174.0. "BLADES OF STEEL" by CSC32::J_WARDLE (Hawaii,Tahiti,Bermuda,NewJersey) Wed Dec 21 1988 12:53

I picked up "Blades of Steel" yesterday and I really like it. It's
way better than the previous hockey game. The players look like
    real hockey players.

You can choose three levels of play; Amateur, College, Pro.
The teams are the same at all levels of play but the skill level
    varies.

You can pass the puck accurately, you can check. If you check a
player just right you get in a fight. When a fight starts, the screen
changes from the ice to a blowup of the fight. You duke it out with
the other guy. There is a power rating above the two fighters and
it gets lower each time you get hit (like Punch-Out). The loser
of the fight gets the penalty...what a riot.

If the game ends in a tie each team gets five one on one shots at
the goalie. The most in wins. I tied the computer at 3 shots apiece
and then it becomes sudden death.

You can play an exhibition game or you can choose tournament play.
In tournament play the machine sets the teams up in brackets (just
like a regular tournament) and the winners advance to the next round.

Overall, I'd say the game is excellent.

Hey JoBoS, can this game be played with 2 players against each other?

Would this be good for 5-8 year old kids, or would the other hockey
    game be better for them?

174.2Much better than ICE HOCKEYTHEHUT::BILAFERsay La VWed Dec 28 1988 10:018
My family just got Blades of Steel for Christmas. We borrowed ICE
HOCKEY a few weeks ago from a friend and when we played Blades of
Steel, we were thrilled. Blades of Steel is much more realistic
and easier to play. Blowups of fights and penalty shots. A choice
of real NHL teams. This game is terrific.
And yes, you can go head to head with the computer or another
person. This game is really well done.

174.3Sounds cool!VICKI::SHIPPINGI4NI coming soon...Wed Dec 28 1988 12:477
Real NHL teams? Can you pick from ANY of them, or are there just
certain teams? If so, who are they?

Is this tape out now and readily available? What kind of a price
    range are we talking?

The game is two player or one player. (head to head or head to
    computer).

On the NHL teams, there are about 12 teams, including Boston, Edmonton,
    Los Angeles, New York, etc...

The game is alot better than the other hockey game. NO comparison
in my mind. Plus the music is entertaining, not tedious. Also, the
    players look like real players.

I paid $34.00 for it. Well worth it.

Geez. I don't remember seeing Boston as one of the teams listed.

    The teams I remember were:

    Los Angeles
    Montreal
    Vancouver
    Quebec
    Edmonton
    Minnesota
    New York

I think there were a few more teams, but I don't remember them.

Some teams seem to play better than others. I know that Edmonton
seemed to have better passing and shooting as well as faster skaters.
When I played my brother, that was always the team he wanted to
    be.

An Awesome game!!! (borrowing my brother's comment)

I could've sworn that Boston was one of the teams, but I could be
    wrong.

On talent diff's between teams....I found that whenever I use LA,
I get in lots of fights. But, I haven't had enough time with the
game. I only played three or four games.

    I'll check it out later...

I'm not sure what the big hype is, I don't really like Blades of
    Steel.
I felt it was a pain to find out which guy you are!
The fights are a joke if you have a rapid fire joystick.

I like Ice Hockey better, I think. I mean in Ice Hockey at least I
know where I stand (or skate).

I guess that could be the case. I don't have a rapid fire joystick
and still lose some of the fights.....

>> I felt it was a pain to find out which guy you are!

Why? Your guy is flashing. I have no trouble with this whatsoever.

I also am not able to dominate the computer like I am in Ice Hockey.
I have only won twice at the pro level. I can beat Ice Hockey every
    time...

No Boston?!? They have VANCOUVER and they don't have BOSTON?!?
I guess they needed at least one team with uniforms that looked
truly hideous. If they don't have Boston, I don't know if I
    even want the game!

and Black Hawks, right? I can't believe they have Quebec and
Vancouver and hardly any of the above teams.

It is such a good idea to have actual NHL teams, out of the 21 they
should have picked a few better choices.

