297.1 | It's a hit! | LANDO::ANJOORIAN | | Tue Aug 01 1989 18:37 | 31 |
|
I just received this one from Trysoft. I called them to order Ultima,
but the lady talked me into buying this one (it had just arrived that
day) since they were out of Ultima. She seemed pretty enthusiastic
about it, so I figured why not?
It's really good!
If you liked Zelda II, you'll like this one. It's very similar in
spirit. There is an extensive overland area with plains, mountains,
swamps, forests, caves, bridges, towns, and castles. You can be
attacked by monsters of varying viciousness in the overland. Your
success in defeating the monsters depends on your experience level
and the various tools, weapons, and magic spells you have at your
disposal. Tools and weapons can be bought in the towns with gold
coins you accumulate along the way as you defeat monsters.
The game has a much broader array of weapons, tools, and magic spells
than in Zelda II, and the game makes extensive use of windows to keep
you informed of all your various status parameters. You have to talk
to a lot more people in this game than in Zelda II (it helps to write
these verbal clues down). The object of the game is to find and defeat
the evil Dragonlord who has stolen the kingdom's balls of light.
I've only played with it for about an hour, and I have a feeling it is
going to be a long time before I get anywhere near the Dragonlord.
I predict this game will be Nintendo's next big blockbuster!

| I just beat this game over the past weekend. It's a good one. Lots
of text to read as you encounter various characters and you really need
to write it all down. Here's a hint on that little old man in the cave
south of Rimuldar (possible mini-spoiler after <FF>):
When you have the right items, the man will give you a tool that will
allow you to create a rainbow (bridge). One of the items you need is
the stone(s) of fire, which according to one character are hidden in
Tantegel Castle. Ask around some of the characters for clues on the
other item(s) you'll need. Hint: remember the Legend.

there's a feature that allows you to transfer your "adventure log" to
another player, so that person can play at your level of experience
while leaving your original game unaffected.

297.10 | | BEING::POSTPISCHIL | Always mount a scratch monkey. | Wed Aug 16 1989 12:15 | 47 |
| I got Dragon Warrior last week. I recommend ordering from Trysoft; two
copies were $43 each and shipping by Federal Express was $5.
The game is like Ultima in its commands and in the view of towns and
countryside. Fighting also uses the Ultima system of hit points, but
there's only you and the monster, not the multiple characters in your
party fighting multiple monsters as in Ultima. When you run into a
monster, a picture of it appears, and you also get a window for
messages about the battle.
Commands normally are Talk, Status, Stairs, Search, Spell, Item, Door,
and Take. Commands in battle are Fight, Run, Spell, and Item.
In spite of the similar interface, Dragon Warrior is different from
Ultima. The countryside is better set for you to explore rather than
just wander around. In Ultima, you could get just about anywhere once
you passed a certain point. After that, Ultima became mostly a matter
of repetitive battles to earn cash and repetitive searching to get each
of the objects. Dragon Warrior is better designed; it is hard to
travel far into areas you are not yet ready for.
Dragon Warrior is also better done in some subtle ways. For example,
if you make the wrong menu choice in Ultima and cancel it with Button
B, you lose your turn. Then the enemy gets to hit you. Dragon Warrior
does the right thing; it prompts you again for the command.
The caves in Dragon Warrior are different from Ultima. They are not
the 8 by 8 by 8 maze shown from the first-person view. They are
similar to the third-person view from above used for towns and
countryside, but you cannot see very far. In fact, you can see only
the square you are on until you use a torch to light up the eight
squares adjacent to you. Since the caves are not limited to a cube
shape (and in fact need not have only one entrance/exit), I think they
are more interesting to explore.
I am also hoping there will be interesting objects and tasks along the
way. So far, it seems more interesting than Ultima. You do need to
accumulate battle experience as in Ultima, but it is not as tedious as
in Ultima. You need fewer points at first, but you need an increasing
number of points for each level advance. You can get more points more
quickly by going into more difficult territory, so the game pushes you
along. Each level advance increases strength, speed, maximum hit
points, and maximum magic points, so you don't need to worry separately
about increasing each of those, as you do in Ultima.

