318.1 | Had a Hard Time Getting Started | CSOA1::AYLWARD | Brian Aylward, Ohio Valley DWT | Tue Nov 28 1989 11:05 | 14 |
| It took an hour just to figure out how to kill something and begin
to build up experience points. I have not gotten any farther than
that yet.
It appears that you need to build up magic and life before you can
do anything else.
Don't just stand there and push the attack button. You need to
be moving in the direction you are attacking, so be pushing the
control pad and the attack button at the same time.

| Does anyone know how to get into castles?
Hints for game: Go back and forth to kill the slimes.
When you have enough magic to activate, fire and look
for the cross. Hope this helps.
I do not play the game but my son does and this is
a hint from him.

Wanted to give this game a go since I had seen some good things
written about it, so I rented it for a couple of nights. Hydlide
is an adventure game visually similar to _The Adventures of Link_
overworld. The map is not nearly as extensive and the scrolling
from section to section is a bit herky-jerky. The object of the
game is to search and find three jewels, various other implements
to assist you in your quest and to save a fair maiden from evil.
Sound familiar?
As a previous noter complained, it takes awhile to master the
attack/defend technique in battling the various monsters. To build
up the experience/life/magic meters required tedious and repetitious
battles one section at a time. The graphics are below average and
the game play was too easy.
However, my biggest complaint with the game was the save/load/password
implementation. It was a nuisance to constantly have to save data
manually. When your character expires, instead of resuming where you
left off, you have to load in from the point you saved the game. If you
don't save frequently, you may find that you have to redo quite a bit.
Here's a real gotcha. If you don't register a password frequently
(in addition to the save function), you can lose quite a bit. Last night
after building up my levels for about an hour, Jim (the main character)
gets knocked off in a battle. The scene then resumes to the start
of the game where I accidently triggered save instead of load. Well,
what it saved what was the start of the game, levels back to zero!! At
that point I gave up on it and enjoyed playing _Baseball Stars_ for
awhile.
If I were to give it a rating it would be a 4 out 10 .

318.4 | 2nd Fairy, 3rd Jewel, Dragon | CSOA1::AYLWARD | Brian Aylward, Ohio Valley DWT | Wed May 16 1990 18:06 | 17 |
| After finishing a couple other games, I'm back to working on this one.
At this point, I have run into a couple of snags. I have collected the
following:
1st fairy
3rd fairy
1st jewel
2nd jewel (ring)
and all other objects except medicine
I could use some help on location of 2nd fairy and how to defeat the
dragon (I assume this will take me to where the 3rd jewel is). Has
anybody taken on this game yet besides me?
Thanks,
BJA

| My brother asked me to enter this note for him, but re:-1 entered it
instead!
He too is stuck at the dragon, needs the third jewel, and can't find
the castle with the "black?" knight.
Hint from nintendo guide on beating the dragon follows....
(it didn't work for my brother, but maybe you'll have better luck)
Use Flame on the Dragon!!!!
Good Luck;

318.6 | On Island, But Can't Kill Dragon | CSOA1::AYLWARD | Brian Aylward, Ohio Valley DWT | Sun May 27 1990 15:49 | 35 |
| I have finally found all the fairies and am on the island where the
dragon is. I have gone down into the dungeon below the castle but
haven't had much luck since then (the dragon is still alive).
Spoiler/questions after <ff>
I have burned the tree in front of the castle to reveal the dungeon
entrance and have gone into the dungeon (snuck by the dragon). In the
dungeon, I broke the grave and got back out. Now I cannot get off the
island, I assume because I have still not killed the dragon. I got
its power down by shooting fire at it, but can't kill it.
Any help?
Info on the location of all the fairies follows <FF>...
The first Fairy is in the trees with the bees in them.
The second Fairy is in the moving trees on the island with the snakes.
The third Fairy is held by the two wizards on the island next to the
dragon island. After you have all three fairies, they will carry you
to the dragon island.
Thanks,
BJA

318.7 | Anybody ever finish this game? | DDIF::WALSH | Schedule is Job One | Mon Aug 20 1990 16:49 | 17 |
| Yep - the earlier notes said it all. Poor graphics, jerky scrolling,
and a sub-par adventure, with nothing to give you a hint about what you
need to do. Just wander aimlessly until you think of something that
you haven't tried yet, looking for a monster that will give you
experience when you kill it. Bleah.
Normally, I'm too proud (read that as stubborn) to ask for help, but
I'm not fond of this game and want to "finish" it quickly before I give
it back to my mother. (And curse the day that she lent it to me!)
I've gotten all three fairies, but can't find the second or third
jewels. Any hints? Outright spoilers?
When I go down into the dungeon below the castle, I can't seem to do
anything. An earlier reply said something about "breaking the grave".
I can get there, but can't seem to do anything to it. Do I need more
jewels than I have?

