345.0. "Desert Commander" by CREKE::GEORGE (a great team finds a way to win) Mon Nov 13 1989 12:49
Has anyone out there in Nintendo-land played "Desert Commander"
yet? I rented it this weekend and actually enjoyed it. It's kinda
slow, but a total strategy game. I noticed that when you play the
computer, it moves irrationally. Here is a brief descrip of how
it works...
Best played with two people, each player gets an army of equal
strength. (Exception: in one scenario one player gets a force half
the size of his/her opponent.) You have five different scenarios
to choose from, each offering a different landscape and sized force.
To begin, you can adjust your forces by how many of each unit you
want. You can choose from infantry, armor, armored cars, supply
trucks, troop transports, fighters, bombers, anti-aircraft guns,
field artillery, and you get a headquarters unit. Once you've chosen
your armies, you brawl! Each person moves one at a time, you move
as many or as little units you wish. Terrain is a factor in movement
and defense capability. You then have to destroy your opponents
headquarters unit, usually after defeating his/her forces. The
game can take anywhere from a half hour to an hour, depending on
how you choose your strategy.
If anyone has played this game, how did you like it? Also,
did I miss anything of importance or does anyone have any hints
on stategy, etc.?

| I haven't played "Desert Commander" in a couple of months, but my two
buddies and I have found it entertaining and a nice diversion from some
of the more intense games. There are some counter-intuitive combat
results. I vaguely remember that the jeep[-mounted machine gun] does a
pretty good job of disposing planes. Just ferreting out these oddities
is worth a few rentals (I happened to buy).
The non-elementary computer scenarios can be *tough*, especially when
you realize how outnumbered you are. And then the opposing
headquarters hides itself in a "corner" square, and the only way to get
at it is with planes (that says something about how you ought to
apportion your forces during startup).
What I found most annoying was how the screen adjusts itself so that
the piece you're trying to command is in the center. I wish there were
a "command mode" rather than always "menu mode" in giving instructions.
And sometimes...you don't want to move a piece yet but you accidently
"drop" it, and you can't countermand.
When you're done with this, try "Nobunaga's Revenge."

I'll have to try "Nobunaga's Revenge", I assume it's similar
to Desert Commander in some respect.

| Hello,
I had rented Desert Comander a couple of weeks ago, and found it
to be very challenging. Startegy games are my favorite and I would
like to know more about this "Nobunaga's Revenge". Could someone
please let me know a little about the game? Is it a strategy game?
And is it at all challenging?
thanks

| I own Desert Commander and have found it quite fun to play. Here
are some of the pointers that I have learned and will share with
you.
1) In the last four senarios you will be greatly outnumbered, trade
in you troops and transports for bombers and fighter planes and
anti-aircraft.
2) If you attack a unit from the side or rear it seems to be at
a disadvantage.
3) Moving ground units into towns not only replenishes thier supplies
but adds to their strenght (ie a tank unit of 3 units going into
a towm may leave the town as 7 unit strong). This is also true
of aircraft and landing strips.
4) Bunkers are really great places to keep your headquaters.
5) Never leave anything on a road, it appears that the defense
of the unit will be diminished.
Best....Art