them below.....
1. What does the Faerie Flute do ?
2. I have found the harp and exchanged it for the Staff of Rain, any
help as to what it does ?
3. In Garinham, someone said Erdrick's armor was hidden.... Is it in
the same place as the harp was ?
4. How powerful do you have to be in order to make it to the destroyed
town south of Garinham ? I'm at level 14 now with 70 HP, broad
sword, Magic Armor, and Large shield...As soon as I cross the bridge
before it I get beaten to a pulp by one monster. And I can almost

297.16 | two versions of the game | LANDO::ANJOORIAN | | Mon Aug 21 1989 13:26 | 22 |
| Re: 14
According to one of the order-takers at Trysoft, there are 30 levels of
play. But here's the kicker: he said that there were actually TWO
versions of the game. One that was relatively easy and that could be
beaten at level 20-21 or so and one that was considerably more
difficult and that required you to reach higher levels. He said that
the difficulty of the game you play is determined by the NAME you select
as your password at the beginning of the game. I asked him what name I
should use to get the more difficult version since I had beaten the
game at about level 21 and he didn't know (this was about a week or so
ago).
So...does anyone know what name to use for the more difficult version
of the game? I already tried some of the more obvious ones (Erdrick,
Dragon, Warrior, etc.) without luck. The Nintendo hot line doesn't
know either.

Keep searching - there are places to find things ...
As far as I know, all things that can be found have hints as to
their location.
re: .15
There are several hints for the Flute - remember them, and when
the time comes you should recognize where to use it.
The Staff of Rain is used in conjunction with something else in
order to obtain an item used to fulfill the Legend.
Erdrick's armor was hard to find - collect all of the clues, then
THINK, search, think some more, and eventually you should reason it
out.
Before going to the destroyed town, I'd suggest at least attaining
the Healmore spell (at level 17). Also, once you complete Caitlin
and get all items there, you should be strong enough.

| My daughter just began playing this game and is confused about using
something she found in a chest in a cave near the starting castle.
(specific question behind FF)
She finds a tablet from Erdrick that says it will verify the identity
of his descendent (you?), and that 3 men who have essential information
must be found. In the first town there is a man who asks for proof
that you are a descendent of Erdrick, but there is nothing to show him
even after finding the tablet. Is there a connection? Can the tablet
be used? In Zelda II the characters who asked for things automatically
recognized when you had discovered or obtained the necessary item. Is
that the case here, or is there more to it? The TAKE command is used
to open a chest. Doesn't that also take the item?
Answers and guidance will, of course, be appreciated.

This is somewhat related to an earlier question...In several of the
towns one of the townsfolk asks you if you have any proof that you
are a descendant of Erdrick. I believe I have found the proof yet
these people always ask the same question, to which there is no way
to reply. Why do they ask ?
Also, in the town of Kol, there is an old man behind a counter who
says you are brave, but "you cannot defeat the great dragonlord with
such weapons..thou shouldst come here again". What does this guy want
me to find in order to satisy him ? I have, I think, just about
everything, with the exception of Erdrick's sword. Townsfolk have
mentioned the sword, but how/where to get it. Would it be in the
DragonLord's Castle by any chance ? I have been there once, but I had

trying to encourage you to find Erdrick's badge (or whatever).
However, even if you find it they still ask the question. Ignore it.
Spoiler concerning the location of the sword.
Yes, the sword is in the Dragonlord's Castle. The interesting
thing is that if you get the sword and go back to talk to the person
telling you how useless the weapons you have now are, he only
congratulates you.
If you have have everything else, then it is time for you to either
go back to the Dragonlord's Castle or make a few levels first.

