257.0. "JACKAL" by GEMVAX::GRANT () Wed Apr 19 1989 12:31

I looked through all the base notes, but I didn't see a note about
Jackal.

Jackal can be played as a one-player game, or as a two-player
cooperative game (both players on the screen at the same time).
It's great!

The object of the game is to rescue prisoners on six different levels,
and drop them off at the helicopter near the end of each level. But
don't take too long; if you do, the helicopter will leave before you
get there!

You drive an all-terrain attack jeep equipped with machine guns and
grenades or missiles. Along the way you are threatened by cannon,
troop transports, planes, jeeps, tanks, helicopters, submarines,
gunboats, and other such things, depending on the level that you are
on. Each level is progressively difficult.

Each level has a hidden star. The star does something special once you
collect it, depending on the level.

At the end of each level, there is what we call a "death trap". VERY
hard to get through!

If anyone has Jackal, let's talk about it here.

257.1Okay but not our favoriteHYEND::JHALLWed Apr 19 1989 13:445
    We rented this game at our local video store. Thought it was okay
    but not real challenging, we completed it in the one night we
    had it rented for. I guess we really did not like it.

257.2star in rice paddy area?GEMVAX::GRANTWed Apr 19 1989 14:3112
One NIGHT?!? Oh well, as I mentioned in my introductory note, we just
got our Nintendo recently. Maybe the fact that it took my son WEEKS
to get through this game is because he/we are reasonably inexperienced
at playing these games.

A quick question: has anyone found the star in the rice paddy area?
We've located the star in each of the other levels, but not on that
level.

Thanks,

Marleen
257.3I like it......USMFG::NROSTANZOWed Apr 19 1989 15:2114
    I think that this is a tough game. We can only get to the third
    level. I have yet to see a STAR though. Can you explain.

    My overall opinion of this game is that it is fun, and challenging.
     I expecially like being able to play this game with a partner (at
    the same time). We just got this game recently so we really haven't
    had a chance to try to many differenct strategies.

    (oops typo - I meant -especially-)

    P.S. Any hints you can give me on how I can get to the higher levels??

257.4stars and hints GEMVAX::GRANTThu Apr 20 1989 13:1248
RE: .3

I'll talk to my son over the weekend (he and my husband do most
of the playing for this game), and early next week I'll put in the
location of the stars. I don't remember them all, but he certainly
does!

I'll also put in hints on getting through level three. What part
of level three are you up to? Are you stuck at the "death trap"
(the place where the background music starts playing really fast)?

A word about the stars:

They are hidden, and can't be seen until you shoot the area
in which they are.

<spoiler>

For example, on one of the levels (I think that it is level one),
there are three stationary cannon positioned on a diagonal near
the tree line, sort of like this:

              -------------+
                     X     |
                   X       |
                  X        |
                           |

If you travel along the tree line (at the right side of the screen)
and fire into the corner, a star will appear approximately where
the asterisk is:

              -------------+
                     X   * |
                   X       |
                  X        |
                           |

If you run the star over with the jeep, the three cannon are blown
up and can't hurt you.

Some stars take out enemy fire power, as in this example; other stars
give you better fire power.

257.5Anyone finish yetHPSMEG::CLARKMon May 08 1989 19:078
    I have been playing Jackal for about two months. I have no problem
    making it to the last "death trap" but I get killed almost imediately
    after I get there. Does anyone know if the can be completed with
    just grenades or is full power-up needed? Any help on finishing
    this game would be greatly appreciated, also if anyone has any
    questions on how to get as far as I have just ask.

	I have gotten through the last stage of this game. I would never have
been able to do it without using the Quickshot Joystick controller. It took
several tries with this controller before I finally made it. If I remember
correctly the key to success for me was to have as many one up's as possible
when getting to the final stage. There is so much going on in this last stage
that it was impossible to destroy the main turret without getting destroyed at
least once. I think that it was beneficial to have full power when first
entering the area.

        Just a hint, get the small turrets first and then go after the main
turret. Are you using the regular controller? I found this game to be quite a
challenging and fun shoot 'em up game. Good luck!

257.7general advice/tips wanted... DEMON::CHALMERSSki or die...Mon Nov 25 1991 14:0321
    This note's been inactive for a long time, but hopefully someone out
    there can help me.

    We recently picked this game up for short money (i.e. FREE), and are
    having fun with it. We really enjoy games that allow two players to
    play interactively. (Pointers to ther such games, like Contra and Super
    C are also welcome.)

    We can get to the end of the second level consistently (but always get
    smoked at the end), and once even managed to get to level 4 (mostly
    thru dumb luck.) However, we had used up all of our continues and
    weren't able to duplicate the effort. We would appreciate any and all
    pointers or tips that could help us (if needed), especially information
    about starting the game with extra men (i.e. does the 'Konami Code' work
    with Jackal?), finding the stars, finding 1-ups, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

    ref -1.

    Freddie,

    	I am very glad there is still someone out there playing this game.
    A friend of mine and I must have spent 100's of hours playing this.

    A very good tip is for you both to work together and " TAKE YOUR TIME
    "..
    Try to let one man at a time get the "quad" (4 way) blaster dont both go
    out trying to get all the power at the same time.

    Play set up, have one man play decoy and the other with the quad
    blaster blow the (&(*&( up.

    Watch for a pattern, its there the same way every time!!!!

    Make sure you save all the men.... you get 1ups and hardware for this.

    If you have any specific problems... let me know.

    Bob,

    thanks for the response. My buddy and I have already learned the hard
    way to follow many of the tips you've listed. We enjoy the game very
    much for it's two-player capability, and although it seems primitive
    when compared to some other two-player games (especially on Sega
    Genesis), we still enjoy it.

    We've made it the 'Stone Bridge' level (sorry, I don't have the
    instruction manual, so I don't remember the level number) a few times,
    but by then we've used up all of our continues and wind up getting
    killed.

    If you have any tips regarding getting extra lives, locations of hidden
    stars, using a Konami 'cheat' (Up-Down-left-right-A-B, or some such
    combination) to start with more than 5 lives, etx. I'd appreciate it.
    Also, if you have a copy of the instruction book, I'd be in your debt.

    Freddie

    P.S. My cousin has a Game Genie, and has offered to loan it to us. It
    would allow us to have an infinate supply of lives, but somehow that
    just doesn't seem fair. We'll keep plugging away without it.

    Great game!! My wife just got Game Genie and within 1.5 hours completed
    2 years of fighting the last level.
