| I had it but sold it. I started playing and quickly found myself in a
LOT of different rooms. It wasn't clear what the immediate goals were,
which way I should go, or what. I didn't feel like exploring and
mapping without a more structured game than that, so I sold it. Of
course, I'm jaded because I've got some great games to play (on the
Commodore and Sega systems, plus I've got Ultima waiting for me on
Nintendo), so I may have passed up a fairly decent game.
I would say don't buy it at the full price until somebody else enters a
more detailed review than I can give it.

| I enjoyed ULTIMA (defeatd EXODUS) but can't get into this game.
My son seems to enjoy this one better after he gave up on ULTIMA.
I find LEGACY more unstructured than ULTIMA. ULTIMA was far easier

Maybe I'm just exhausted from ULTIMA and will pursue the crowns
once my son gives me a chance.
I'll pass on any hints he/we find.

| Really need help from the beginning of this one. I rented the tape
from a nearby video store. When I start the game, I choose a
character. After that I am suppose to be able to choose items to
use within the game. The instructions say to go to the item and
press the A button and the item will be placed into your inventory.
When I do this, nothing happens!!! Am I doing something wrong???
Also, at the end of the first level, there are two chests above
me, how can I get to them??? I've tried going back and walking
along upper levels of the stones, but can only get so far!!! Any
help would be greatly appreciated (spoilers too!!!!)
I am really getting aggrivated but want to play this game. I found
a glove in a chest on the next level down, but when I go to try
and retrive it in inventory, I can't do anything. I only have it
for this evening and then have to return it tomorrow. If I can
finally start getting somewhere, I may purchase this one.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

| I'll try to explain a little better....it's been awhile
When you first enter the dungeon go all the way to the bottom where
the inn is. From there go right till you come to the next section.
In the begining of this section there is one of those king looking
creatures (don't remember what they're called) walking under some
blocks. Right above you is a chest and lion guard this is the spot
you need to get to for the first crown. Getting there is a little
rough but since you have the wings (you know who to use for that)
it shouldn't be to hard. When I get home tonite I'll check and
make a quick map to all the crowns in case you need any more spoilers.
One at a time right? :^)

| RE .25 & -.1
I found the trick for jumping over to the other side of the
column. I found this technique by mistake really, I was using Pochi
just exploring where he could go, and was standing on one of the
stalagmites. You know, of course, if you stand on one of these using
the up arrow, that you will not be hurt. Well I needed to go up to
another screen and when I did;
Spoiler follows
I landed on a block which disappeared
as the green ones do where the crown is. I immediately jumped and
found that I could jump when holding the up arrow when doing so on a
block which disappears. If you want to continue moving you need to
press the controller up and left or right which ever way you need to
go.

spoiler follows:
I too have just gotten the "daughters crown" here is how I did it.
If you get to the point where you drop down to the lion and inn and find that
you need to get to the other side of the column, then you went too far.
I used the pick to destroy all the blocks in the same row. I left the bottom
tier to walk on. The problem is that the green blocks are not real and you
fall through. Well after breaking all the blocks to clear a path I then killed
enough of the monsters that roam up there to get one that gave me a "scroll"
this sped up the character enough so that I got a running start and just as I
hit the green blocks I pressed the "A" button to jump and was able to get to the
other side. I have also found the "fathers" crown but have been unable as yet
to beat the giant monster at the end.

Use the "Father" because I believe you will need the "hammer".
Go down to the point where the Dragon is, go left to where you need to
move/break a block. After getting by that block go DOWN, the character
will experience a free fall for a couple of scenes. After the free fall
the character will need to use the hammer to pound at a block overhead
and to the right. These blocks are meaningless looking, after pounding the
correct block it will turn into an INN, pound it again and it will turn
into a STORE where the shield can be bought for 95 gps.

