178.0. "Bionic Commando" by TRUPUT::JWILLIAMS (Welcome to the Bush League) Fri Dec 30 1988 11:38

I just rented Bionic Commando, and it is absolutely great. The only
thing it lacks is a password feature, but that is a pain I think
I can live with. The play mechanics are marvelous.

You are a bionic commando, initially armed with a rifle and a bionic
arm. You use the rifle to shoot enemies, naturally. You use the
arm to climb obstacles and to pick up objects. Alternatively, you
can use the arm to push away enemies that can't be shot.

The play consists of three parts:

    1) Strategy for moving around to different bases. You fly in a
helicopter while the enemy sends trucks along different roads. This
is not too involved arcade wise.

    2) When you reach a base, you may decend. The base is a side
perspective playfield. You search for headquarters, shooting enemies
and solving puzzles. You can collect special items and receive
directions and hints in a special room.

    3) If you are intercepted by a truck, you decend to an overhead
perspective playfield, where you must shoot and advance past the
    enemy.

The bionic arm is what makes this game really unique. You use it
to climb and to swing from platform to platform. You can't jump.
You can only fire sideways ( in the side perspective ). You have
to use the arm to maneuver yourself into favorable positions.

Now that I've rented it, gotta find out where I can buy it.

178.1Continuing B.C.LANDO::BEHMFri Jan 13 1989 14:4127

	Continuing Bionic Commando
On a few occasions after being killed for the third time
the menu comes up and asks me if I want to start or continue.
It will give you three more lives if you continue, but It
doesn't always do this, in fact its only done it a 2 or 3
times in the (approx) 50 games I've played. . Sometime out of
frustration of being killed I hit several buttons at random.
So I know it will continue if hit the right buttons.
Of course I can never figure out what I did to get the
continue message. Does anybody know the combination of
buttons to hit to get the continue message??
There are other games out there that will continue if you
can decipher the secret codes of continuing. I'm guessing that
these codes are installed as possibly a debugging aid so the
designer doesn't have to start at the beginning every time he gets
killed, and he/she can make their way through to the end game.
But then you would think they would be removed from final
revs for shipping.?? Maybe their just an added feature, puzzle.
We should start a subject in this notesfile to keep track of
continuing codes. Call it say???"Continuing Codes"???? It may
be a while before I get time to read through this notesfile
and compile list of the ones I've already seen go by. If you
should have a list already, please submit it. Steve

Now, I haven't verified this, but I think the continues accumulate
every time you pick up an eagle when you encounter the enemy in
the trucks. There is apparently no limit to the number of continues
you can accumulate, last night I had 6 at one point. It is worth
investigating, as in the instruction manual it says that the eagle
increases your "power". I think I'll try it tonight.

I would have tried it last night, except I was too busy blowing
    area 12 into little bits.

178.6ARGH!!!CURIE::AWILLIAMSNot this hare, cueball!!Wed Sep 26 1990 10:0826
After renting this game a couple of times and really enjoying it, I
finally bought it last week (a real bargain, too; $20 at Electronics
Boutique). And I've been playing it not quite non-stop; that 'til the
other night when I got stuck and couldn't get out...

One of the real annoying things with this game is that if you get
yourself into a situation where you're supposed to have a certain piece
of equipment to continue and you don't, there's no way to get out of
that situation. You can't go back and re-select the right equipment.
You can't even "kill yourself" to re-start game play. You're stuck and
the only way to get out of it is to reset the game which starts
    everything over from scratch.

So imagine my frustration the other night when after playing for close
to an hour and a half, I had cleared areas 1 through 6 and many of the
connected areas (13, 14, 16, etc.) and was on my way to area 7 and got
stuck. I had selected my equipment for area 7, got down there, and
couldn't blast through the wall to get things started, and I had the
rocket gun too!!! ARGH!!! And I haven't played it since...

So are there any kind souls out there who've played this game and can
help me get through this "gotcha"?? I really don't want to spend
another hour and a half to get to that point just to experiment and
fail and start all over again... Help?? Please??

There is a way to get out. However, I forget exactly what I did.
Just try moving to the left instead of the right and hit the buttons.
But several times I have managed to get out of a scene without
    completing it.

This is a great game. And for $20 I think it would be a steal.

Spoiler on how to exit from a screen
	without having to hit RESET:

	Exit = A + B + START buttons.  Press them
	at the same time.

If you want to know what you need to get
by those walls, just ask here. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip!! I tried it last night and it worked like a
charm!! I even got the right equipment to make it through the wall (I
had been trying from one area to the next in numerical order) and
eventually rescued Super Joe. But I quit without finishing the whole
game because it was getting a wee bit past my bedtime...

    Thanks again!!

When you transport from one area to another, try to meet up
with the opponent who travel around in the choppers or trucks.
The in the combat scene, you will see the Eagles on the ground.
Just walk over them and you will pick them up.

	Good luck!

You'll have to explain this a little further. I never had a problem
getting to a level, but once there I did have difficulty getting
through it without the right weapon. Might this be the one on the
sea with a wall in front of you at the start?

I do recall getting this once, too. But not too sure what
I did to correct that. I know you have to completely go
through 1-7 and get the weapons before proceeding to 8.
Are you skipping over those areas to get to 8?

178.17?/+ some hints.ORIENT::RAINVILLEWed Jan 09 1991 08:5223

In the book/manual it shows you various weapons you pick up
through-out different stages and what each weapon does. it also
shows variuos things such as iron boots and a helmet etc. my
question is (how do you kick) with the boots and where do you find
the helmet? the manual doesn't explain how to use the boots. I
almost made it thru the final zone (12) I was so close, I had to
swing across a bed of spikes but fell short of the final doorway.
it took me 3 hours to get to the final zone. I wish there was a
password so you could pick up where you left off. also I found that
if you (in zone 5) climb the tower and get past the helicopter
guys, after you read the message in the computer room asking you
if your from the federation, you then exit the room and stay on the
ledge and shoot the soldiers as they come down and collect the
bullets. if you continue to collect bullets you will notice in the
top left section of the screen these green symbols. this will allow
you to be hit by more bullets yourself and you won't die so
quickly. I found that if you do this say for 5 minutes you will get
about 7-8 symbols and this helps out alot on your final climb to
the top. also this will carry over to all the other zones.

Well, I finally beat this game and it only took me two continues to
do it! I made it all the way through without finding the helmet and
without using the iron boots or the rapid fire device. Never figured
out what the boots were for.

    Great game!