My question is probably not a spoiler, but I will hide it anyway.
At first when I went into this cave the old man told me I had failed
in my task and I was sent out of the cave. After this I went and
found Erdrick's Token and went back to the old man. This time he
said, "When the sun and rain meet a rainbow bridge shall appear.
Thou may go and search." Well, I was under the impression that
this guy was going to give me something, but he didn't. What exactly
does this guy do for me? Maybe I do not have the proper items;
these are the items I do have: the stones of sunlight, the fighter's
ring, Erdrick's token, dragon's scale, the flute, the silver harp,
Gwaelin's love, and one magic key. I am at level 20 and I have
Erdrick's armor, the flame sword, and the silver sheild. Do I need
more than this, or am I just completely misinterpreting what the

Is this something I must 'search' for like the flute, something

there is no way to get to it. (In the SW corner of the town of

Dragon Warrior is similar to Link in how the overworld appears.
That is where the similarity ends. DW doesn't require incredible
dexterity with the controller as you battle the enemy and traverse
the countryside, caves and castles like Link does. It is a more
text oriented game with the emphasis on strategy. For that reason,
I enjoyed playing DW much more than Link.
Graphics are good but not great. You get a still picture of the
monster as you go through battle, so if you are looking for clever
movement on the screen, you will be disappointed.
They could have made the game a little more difficult, but it
still was a challenge. Certainly not at the level of Zelda, but
about the same difficulty as Link.
Overall I would rate the game a 8.5 out of 10. Zelda, Metroid
would rate 10's, Link would rate an 8.

| I need some more specific help Sir Scott or anyone else on locating the
badge of courage. I'm at level 17. I have the following:
Erdricks Armor
Flaming Sword
Large Shield
Stones of Sunlight
Staff of Rain
Gwaelins Love
The Fighters Ring
The Flute
And the other basic things. I've been to the dead town. I've been to
the Town of Catlin. A man there said: "To learn how proof may be may be
obtained that thy ancestor was the great Erdrick, see a man in this
very town." All I was able to find there besides the weapons was the
info on how to obtain Erdricks Armor. I also spoke to the person who
said: "Let us wish the warrior well. May the light be thy strength.
Thou may go and search. From Tantegal castle travel 70 leagues to the
south and 40 to the east."
Did I miss someone?
I went back to the man in the cave who said I had failed after getting
Erdricks Armor but he still said I failed. I'm confused. I went to the
spot where the rainbow bridge should happen thinking the "May the light
be thy strength..etc. were the okay I needed but when I got there and
selected the stones and the staff still nothing happened. More
confusion.
Do I need to get this badge of courage and then go back to the cave
where the guy told me I failed and he will do something to allow the
stones of sunlight and the staff of rain to combine so that the rainbow
bridge can be made?
Thats all I can think of that needs to be done. Am I on target or way
off base. BTW, Sir Scott, all the Princess says is how many points are
needed to get to the next level and how much distance is needed to
travel from where I might currently be back to the Tantegal castle.
I'm frustrated, lost and will take any and all help...specific spoilers
included.

since then. I know the key maker is in Ramulder but I think I need many
time my present power to get to him. How can I get that level of power?

| Re: -1
Spoiler on keys.
There are only three places I know of to get keys. The first town of
Brecconary, to the right of Tantegal castle. The Town of Rimuldar and
the Town of Catlin. Unfortunately to get to the key makers you need a
key to unlock a door barricading them from you. If you want more read
on. Another possible SPOILER on keys.
I have not found any keys in chests. Once you get to the key makers you
can get up to 6 keys to carry at any one time. It is wise to always
keep at least one key to get back to the key makers to buy more keys.
Keys vary in price. Somewhere between 50 - 100 gold apiece.
It is wise to not try to rush things and go for an area or town when
you don't have the hit points and magic points to help. You will almost
always surely die. The bad thing about dying is that you lose half your
gold. And always go back to the king when you get a new level and get
it registered in case you want to quit for awhile or accidently get
killed because you can start again with your current level and hit
points, otherwise it will start you at the level you last checked in
with.
Get to a place south of Garinham that is just north of the big open
plain where the Dead Town of Haukness is. Keep walking up and down the
rows of trees and mountains and finding the bad guys. Fight them for
experience points and gold. You'll build up a lot more quickly. Test
yourself to find out which ones you can beat and which ones are too
strong, that way you know when to run and when to fight. At each level
increase you'll get stronger and can fight enemies that give you more
experience and gold points. Look for the GOLDMAN. He's easy to beat and
gives you a lot of gold.
Good Luck. Have patience. Keep working at it. It takes time to gain
experience and advance.

