It is a two (alternating) player game by ULTRA SOFT, and
it was released 1/88. Other than that, I have seen it but
have no idea what it is really about. The name sounds
familiar, maybe it is an arcade-type game. Probably goes
for about $40.
Good luck.
Try entry 197. It is an index of magazine articles.

| Gyruss has been in arcades for a while; you might get a better
impression there. I am not familiar with the Nintendo version.
It is basically a shooting game, except it is not left to right or
otherwise organized like more familiar games. Your ship moves in a
circle, always pointing inward. Enemy ships come from various
locations, move into formation in the circle, and move out. You shoot
them and occasional traps and mines they release.

| I went out and bought the game last night for both my nephew and
husband, but it turns out that I like it better than both. This
is the first game that I am really giving my husband a challenge
with and it is great.

243.4 | AN UNDERRATED GAME... | CLEVER::MAILROOM | | Mon Aug 14 1989 17:27 | 21 |
| I`m suprised no one seems to be playing this game. I think
this game is AWSOME! It is alot like the archade version, but it
has a few twists and a bit of stratagy thrown in to make it (in
my opinion) even better then the coin-op.
I have one nit and one question.
The nit;
I wish two could play at once alternating.
The question;
Does anyone know an easy way to destroy the thing with the
long swinging arms? I think it`s the one before Jupiter or Mars.
I can get to him every time, but I lose most of my ships trying
to kill him.
Any help on this question or any comments in general on this
game welcome.
Thanks

243.5 | Some help on Gyress | JULIET::HIEBERT_RO | | Fri Dec 22 1989 18:22 | 50 |
| Just a little "note" on that bug with the long arms. I have
met up with him plenty of times. Therefore maybe I can add some
words of wisdom. I have found out that as he spins in his little
circle, you need to position yourself a little bit behind him, go-
ing in the same direction. (naturally , watching out for those
long arms). But if you can find this sweet little spot, his arms
cannot get you , but you can get him. Just be careful when he
changes direction. In case you dont know but I will assume you
do, it will take approx. 5 to 10 hits to kill him.
I also agree with you in regards to this being a great game.
I enjoyed the video game so much, I purchased Gyress. I have only
completed it once. What a thrill, actually , more for my wife be-
cause know she doesn't have to wait an hour before she can use our
color TV. One thing I didn't discover is any "super-tricks". I
don't even know how to save a game. Any hints you might have
would be terrific.
Only read on if you want to know what its like to finish******
The finish is not all that spectacular. Once defeating the
sun (which is a mass of shooting fire balls), you compete against
an eyeball. That's right , an eyeball. Well once the eye is
dusted , you have won! Whoopie, it shows your little ship circling
around the planet and then its back to planet #1.
I guess my favorite part is the mass of fireballs. (I also realized
that your note is dated "august" so you may have very well already
recieved answers to your questions.)
Enjoy

243.6 | Arcade game => 5200 game => Nintendo game! | LUDWIG::PHILLIPS | Music of the spheres. | Mon Mar 12 1990 09:07 | 15 |
| I lucked out yesterday and found GYRUSS at a flea market (in its
shrink wrap, yet!) for $20. I've been a fan of this game for some
time; even had it on the (*gasp!*) Atari 5200 system. The Atari
version was pretty intense on its own; the Nintendo version is even
better!
BTW - isn't it a few years from now that Pluto will cross Neptune's
orbit to become once again the outermost planet of our solar system?
Does this mean that Ultra will have to issue an upgrade package
to keep our planets in order? ;-)
--Eric--
P.S. Re. -1 I'll try that tip; that critter with the arms is as
far as I got before getting wasted....

243.7 | It's great. I love it. | DECWET::HELSEL | Legitimate sporting purpose | Fri Apr 27 1990 15:58 | 13 |
| I bought Gyruss and I think it's a great game. Then again I enjoy
arcade games like Asteroids, Joust and Space Invaders.
In my opinion, the graphics, sound and over all objective of this game
are great. The only glitch I see is that sometimes too much stuff
happens at once and the stuff coming at you slows down for a
microsecond or two (ie the processor can't keep up with the s/w).
This game can be bought most places for $19.00. In my book, this is
the best deal I've seen in Nintendo software. If you think you are
interested, you better hurry because it has been discontinued.

| I was leafing through my old NINTNDO POWER issues when I came across
a handy little trick for Gyruss. It is a variation of the Konami
"thirty man" start.
<startup procedure behind spoiler>
When you power up the game, you'll see an Ultra copyright screen
then a title screen. When the title screen appears, press A,B,right,
left, right, left, down, down, up, up and press START. You'll see
the title screen with "select A or B-type fighter". Quickly select
and press START (it automatically defaults to the one I want, so
I simply press START :^).....) If you've done this correctly, on
the left of the screen where your reserve fighters are listed, you'll
see not four, but seven. Not only that, but there are ALSO about
23 "unseen" reserve fighters, bringing your total to approximately
thirty.
I tried the procedure and it works ..... I just haven't had the
time to play the long game yet! ;^)

| Eric,
Great! Thanks!
I haven't beaten this game yet, but I have gotten as far as jupiter.
That monster that throws the sweet potatoe-looking things has me
stumped. Once you pound him a few times with photon bombs, he starts
swinging arms at you and it's sure death! I can't wait to give this a
try.
Maybe I'm small minded, but I can play this game for hours on end.
re: .9
I'm not in MA, so I can't help you. I can tell you that I've seen it
at Fred Meyers' in Bellevue WA for $19. You may have to poke around
as the clerk told me it's been discontinued.

