300.1 | I just got it, anyone else? | SPIKED::SWEENEY | | Mon Jul 24 1989 13:50 | 22 |
| I looked for a note for this game and not finding one decided to create one.
Mr. Moderator please feel free to move these notes if I missed the correct
note.
Anyway, was just wondering if anyone else has gotten this game yet. I found it
at Child World in Fitchburg, MA and immediately snatched the next to last copy
they had. Since I was working on finishing SMB I by not warping this weekend,
I didn't spend much time playing this one, only about 15 minutes.
Initial impressions. This game is brought to you by the folks who made Metal
Gear and Defender of the Crown. Pleasantly the graphics and English are better
than that of Metal Gear at least so far. Good colors and definition. The only
weak graphic is the map pinpointing your location. It's hard finding where you
are, but the rest is OK.
Character control is good. Jumping is better and easier than Ninja Gaiden and
I think pick up of character control is easier. Plus you have the choice of
which turtle/weapon you want to use.
Good first impression even though I was thrashed by the first major
bad guy I came across. Can't wait to spend more time with it. Looks like a
winner. More to come....

Thanks to your note, I strong armed the sales clerk at Child World
into holding a copy of TMNT until I got off work and snagged the
last copy last night. The sales clerk said they expect more soon.
Your comparison to Ninja Gaiden is correct. This game has good
graphics and lots of action. Timing your jumps is crucial in order to get
past the fiends at the end of each level.
Although I haven't gotten very far yet, TMNT seems to be a very
good game.

| I got to the underwater sequence last night. I almost made it to the
last bomb but got blown up before I could make it the remaining two
inches. At the time I had one more turtle fully charged, so it looks
like it's possible. I guess it's very important during this sequence to
know when to take the hits instead of waiting for the hazard to clear.
Nintendo Power had a good article on it.
This games is not a metroid or a smb, but it's fairly decent. I'd give
it a 7.

300.4 | maybe even an 8 | ENMLD0::ROSS | | Wed Jul 26 1989 11:03 | 53 |
| After seeing the base note I hi-tailed it over to the
local Child World and picked up this cartridge. I have
rented Ninja Gaiden, and other similar games in the past
and agree with the earlier replies on the comparisons.
Since my kids, especially my son, are nuts for these guys
I figured this would be a good game to buy.
I prefer this game to Ninja Gaiden, maybe because I
"shelled" out the $$$ for it instead of renting it ;-).
I played it for around a hour both Monday and Tuesday
night and got fried in the water both times. I can't get
thru the pink seaweed or whatever that stuff is.
After struggling thru level one and having little left
to go thru the dam and water I tried something that
worked out so that I could start out at the begining of
the level where I lost it. I was able to start at the dam
a couple of times last night instead of at the begining.
I'll hide how I did it behind a form-feed at the end of this reply.
Has anyone figured out which turtle to use against different
enemies? I seem to do O.K. with the one with the Bo and
for one enemy (Bebop or Rocksteady I can't remeber which) I think
its best to find the triple throwing stars as he throws
stuff at you and runs at you allot.
There's one jump that I have trouble with where I
could use some help. The turtle is at the top of the screen
and it has to jump across to a ledge at the same height where
a ladder takes you up to a different section. If you miss it
you end up back at the begining of the section and have to go
thru the whole section again to get to a ladder that leads
to the top level. Anything work good here?
Anyway this is what I did to start at the begining of the
dam section.
Possible Spoiler to follow.
This worked twice, and didn't work once.
Just like Super Mario Bros. - push start and A at the same time.
I am not sure of the timing, that is if you have to do it before
the continue/end screen appears. As I remember it didn't work at
the continue/end screen once but this was late at night and the
details are a little hazy right now, I'll try it again tonite and see.