Dave,

If I recall, you are right about the stones being in the castle.
You will need at least one key in order to get them. Up in the top
right hand corner of the castle, you can only get there with a key,
you will find another key vendor. The technique to use here is the
same as the one used to find the key vendor in Rimuldar, you must
walk along the outside right edge of the castle. Be careful not to
stray far from the castle wall or you will be placed into the
outer world. You will then find the castle cellar and the 'Stones'.
Good Luck !

Hell Warriors,
I was wondering if someone can give me a good detailed
discription of this game Dragon Warrior.
There are some things I don't understand about it.
I rented it to see what all the hoopla was about
and I was wondering if this is a game where you can do
combat face to face with creatures/monsters.
The reason I ask is that after I went through the 1st
screen/maze I went to a little yellowish brown area
and for the heck of it went in to the sub menu and started
to use its features such as "take" (couldn't take anything)
"talk" no one to talk to and then I used "attack"
all of a sudden a picture of a little round creature
appeard and we began to do battle, but this wasn't the
kind of battle I was used to doing (like Zelda,Metriod,)
where your characture was face to face blow for blow
in physical combat instead it was a verbal fight
with the screen saying "you hit him" he hits you"
creature defeated. Is this how all the fighting is
done in this game???? I stop playing it because I
figured all the fun of actual face to face combat
was taken out of this game.
If this is the case why such a big fuss over a game
in which you can't fight your own battles.
Is this the way you have to defeat the Dragonlord at the end???
I hope there is more to this battling than a 3rd party
doing the fighting. From what I read in here the game sounds
good and I would like to play it some more but only if I can
do the actual combating.
Also is this the way computer games on IBM,APPLE etc,do it?
Thanks in advance
Wayne.

| Wayne,
I would suggest you get the instruction booklet and read a little bit
about the game. I thought the same as you do regarding the fights.
I bought the game last week and thought it was going to be the same as
Zelda with face to face battles. It is not the same but there is a lot
of strategy involved. At first I thought "what a rip-off!" but now I
am having a great time and would recommend getting the game and seeing
what all the fuss is about. The further into the game you get the more
fun it gets. Thou shalt be happy with it!!!

finally got to the Dragon Lord I had 102 magic. Before I talked

to hit-hit-healmore. When I finally beat him I had 30 HP and only 2
MP. But at least it's possible at level 20.

There are other things that are fun besides video-game-fighting. One
example is adventuring -- it's fun to be given clues, search for
things, and figure out when to use them. Another thing that's fun for
some people is problem solving -- here's a screen with a number of
obstacles, tools, passages, and so on, now figure out how to accomplish
the goal. Another possibility is "maze"-running -- action games don't
have to be just fighting and dodging; they can involve making
decisions, choosing ladders/platforms, digging holes as traps, guiding
monsters into traps, etc.
Personally, I used to find action-reflex games interesting, but now
most are boring -- partly because I've played all different kinds, and
partly because publishers are showing less creativity these days. It
is just not interesting to fire a hundred shots at yet another monster
-- it's the same as the last game of that type, with different colors.
> Also is this the way computer games on IBM,APPLE etc,do it?
Some do, some do not. Computer games have a lot more variety than
video games. That's not necessarily good; a lot of them vary in the
direction of poor quality. But there are some very interesting
computer games you will never see for the Nintendo.

We have two games going. The interesting thing is they are
at the same level (17) but the Maximum Hit Points are
different. One is at 100 and the other is at 91. They both
have Endrick's Armor, Flame Sword, and Silver Shield. They
both have the same items. The Maximum Magic is the same
(91).
What gives. Anybody know what could be the difference to
cause the Maximum HP to be different?

It seems to me that the various skill points you recieve when you go up
a level are random. Sometimes you get a lot, sometimes just a few. So
maybe the difference between the two characters is just the accumulated
difference.