Go for it! The first time I tried the "30 man" game, I made it

back a bit, but the third time I nailed him! (After a solid half-hour
of playing!)
Good luck, Starfighter!

| I tried the 30 ships last night. I made it all the way to the end of
screen 36, which I believe is the end of the game. I was on my last
ship when I blew up the round sphere in the middle that was sending the
smaller spheres at me. When I blew the last port, I thought "This must
be the end of the game" and a piece of debris hit me and nailed me.
Talk about disappointment. I was sure I had won it.
*sigh*
I guess I have to wait for another chance. And, yes, it takes me a
good half hour to play to the end.

| Has anyone found it around the Nashua, NH area? Gyruss was always my
favorite game at the arcade. I was at a friends house last weekend
and she has Gyruss. I couldn't put it down. I ran right out the next
day and bought a Nintendo. Now to find Gyruss. At $19.00, even
better. Can a Nintendo store order any Nintendo game for you that
they don't carry?
Thanks, Pam

You might want to check your nearest Toys R Us store .... I was

there. All things being equal, if it's at one store, it's at them

reading his note and they said they had several. Picked one up before
they dissappear forever. They have about 40-50 tickets for gyruss.

| What a game. I like it much better than the arcade version.
Without the 30 men, I can only make it up to the boss with the
flying arms (stage 19). (funny how .10 said that it looks like
sweet potatoes are being thrown, they look like little sneakers to me).
I've played a few times with the 30 ships. The first time I made it
to stage 24 (was playing awful). Second time to stage 31. 3rd
time to stage 34 and last night I made it to stage 39 before getting
wasted. 1 warp left to the sun. I'm kind of glad I got blown away.
Will keep the suspence a little longer. The boss before you make it
to Mercury (around stage 36) is cool!

| By the way, in the chance stages there is a way to get a "up" object.
When you hit it, you get a new ship. I've only seen it appear a couple
of times. It seems my husband gets one in every chance stage. Is
there something special you have to do in order to get this red "up"
object to appear". I've gotten "perfect" chance rounds but still
don't always see it.
Thanks, Pam

243.18 | Still trying to save the universe | DECWET::HELSEL | Legitimate sporting purpose | Thu Jun 28 1990 13:30 | 17 |
| With 30 ships, I get to stage 40 every time. I usually have 7 or 10
ships left when i get there. I just can't figure out how to kill this
thing. It has an eye that opens every now and then. I figure this is
the key but I can't put him away. I've tried at least 10 times.
As for that red dot that gives the free ship, I don't know how to get
it to come up. Sometimes it just comes up. You've probably realized
by now that you get a little jingle when you get a free ship. If you
notice, when you get up into the 30 something stages, you start getting
free ships now and then when you are in the heat of battle; indicated
by the jingle sound. Most of the time, I have no idea why I got the
free ship. But I'll take it.
One of these days I'm going to get that last monster. The furstrating
thing is that it takes me about 40 minutes to get to the last screen.

243.19 | | BAGELS::MATSIS | | Thu Jun 28 1990 16:00 | 18 |
| Brett, I believe that when you get the free ship in the middle of a
battle it is because of your points. I notice you get a free ship at
50,000, 100,000 and 200,000 points (or something like these). It
doesn't seem to be every 50,000 points.
Hmmm, Well I guess I know that there is a EYE in stage 40! ;-)
One question about stage 39. Can you shoot those flying fire balls
(small suns?) or do you just dodge them?
I'm also wondering with the 30 ships, do you actually get new ships
when you hear the jingle or does it stop at 30?
My husband seems to get those red "UP" balls at every chance stage.
There must be some sequence. Maybe hit the odd colored enemy first?
Don't hit it at all? Don't hit the first one? Last one?

The fireballs in stage 39 are indestructible - the first time I
encountered them, I tried shooting to no avail. Fortunately, they
are relatively easy to maneuver around.....
The last boss in stage 40 is no pushover, but he CAN be destroyed.
Go to it, Starfighter!

243.21 | I know I can beat him | DECWET::HELSEL | Legitimate sporting purpose | Thu Jun 28 1990 20:30 | 12 |
| Yea, you have to dodge the fireballs.
I figure to get to the eye, you have to shoot enough of the blue balls
coming at you to have a space to work in. If you are on an "X
diagonal" you get shot. If you are on the X axis or the y axis, then
you seem to have a better chance. I don't know how to kill the eye.
I figure you have to blast it 10 times while it's open.....at least
that would be consistent with the rest of the game. My blood pressure
stays pretty low until I get up into the 30's. Then I get p*$$ed.
:-)
