205.0. "SAVE/PASSWORD GAMES" by CRUISE::WBERNIER () Sat Feb 11 1989 21:57

    	Hi,

I searched the conference but didn't find (but could of missed)
a topic for listing games that have "SAVE" or "PASSWORD" features.

By save I mean you can "select save" not hold paddle left push
start while holding button A put one finger on nose while spinning
around 3 times kind of save.

Or a true "PASSWORD FEATURE" (allows/gives password so you can
restart game where you left off)

When shopping for games, they don't say on the box if it has
a save or password feature .

Thats why I think if we could create a list of games with these
features it would help people out when selecting a game to buy.

It s*&*! when you are 3/4 of the way through a games an something
happens and you must start over again from the begining!

Besides a lot of times it gets late and you must stop for the
night and it would be nice to pick up where you left off especially
when playing the game for weeks/months at a time.

    	Thanks

    		Wayne.

    	Me again,

I only have 2 games so far with a save/password feature
    	they are,

    	ZELDA...........save feature

    	Bubble Bobble ? .....password feature

Other games that have the password feature are:

    METALGEAR........ Password
    Kid Icarus....... Password
    METROID.......... Password
    ZELDA II......... Save
    RAMBO............ Password
    DEADLY TOWERS.... Password

    Incidentally,
A lot of games DO say if they have a password feature.
Usually it'll say something like "PASSWORD PAK!" or on the back
in the description it'll say so.

    Good idea having this topic.
It'll save people who just want password paks time and money

205.12Long and wierd passwords.TLE::FUELLEMANNMon Nov 06 1989 11:2916

I have a question about some of these password games.

I just bought "Guardian Legend" by Broderbund (sp?) and
I am wondering why the password that you have to enter
    is so >HUGE<.

Is it more than just a password, because who really uses a
32 character password on their machine at work. And why do
they need all of those non-standard umlaut characters. Is
Broderbund really that concerned with videogame security??

    	I hate "typing" w/o a keyboard.

205.13Encoded game state, not securityEVETPU::WALSHThe Typo KnigMon Nov 06 1989 16:0816
Obviously, it's not a password that's concerned about security. They
aren't trying to keep Aunt Millie from trashing your favorite
character. They're keeping bits, possibly encrypted, that store the
    status of your game.

The more complicated the game, the more status they have to keep, and
the longer the password. The larger the character space, the fewer
characters they need. Thus, funny umlauts.

Note that I don't have the Guardian Legend, but it's pretty obviously
similar to all the other password games I've seen. If this game has a
battery, *and* a password feature, I'm obviously incorrect. However,
my understanding is that they put in a password, or use the battery
    feature - not both.
