343.0. "Black Bass" by IDAHO::HOLT (Adam Holt) Sun Nov 12 1989 18:26

Has anyone played the new game called Black Bass that my
friend told me about? My father thinks that it would be a good game
since he doesn't like the fast action ones.

This game doesn't sound very interesting. Although I haven't played it,
how can a game on fishing be worth anything? A game like this couldn't
have any challenge so how can this game be any fun? This game would not
keep my intrest very long. In my opinion this game would not be worth
the $40 you would have to pay for it.

As I said, my father doesn't like fast action games, even games
like Link, but prefers games like golf.

I wasn't trying to get on your case. I was just saying that fishing is
more luck than , the game probably is the same way. Try some of e of
    the new golf games.

Does anyone know where I can get Black Bass? My son-in-law is an avid
fisherman and I'd like to get it for him for Christmas. Local stores
don't seem to have heard of it.

Thanks,

Betty

343.6Anyone playing this game??CSSE::BOLTONFri Jan 12 1990 12:3214
Has anybody played this game?? I mean I have rented it, and was hoping
that somebody else has played so we could discuss some different
strategies. I have made it all the way to the "A" level tournaments,
and have even landed a 16lb. bass, but there is one bass that no matter
what I do it just keeps on running away from me. This sucker must be
huge!! has anybody landed a bass larger than this one?? If so what
did you do to get the sucker into the net??

Overall I love this game, but am sure getting frustrated about the "one
that got away". Anybody who is an avid fisherperson I think would
enjoy this game a great deal. I can't wait until I find the game in
one of the stores so I can buy it.

The Nintendo store in Burlington, MA had about 15 copies
aruond the very beginning of the month for $42.99. I was going to
buy it but decided to try renting it first, which I haven't done
    yet.

343.8A FEW QUESTIONSDESTOP::MCNULTYTue Jan 23 1990 07:5013
I need some help. Every time I get a big fish on I lose my lure, (by
breaking the line I assume.) How do I give the fish some line to run
with? Also will I get the other lures as I advance to the next
tournament? One more ? what is the red bar for at the bottom of the
screen for? By the way the biggest fish I've caught was a 13ib brown
trout. Also is there a penalty for catching small bass?

                                                   thanks in advance.

343.9Maybe this will help?CLUSTA::FAUCHERTue Jan 23 1990 12:1846
    Hi Mike,

Being a bassin' fanatic, I had to buy this game, so far I think its
    great!

Now to try and answer at least 2 of your questions....

The red bar is a "meter" (if you will) that will determine the
strength of your cast... for example, the first time you hit the
"A" button, the bar then goes and increases/decreases... you then hit
the "A" button a 2nd time when the bar length is at the power you wish
to exert for the cast (ie; the longer the red bar, the farther the
case, the shorter the red bar, the shorter the cast). So timing is a
factor... you want to 'freeze' the bar at the cast strength you wish to
    utilize for that cast.

In regards to the other lures, I believe (having only played the game
twice since I got it last weekend) that the lure selection may depend on
the time of day (they mention in the booklet something about using the
sinking lures during "X" part of the day, and floaters during another
part of the day... thus far it seems I have only been able to use
the floater types (ie; frog, pencil and shallow runner) you are
    fishing.

In regards to losing the fish, have you tried using the "B" button
(supposedly the "B" button acts as a brake, ie; thumbing the reel, so
to speak)... perhaps that would help?

Also, if your "line stress" bells go off, back off on reeling in...
ie; by pumping... I tried hitting the "A" button on and off,, I guess
this is sort of like "playing the fish"... so, I hit the "A" button,
get the buzzer, then I sort of have an idea as to how long I should
hold the "A" button in, etc...

Again, I have only played the game twice, so if I am off track on
anything,... anyone that has more scoop, please let us know.

I am still rated as a "C", biggest bass landed ---> (2 of 'em) 3.3lbs.
Largest overall fish has been -------> 6.5 lbs Brown trout.

Still in the first lake, I can't recall what ranking I am in (200?).

     Hope this helps a bit.

343.10Some suggestions...CSSE::BOLTONTue Jan 23 1990 12:2333
    RE:-1

Just in case someone views this as a spoiler I will hide my suggestions
    behind some form-feeds...

There are a couple of things I do when lunker hunting...usually this is
when you are fishing the "A" level tournaments. Shorten your casts.
This will give you more room to let a large fish run. Also, if the
fish isn't a bass try and unhook it instead of fighting it. To unhook
a fish just press the SELECT button(sometimes this won't work in B and
C level tournaments). This can not only save you time, but lures.
The thing to remember when fighting a large fish is not to put to much
pressure on the line. I usually reel until I hear the alaram go off.
If the fish should try and run on you, try to reel against his run.
If you hear the alarm go off, another method is to press and release
the reel button frequently. Sometimes you have no choice, but to try
and hold the fish by using the brake button. However, be careful when
using the brake button it puts pressure on the line, and makes it
harder for you to reel in the fish. I find that just resting for a minute
without braking I can reel in more line the next time I try reeling.

