Got this game this weekend. Anyone else out there have or seen it? The game is by Jaleco and the instructions are 36 pages long! This discussion is fairly long so please bare with me. Here's the game story, weapons and play along with a few observations. The Legend of Altile... In the distant future, overpopulation and pollution have plunged planet Earth into near ruin. World leaders have no way to solve the crisis, so they turn to Altile, a very wise scientist for possible answers. Altile is a genius and after a short period of thought, devises a plan to rid Earth of this terrible curse. In the year 2395 Earth's scientists and engineers follow Altile's plans and construct an artificial planet in the far reaches of the galaxy that will be home to a portion of the overpopulated Earth's people. All the people of Earth work together to complete and colonize the artificial planet. Unfortunately, Altile dies shortly after crafting his plans for the new world, and never sees his dreams come true. So, in his memory, the people name the planet Altile. Besides providing a new and peaceful home for the people of Earth, the new planet also unites the nations of the Earth. Thoughts of war disappear and the half-man/half-machine RoboWarriors, who have defended the Earth for so long, are deactivated, and the two planets, Earth and Altile exist in harmony. The Aliens Invade But in the year 2036 A.A. (After Altile), led by their ruthless dictator Xur, the Xantho Empire from another dimension invade Altile, deactivating its specially constructed weather-control system and plunging the peace loving people of Altile into bitter cold. The Xantho aliens transform the surface of the beautiful green planet into barren brown wasteland for their own diabolical uses. The inhabitants of Altile flee underground to escape the frigid temperatures that the Xantho Empire have inflicted on their planet. Before leaving, however, they send a message to their sister planet Earth begging for help. Although the Xanthos are cruel, the brave people of Altile vow never to surrender. Help Arrives The Earth scientists receive the Altile plea and quickly reactivate the Z-type Earth Defense cyborg (ZED), the most powerful of all RoboWarriors. They ready ZED for combat, preparing their fastest spaceship to send him across the galaxy to Altile. ZED lands in Landor on Altile, far from the alien Xantho main invasion force, yet he can see the terrible destruction Xur and his Xantho Empire have inflicted upon Altile--green plants withered, beautiful birds and animals gone. ZED knows he has to reach the weather-control station, but it's feared that Xur himself commands the vital base. Before disappearing underground the people of Altile have left many assorted energy capsules hidden on the surface of their planet. These energy capsules not only increase the fighting abilities of the RoboWarrior, but other special functions as well. ZED knows he must find the capsules to topple the Xanthos and restore freedom to Altile. World of Wonder As you will discover Altile is a magical land filled with wonderful surprises and plenty of challenges. You'll encounter dozens of strange aliens and see fantastic sights as you guide Zed on his quest above and below the surface of Altile. On your way to a final confrontation with Xur, you must use all your weapons and bombs to uncover the secret powers left by the people of Altile in order to help defeat the lords of Xanthos. It's a dangerous mission, but tremendous rewards await ZED and the people of Altile should you succeed. The Game You are initially dropped into an area with bombs, an energy tank and a missile. This area does not scroll as the others. It's called the cyborg training area. There are two screens to deal with. A main screen where the landscape scrolls from right to left as ZED moves right, and a sub screen where you can select special weapons and powers. Zed is equipped with two regular weapons. One are bombs and the other is his ray gun. The bombs can destroy bricks, trees, and aliens but if ZED is standing too close to them when they blow up, he will receive great damage and may even be destroyed. The ray gun destroys most enemies but some take more than one blast to destroy. There are eight different levels of defensive power which are controlled by the amount of score you have accrued. There are eight levels which must be explored to complete the game. I think there are 27 areas to explore including undergrounds and special rooms. Game Items All the game items which are listed here are selected by the sub screen and some of the items do not last forever i.e. the clock lasts for 10 seconds etc... Candle, used underground and lights up a small area around ZED for a period of time. Energy capsule, used to restore ZED's energy. The energy level of ZED continually drops with time. If the energy level expires Zed dies. Clock, used to stop all objects on the screen for 10 seconds. Super Boots, used to make ZED move faster for 20 seconds. Missile, a mighty weapon which has great range and destroys everything in its path. Flash, used to destroy all enemies on the screen. Crossfire, used to enable ZED to fire his laser in four directions at once and lasts for 35 seconds. Megaton Bomb, most powerful weapon will destroy all enemies and blocks which are on the screen. Lamp, is more powerful than the candle and should be used in above ground stages that are dark. There is one more item in the Sub Screen which I haven't got figured out yet that is a P which the instructions say increase the length of ZED's laser. I don't know why it is contained in the sub screen to select. There are other items which help ZED on his quest. One which I haven't found is the life vest. This vest allows Zed to float in the water for 20 seconds. I don't see a space for this item in the sub screen so I don't know how this item is used or if it can be selected. I have made it to a place where I need this vest to get across an area of water. No luck so far in finding it. Other Items Bombs, gives Zed ten extra bombs when collected. Energy Pods, restores ZED's energy by four when collected. Barrier Shield, gives ZED invincibility for 15 seconds from all enemies and his own bomb blasts. Zed will destroy the aliens if he runs into them. Magical Bee, will give ZED one of the Special Powers, Candle, Energy, Missile, Super Boots, Clock, Cross Fire. Medal, used to buy special powers in stores. Chalice, I believe there is only one of these in the first level and it is used to enable ZED to continue to other levels. Key, a special key is hidden at the extreme right of each stage and is used to allow exit from that stage. Special Places There are several areas which are of special interest which are in the game but not easy to gain entrance. Well of Hope, a special area of water that doubles ZED,s bombs and special powers in the sub screen. Room of Idols, a special sanctuary where ZED must destroy statues in the correct order to receive special weapons. Shops, where ZED can purchase special weapons if he has collected enough medals. So far I've gotten through two stages. I am having problems with the third stage because I need to cross water and I haven't found the vest yet. I think this game was well worth the $40.00. I offer this note as a conference to all who may have questions or offer info about this game. Bob

I found out about the vest last night. It's in the sub screen in the upper right block. The problem for me was that it looked like a P. The P which you can get increases your range but does not change the quantity of any item in the sub screen except that the range in the lower left increases by one. Out of all the instruction that are provided for this game the sub screen is not covered at all other than telling you that it's there. I will try to give a pictorial description of the sub screen here in a later note. A few more observations about the game. This game has a continue feature. One problem with the continue feature is that when used, of all quantities of your weapons and special powers are taken away. You lose the range of your laser so you can't shoot very far. If you are in a world where you need a lamp you better make it the first time through if you used your only lamp. If you continue you will lose the lamp, and your in the dark! I made it to Period 3-2 and got destroyed by my own bomb last night. The enemies which attack you in this world come faster and more often. They also shoot at you more often. I haven't made it to one of the Xantho Lords yet. The demonstration screens shows one of the battles with a snake type monster coming out of a well. Looks really tough. My son and I agree that this game reminds us of Link a bit. The only difference that I can see so far is the way that the screen scrolls and a few others. Wish they had Passwords!
