another method of defeating the king ?? I've
tried jumping over and running under with absolutely no success.

383.2spoiler to get past the kingBANZAI::JANOSIKTrust in OrangeWed Jan 03 1990 15:2629

I have gotten under the King, by waiting 'till he jumps, then running
fast (the b button, i think) and jumping on the platform behind him.

my daughter claims to have jumped over him.

ps. i am using decwindows notes, so i'm not sure how to 'hide' spoilers.
383.3Jump over him!!CARTUN::VALENTINEWed Jan 03 1990 18:0314
    I have had no problem jumping over the king every time (almost) I try.
    Just like SMB, you have to push B button while you move right, then
    push A button when you want to jump. You go faster and higher that
    way. Try 'rolling' your thumb to the A button while still pressing B.
    You'll get the knack quickly.

    I'm proud to say that I've gotten to World 4 level 2 several times, but
    that's it. Can't wait to see what other surprises they've packed into
    this little cartridge. Ain't miniaturization wonderful??

    I also bought the recharger/AC adapter. It's well worth the money.

    Happy jumping.

    After about 30 hours practice (three sets of batteries) I've actually
    *seen* the boss in 4-3. To get there I needed about 18 lives (I'm
    kinda slow). What *I* really need is a good warp -- it takes about a
    half-hour just to get to the final world...

    I wish there were more time spent in the submarine or the airplane, but
    aside from that, this is a really neat game!
383.5Got the BIG BOSS fair and square!CARTUN::VALENTINEWed Jan 10 1990 17:327
    I got there, I saw him (it?) and nailed him! There's no trick- you
    just avoid what he throws at you and keep firing. Suddenly he poofs
    like all the other bosses and you've won!!

    There is more- a neat ending which I won't spoil here.

    Any more good Game Boy cartridges??
383.6I love riding boulders !!!GSRC::WESTVariables don't, Constants aren'tMon Jan 22 1990 11:2715
  Well, I've finally made it Kingdom 3...but haven't made it all the way to
the end of 3-2 just yet.

  Does anyone have any clues as to what's in 3-1 or 3-2 ?? I've only found
one *big* coin room and a mushroom.

Spoiler (mild) for 1-3 ...

  I've found two elevators here. One of them is right at the start of 3-1.

    For .6 -- If you ride one of those elevators to
    the top and drop down the pipe, there is a U-shaped structure with
    coins in it. If you carefully smash the right hand vertical pile of
    bricks, you'll find a 1-up mushroom in the very top one. You have to
    push B-button while running and then jump in order to get high enough.

    If you do get through the whole game, there are credits that roll like
    the end of a movie. Then if you start again without turning the game
    off, the worlds are the same, but there are more "creatures" at every
    turn. They of course make it harder, but by then you need the added
    challenge!

    	Okay i've gotten to the end of world 4-3 and have beaten the
    cloud guy but then....here comes King Whatever in his magnificant
    flying-shooting machine and I last about 5 seconds. How in the world
    do you beat him? I am not the only one having trouble here my good

    Well, I'm the good friend in the previous note and just last night I
    finally killed King Tatanga. I didn't find any trick, just keep
    shooting and dodging. Actually, I felt he was a little easier to
    kill than the guy hiding in the cloud, its just that by the time you
    finally get to Tatanga you've used up everything you got so you can't
    make many mistakes.

    The little cartoon and credits at the end are cute. Then as someone
    else said, the game starts over with a lot more critters to kill.
    It seems to stay in this mode untill you turn the game off although I
    haven't been able to verify that. You can tell the difference on the
    START screen because the cursor is a Mario face instead of a mushroon.
    I sure wish you could warp to this since it takes about an hour to get
    here.

    Although I've killed Tatanga, I'm sure there are things I missed along
    the way. Particulary along the top of the screen in the jungle and in
    China. I found one elevator in the jungle, but it doesn't get you
    much. I would appreciate any spoilers here.

    Now I have some tips (not really spoilers) if you get to world 4...

    In 4-1
    when you start to go down a pipe, press the right arrow as you fall.

    In 4-2
    its impossible to get all coins the without fireballs.

    	I don't own a gameboy but I read acouple of things
    	about it in Electronic Gaming Monthly.

    	I won't consider this a spoiler since it only shows
    	how to continue and level select.

    				Continue
    				========
    	The continue in Super Mario Land is identical to that of the
    	Super Mario Brs. Simply hold down the 'A' button then press
    	start, I believe this lets you continue from the begining of
    	the level you died on.

    				Level Select
    				=============
    To select any level of play you must 1st beat the game and rescue
    the Princess twice. A screen selector will appear next to the
    start prompt to let you know it worked.

	There are severalareas in SML filled with items that seem

	On level 2-2, it appears that the lower level is unattainable

  RE: .-1

  The rope/chain you pointed out is really coins !!...just jump off the platform
onto the column of coins and collect 'em...just watch out for the turtle when
coming down.

  Also...have you found a good/quick way to go underneath if you are Super
Mario ?? I usually try to become regular Mario before this so it is easier
to run thru.

383.16Hints on getting by the last king?ACESMK::POZZETTAFri Jul 19 1991 14:1714

Can anyone share their strategy on how to get by the last king? I've been
trying to shoot-n-dodge-em and I've lost dozens of lives just trying to get
past his cloud protector. I've only seen the actual king three times and they
were short-lived.

What do you do to win? Do you stay on the bottom or the top? When do you shoot
and when do you dodge? Do you shoot rapid fire or with careful aim? Do you
shoot the birds or dodge-em?

Henry

Re: .16

Henry,

My strategy to get by is kind of simple (at least as far as the clouds).

Possible SPOILER (after form feed)

To get past the "cloud protector" once I get into the area where he is
located, I go down to the back bottom corner. I stay there firing rapid
fire when he is within range of my weapon for about three or four times
that he comes down to the bottom. Then I go straight up, at the same time
that he goes up, to the top back corner firing at him. I then stay there
for a couple of times and then go back down again to the bottom back
corner, at the same time that he goes down, firing at him. I then stay
there and fire at him when he is nearing the bottom until he dies.

It gets a lot more tricky after that when you have to fight the big boss.

Possible SPOILER (after form feed)

When I get to the big boss I am somewhat less methodical and there is a lot
more luck involved. However, I find that if I go down to the bottom back
corner again, firing while I go down, and stay there for a short time and
watch his firing pattern closely. He misses shooting a round every so
often (I can't remember for sure but I think it is something like every 7th
round or so) and you have to take that advantage to move up firing. You
want to move up part of the way at a time (like about a little over half of
the screen) and then pause and then move up the rest of the way to the top
back corner, firing continuously. Then you want to stay there for only a
brief time and then move back down to the bottom back corner in the same
manner. Then you have to do it all over again, and again, etc., until he
finally dies. It takes a lot of practice, patience and dying to get past him.
However, when you finally do it is really worth it.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

Rick

    The lifts I know are in levels 1 and 3.Tthere are probbaly
    more, though. The first one is in level 1-3.There are two, actually.
    The first lift is as soon as you get on the level go to the left
    right after the collection of blocks.Then jump up. The second one
    on level 1-3 :the second row of blocks where the lion is sitting
    go to the third punch block and punch that; then jump up. the one on
      3-2 is hard to explain.Okay,ya here with me?On the top left theres a
    tube; coming at you is one of those spider thingies.Well after you kill
    the spider;go to the middle punch block between two coins.Punch the
    coins,then the block.Then jump up where the punch block was

    	Hope I was some help.