300.5 | and after another night..... | ENMLD0::ROSS | | Thu Jul 27 1989 01:06 | 25 |
| Well after another 2 hours trying this game last night I am
not sure if my spoiler in the previous reply was accurate.
At the continue/end screen you can push the start button when
the cursor is on the continue and end up starting at the beginning
of the stage where you left off, although I swear once or twice
I would end up right at the beginning of the game when I didn't
do what was in the spoiler.
Progress report -
I got through the dam section three times tonight and got absolutely
nowhere in the next area. I was able to get the Party Wagon
and drive around and shoot and destroy some Roller Cars but I
didn't get very far in either of the sewer sections that I could
get into. The first one I found was in the area where you pick up the
wagon. There's one of those jumps that I can't seem to get used to like
the one I described in the previous reply. When I missed the jump I
just got clobbered. And in the second one I just fell into the water
and floated away and had to start over. I didn't see any ropes that
April talked about in the information screen. I saw an Anti-Foot
Clan Missle but didn't get to it. I'm thinking of getting out of the
Party Wagon and trying to walk through the barricades that block the
path of the Wagon.
Could someone who got to this point let me know what works here?

300.10 | Some questions and comments. | OPUS::PREISIG | | Mon Jul 31 1989 14:39 | 19 |
| I have the same question that was asked several notes back about
jumping to the platform with the ladder. The platform is the same
level as the one you jump from, but for some reason I don't usually
make it on the first try and have to go through the same scene again.
I also have not made it through the water section yet, although
I almost made it once (had one bomb left) before I ran out of time.
The worst part is the pink seaweed. Does this get easier with
practice?
The last comment is about continue. It seems you can only continue
at the level you left off twice. After that, it doesn't give you
the CONTINUE option. The instructions don't mention this. Is there
somwthing else that I'm missing?
This is a pretty good game, but I wish it had a password feature.
It's a pain to have to go through all the levels each time.

300.11 | re .10 | ENMLD0::ROSS | | Thu Aug 03 1989 12:14 | 64 |
| Possible spoilers follow in regard to the jump, the water,
and the next level.
I'm getting better at the difficult jump that occurs in the
dam section. What I try to do is this: walk a turtle to the
opening and when only his back foot is on the ledge - jump.
He will bang his head on the ceiling but will usually make
it. There is another one of these in the section after the
water which I guess is Level 3 (the first is where you start,
the second is at the dam??). And up two ladders from that
is another one with less room overhead that looks harder (but
isn't).
I always have a difficult time with the water although I have
made it through several times. What I do is to switch to a
turtle who is at full strength before going thru the pink stuff.
After coming out of that section I go as far as I can and disarm
as many bombs as possible without switching to another turtle.
This is usually until I get to the next section of seaweed.
Try to have at least two turtles at full strength so you can
switch to them for areas with pink seaweed, I do this practically
them every time. The only other thing I did was to purposely
"waste" a turtle before time ran out and the bomb went off, I had
Raphael at full strength and Michaelangelo at about half still left,
and there was only one bomb to go so all I had to do was have the
the turtles swim to the last bomb. I was afraid that if the bomb went
off the game would be over. This happened once but I'm not sure
if this is the way the game works. If you do it right you can get
through in one pass, just switch turtles when you get low. You
can take some hits along the way from the rays (or what ever they
are) to save time. Just stay away from the seaweed that grabs you.
You seem to be right about how the continue feature works. No
combination of buttons I have tried seems to work. The only thing you
can do is "feed your hungry turtles" when ever possible which I
think is a key to the game. There are a couple of slices that
appear when ever you enter a sewer, you can go in and out as many
times as you want and bring all your turtles to full strength.
I did better last night in Level 3 (I guess that's what it was).
I was able to go into a sewer and get some Missiles to break up
a barricade. Unfortunately I screwed up. When you are in the
van you can fire the missiles (B button) or bullets (A button),
and I shot off all my missiles by mistake before breaking down enough
of the barricades, I thought I was firing off the bullets. I found
another sewer to go into but my son who was watching tripped over
the power cord in all the excitement and ended the game. I was
getting low on turtle lives anyway so I don't think I would have gotten
far in it.
BTW after you get through the water there is a neat little
episode in a sewer similar to what is in Ninja Gaiden,
this one has the "Shred Head" in it.
I am I getting addicted to this game?
No way, I can quit whenever I want.
Really, I can.
Really.

