311.0. "New Games Too Easy?" by HQPMO::BDIMBAT (Echos in the Night) Wed Aug 16 1989 11:46

Have I gotten that good or are the new games just to easy, aimed at a
       lower level player?

I got to the endgame in Dragon Warrior within two days, though had to
spend 3 more days tiredly building up enough power to take out the
Dragonlord. (and this is the game [DragonQuest] that took Japan by
       storm???)

Faxanadu was better, real fighting, varied screens/terrain etc.
However, it only took three days to finish, sort of like Rygar, fun
       but too short.

Neither game required ANY mapping, there are no complex mazes or
logic problems anyplace. Both games let you continue on if killed
with only minor penalties and no real lose of experience.

One main measure of a game's worth that I use is the number of hours
required to complete it. Many have run in the 100's of hours
category. Finishing in 24 hours of playing time is not enough. I
admit I like exploration/mapping type games and continue on where
others might get 'bored' out, but these new games are just too easy.
I know my 8 year old neighbor will love them. Others will too. I
think I've just become too jaded.

I say DragonQuest is the old (few years old) game.
At that time the cart. has not enough mem.

In famicom,it was the first major R.P.G.
After DraQue,other games made much better ,and it is natural.

I say end of DragonW.I, just entered DragonQuest_World!!!

Functions and map,party became great.

Please play it when it appeared!!

We waiting Draque IV now.

Games too easy? I think it is more that the game player is becoming
better at it. My first game was Zelda and it took me a loooong time
to conquer it. It was hard because it was something that I've never
seen before. When I play the new games now, I know what to expect to
a certain degree, and I know how to approach solving a riddle or
problem or fighting an enemy using the controller. The games are still
difficult, it is just that I've gotten a lot better at playing them.
It is still just as much fun, probably even more so in that I don't
 get as frustrated.

The time issue? A $40 investment for 24 hours of play is fine with me.
Get up near a 100 hours of play time for one game and that is too much.
That's a huge chunk of time that could be spent experiencing some of life's
 other pleasures.

From a Nintendo point of view, I wouldn't make a game that is going
to take so long that the player won't be buying other games for a long
period of time. Also, their big customers are boys age 7-15, not the
most patient people in the world. ;^)

Sounds like the note I started for *game endings* Note 313 could
have easily went here. I seem to be saying the same thing. I didn't
really consider I was getting better. As a matter of fact there
are many games that I can't do let alone *win* at. I am a paitient
person and could take time for a long game but if the game seems
to greatly exceed my ability or willingness for a challenge I give
up on it. For instance I loved the Legend of Zelda but Link didn't
hold my interest. It's like a poor sequel to a good movie.

    Others thoughts, please.

I think a LOT of games are formula games. Computer games have been
around a long time, and some varieties are very well developed. Ultima
Exodus is really Ultima III, so it is definitely a formula game.

Many video game players are seeing these games for the first time, so
they are new and exciting at first. But the formulae start to show
after a few games. Of course, a lot of video games are new, taking
advantage of the graphics not previously available easily even with
computers. And there are some new developments, as with Legend of
Zelda. But even these new things inspire formula sequels.

It is necessary to look harder for interesting games. Look for the
unusual, the novel. When I was rating games, one of my metrics was
uniqueness. Games can be rated as to degree of uniqueness -- the
amount of features/qualities it has which differ from other games and
the value/ingenuity of those qualities. In this sense, there are more
and less unique games. Among Nintendo games, the most unique are
Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, and Tetris. Consider how simple
Tetris is, yet so popular and absorbing. And it is extremely different
from other games on the market.

Other games of notable novelty are Mario Brothers, Adventures of Lolo,
Gyromite, and Wrecking Crew. Games of some novelty are Bomberman,
Wizards and Warriors, Ultima (if you haven't experienced such games
    elsewhere), and Rygar.

BTW, so far the few games I have seen described for the new, advanced
game systems seem merely formula games with fancy graphics.

I have a Sega system and quite a few games. Right now, my "active
list" of games includes Golvellius, King's Quest, and Penguin Land on
the Sega system and Dragon Warrior and Milon's Secret Castle on the
Nintendo. I intend to give Milon's Secret Castle another shot and then
will put it aside whether I finish it or not. That means that right
now, Sega is doing a better job of entertaining than Nintendo is.

However, since new systems are on the way out, I do not recommend
anybody getting a Sega system now. I would advise waiting until the
new systems are all out and all have their initial selection of games
on the market -- then decide about upgrading or possibly buying the old
    Sega system.

I moved this since it seemed more appropriate in this discussion. If
it's believed there should be a seperate note for *GAME ENDINGS*
it's easy enough to move it again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This note is being started to discuss *game endings*.

I was disapponted in the *ending* of ULTIMA for several reasons.

First, I hadn't read the game info well enough to understand that
the intention was to *seal* EXODUS. I guess I expected to *defeat*
    someone.

Second, in other games there is someone to save which gives a sense
of accomplishment. Though with ULTIMA you've *saved* the country
there isn't that *one* person (usually a princess) that applauds
    your victory.

Third, though the ULTIMAN end is a suprise I didn't find it really
dramatic. Especially in light of the perserverence that was needed
    to complete the adventure.

Some questions I might raise are:

Has anyone worried about the ending?

What information on the game box might give a hint about it's end?

Have I played too many games and are now getting to analytical?

    What makes a good ending?

What game/games have the best ending?