Yes...you do get more lures as you advance in your tournament levels.
In the "A" level you will have all the lures that you see on your menu.

As far as I know there is no penalty for catching small bass, but it
certainly doesn't help your standings in the tournament.

    Hope this helps out...

343.11A couple more gotchasGENRAL::HUNTERfrom SUNNY Colorado, WayneFri Jan 26 1990 17:2617
    	Spoilers follow (possibly)

Being a fisherman, many of the things in the game are directly taken
    from fishing. NUFF SAID.

To keep from breaking the line while reeling in a fish. Let up on the
A button for a short period of time. If, when you press it again, you
get an immediate BEEP, let off. Wait a short period of time and press
again. When fighting a fish, you just can't keep reeling. If a fish
JUMPS, IMMEDIATELY get off the A button or you lose a lure.

Dark lures, Dark days. Early or late in the day, top water. Mid-day
deep. I just rented it (since I missed my chance to get one here at
CXO) and made it into the A lakes. DISCLAIMER, I have fished all my
life, so, that helped. Largest bass was only 7.9 pounds with one 18
    pound German Brown.

least 15 copies as of Saturday(27th). It is priced at $42.99...sure
glad I finally got my hands on one(no more renting of this game).

     Hi again,

How do you go about getting into the other lakes?

What ranking level do you need to obtain, and approx. how many, or of
what size bass do you need to gain acceptance to another of the
lakes? I am still in Lake Amada (only played 4-5 times now, but hope to
begin playing a little more frequently.

                                        Thanks,

343.14Up thru the ranks...CSSE::BOLTONMon Feb 12 1990 12:2124
    RE: -1

To gain access to the other lakes you must improve your ranking in each
tournament. How does one improve his/her ranking you might ask. Well
by catching as many fish(Bass only) as you can in the time alotted for
each tournament. So, if you hook something other than a bass get rid
of it! Obviously the bigger the bass the better...remember you are in
a tournament, and total weight is what will improve your ranking.

The following list is a rough idea of what rank you need to fish the
    different lakes.

    Rank Lake

    200-100	Lake Amada
    100-50	Lake Japan
    50+below	Lake Moore, San Lake

The biggest fish you can catch are in the last two lakes listed. I
have caught bass up to 16lbs from these lakes, and have lost fish I
    beleive to be even larger!

    Have Fun,

    Hi fellow Bass fishers!

I have had this game for about a month and have gotten to the A
lakes every time. I too find it frustrating to lose a BIG one.
The biggest I've gotten is a 15.9 lb, but lost many others that
    were bigger.

    My suggestions are as follows:

When you first play the game, cast out as far as you can go to see
what the "lay of the water" is. This is so you know how far a fish
can go before you run out of line.

To find the "good" spots, move to a likely area and cast short,
then reel in and check the spot listing --#2 on the menu.

When you cast for real, don't cast out too far. This allows you
to reel in a fish quickly when you get one on the line. Saves time
to catch another one!! Also, if you get a big Bass on the line
close to the boat, it seems to be easier to bring it in.

Like other replies stated, reel in in short bursts, it seems to
tire the fish faster. Also, I use the brake often if the fish
tends to run. I brake the line then reel a little, then brake,
then reel. This works best on large bass.

All I can think of at the moment. If anyone has more suggestions,
    please! let us know!!

    Have fun,

    Debbi

My wife would be very happy if someone had this game and was tired
of it. She got hooked very quickly. She loves to fish anyway. She
has gotten to the B lakes. We just don't want to spend the $45 to buy
it new if somebody wants to get rid of it.

    	btw.

How long is an actual round. I haven't bothered timing it but it
seems to take about 45 mins. to an hour.

343.17Any good news?RAZZLD::giffordWhen nature calls you have to answerMon Feb 24 1992 14:1611
This note has been idle for too long. I've been looking high and low
for this game with no luck. There is a toy dealer in Spencer Ma. that
told me (actually my wife) just before Christmas, that this game was
going to be re-released some time in early '92. Has anyone else heard
this. If so, any timeframe of the release. If not, If ANYONE knows of a
copy of this sitting around collecting dust, I'd be interested in
picking it up.

Thanks,

Tom G.

Well I finally found a copy. They must have re-released it 'cause the
Fair had a few copies. I bought it this weekend and played a couple of
times. If you're not a fisherman this is a booring game, but, I am
a fisherman so it is very enjoyable.

I have a question though, I noticed that the "shallow running" lure
decends as you work it back and forth with the arrow buttons but when
you start to reel it rises back to the surface. Is there any way to get
it down to a certain level and keep it there? The best I've been able
to od is to work it back and forth to keep it within a 1-1.5 ft range
    of the depth I want.

    Thanks for any hints.