Dribble and Top Gun and ......)

I was reading the notes in this file yesterday and was inspired.
I went to Toys R' Us Last night (Thurs Aug 31) and bought TMNT and the
base system. Ooops, almost forgot to mention Framingham store. The
base system was $79.95 and TMNT was $44.95. I also bought Operation
Wolf, good game however I think I will have to buy a better controller
for this one. I am not to familiar with nintendo and cartridges. Did
I pay too much?
On to the subject, I really enjoy this game, the graphics are great
and the option to switch between turtles helps out alot. I'm still at
the beginning stages and am trying to figure out how to confront the
enemy. I tried killing everything on the screen. Is it better to
conserve energy and avoid some things and continue. I dont like the
the map. I think this was asked before... How many levels are there?
Does the map change when you get to a new level or does it represent
all the levels?
Happy EX-Atari 5200 owner

| RE .19
On completing level I - you have to beat both Bebop and Rocksteady.
You will know who they are because they have captured April, when you
see her you have found them. You have to defeat one in one section and
the other in another section. Some other enemies you have to defeat and
some you can avoid, the music changes for the "must destroy" enemies.
If you avoid some of other ones they will follow you, so you are better
getting rid of them.
The quickest way thru level I is to go into the right sewer entrances.
You have to figure out which sewer entrances to use and which ones
to skip. If you want I can let you know which ones they are, just
reply here or send me a mail message.
The maps - I haven't bothered with the maps since the first couple of days
they never helped me anyway so I ignore them. There is a new map for each
level.
# of levels - I think there are 5 levels but I'm not sure. I'm stuck in 3
but haven't played for 2 weeks because we moved recently and the Nintendo
was in a box somewhere. If I took it out nothing would have got done on the
new house.
RE .14 & .15
I took it out last night got to level 3, got my missles and ropes but
didn't complete the level. I spent alot of time driving around in the
van shooting out the barricades and I went into a few entrances but
didn't get far enough to finish level 3.
Do you have to destroy ALL the barricades and then go into a particular
entrance? Or can you destroy just enough to get to the right one? What
building (or sewer) do I go into to rescue Splinter? I also didn't use
the rope and would like to see it, so could you let me know where it's
used?

First of all, you don't have to destroy all the barricades, just
the ones in your path. Splinter is in a building, and to get there
just follow my instructions in .14 . Since the path to the building
is without intersections, you don't have to worry about taking the wrong
path. The rope is used after rescueing Splinter.
Hope this helps!

You can rescue a captured turtle (he's actually tied up!) in Level 3, you
just find him and bump into him and when you check the information
screen he's back with a full life line.I think they mean the turtles, April
and Splinter when they say rescue but a captured turtle can be released.
Re .23
possible spoilers below
This past weekend I was able to do the rope trick, but when I read your
latest reply Monday I was suprised to learn that Splinter is in this area.
I went in one opening worked my way to the roofs (rooves?) used the ropes
and worked my way down and left through the other opening, but NO SPLINTER.
I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. Maybe you could tell me where I
am going wrong. I hate to say it but I've been thru the "dreaded" dam section
so many times that's its starting to get easy.
I'll try to describe what I did using the directions relative to the
screen - that is rather than say turning left or right I'll say the direction
that the van is pointing or heading.
UP
all directions are : LEFT RIGHT
DOWN
is this how you find him?
First of course you get into the van and head UP and Left to the first
opening, you go in work you way up to the missles and exit out picking up
1 piazza and 1/4 piazza and a couple of weapons (stars I think). Then you
exit the same opening. Then get into the van and head LEFT and then
DOWN and RIGHT to the barricade. You blast it and continue RIGHT and
then DOWN, blast a barricade and LEFT where there is an opening. Go in,
get ropes, shield, etc.; get out through a different opening, head LEFT
and DOWN to bridge, blast barricade, cross bridge, head RIGHT to next
barricade (UP and RIGHT slightly). Keep going RIGHT to end then UP to
where there are two barricades which you blast. Then continue UP until
there is an alley or sidewalk too small for the van. Get out head UP the
sidewalk, then RIGHT to where there are two openings.
I went in the opening in the left and exited the one on the right,
but I didn't see Splinter or any new enemies (I was looking for
Meraturtle). Where did I go wrong?

