168.0. "Hudsons Adventure Island" by HOTAIR::DAVIS (We're Flying!!!) Fri Dec 16 1988 16:05

Just picked up Hudson's Adventure Island....kind of like
Super Mario Brothers...a character that makes his way left to right
across the screen fighting birds, cobras, snails, octopi, and other
various creatures...You have to pick up various kinds of fruit to
keep your energy level up until you reach the end of a round. I
believe it has 8 levels (like SMB) and four rounds per level.

I love it when my kids play these games because they have the time
to find hidden eggs, doors to other places (for more points) and
so forth...

Thanks for the spoiler on the restart. I also love this game. The
only thing I didn't like about it was that I didn't know how to
restart anywhere but 1-1.

probably about the same as Super Mario Brothers.
It's about the same level of difficulty. Although the farthest
I've been able to get so far is to level 3-4. Haven't found any
way to get ahead yet (like going through a secret something and
skipping from 4 to 6,7,8.

I have SMB2, but haven't opened it yet.

More of the same *type* of game, but completely different in
characters, monsters etc..

168.64-1? What's the problem?DPDMAI::DAVISGBGil Davis - N55591Fri Dec 30 1988 13:248
I don't remember if it's in 1-4 or 1-3, but a tough spot is a series
of clouds over water. The clouds are moving down continuously.
You have to jump, jump, jump up to the next cloud to avoid hitting
the water. Then jump to the right to get on the next solid cloud.

I've made it to 6-1 so far. Get's a little nutty by that time.

168.7To Be Continued....CYCLPS::FORTENFri Dec 30 1988 16:0914
I don't know if it's me or a bum cartridge but everytime I try
continuing from where I was last killed, I just end up starting
at the very beginning, 1-1.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. When I die for the last time
I press Up-arrow and then start. I then get the "start" screen and
when I try the up-arrow start again, I start at 1-1.

Also I've made it up to 2-1 when I do this.

I'd really appreciate any help or specifics anyone can give me.

Thanks and have a great "FIRST NIGHT"

168.12RESTARTING GAME FROM DYING POINTSONATA::LEONARDWed Feb 08 1989 12:078
Hi All...
I have been trying to use the "UP START" trick to restart the
game after dying but it doesn't seem to work. I hold down the
"UP" arrow and the "START" button at the same time, but it
still brings me back to the beginning.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong??

168.15CONTINUE for Adventure Island!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBMon Feb 20 1989 09:2018

I couldn't stand it anymore! I called Hudson to find out the
continue sequence. I really don't think that this is a spoiler because of the
difficulty of this game.

In Area 1 Round 1 there is a Hudson bee you must get to enable the
continue sequence. This bee is in an egg and it is on the edge of the cliff
when you can see the G near the end of the round. There is a strawberry there
also. Just stand near the edge and jump.

I've made it to Area 6 Round 1. Need a weapon to continue
from there. I've also found an egg that had a little Higgins face on
it and when I got it I got an extra life. I believe that this has
something to do with how many rings you get. Also, if you get 50,000
points you get an extra Higgins.

Good Luck,
Bob

Hi Ann and Wayne,

There is an Eggplant egg in the ice land that you mentioned. Have
you noticed that there is an egg just before you get to the one which is the
Eggplant egg? There are others through the game. I can't remember exactly
where they are but the one which sticks out in my mind now is the one at the
beginning of 6-1. It's a tough one to get by without breaking.
Have either of you figured out the use of the Key? I stumbled across
it by accident when I wasn't paying much attention to the play of the game.
Let me know if you get past 6-1. Got to try again when I get a chance.

168.19< THE KEY...>SONATA::LEONARDThu Feb 23 1989 16:2714
Bob,

I think the key allows you to go to what we call "Free Fruit Land".
After you get the key in the first iceland you jump on a girder;
stay on the girder and it takes you up to get lots of fruit and
extra points. We have found four of these secret rooms so far
(we've only gotten to level 3-4 so far).

Have you noticed that if you get to level 1-4 with one man that
you get an extra (atta-boy) man from an egg?

Enjoy!

168.22KEY to bonus rooms!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBFri Feb 24 1989 09:0633
RE: -1 & -2

Yes I have gone to the BONUS rooms where you need to jump on spring
boards and collect fruit. These fruit are worth 500 points each. I think they
fill you life up with energy also.

****** Possible mild spoilers *******

The first one that I noticed is in the Ice
land just before you get to the number 3 of that round. There is a platform
with an apple just above. If you don't get the key, the platform falls and
its difficult to jump to the other side and survive. If you do get the key,
the platform quickly rises. The first time I experienced this I thought that
I would be pushed from the platform and die when it rose so I got off as soon
as it started going up. That's why I mentioned that I found what the key did
by mistake. I wasn't paying attention once and didn't jump off the platform
when it rose quickly. I found myself in this bonus room and knew what the key
was for since then. You will most always find a platform which rises to the
bonus room after finding one of these keys. So be on the lookout for the key!
My son is on school vacation this week and has been playing this game
off and on. The weather has been lousy for there time off. He told me that
he made it to level 8-1 yesterday! He won't offer anymore information other
than that he has made it that far. I don't think I want any from him anyway.
I thought at first that this game would be impossible to beat. I have some
hope now but I know that it will not be easy.
Hope this helps all who are playing this game.

I need help getting past 6-1

It seems that every time I jump off the cliff's edge to the
island to begin the game I hit the egg thats there and release
the eggplant inside.