318.8 | HELP!!!! | ZEKE::BOWE | | Thu Nov 08 1990 10:55 | 15 |
| OK, I need help!!
I've gotten everything except the 3rd fairy. My life, strength and
magic are as high as they go. I can't seem to do anything to harm the
two wizards on the island. I've been trying for almost a week, and have
not made a dent in them. Any and all help is appreciated.
Pat.
P.S. - I haven't found the medicine yet, but according to the
instructions, it just gives you an extra life, so I'm assuming it's
not important.
Thanks.

You have to kill the two wizards.
You need to kill them both simultaneously.
There is only one spell that will do this.
Is that enough of a clue?

318.11 | Clues for the third jewel | DDIF::WALSH | TPU knows... RISC/Ultrix! | Tue Jan 15 1991 13:21 | 16 |
| The third jewel:
I've returned this game to my mother, so I might misremember some of
this, but:
There is a dungeon where you ran into a combination of Ladyam's and
Goldams. This is a two screen dungeon. The right-hand screen will,
under certain conditions, have a treasure chest in it.
The chest only appears after you kill a certain number of Ladyams or
Goldams in a row. I don't actually know what the combo is - I just ran
around killing anything that got in my way until the chest appeared.
After the treasure chest appears, you can't kill anything else, or the
chest will go away.

I CANNOT KILL THE WIZARD! I have tried every spell, but they don't
work. I hate these things! I have fairy 1 and 2 and two of the
jewels, ( the one that you get in the grave yard and the one from the
Ladyams). ( my fairys are from the forest and the moving trees beside
the desert.) I have killed everything that I can and cannot get any
more experience.
Help!!

Re-read note 318.9.
- Chris
If that's not enough:
Stand across the river, wait until the two wizards line up, and 'WAVE'
at them.
You'll need to be patient, and you'll probably miss a few times.
Final spoiler:
If you don't have all three stones, you are wasting your time going
aftet the third fairy.

Well, Where in the heck is the 3rd one? I have been all over the

anything else. I have been in all of the dungeons several times and
the varmints won't give me anything else. This game is disgusting!

318.15 | Not worth the effort | DDIF::WALSH | TPU knows... RISC/Ultrix! | Fri Jan 25 1991 11:19 | 24 |
| The biggest spoiler about this game is: Avoid it. Life is too short.
But if you must continue:
I really can't remember where the first two jewels are. The third is
described elsewhere in this note. Move to the right hand side of the
correct dungeon, and kill Goldams and Ladyams until a chest appears.
Make sure you stay in the right hand side! The chest appears in a
little cul-de-sac on the far right hand edge of the dungeon.
The potion is gotten by killing the dragon. You can use fire to hasten
the dragon's demise, but I never bothered. I just attacked him with my
sword (from the side), retreated and healed up, and then repeated the
process until he died.
Do *NOT* lose the potion before meeting the final bad guy!
The black knights are in the final castle. They aren't really that
tough - but taking them on from the front is not very efficient. They
die quite quickly when you sneak up from the sides or back.

I have the 1st & 2nd jewels (Ring). However, I can't find the 3rd jewel.

and I'm stuck.

I just started this last night. I moved up a couple of levels but now
my ep doesn't seem to rise anymore. Do I need to kill tougher monsters
that the kobold, slime and stirge to get it to rise?
Also, I have the cross. DO I need to use it somehow or is just having
it enough. That doesn't seem to work. The guy I want to use it against
kills me everytime.

Just having the cross is enough. Yes, you need to find tougher
monsters to advance in experience. Then the guy that's driving you
batty isn't so hard.

PS: Reread .15. This game goes downhill rapidly.
