Cartridge adapter are available in certain Canadian markets at present,

perhaps one of our Japanese friends can tell us if it's released

| Yes it is SMB III Famicon Cartridge. As a matter of fact, a friend
visited Chinatown in Toronto and said he saw stores selling FAMICON
cartridges for half the price you pay for a NINTENDO cartridge. Of
course you need the adapter which goes for about $25.00 Canadian.
We'll be looking into this a little more. There's also a rumour of
someone selling them in Ottawa also.

365.7 | Japan SMB-3 = USA SMB-4 | RAVEN1::TIMMONS | | Thu Dec 07 1989 20:18 | 8 |
| By the way, the SMB 2 in the US is NOT the SMB 2 in Japan. SMB 2
in the US is an alteraration of another game with a title something
like "Dream Factory". The real SMB 2 has never been released in the
US. Therefore, that would make the Japanese SMB 2 really be SMB 3 in
the US and therefore the Japanese SMB 3 would indeed be SMB 4 in the
US. This note should prevent any further confusion (or add to it).

The info I think you are looking for is in note 136.30. I would rather
wait for the U.S. version. I don't like the idea of no instruction
booklet. The latest issue of Nintendo Power (Nov/Dec) states that
SMBIII will be released in 1990. More details will follow in the
next issue.

As soon as I have some news, I will post it to this topic. I'll try to

to get my hands on one.
I'll let you know.

365.11 | Opinion on SMB-III/IV | TROC01::WALDNER | | Fri Jan 12 1990 19:34 | 45 |
| My son's friend, Gene, got the SMB-III game as a gift for Christmas from a
friend and I have it running on the TV next to my terminal at this very moment.
As already described, it is a Japanese version with a half-size module which
requires an adaptor piece. Prices in Toronto are $89.00 CDN and the adaptor
costs another $16.00 CDN. Yeah, the Japanese cartridges are generally cheaper,
but at $89, SMB-III did not seem to be a good idea. I'll wait for the English
version.
Here are a few of Gene's observations about the game itself. The game is made
up of a series of game 'boards' in which Mario (or Luigi) can move about to
select challenges, each one different. These are much like the individual
levels, i.e. 4-2, etc but you don't have to finish them in a particular
sequence. At the end of the challenge there is a revolving prize and you
just get a result by chance. One of the prizes is a 'card'. When you collect
3 cards, you have a chance to win a 1-up or a 5-up bonus.
The play itself is similar to SMB-I, and II, except that Mario can acquire
racoon tail, frog, wings, statue and other characteristics that he can use in
a variety of ways. For example, with a racoon tail, when Mario turns about, his
tail can be used like a whip to crack open question marks for money or defeat
various baddies. In addition to walk and jump, he can fly (only with the racoon
tail), slide down inclines (and wipe out more baddies) and bounce on musical
note boxes. Like SMB-I, there are pipes, but you can also slide upward into
a pipe going up as well as slide down a down-pipe.
Graphics are about the same as SMB-I and II and many of the characters seem
familiar. There seem to be a lot of 1-up's and it is easy to gain 10 or 15
lives without too much work. Gene thinks the game is too easy, but has not
yet finished it off. There are dialogue boxes which come up from time to time
to give info and prompt you with a question. However, this being a Japanese
version, he has no ideas what these messages might say. Other than that, scores
and stats and the opening logo are in English.
My suggestion..... wait for the English version but I don't think it will
surpass SMB-I, although Gene thinks its better.
BTW, the same stores also carry little disk cartridges with games that can
be loaded with a little disk adaptor. I think that these are for Famicom, which
they also carried, but I am not sure. These game disks sold for $15 - $20 each.
Hope this was helpful.
regards
Frank

365.14 | Mario Baby ? | CURIE::BERNIER | | Mon Feb 19 1990 21:55 | 22 |
|
Hi,
I just played a game called Mario Baby.
I rented this game from a video store, it is in Japanese and came
with no instruction. I think its a Famicom cartridge because it
uses an adapter for the US Nes. Its a cute game, the main
character is a baby and he must move across the screen while
hitting badies with a rattle until he gets to the end boss, who
is a big pig. You must hit him with the small pigs he shoots at you
(you hit the smaller pigs with your rattle and them bump into them
until they hit the big pig and knock him down 3-4 times)
There is a level select built into this game also.
It plays a lot like the Mario series, power ups etc.
Could this be Japans Mario IV ?

| Well, we've all been waiting aptiently for the new Mario game to
appear (regardless of it's number) and I for one haven't seen it yet?
Anybody out there actually seen the new Mario game in the stores?
If so, what's it called, and how much??? Has anyone bought it,
and if so, what's it like??? Of all the Nintendo games in the world,
I like the original Mario Bros. best...not the later version (called
Dream Factory) but the good ol' Mario Bros. where the little guys
are plumbers and work their way thru the pipes, etc...
If anyone's seen the latest and greatest, PLEASE TELL ME!
Thanks,

SMB III!!!
I have this game and it is great! Mario can FLY. I've only played
it a couple of times and made it to world 2. What a game! the box
is yellow with a big mario on the cover. Kaybe toy stores $49.95
and well worth it. In world 1 you go through 3 sections and then
to Toad's house, he gives you special gifts to help you. For
instance... if you get a leaf, you can fly through the next screen
and collect all kinds of coins. There are also special items up
in the sky. so FLY, FLY, FLY.