Yes it does look like it is random. But do you always get
the same number of points going from one level to the next
and they are assigned randomly to the different catagories,
or is the actual number obtained a random amount. How is it
determined how much each catagory will get.

Hello,
I'm looking for a specific spoiler to a question
concerning Erdrick's(sp) sword. The question which, is a spoiler,
follows the formfeed:
I know that the sword is located in the dragonlord's castle,
and I've discovered the secret entrance behind the throne. This leaves
three possible entrances down into the dungeon, the secret one and two
that can be reached by passing through doors. I've been down there and
believe I've seen the chest containing the sword (in a small walled off
room located in the middle of one particular dungeon level). I'm looking
for a fairly specific spoiler on the route to use to reach the above
mentioned chest.

Been working on the wicked bad guy at the entrance to Caitlan (sp??).
I am at the level of 14 with 78 HP?? and 70 MP??

I believe - am not really sure if this is what I got.
I need help in the following - spoilers either here or by mail would

I am putting these questions much lower because some can also be
spoilers.
1. How do I get that sucker near Caitlan - do I have to be at the
next level or two??
2. Do I need something to give to the guy in the cave near Rimuldar
(again sp?) and do I get that in that town?? (BTW - I did rescue
Gwaelin and have her love!!! YEAH!!!)
3. In the dead town, do I have to kill the axe knight over in the
little patch area on the right side of the town to then do a search
to get something or what?? I have been able to kill the dragon
but that axe guy is something else!!!!
I know these are alot to ask but I am really going nuts with these
areas. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated - thanks again.

The Golem at Caitlin can be handled in two ways:
1) Mash him like any other monster. You may not be strong enough yet.
(This is how I originally did it.)
2) Use a particular item. Music soothes the savage beast - but you have
to get just the right kind.
The guy in the cave needs three things. You mentioned one of them.
Use Gwailin's Love to get another - get clues for this in Caitlin.
The axe knight is a tough dude. (And you ain't seen *nothing* yet.)
But killing him will be worth your effort.

Hang in there for awhile. Just keep fighting the guys in the
surrounding area to build up your strength. The town next to the
kings castle has herbs in it. Go over there and buy some.
When you increase your levels then you can wander out a little further
than what you could before that level because you are stronger and
can take more hits from the bad guys and the amount of points you
loose are less from them.
Good luck!!!!!!!

297.128 | Edricks Token | CSC32::L_GANGI | | Sat Jan 20 1990 15:50 | 55 |
| Hi fellow Warriors,
I have a few things to say about this game. First of all I went all
the way to level 30 which is the highest level. It took 65,535 EP to
get it but it was worth it, I made it to the Dragonlord and beat him to
a pulp in 5 shots not having to use healmore. I had a max HP of 210 and
a max MP of 189 using the name Damon. In the Nintendo Power tip book on
this game, they have a game with Nester who is on level 30 also,
however, he only has a max HP of 190 and a max MP of around 198. I also
decided to see how much gold you can get. The most you can get is
65,535 (the same as exp). There are two things I would like to know
though, 1. A clue on the cursed necklace(location) 2. Is there any
way to get the chests behind merchant counters?
Spoiler on the location of Edrick's Token follows:
Down south by Cantlin there is a gigantic swamp, by using Gwaelins love
you will be able to find 70 leagues south and forty west (in the
swamp). At that location search, you will discover Edricks Token.
Damon, the Dragonmaster.

| Just a quick note to put in my two cents on Dragon Warrior. This
is a great game, very much in the spirit of Link, Faxanadu, and
Zelda, yet different. It is the type of game that requires no manual
dexterity or physical capability. The challange of this game is
mental, both problem solving and strategic planning. Other games
mentioned required me to read the spoilers, knowing that the clues
given were insufficient to solve the puzzle. Not so with DW.
So put in another vote for a great game, I rate it a solid 9.5.

re: -1
You are suggesting that I missed something where I found the harp?
Spoiler for directions for the swap.
Northeast of the mountain range above the castle you first start from
find a bridge that heads to the east and cross it.
Go to the southeast corner of this land mass and cross another bridge
going to the east.
Staying to the western border of this landmass head north until you
find some mountains and trees, you should be able to go west following
the trees. The cave is north of the penninsula and is a one roomer.