| I'll re-read all the good stuff about finding crowns and so on.
But for now - well, I can't deal with this game at all! I bought
it Saturday because it was on sale for $25. I'm determined to have
not wasted my money. But, not being the world's best NES player
anyway, my daughter and I are about the throw up our hands with
this one. I _promised_ her I would "ask the computer" for help.
And help is what I need.
1. How do you get back to the house from the dungeons? Any way
other than simply re-tracing your steps?
2. What do the two items in the shop (or is it inn?) in the big
tree right outside the house do for you? I can get them in
my inventory, but don't know what to do with them once I get
them.
3. In general, I don't have any idea of what to do. Now I'm not
asking for spoilers. (yet) Just - how do you deal with this
technically? Should I pitch the game in the garbage and get
something easier?
Joel
|
296.46 | LotW is tough to get into - but worth it | DDIF::WALSH | Schedule is Job One | Tue Feb 20 1990 12:52 | 39 |
| Don't pitch it yet.
When you first selected a character, you ended up in an "equipment
closet". You can move your character to the item you want, and press
the A button to pick it up. (If you don't have any of the item, or if
the item count is coded in blue, then you can't use that item.)
You can also get into this equipment room by paying 10 gold at any inn.
(Changing the items you are using is important for certain characters.)
This is the only way to pick up an item! Paying for an item or finding
it in a chest puts the item in your equipment room, not in your
available inventory. Believe it or not, this is a feature! You
wouldn't want your active items to be changed arbitrarily on you in
certain areas of the dungeon.
Getting back to the house from the dungeon can be accomplished by one
of the items in the tree. Simply select it, and you'll end up near
home.
I believe the other item in the tree is a healing potion. If you die
while this potion is your selected item, instead of dying, you are
healed. I haven't been there for a while - it may be a magic potion,
that fills up your magic points when selected.
To get started - explore! There are lots of items you need to find.
Some you need to buy in shops, some you need to find in a chest. Note
that you need to be *very* creative to get certain characters through
certain rooms!
There are some spots in the dungeon that only one character can get to.
And make sure that you check out the floor and sidewalls carefully.
There are some hidden holes that simply must be found.
I found using the father to be the easiest, at first. He has the most
powerful magic, and can cut down most of the wimpier monsters without
any trouble.

Thanks for the tips. They will be very helpful. You inspire me
to avoid moving this towards the trash can.
Unfortunately, my ignorance is more basic than you imagined. Like...
suppose you have in your inventory the thing you need to warp back
to the house. How do you take advantage of it? Which buttons do
you push, and under what circumstances?
I'm anxious to have fun with this, be creative and all that. But
it's been a drag so far because I don't even know the mechanics.

Not sure which buttons but, I believe the combination of the "select" , "Arrow"
and "B" buttons will allow you to select and use items in your inventory.
Use the "Select" key to activate the option and then the "arrow" keys to
move the frame around the object. Then while your character is moving around
the dungeon, if you want to use the selected object I believe you use
the "B" button. Anyway its all written up in the instructions.

That's the right idea. I use select, left and right arrows to pick the
item, and then hit select again. However, I beleive that either one of
the A or B buttons also selects the item, as well as taking the normal
A or B reaction. Thus, you can select a new item and jump or shoot at
the same time.

296.50 | is it hopeless? | SANFAN::GRANT_JO | Don't Say `Shank | Wed Feb 21 1990 12:35 | 25 |
| The tips from yesterday were useful. But let me give a specific
example of where I get confused by the directions included with
the game:
It tells you to go to the grandfather and give him a password if
you want to resume a game. It tells you how to put in the password.
It tells you to use the curved arrow to verify the password. The
directions tell you how to abort the process. But - what they
don't tell you is: having entered the password, having verified
it - what next? I've tried every button and the only one that
causes any action is the "start" button. And this puts me back
into character select, but with an entirely new game.
The directions also talk about a particular item which allows
you to "warp" back to the vicinity of the house. But it
doesn't explain how you do that. And so on. Perhaps they
have updated the instruction book and the newer version is
lousy. Help is needed on such basics.
By the way - I took it over to a neighbor who is a NES expert.
He, too, was unable to translate the directions into action.
So at least I'm not the only one...

| Well, the very first time you enter the game its not necessary to use the
password feature you start by selecting a character and progress. When you
want to end the game/session get back to the house and select the grandmother
she will give you a password, write it down and save it. Then when you want
to resume the game (presumably where you left off) select the grandfather
and provide him with the password that you were last given, this allows
you to pick up where you left off. It really shouldn't be necessary to verify
the password as that will be done when you enter the 32nd character.
If it verifies you then select a character and progress further.