| < how do you kill the big guy that spits fire at>
<you without that little thing flying out and hitting you?>
I'm certainly no expert but.....
I don't think you can destroy it before the thing flies out unless
you have the weapon that looks like a shield. You need to get through
the first tunnel and beat a few of these to get the missles to
get to the tunnel with the shield. In the first tunnel you have to
beat them without it.
The turtle with the Bo (Donatello?) works good with this guy,
stay far enough away so you don't get hit by the fire and
whack him a few times with the Bo. After you hit him enough he
will die but I think his head flies off and it will keep coming
at you until you destroy it. So the idea is to get the head
(if that's what it is) as soon as possible. If you hit the weapon
button immediately after the big guy is wiped out and before you
actually see the disconected head, you can get the head right
away so it won't get a chance to fly around. All you see is
the explosion when the Bo hits it. If you are far enough away
from the big guy (what's he called anyway?) you can do the same thing
with the stars. The things drove me nuts until I discovered this
trick by accident.

You don't select or use the rope as you would a weapon. It happens
automatically when you get to the right place. You have to
be on the roof of a particular building. When you will see something
that looks like a large capital A (that's the best way I can
describe it) you just touch it and the turtle swings the rope
to the next building by itself. The main thing is to go into the
right building, you can get up to the roof of at least one
other building but the rope only works in one place as far as
I know.

300.32 | Complete what is needed | ENMLD0::ROSS | | Thu Sep 14 1989 15:30 | 10 |
| No, you don't have to go through every sewer or building. I don't
think you missed anything in the first sewer. I think that some
sewers and buildings you have to go thru, some are worth the trouble
of going through (to get 1/2 or full pizzas or weapons), and some
are a waste of time. You may want to try every sewer or building
at least once to see whats in them and then figure out which
are worth the trouble of going thru and which ones you should skip.
I think the first one is one of the ones to be skipped since
all you get (as far as I can remember) is a slice and you don't
need it since your life forces are all "full" when you start off.

The weapon travels in a straight line and wipes out every thing
in its path. In reply .25 I referred to it as a "shield" in a

<kiai/scroll/shield> as well as the ropes and also where

way to get the rockets at the top ? I can't seem to

I'm stuck at the stage where I need to cross the small drop

300.39 | Help with Splinter | LEDDEV::BELANGER | | Sat Oct 28 1989 11:05 | 9 |
| I followed the directions to splinters location. When I enter
the building I go down into the sewers again. Here I have to jump
to cross the water but I never make it. How do I get across this
water section. There are only three buildings left so splinter
must be there somewhere.

300.40 | help for .39 | ENMLD0::ROSS | | Tue Oct 31 1989 10:26 | 31 |
| If you are in the right place and are ending up in the water
you might be doing the same thing I was. I'll stick what worked
for me behind a form-feed.
[spoiler follows]
The "jump" button is somewhat pressure sensitive - if you
hit it hard you jump real high and do a sommersault (sp?),
if you hit it lightly you can hop. So to jump from one
platform to another you have to move in the right direction
(which is right by the way) and at the end of the platform
push the jump button lightly to hop to the next platform.
The first couple of times I did the Splinter section I was
jumping way up in the air doing a sommersault and landing
in the water. Once I tried the hop I was O. K.
But what you might find next is......
[yet another spoiler]
you will get bumped off the platform by an enemy so
[spoiler strikes again]
be ready with a weapon, especially one that can strike down
since you can land on an enemy and get knocked off.

| I am having problems with a jump in what I think is level II. I can't
get any of the turtles to jump across a ledge without falling in the
water. Any spoilers would be appreciated.

