293.0. "Game Boy Article" by MAGIC1::BEAUDET (JUNK_YARD_DOG! DTN:297-6276) Tue Jul 11 1989 10:24
In the Boston Herald, Tuesday, July 11, 1989
In the Business section - page 25
An article on Nintendo - highlighting "Game Boy"
Highlights:
* 1.7 billion sales 1988 - projected 3.4 billion in 1989
* expectations of 1.2 million pocket size GAME BOY machines in
stores by December
* Nintendo's "core audience" is 8 to 15 yr olds
* GAME BOY expected to appeal to parents who "...want to learn
the games alone, away from their children, without being
embarrased..."
* Direct competition expected from Atari's "Lynx" which has more
high-tech features and is expected in stores by fall.
Comparison -
o Lynx has 3.5" color screen - Game Boy has 2.5" black and white
o Game Boy allows 2 players to hook their machines together
Lynx allows 16 links!
o Lynx retails for $149.95 - Game Boy $89.95
(Atari to announce major software products for Lynx in several
weeks)
* Game Boy cartridge called "Mario Land" puts the brothers in a
plane and underwater in a submarine.
* Additional competition expected from NEC's & Sega's newly introduced
16 bit games.
* Analysis insist Nintendo in "top position" because of best software.
* Nintendo talking with AT&T...
Interesting reading!