| Regarding selecting the grandfather or grandmother to save, I think
the rule book might have it backwards - I was very confused about
the password at first too. If you select one of them you will get
a little screen with a password filled in. If you select the other
you will get a little screen with blank lines. I thought you could
enter your own password on the blank screen, but you have to take
one that the game generates. So, to save, select the character
who gives you the filled in password and write it down. To resume
your game, select the one with the blanks and carefully fill in
the password you wrote down.
I was also confused about selecting one of your equipment items. Once
you've equipped yourself with 3 items, either at home or in an inn,
you can select the one you want to use. Get out of the home/inn.
Press the SELECT key. This freezes the action on the screen, although
the music will continue. Then use the left and right arrow to activate
whichever item you want.
Note that some items disappear from your equipment and inventory
once they've been selected. They get used up. For example, potions
are pretty obviously used up once you have selected them. There
are a few other items which are too - experiment and see.
I'm a rank beginner at Nintendo stuff, and found the instructions
for Legacy of the Wizard really confusing. It took me 2 evenings
to figure out how to select/change your active equipment item, since
I kept trying to do that in an inn. But now I really like the game.
I was up until 2 last night and finally found the mattock, but got
killed trying to get up the gold to buy it. Oh well. I would use
Poochi at first, since you can get a hang of the controls etc and
see a good part of the dungeon while not worrying about monsters
killing you off. Poochi is good for collecting gold for buying
items, too. I'm going to do that tonight, before going after the
mattock again.

| Thanks for the tips in the last two notes.
Here's a novice strategy. Not advised for experts, but we amateurs
need help prolonging the game.
Go the the first tree (above ground) and select the potion. (elixer
of life, I think)
Go down the ladder. Keep killing guys (and periodically going back
home to re-charge) and you store up gold and keys and other goodies.
When you have an amount you feel comfortable with just go on like
normal. Except you will have more gold and so on to sustain you.
(I'm usually about dead by the time I find an Inn so I need that
gold)
Now I'm sure the experts don't need this crutch. But it sure
prolongs my own playing time.

| Hi Joel, I'm glad to see I'm not the only novice around....
I did what you said, stored up lots of keys and gold, but since
I used Poochi I didn't need any potions.
One hint:
Remember to try "flying" with Poochi. You can't use wings, but
since Poochi is immune to monster attacks, he can grab a ride on
the bats. Remember how bats will stay close by you when they latch
onto you? If you get a bat to stop right below you and then you
jump or press the UP key, the bat will rise up. You can then repeat
this until you're up where you want to be. Fish are REALLY good
for this, since they're pretty predictable. Some critters are apt
to hop away just as they've gotten you stranded near the ceiling,
so be careful. Also, you can't get them to stay under you as you
descend, so make sure you either can survive the fall (have some
lives to spare) or can step onto something. Also, most critters
will not go past the borders of most levels, although SOMEtimes
you can do that.

Who says that idea is for novices only? There are some monsters in the
lower levels that you *must* let hit you! (They can't be hurt until
they hit you, and there is no way to get around them. If your
character can't use armor, then you have to let these monsters hit you.)
Since these monsters *also* tend to hit very hard, you need to find an
inn after running this gauntlet.

| I don't know where the fourth crown is, and I don't have my map handy,
but here's some hints to the mother's crown that should be more or less
accurate:
Go to where you find the shield.
Keep going down as far as you can. You get to a room with an inn at
the beginning, and lots of fake blocks that you have to break to get to
the inn.
Go all the way to the right. Go down from there.
Keep going until you hit bottom (two or three rooms.)
This room has little pedestals with stalagmites on them. Jump over the
pedestals and go to the far left. You'll find a stairway down to the
bottom part of the room.
At this point, try to go down through each of the floor blocks. I
believe it's the third or fourth block that lets you through to a new
room.
From there on, it's not too hard to find the mother's crown - although
you might need to stop at a few inns to change items along the way.
An extra hint, just for free. Somewhere along this route, you can find
the jump boots. But after you find the boots, keep going! You are
getting really close to the mother's crown!