300.43 | use the turbo button | LEDDEV::BELANGER | | Tue Dec 05 1989 09:43 | 6 |
| The jump button is touch sensitive. Use a quick tap to jump lower
- hold it down to jump higher. I tend to use the turbo button in
the trickier areas especially where there is something over head.

can play at a time.

300.46 | Where's Shreader | HOTAIR::ENGQUIST | | Wed May 16 1990 19:25 | 3 |
| Well I am getting to my wits end. My kids and I have beaten the
technodrome and are now stuck. We keep getting killed by the spacemen
with ray guns. Also where is shreader?

300.47 | "Where's Shredder ???!!!" | VERSA::TULANKO | | Thu May 17 1990 09:46 | 26 |
|
I second that motion. We got a NES after Christmas
this year, have been playing TMNT off and on since, and also
get as far as level six inside the Technedrome, and also wind
up getting wiped out by those hovering ray gun men. I did notice
that it makes a difference with who you enter the Drome with.
Certain men (I believe Leonardo is one) will enter without the space
men appearing right away. But there are a lot of spots in this game
like that.
Anyhow, the "Floaters" fire in 45 degree incremented
angles. Do you have to position yourself to not get hit ?? I have
gone as far as the "Yellow" section in level six which is just a
straight run with low cielings and these guys along with others
are in here like flies !!! The bad part is it takes 4 hits with
a "Scroll" (or kiea??) to kill them or 8 hits with Donatello's Bo
and he's the best long range fighter !!!
So how close are we and how many levels are there???
I thought I read in the book about either 6 or 8 levels. Is the
"Yellow" section the last to go through before you get to Shredder?
Also I heard that one must go through the right rooms in the area
right before Shredder otherwise the rooms just loop back around
to where you started. Any truth to this ???

awaiting a reply. Any taker's ?????

| My teenage son has been playing this game for the past week and I
always sit in and watch him play. I noticed that everytime that he
gets the boomerangs, or the three stars, or whatever, he may switch
to another turtle with more of a life line. When he switches back,
however, he can no longer use his boomerangs or stars as weapons. Is
this the way it is supposed to work?

300.50 | Possible help... | CHET::BEAUCHESNE | | Thu Jun 07 1990 12:51 | 8 |
| RE .49
I believe that you can use the boomerangs, etc. by hitting the
SELECT button once you've gone back to the character who has
them. If you've just picked up the boomerangs, etc. you can
also hit the SELECT button to _not_ use them.

300.51 | BAD Cartridge ?? | MACNAS::JIMGLYNN | Child of the Universe | Tue Jul 03 1990 15:32 | 10 |
|
My ten year has a problem with this game, when he get to Shredder
he uses Don to knock off all his power -but then Shredder jumps
in front of Don and tries to `scratch' Don. He continues to do this
and the only way out is to RESET and start over.
Is this a faulty cartridge or is there a way around this problem?

300.52 | Boomerang spoiler | EVETPU::REINIG | This too shall change | Wed Aug 29 1990 19:01 | 12 |
| I discovered a neat little trick the other night.
August G. Reinig
spoiler
If one turtle has boomerangs and you would like another to have them,
you can transfer them. Through them, then, before they return, select
another turtle. The new turtle will catch the boomerangs and keep
them.

Both games have very good graphics, TII is a little better,
TI is very very difficult. TII is real easy with the extra life
tip. TII you can play 1 to 4 players which is nice. TI was the
hardest game I've played, my son and I could never beat it, we
made it just about to the end too.