I too put on the cursed belt and found myself in a dilemma, however
I am now in a position to give you guideance.
Possible Spoiler:
In the town just east of the starting castle, there is a man in
a room that says "If thou art ever cursed, come back and see me."
His house is on the eastern side of the village just north of the
main drag.
No I was not trying to say that you missed something in the cellar
where you found the harp, I thought that you had not yet found the
Princess and returned her to the castle. This is how you receive
her love. If this is the case the following could be a spoiler and
the reason for my confusion.
There is (of course ) a cave that you must traverse to go from north
to south (to Rimular) on the east coast. The easy path straight
down the left side of the cave, brings you happily out on the southern
landmass. The traveler weaving along the right side of the cave,
meets up with a very disagreable monster named the green dragon.
His punch is most heavy and when he breaths fire, one must have
a great deal of strength to survive. He is beatable at level 14-15
with some fancy spells and a few doses of herb.
What our green friend is guarding is the door to the room that hold
the princess captive. The scenes upon saving the princess and returning
her to her rightfull place on the throne next to her father are
among the best I have seen in videogame land.
My confusion was due to the fact that I can't believe there exist
a cave in the northeast that I did not find. I can't wait to go
home tonight and find it. I had thought that I had walked that area
so extensively, that there was nothing else left to find. THANKS
FOR THE LEAD. YOU HAVE MADE MY QUEST COME ALIVE.

You would probably be better off finding Calin first, the answers to
the first two questions can be found there. Also, you may need the
flame sword to wipe the Axe Knight.
If you're still impatient (I'm glad I wasn't,) I'll answer the three
questions in reverse order, with form-feeds
Find your way down around the douth west side of the island the dead
town is on and follow the coast until you've crossed two bridges.
YOu'll see it from there.
Axe knight spoier follows:
Fight him the same way as a dragon: sleep spell and then hack away. I
was at level 16 with the flame sword to do it. Be sure to RUN if he's
doesn't get to sleep in one or two tries.
Erdrick's Armour spoiler follows:
Ask around in Catlin, you'll have two or three people give you all the
clues...
You still want more specifics?
Naw, I can't tell you yet... Go to Catlin first and get the sword -
you'll need it. You find out there EXACTLY where the armour is.

Ultima is another psuedo-role-playing game that requires no manual
dexterity. I've only had Ultima for a week but I'd say it not as
good a game as Dragon Warrior. It is a little frustrating so far,
unlike DW was. DW is nicely balanced in its difficullty, just hard
enough to keep your interest without being (too) frustrating.
I'd give Dragon Warrior a 9 and Ultima a 6 (so far).

| re 297.16, password to second level
There is a second and harder level of play. After conquering
the game I came across this topic in this conference. So I went
back and tried to figure out what the word was.
I started with the more (oops ;-) )
obvious words and worked my way down the line. The word that I found
was Tantegal, if entered properly it will take up all of the allotted
spaces. The only difference I have seen between the two quests is
that instead of starting out with 15 hitpoints you start out with

Location of erdrick's armour
If I remember correctly, it is being guarded by a VERY strong foe. Of
course, once you kill the foe, you have to do a little looking.
There are two merchants in catlin that will give the two clues that
give you nearly the exact location

297.148 | Finding the Dragonlord | RTPSWS::VANDEUSEN | Monte VanDeusen, SWS - Wilmington, NC | Mon Feb 26 1990 07:49 | 8 |
| Numerous people from the different towns gove hints where to find the
Dragonlord. Usually, a player knows where to go long before he is
equiped. I suspect your son still needs at least one more magic item.
If he still doesn't know where to find him, have him revisit all the towns
(with a pencil and paper) and talk to everyone. If that seems like too
much work to him, beware: the dragonlord is one serious dude!