high-resolution, fairly large TV. (our "good" TV has been in
the shop 3 weeks and we have been using our low-resolution,

There are ladders to the right of you, ladders to the left of you,
ladders up, ladders down. There is a block in the upper right-hand
corner which tells what items you have selected. The little
thingies on the top identify how much magic, gold, and so on that
you have. Never knew what those little blue things were.
The game ain't easy, for sure. But now at least I know it isn't
impossible.
If anyone else is discouraged - hang in there.

| I forget to mention this in my previous note. (.64) I'm always
asking for help so here's a tip, especially for novices like
myself. It's just a tip, not a spoiler.
A good way to collect gold - use the daughter with the killer
shoes. Go down two levels and go to the right. You'll drop
down to an inn built into the side of a little mountain.
Creatures keep swimming by. Jump up and land on top of the
creatures. For the first few minutes, almost every one turns
into gold. You don't use up live or magic doing it.
To save time (waiting for the creatures to reappear) after you
have collected your gold or keys or whatever has appeared, get
to the very top of the mountain and jump straight up. You'll
briefly be in another world, and when you come back down the
creatures will be back.
I collected 100 pieces of gold in about ten minutes doing this.
(I was saving up to buy the wings) Also, with an inn right
there, if you run into trouble you can recharge easily.

[SPOILER FOLLOWS]
(I don't know how to do the line feed thing so I will hit the
return a few times. But if you don't want to read a spoiler,
if you're reading this, don't read any more)
1. From dragon, go right as far as you can to the ladder down.
2. Work way to ladder down on lower left of maze.
3. The next room is pretty bare; don't go down the down ladder
here. The brick on the upper right is phoney; break it and go
to the next room.
4. Go right, all the way, to ladder down on lower right.
5. There's a grey pyramid in the next room. Cut through bricks
(you don't need special items) to ladder down, located towards
left of pyramid.
6. Next scene is another maze. Go to the far left of the maze,
then down, then straight right to the next scene.
7. Go up the stone platforms. Bricks above the top platform
are bogus. Break through to the next scene.
8. This scene is yet another maze. Work up and to the right.
There is a ladder to the left of the shop. Climb up and break
through to the next scene. This is the scene with the crown.
9. Directly above the inn in this scene are two chests; the
lower one is the crown.
Now - I got this as crown #2, with Pochi. But if you are doing
this as crown #3 or #4, I don't think Pochi is strong enough to
beat the guardian monsters. This calls for a different approach
once you get into the crown room. I'll just say this - (more
help upon request) - all the chests in this area, except for the
crown, are instant death upon contact to everyone but Pochi!

9. Work way to the top of the scene and go right to next scene.
Go right through this scene, over the purple bricks.
10. You will almost immediately drop down to a cavern with a
lion. Go left, up and through the light blue bricks until you
finally drop back down to the bottom of these bricks. Go right
to the next scene.
11. Go up ladder, go left, and go up the next ladder.
12. Go right when you get to top of the ladder.
13. Go right in this scene and the next. At end of the 2nd scene
(the scene with the "girl" monsters) drop to the bottom and go
back left.
14. go down ladder and drop down to next scene; go right.
15. Go right through next scene, as far as you can. You will
see two ladders up; take the one on the left.
16. Work to lower left of this scene. Bricks on wall are phony.
Break them to the ladder up.
17. Go right, then up to top of the next room, and left to edge
of sidewalk. When you jump down, keep left arrow depressed
because the fifth brick from the bottom is bogus. You will
automatically break it and go through into the next scene.
18. Go left, past the shop above you, to the left wall. Sixth
brick from the top is phoney. Break through it and go left
through the next scene all the way.
19. Go up ladder and work to top right of this scene. Go up
ladder.
20. Work to lower left of the next scene and go down.
21. Go down ladder through the next scene and go down as far as
you can.
22. Work right through all the key doors. Keep going right. You
will drop through bricks to the inn. Here is where you want to
change into the shield and, if you don't have alot of keys left,
the magic key rod. When you fly up out of the inn's area, go right
to the end and drop down. The bricks on your left (in the last
column) are phony and you can break through.
23. Work left, through bricks and key doors, and up ladder. You
will wind up dropping down on the chest with the crown!
Good luck, and have fun!