I guess the video stores must deal with somebody directly, because
they are renting them now. I heard from Kaybee that they should
have some by early next month and I also heard from Caldor (where
I got my Link cartridge) that they should have some by midmonth,
but in both cases this deals with only particular stores (in Methuen,
    Ma)

174.19good game, but 1 on 1 problem???BTO::SURRELLMon Jan 16 1989 08:5322

Using the "rent & try before u buy" philosophy, I rented
     Blades of Steel this week-end.......

Great game; went over big with my 2 kids (10 & 6) and
     with me too

One question for those of you who have played:

when 1 on 1, did you have problems getting the goalie
to move to try and stop the puck? It seemd to be very
intermittent with the game we had. Maybe it's just
timing, ie: the goalie can't move until after the
          shooter hits the puck.

Other than that, an excellent game; it's been added to our
       "wish list".

Has anyone seen this game in any store in northeast Mass/southern

Well, I've called Trysoft numerous times regarding BoS, which they
kept saying won't be available 'til the end of the month. Now they're
saying `sometime' in February, and I'm getting impatient! February
could mean a couple more days or several weeks so, if anyone anywhere
sees this game, please contact me. I thank you, and my kids thank
    you!

Everybody telling us that it would be available the next month when
actually you couldn't get it until the next ice age. I haven't
even had the chance to rent it yet to try it out, the three copies
    they have are always out!

There is hope, thanks to the mail messages I've received from people
who've recently bought BoS. I guess you (me) just have to keep
trying the local toy stores, especially the days when the shipments
arrive. Kay-Bee Toys at the Methuen Mall gets a shipment today.
Guess where I'm stopping on my way home from work!

I picked up Blades of Steel yesterday at Kay-Bee Toys in the Methuen
Mall. Looks like a fun game with lots of action. But I have one
question: some of the sound effects, particularly the announcer's
voice, seem quite muffled. When he says "face off", it sounds more
like "furzuff". Is this normal? Maybe I'm just expecting too
    much.....

I really like this game, but when your in the pro level and way
ahead, the opposing team will make this great comeback. I know
this is the pro's, but come on, I can play like a pro for the
first two quarter's and then they clean my clock the third know
matter what I do. They just sit there and bang shot's away at
my goal until they score what they need to win. Am I just a
third quarter dog or does the computer have mistakes already
    lined up for me.

174.35CSC32::J_WARDLESHU..final four looks fine in '89Tue Mar 28 1989 13:2614
I have, a couple of times, destroyed the computer.

He does try to make a strong comeback in the third. The real trick
is to play goalie well. What I've found is that if you are moving
and the puck hits you, it goes in. Get the correct angle and stop
moving and you will stop most shots.

I've managed to win the cup at the pro level with Minnesota and
Montreal. I haven't lost to the computer in quite awhile. I've also
found some tricks to scoring goals. I haven't scored 20 goals just
yet, but I'm working on it. My best is 18 goals. When I first got
the game I gave up as many as 21 goals though...

Roy, Toronto has those metallic looking uniforms, right?

BTW - do you notice different characteristics between the teams?
One thing that seems to vary is how/where they shoot the puck. Montreal
and Edmonton seem to shoot from the blue line alot. They also don't
seem to fight as much. But LA and Chicago get in fights all the
    time....

    Jim
174.39One for the OTHER team!SNDCSL::BLEIWASLife begins at 150mphWed Aug 30 1989 12:4523
A couple things: Chicago's uniforms are red AND black in BoS-

The announcer's voice, etc. is 'muffled' because of the way
the designers digitized the voice. I've noticed that other
games with voices (nintendo) have the same problem - maybe
it's a limitation with the system CPU-

Did anyone know that you can score on your own goal? Maybe it has
happened accidentally to you a couple of times, but here is the
way you can do it (basically, when I want to fool around, I score
on my own goal a lot!)

                 - When you are in your own half, and you are nearer
your goalie than any other player, if you hit the pass button you
will pass to the goalie----IF you are facing him.
                 - If you are not facing him, and skating toward the
opponent's goal, AND you are closer to the goalie than any other
player, you will actually shoot at your own goal..You CAN stop the
goal by blocking the shot with your own goalie, but WHY?

    LET IT GO IN!

try it a couple of times!
