346.1Atari can't hold a candle...PELKEY::PELKEYLife aint for the squeamishTue Nov 14 1989 11:2723
	1. Is it that much better than the atari and therefore more
    		likely to be used as something other than a
    		dust collector?
    	2. Is a used machine that you see advertised worth purchasing?
    		Do they "wear out"? How do I know if it is functional?
    		And what kind of money are we talking for a used one?

	1. Absolutely. If you're referring to an atari 2600, the
	difference between the two cannot be expressed in words!

	2. Probably worth it if the price was right.

	  I can't see what in the deck would 'wear out' however,
	the controllers are probably more suspect to wear, but ours have
	held up quite well in about a year of heavy use

	A new game, with light gun, and twin game pack is probably available
	for approx 99 dollars. You can even find them on sale for less if
	you shop around.

	The cost that'll be more of a problem then the game deck are the
	game packs themselves. They average between 39 to 50 dollars.
346.2Watch out for progress.TLE::FUELLEMANNSoftware engineers put the 'soft' in software.Tue Nov 14 1989 14:2311

    One way the machine could "wear out" is by becoming obsolete.
    This is what happened to the Atari 2600. This will probably
    happen to the NES once Nintendo comes out with their 16-Bit
    system.

    	I bought an NES about 2 months ago and it is obsolete
    already. *sigh* I saw the NEC 16-Bit system and all I can
    say is: "Oh My."

346.3Check out Note 3.***...DEMON::CHALMERSSki or die...Tue Nov 14 1989 15:5910
    If interested in used equipment, check out note 3 in this conference.
    Two units were recently advertised for sale: one without the light-gun
    and 'Duck Hunt' for $50 and one with the gun and Duck Hunt for $70.

    And yes, if the price on the new generation of 16-bit machines drops
    over time, the current system will probably become obsolete in a few
    years. However, they currently cost $170+ dollars, as compared to the
    $50 (used)/$100 (new) cost for the 'low-end' units.

    RE: .2

    You will never stay ahead of the video biz.
    So do not worry about it. Think about what you
    really get with a new 16-bit machine if it is
    NEC (not NES) or SEGA. Twice the cost, 1/10 the
    games, one controller, and so on. The ol's NINTENDO
    still stands as the best for the buck. Tons of games !

    If you want hi-tech get a PC and go crazy. Besides, with
    a PC you can do much more than games.

346.5where to buySOJU::CHRISTENSENdtn 264-1954Wed Nov 15 1989 09:247
    Ok, I'm convinced...

    So, since the ones in note 3 seem to be gone, is there any place to
    buy used ones, (other than watching this file - which I will do)?

    Or for that matter new ones at a discount?

346.6Basic set goes on sale...CASPRO::MINEZZIWed Nov 15 1989 12:036

    Watch the stores for sales....every now and then the basic set (usually
    about 99 dollars) goes on sale for 79 dollars. Especially around
    Christmas time.

346.8New 'Pack' for $89HPSTEK::CYGANMon Nov 20 1989 12:377
    Lechmere's is selling the NES action pack for $99.95, with a special
    offer of 10% off of THAT for (thru Wed, ONLY).

    So, for $89.99 for the pack doesn't seem TOO bad!

    The NES is not obsolete and likely won't become obsolete 'till NES
    begins to market a 16-bit machine (next year?).

    	But it's days are already numbered. . .

    	There is only one problem w/ these new 16-bit
    systems - they are EXPENSIVE.

    	re: -.1

    	Yeah, and buying the games will send you to the "poor house"
    	pretty fast, too. BTW, I think the 16-bit NES is supposed to
    	be released in Japan this Summer, and maybe in the U.S. in
    	time for next Christmas. The TGX-16 and the Genesis look
    	pretty tempting, but I'm going to try and hold out for the
    	Super-Famicom to make it's U.S. debut.