| re: the fourth guardian
The fourth guardian lives in an interesting area. Put on the shield,
and move until you just see the guardian. You'll see a little ledge
just before the pit where the guardian runs around.
If you watch the guardian closely, you will see that the guardian
cannot reach that ledge.
If that's not enough of a clue...
At the highest part of his jump, the guardian is within range of your
axe, while you stand on that ledge, if you fire diagonally.
Can't seem to get him in range?
You can't just stand on the ledge, or the guardian will hide just below
you. Move back up a step, and then back down. The guardian will
restart his movement pattern, which will bring him back into range.
*Don't* fall off the ledge! If you do, there's a hole down below where
you can hide for a short time - but your chances of survival are very
slim.
Now you can shoot at him, but it doesn't seem to hurt him? ...
You need to get multiple shots away. Notice that the guardian's shots
destroy your axes. Get in multiple shots as fast as you can, so that
you can score some damage with one or more of the axes.
Now you swear you've hit him, but he didn't get hurt? ...
The guardian will take many hits before he starts to loose life. (I
suppose you have to get through his "armor".)
Just keep firing, and you'll eventually get him.

296.89 | Hints for Third Crown? | MFGMEM::BENOIT | | Tue Apr 10 1990 12:43 | 14 |

I've obtained two of the crowns and have been able to locate the
third. I get trashed by the monster before I even get a chance
to look around to set a strategy. Possible spoilers follow form-feed.
This is the mother's crown and I've armed her with the shield,
knuckle and wings. I can't get far enough into the room the
monster's in to find a good vantage point for attack. Any hints?
Thanks,
Mary

| RE: .89
[spoiler follows]
After doing it the way you are doing it, I semi-started over (using
old passwords) and got the crowns in the following order: daughter's,
mother's, father's, generic. The guardian monsters get stronger
but their strength is related to how many crowns you have, rather
than where you found the crown.
I therefore don't know if you can beat the third montster with the
mother. I beat it with the father, and I did it as follows:
1. Shield (of course)
2. Glove (needed for the father's crown)
3. extra life container.
I put on the shield when I grabbed the crown and went over to the
general vicinity of the monster. I then selected the life potion
and made a mad dash to the right. There's a semi-cave over there
and you're relatively safe there. (I don't think the monster hurts
you at all - if you're wearing the shiled - unless he touches you)
Naturally, without the shield I would die quickly. But not
immediately! I would die and select the shield and continue
to the right and duck into the semi-cave. Sooner or later the
monster will get stuck right in front of you and then you
blast him away.

| re: .88 Thanks for the reassurance. That is basically what I've been trying.
I guess I just need a bit more patience with that stratagey and hope for the
best.
re: .-1 I did collect the third crown with the mother. you'll notice she is
the next strongest charachter to the father who is the most powerful. It only
took me 2 tries using the shield to scoot over where the guardian is visible and
shooting as fast as possible then hcanging quickly to the life potion before my
life was exhasuted. upon reincarnation I was just able to defeat the monster
before my life expired again. Actually I did defeat that monster once with the
daughter but the moment after the monster expired one of the left over shots
from the monster did me in.

| Thanks for the tips. I was able to get that last crown and susequently
aquire the sword. I even managed to get the dragon to come to life and reduce
it by one red bar before my demise. But now I have no idea what it was that
caused the dragon to come to life so that I can take a sceond shot at it. Also
once in the screen to do battle with the dragon, it seems that you can no
longer change magical items. Is that correct?