| This is a great game (like ZELDA I the best thou).... I am now looking for
Erick's SWORD.... I am at level 21 with everything (I think) but the
SWORD.. I keep going down and around and can see the chest in the
Dragonlord's castle but can't seem to get to it.... I have mapped to an
extent but I can't find that middle stairway "down" to the chest... but it
is fun.
Never found the CURSED NECKLACE but did fine the "BELT" since the book said
to get rid of it if possible, I sold it to one of the merchants... never
did see the man in the 1st town so don't know what he would have done, if
anything.... did anyone ever find that NECKLACE or is it somewhere in the
Dragonlord's Castle and I'll probably find that before I find the SWORD....
Anyway, this is fun and it helps pass the time away when there is nothing
good on TV....
If anyone out there has directions - leads - to the SWORD, greatly
appreciated but I'll keep on defeating (if they don't get me first) the
"enemies".....

| Linda,
Some people have gotten the sword (and the dragonlord) without mapping
the dungeon, but I didn't. I assumed (rightly) it would take more than
one attempt (for me) to kill the dragonlord, so I wanted to be able to go
back down as many times as necessary.
Possible spoiler to help mapping follows:
Do not assume that a down staircase always goes down one level (or vice
versa). Map each level and pay special attention to where stairs come
and go. It's not a simple maze. But it IS fun. I hope one of the
sequels makes it here soon!

and I just wanted to thank all the kind people who kept me from
going *nuts* with their timely spoilers. Since my wife has absolutely
no patients for Nintendo, I just had to tell someone of my success.
Actually, the victory was quite dramatic as I accidently stumbled
on the Dragon Lord's lair while wandering around lost in the castle.
After a brief battle I had run out of magic and, after absorbing
a vicious swipe from those steel-like claws, the screen turned a
dark blood red. Knowing that I was about to bit the dust, I concidered
trying to run but decieded to take one last defiant stab instead.
Guess what, that last shot finished him off. So thanks again for
all the help, and now it's on to Link.

| Even though I don't care to have the computer fight my battles, this
game is still fun and addicting. I plan to play it for an hour and
end up finally tearing myself away 3 hours later. Time just flys by.
I'm up to stage 15 right now. Last night I was trying to build up
enough gold to buy the magical armor (7700). I was around the
5000 mark and running low on HP and MP so decided to head into
the Inn at Rimuldar. I only needed 100 points to reach level
15, had 12 MP and 40 HP. At this point I said "Yea, I can do it,
these monsters are easy now". ....and then it happened. I only
needed 15 more Experience points and the Warlock got me. I had
no MP, so I couldn't use STOPSPELL. Tried to run away but he
blocked me and then put me to sleep. Within about 5 seconds, he
killed me. There went half of my gold. There is still a lot of
thought that you must put into this game.

297.170 | Hints needed at level 15/16 | CYCLPS::CHALMERS | Ski or die... | Wed Jan 09 1991 13:36 | 41 |
| I recently received this game as part of Nintendo Power's promotional
offer, and already I'm addicted. My wife, however, prefers the
Zelda-type battles rather than the windows in DW, but I found it very
easy to get used to.
I could use some hints (not spoilers, please)...
I'm currently at level 15 (about 500 experience points shy of 16), and
have the following items/weapons/spells:
Elrich's (sp?) armor Herbs(6)
Flame Sword Keys(5)
Silver Shield Gwailin's (sp) Love
Rainbow Drop
All spells except Elrich's Token
Healmore & Hurtmore Fairy Flute
Fighter's Ring
Dragon Scale
Torches (3)
Fairy Water
I've been to every town and cave, with the exception of the
Dragonlord's Island, and have beaten up on just about anything that
crosses my path, but what do I do now?
From reading the previous replies, it seems pretty futile to go
after the Dragonlord without Healmore/Hurtmore, and at anything
below Level 20 or 21. (Or is it?) Should I keep roaming the southern
areas of the outerworld, killing stuff until my EP will bring me to
level 20/21? Should I explore the Dragonlord's castle at my current
level, hoping to build up EP? Are there other items or places I
should check out first? Since I've already purchased the flame sword
and silver shield, and since I've already found Elrich's armor, are
their any other major purchaces I can make? (I'm accumulating a ton
of gold, but except for herbs, torches and rooms at the Inns, I
don't see any further use for my gold...)
Again, great game, and hints will be appreciated.