| While walking thru the Nintendo section at the Auburn Toys R Us last
Thursday during lunch, the clerk had just put out SMBIII - there were
50 tickets - according to the clerk. Without hesitation, I plucked
1 - $49.99 and raced home to show my daughter (son was in school).
After dinner, I decided to pick up another copy - called Toys R Us to
be sure they were still available (since I live about 27 miles away)
and was told they sold out in 2 hours!!! Must have been when school
let out! They could have charged $59.99 and still sold out as fast!
It comes in a bright yellow box with Mario (ears and tail) on the
front. I watched my son and daughter play it over the weekend.
Perhaps tonight I will watch again and take some notes (and lessons)
and enter a write-up in the MARIO 3 file (#136).

| Dear Co-moderator,
If your note was referring to .19 saying that he would post spoilers in
the SMB III note, please be aware of the confusion over exactly which
number SMB this recent release is! Perhaps we should have renamed this
note "the next available SMB version"...
I'll be looking in the note file mentioned by .19 for the spoilers but
don't feel the admonition was necessary, especially given the mass
confusion over SMB I (which was really SMB II), SMB II (which was
really the Dream Factory and not SMB at all), the variety of Japanese
versions which aren't available in the States, etc...

| Whoa! Hold on there a minute! My 'mouth' got away from me...
My previous reply could easily be interpretted as a flame on the
moderators of this notefile, and that wasn't my intent. I'm simply
a little frustrated by the 'confusion factor' surrounding the SMB
numbering sequence.
In my humble opinion, the moderators are doing a fine job, and I
fully appreciate the fact that without them, we wouldn't have these
great notesfiles at all, so please keep up the good work!

365.24 | This is IT!!!!!! | HESIRI::CERLING | Infinitely Interesting | Thu Feb 14 1991 17:24 | 53 |
| I was browsing through a B. Dalton booksellers store, and I found an
issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly that had a 4-page article about a
japanese Super Famicom cartrige entitled SUPER MARIO WORLD. There is no
doubt in my mind that this cartrige will be our SMB 4.
Here are some details:
There are 8 worlds in this game. They are (in order): Dino Island,
Donut world, Vanilla Dome, Cheese Bridge, Lost Forest, Star World,
Chocolate Island, and Soda Dam. You move around in them using world
maps, as in SMB 3. There are normal worlds, mini-fortresses,
ghosthouses, and other special worlds.
Mario's special powers: the usual, like running, ducking, jumping,
etc. If he gets a mushroom, he becomes super Mario. He can get a Fire
Flower and shoot fireballs. The new power-up is a cape feather, which
allow you to fly, float, whack enemies with your cape, parachute, and
divebomb.
Mario can also team up with a dinosaur! If you open an egg, a baby dino
appears. If you pick him up and feed him 5 turtles, he'll grow up and
you can ride and control him. If you make him eat a red turtle, he'll
be able to spit fire. Feed him a blue turtle, and he can fly. A yellow
one, and he gets Super Stomp (whatever that is).
some of the items:
coins (100 for a free life)
Dragon coin (has dragon face on it - 5 on same level for free life)
mushroom
fire flower
cape feather (gives cape)
1-up mushroom
3-up moon
egg (open for baby dino)
acorn (feed dino 5 - he'll lay an egg)
starman
spring board (jump higher - can carry it)
power balloon (inflates mario so he can float around)
note block
star block (hit with 30 or more coins for free life)
surprise block (turns dotted lines into blocks)
message block (give hint and tips)
spinning block (hit it - it spins so you cant stand on it)
switch block (blocks to coins and vice versa)
question block
winged blocks (fly around)
multi block (item inside change continuously)
on/off block (turns traps and things on and off)
There is a lot more, but I don't think I could fit it all in a single
note! If you want to find out more, find issue #19 of Electronic Gaming
Monthly.

| I have placed in this note a little bit of good news and a hunk of bad
news. Do not destroy anything expensive as you read the bad news,
please.
Good news:
Mario 4 is a 16-bit game. (Or somewhere around 16.)
Bad, awful, terribly unfair news:
It needs a totally different control deck. (calm down!)
I saw a picture of the deck in a magazine. It looks something like an
Atari. Its controller has a control pad, start and select buttons, and
the A, B, X, and Y buttons.
My guess as to the price would be anywhere from $150 to $200. (Stop
throwing things - you almost hit that lamp!)
Anybody who wants this apparently fanstastic game had better save up to
buy the deck and game pak.

| My, all seems quite quiet, indeed.
To tell you more -
Super Mario World is wonderful, no, wonderful*9E+99! It's definitely
the best of the SMBs yet. This series gets better and better.
I beat the game in two days, but I still think it was well worth the -
gasp - two hundred dollars. It would have taken me longer, but your
game can be saved.
I have found 96 exits, counting Koopa, and I think that's a record. I
plan on trying to send a photo to Nintendo Power.
The game is, as I mentioned before, wonderful. The music and sound is
great, better than anything I've ever heard before. Ghosthouses have
horror-movie-like music. Castles and fortresses have music like a
suspense movie. The rest of the music is also impressive. The
programmers must have spent forever on this detailed audio stimuli - it
has everything, right down to echoes underground!
The grphics are amazing, also. At times, at least half the screen is
moving at once and nothing slows down. All the colors make everything
cartoon-like. The backgrounds are fascinating. It's all too colossal,
too perfect, too impossibly unbelievable to put in a few measly little
paragraphs.
Buy this - It Is Definitely Worth It. You'll be eagerly playing for
months, years.
My Rating: ****
On a scale of 1 to 10:
Graphics 10
Sound 11
Challenge 8
Imagination 11
Control 10
Overall 10
Mario - the ultimate in fun.