| re: .92
[spoiler follows]
Yes, I don't believe you can change items once the dragon comes
to life. On the other hand, the only thing that works against
the dragon is the sword - you have to have the boy and the
sword to beat the thing.
As for making it come to life, select the sword and jump up and
down under the picture. I seem to recall that about two steps
to the right of the left-hand column works best. But I never
did come up with a sure-fire, totally predictable way to do it.
[additional spoiler on fighting the dragon]
Once you figure out the dragon's patter, and the technique,
beating it is easy. As soon as you notice that you're going
to be zapped into the dragon's lair, do the left directional
arrow. You've noticed no doubt that when you first get near
the dragon you are right next to him, and being there kills
you quickly.
Go to the far left of the screen and watch the pattern. You'll
notice that he moves up and down, right to left, left to right.
When he is at his farthest right, move towards him and start
shooting continuously, waiting for him to move into contact
with the swords. The instant you see the swords touch him,
get back to the left where you are safe.
You'll smash him bit-by-bit using this technique. Every breath
of his fire takes 10-20 life points off you, so err on the side
of caution. The key is to let the dragon move _into_ the swords,
and be very careful. Get the rhythm and you'll win the game!

| It seems that just having the sword selected and being in the vicinity of
the left column is all it takes to wake up the dragon. its best to approach that
point with full life as what you have is where you start. however magic and those
other quantities are irrelevant at that point. I also found it easiest to do in
the dragon by pressing bot a and b simultaneously.
The end is a little disapointing. Its cute and all but not real imaginitive.
some of the other games really outshine the ending on this one. of course I've
seen one or two which are a bit worse as well.
Thanks for the help.

| Anyone still playing Legacy? I need some help with the father's crown.
Possible spoiler follows form-feed.
The crown I'm talking about requires the movement of several blocks in
order the clear the way. The area I'm having trouble with is getting
to the shop where the floor block disappears. I just can't seem to
move the blocks the proper way to get to the shop. I'm stuck in the
area where the stalagmite (tite?) blocks you from going left. Any
helpful hints on how to move the blocks would be mucho appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary

| Re .95 (spoiler)
Mary,
You have to attack it from the oppsite direction. Maneuver the blocks
so that you come in from the upper left corner of the screen. That way
you can push the block by the stalagmite to the right.
Question. Can ANYBODY out there please....please....please give me the
exact location of the high jumping boots. I've ben everywhere and am
stuck at this point. Thanks.

Re .96
That's what I'm having trouble with. I can't move the blocks out of my
way so that I can get to the left of the screen. I need some technique
tips on how to actually move the blocks. I think I need to jump up and
move a block down, but I keep moving it to the left accidently,
blocking my progress to the left of the screen.
Thanks,

| Re .97
Mary,
I agree, it's the hardest part of the game. When I want to move the
block either up or down I stand DIRECTLY on top or below the block and
make sure I'm solidly on either the up or down arrow key. For side to
side movement, I cheat to the side I want the block moved to and again
make sure that I'm pressing the arrow key in the direction I want the
block to go. It IS tricky and I've been frustrated with blocks moving
in the wrong direction more than once. Good luck and let me know how it
works.
Any ideas on the jump boots for me in return??????? :-)

296.99 | tips on moving blocks | SANFAN::GRANT_JO | Don't Say 'Shank' | Tue Jun 26 1990 19:16 | 16 |
| I'm not going to put a spoiler feed here because it is purely
technical advice.
One of the keys to block moving is to move the arrow _after_ you
come back down on the block. It's a timing issue:
1. Jump
2. Land
3. Move directional arrow in the proper direction.
Now you do this in rapid sequence. I suggest you find a room with
blocks on the floor and few monsters to practice. That's what I
did, anyway, and the practice worked miracles!

Thanks to .98 and .99. I'll have to do some practicing :-(
Re the Jump Boots, major spoiler follows form-feed.
From the screen where the Dragon is, go UP the staircase on the FAR
RIGHT.
RIGHT to the next room.
UP and all the way to the RIGHT.
In next room, go RIGHT and use wings (I used the mother for this) to go
UP.
Go UP, LEFT, UP and RIGHT (all within same screen) to up staircase that
is blocked. Move block, go UP.
Use wings to go UP over the stack of Purple blocks and go LEFT. Exit
the room at upper left hand corner.
Go LEFT. Shop is on top of double row of purple blocks.
You need the Mother with the Wings and whatever the tool is called that
she uses to move blocks.
