305.0. "Defender Of The Crown." by DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOB () Thu Aug 03 1989 16:22

	I would like to open this topic for discussion on the ULTRA game
cartridge "Defender of the Crown".

	The year is 1149 A.D. Saxon and Norman lords are battling for control
of England. You are asked to role play one of four lords. Two other lords are
on your side that SOMETIMES help in Defense of the Crown. There are three
enemy lords who are vying for the same territory. Whoever wins, becomes King
of England. Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest play a special part in the game.

	Each of the four characters you have to choose from has three rated
categories, Leadership ability, Jousting ability, and Swordplay ability.
Each category has one of four different levels, Weak, Average, Good, and
Strong. Each category has a purpose. Jousting and Swordplay are fairly self
explanatory. Leadership levels are used to determine the fighting ability of
the army when attacking or defending territories and fortresses. The
leadership level can change up or down. During a jousting match you may select
to Joust for Fame or Land held by other lords. If you choose Fame and win,
your leadership level will increase. If during a battle you retreat, you will
lose leadership levels.

	You buy armies which consist of solders, knights, and catapults
with the gold you have accumulated. You can also buy castles to put on
land you have acquired. The amount of land you control determines how much
gold you get after you and the computer take a turn. The more land the
more gold. You can manipulate your army by leaving some to guard fortresses
or territories which you have captured (sorta reminds me of a board game
called RISK) or take the whole army to other territories or castles.

	When in a battle your army strength is determined by its numbers as
well as your characters leadership ability. There are five different fighting
techniques used in a battle. Fierce Attack, Hold Ground, Bombard, Outflank,
and Retreat. When in defense of a fortress you look from inside the castle
perspective and shoot arrows from a crossbow at the oncoming enemy. Strength
in defense of a castle is determined by the number of soldiers only, knights
and catapults don't count, along with your leadership ability.

	You may be called upon to rescue a damsel in distress. You will need
to sharpen you swordplay to be successful. You may select to ignore the request
or try for a rescue attempt. The fair maiden will be forever grateful if you
succeed in rescuing her from the enemy. If you succeed you also win the land
and castle where she was being held captive.

	This game is similar to Star Voyager in that the computer plays after
you have moved. The graphics are AWESOME! I've seen the jousting graphics on
a pay to play video game somewhere, but don't remember which game it was. I
have defeated the computer with two of the characters. Fun Game! I rate it a
solid 8. Lets get some discussion going on this one!

    Does it have a password feature?

305.2No Password needed for this game.DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBMon Aug 07 1989 14:016
    	No Password for this game. You would not play this game for more
    than one hour or so at a time. If it takes longer, you would
    probably be defeated or win yourself. This is somewhat like a
    board game, the objective to win England and become king.

305.3It's Too DifficultPUERTO::BARBUTOSat Aug 19 1989 23:0113
   I just picked up this game from a local eletronic store. I always
    pick Wilfred of Ivanhoe. So far the best I've done is conquer 2 of the
    3 enemy lords. The problem is: the third one always contains vast
    amounts of land and it's too hard to conquer it all. He always has at
    least three castles and conquering them all takes too much time. Spoilers
    are welcome wholehearted. Just wanna finish this one and start with
    my other new games.

   Thanks in advance.

305.4It's Easy!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBMon Aug 21 1989 16:5820
	Hi John,

	  You need to use strategy to defeat the opponents. The thing I
noticed is that the Norman's earn more money for their land than you do for
your land. Each castle of the Saxons earns 3 golds on each turn. The Norman
castles earn 8 golds each turn. I've won with each of the Saxons.

      **** Spoilers Follow ****

	If you defeat the home castle of the enemy all the other territories
which they own becomes your territory. You need, in most cases, to get one
of the enemy territories (their home castle) early in the game. Remember that
Robin Hood can help you in defeating the enemy, when asked, three times.

	Let me know if you need more specifics.

305.5Help on ConqueringPUERTO::BARBUTOMon Aug 21 1989 20:408
  Thanks,Bob. I just need help on something else. How 'bout so tips on
   how to conquer the castles, ( Like how to use the catapult wisely,etc)

  Thanks.

305.6Rock Throwing!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBTue Aug 22 1989 07:2912
    	O.K. Here's how I have found the catapult works best. Check the
    instructions! I have learned by trial and error. When you first
    attack the enemies castle you will see the number of solders in his
    army. Choose you weapon type to launch. The Disease bomb does more
    damage when used early. Then the Greek Fire takes about 10 percent of
    the remaining force each time used. The rocks are strictly a timing
    thing. I count the number of clicks the catapult is drawn back and let
    go around nine or ten for the top of the wall. The next around six or
    seven, and the next four or five. Again, most of this is in the
    instructions so I don't believe that there are any spoilers here.

    Help! Need information/spoilers to figure out this game....
    such as:

    * How do you "buy" an army? I go to that screen, move the cursor
      to "soldiers" and push "A" button but nothing ever seems to
      happen. What am I doing wrong?

    * How do you get help from Robin Hood?

    * Any other hints/spoilers?

    Thanks
    Bob
305.8Here's some info.DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBTue Aug 29 1989 17:1011
    Bob,

    	To buy an army press the A button, and it will change the color of
    the sword. Then you use the left or right arrow of the control pad to
    buy or sell any selections. Press the A button again when finished.
    You can only sell back on the same turn. If you have already bought
    armies etc. you cannot sell them back later. Check out the instructions
    for Robin's help. You must move the cursor to Sherwood Forest in move
    mode. Let me know if you need more help.

   First thing you do in this game is invade lands so you'll have land
   to joust for. Then RAID!!!! This is a effecient way to get money.
   When you have enough money, buy castles for your land, especially the
   ones that pay you the most income, and an army. Then start conquering
   enemy lands, using Robin's help wisely. Call tornaments to gain land
   ( the lands with the most income especially) and leadership points.
   Use the other replys in this notefile to good use,too.
   Feel free to ask me any other questions.

    here's a hint on the seige. First send in the disease, fire, fire, and
    three boulders. The key is to knock as much of the wall as possible, it
    makes a difference in the battle.