I can make it to the very edge of ths egg 1 out of 3 times
but can only reach 6-2 then die because I loose 1 life to that
egg and loose another to get to 6-2 and loose my last life
getting thru 6-2. Is there a way to aviod this egg on 6-1
every time so I can have 3 lives to work with to get pass 6-2?

168.24Eggplant Omelets Anyone?DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBThu Mar 02 1989 07:5013
Hi Wayne,

Although I have not made it past 6-1, I can get past the eggplant
egg most every time.
POSSIBLE MILD SPOILER

The trick is to double jump. You need to use the B
button on the initial jump but not on the second jump. The key to making it is
in your timing. On the second jump you also need to use the right arrow on the
control pad so you won't hit the egg. Give it a try and let me know how you
make out.

168.25The game we love to hateMISFIT::GEMMELand now here's Mac and Tosh...Wed Apr 26 1989 12:1049
Does anybody still play Adventure Island??

We are up to 8-2 (haven't turned off the unit for about 3 months
now but have gotten *thrown* back to the beginning about 10 times!)
and we are stuck trying to get by the drop-away cloud with the
incomming fish and bouncing red octapus! I got by it once (beats
the h*ll out of me how I did it!) and was killed in section 3 or
4 on my last Higgins. Has anybody figured out how to consistantly
get by this (explatives deleted) fish???

This is one addicting game! The family loves watching while my
wife (she seems to play the most) and I try to get through the game.
My son used to play and has given up since level 5 (he still arm
chair quarterbacks each screen). We are using the Advantage stick
and the "SLOW" feature so we have a fighting chance to work our
way through each scene.

For those who haven't seen this test of skill :

Higgins (the main character) is on an island (possibly to save his
girl friend, a popular quest in these games) and has to navigate
his way through a number of nasties and obsticles while picking
up "food" to keep up his strength. The nasties include (in our
terms, not character names):

spiders racoons bats octapus
flying fish	pigs snails snakes
frogs spinning "heads" birds

and each level has a "boss" to knock off

Obsticles include:

rolling rocks	rocks floating platforms and clouds
fall-away platforms/clouds	icey sections	falling icicles
fires

There are numerous eggs which may be milk, weapons, or a nasty eggplant
(Higgins' most unfavorite food). There are also numerous hidden
sections which give you a chance to pick up points and energy.

You start each session with three Higgins and get a free Higgins
with each 50,000 points. There are eight levels, each having 4
areas, each having 4 sections. Each area has a trophy for extra
points based on your remaining energy at the end of the 4th section.

Great game, we loved Zelda and Link. This is sort of like SMB I.

if you have a weapon and get killed in 7-4 before reaching the end
there is no way to get through those hanging spiders. You know the
ones that are after the spiders that go up one after the other and

impossible to get by. It's like the one going up and down doesn't go

try a momentum (sp?) jump. There are two jumps, the hi jump which you
do when you are "moving", and the low jump from a stand still. you
have to hi jump over the third spider and then low jump while your

168.37Coyote's Warp Harmonica???HESIRI::CERLINGInfinitely InterestingWed Feb 13 1991 17:4119
Help!
Something really weird happened to me while I was playing this game. I
wasn't trying to beat it, I was just running at high speed without
stopping. I was some where near the end of 1-4. You know those coyote
things that run at your back after you pass a red flower? Well, I was
just speeding along, and this coyote starts running behind me. I was in
a big, level clearing. I ran along without stopping, and when the
coyote got close, I jumped into the air. It sped under me. When I
landed, Ishot it twice in the back and killed it. Then, suddenly, this
harmonica thing is in front of me. I'm not sure it was a harmonica, but
it was a little brown box with black squares across it, so that's what
I think it is. Since I was running nonstop, I grabbed it before I got a
good look at it.
Does any body know what on earth that thing was? If you do, TELL ME!!!
I really want to know. My theory is that it lets you warp somehow, but
how to do it is a mystery to me. Please post any questions/comments/
statements in this note. Thanks in advance for any help!!

Does anyone know if part 2 of this game is comming out? I read a very
good review about it. Supposed to be released last month. Anyone know
what the title will be?

The name of Adventure Island's sequel will be this original title:
Adventure Island II.

I don't want to sound impatient, but does any one have any info on the
"Warp Harmonica" I mentioned in .37????

I don't know what that thing was that you saw but if its
bugging you (It would bug the hell out of me!) I would
suggest you call the maker of the game, Hudson Soft
and ask them what it was you made appear.

I don't know thier number offhand but it should be on
the instruction manual or the box. If you find out what it is
let us know.

Does anyone know if there is a code that can advance you to any
level in the game. I don't like leaving my games on for more than
12 hours so if anyone knows a way to jump levels let me know. I always
seem to quit playing the game at level 5.1-5.3 ..

168.42No Warp - Need Help on Level 6BALMER::HUNKELERTurn out the LIGHT!Fri Apr 05 1991 23:5617
(A very frustrating game but addictive!)

As far as the question of the raccoon or whatever comes running at you,
it is not a warp zone of any kind. It simply gives you alot of points.
I have been playing this game for what seems like forever and I still
have not been able to get past world 6. There are no warp zones in
this game. I do have a question, in world 6.3 where in the world do
you get food to continue on to 6.4? I always seem to run out and if I
get lucky enough to spot an egg, it's an eggplant! In fact I think
almost all the eggs in that level are eggplants! I am probably the
only fool out here still playing this game while all the other smarter
people have already thrown theirs across the room! I would really
appreciate some pointers on level 6 if anyone had the paitence enough
to get past there!

Thanks again..... Barb