My brother is currently playing this game also (I finished it about a
year ago and am trying to assist him from memory), I would suggest
you look around the Dragonlord's castle (there's something you will
need to find in there) to build up your experience points at a quicker
rate. However, be prepared to use either WINGS or RETURN spell if
you find yourself getting low. There really isn't anything else to
spend all that gold on anymore.
Hope this helps. If you need anymore assistance I'll try to help.

297.172 | The hunt for the Dragonlord... | CYCLPS::CHALMERS | Ski or die... | Tue Jan 15 1991 09:53 | 20 |
| Nance, thanks for the response.
I had gotten bored roaming the southern lands, just killing stuff to
earn Experience Points, so I boogied on over to the Dragonlord's
Castle. I found Elrich's (sp) sword, and built my level up to 18. So
far, so good...but then I went looking for the Dragonlord himself. I
fought my way down to a hallway, approx 1 square wide and 10 squares
long with a staircase at either end. I entered from the left and tried
exiting from the right, but seemed to be caught in a loop, going thru
the same screen over and over again. I decided to exit, stage left, and
fight my way back out, since I had let my magic get too low to use
'Outside' or 'Return'...:^( I got my butt kicked on the very next screen.
(Next time, I'll take your advice and carry some wings to get me out in
a hurry.)
A question, though...I've already got the best armor & the best sword,
but is there a better shield than the silver shield? If so, is it one
that can be bought, or is it something that needs to be found?
Freddie

| Freddie,
The Silver Shield is the best there is to offer.
The Wings will only work outside the caves or castles. They bring you
back to Tantegel Castle. You need to save enough magic to use your
spell of OUTSIDE (6 mps). You cannot use this spell while in the
midst of a battle.
My brother is planning on "DOING IN" the Dragonlord tonight. I'll
map it out for you if I can.
Hope this helps

| re .172
Freddie, I finally managed to defeat the dragonlord on Tuesday night.
One thing I found interesting is that the monsters in the castle varied
in power and difficulting in different trips in. This was not related
to my level. There were times when I would go in and kick butt real bad.
I also could run away rather easily. The other times (most of them), I
would have major troubles, there would be more monsters (allowing me
less time to heal) and many were hard to run away. These times caused
me to use up MP.
Anyhow the level you were on that had the narrow corridor with stairs
at both ends was level 6. West of the (down) stairs you used in level
5 there is another stair that goes down to level 6. This one opens up
into a wider room (about 5-6 steps wide) with stairs at both end. When
you take the down stairs in this section of 6, you will arrive at the
lighted level 7 where the Dragonlord (and some chests!) resides.
Hope this helps.

1. How can I get to a higher level quickly?
2. What is the highest number of EP to the next level have
you all seen?
3. Is there an order of where to go and what to get? If there
is, could someone give me a spoiler as to the order.
4. Where can I get the Flame Sword? or E's sword?

skills, quickly built my level up from 20 to 24, and managed to finally
(and just barely: HP down to 25, MP down to 3) defeat the Dark Lord.
I then went back to the king, and was hailed as a great hero, etc,.etc.
After the credits rolled thru and the game ended, however, I noticed
that my adventure was still listed as saved and available, beginning at
level 24, at the point I started out on my final (and victorious) mission.
Is this correct? I had thought that once successfully completed, the
adventure would be deleted...I realize I can delete it myself, but I'm
just curious if this is a feature or a bug. (Or is there a second
adventure available, like with legend of Zelda?) Inquiring minds want
to know...
On to DW-II...I hope it's as much fun!

| Since the game does not SAVE when you beat it, your adventure log will
include the adventure which you just beat. If you select this
character, you will start from the same point you were at the last time
you SAVED. The same thing happens in Final Fantasy.
