154.0. "Sega or Nintendo??" by PAR5::K_CIOFFI () Thu Nov 17 1988 11:09

    Hi,

I've been through the directory, but not each note. Forgive me
if these questions have already been asked......but,

Why is Nintendo more popular than Sega?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of one over the other?
    Can you rent Sega games?
Is the new foot control pad worth it?

I went to the toy store yesterday to get my daughter a Nintendo
set for Christmas. I have never played with any of the games, but she
has, and thinks it's "awesome". I hesitate buying it because I
think it will end up like the Atari (collecting dust somewhere in
our house). Anyway, nice mother that I am, I decided to get her one
anyway. So, went to the store and got confused. I hadn't even
heard of Sega and never used Nintendo (yes, I am from this planet).
The salespeople were telling me that "everyone" wants Sega now because
it's better graphics, better quality, games are made by Sega only,
better 3-D, and better everything else, including more expensive.

Despite their pressure I got Nintendo because I
would rather have my daughter rent the games, try them out, and buy
only what she REALLY likes. The system with the foot pad has 3
games and is $150.00. The regular system that they had is $100.00
with two games, gun, and regular controls. Would the system with
the foot pad be better? I was told that the foot pad won't be sold
separately. Is it really worth it?

Does anyone have experience with both systems, so that I can know
if I made the right choice?

    /Nintendo Novice (or future addict!)

I'd be interested in seeing some good replies to this note since
I've yet to buy either system, don't know a thing about them (and
I am from this planet too), and have the same questions as the previous
    note. Thanks.

I hope he doesn't get mad at me for this...then again, who cares.

One of the guys that works here has both and is selling his SEGA.

He may be a good person to ask. His name is Glenn NEXUS::G_GEIGER.
I'll send him a mail and ask him to reply to this particular topic.
    He already reads this conference.

    Re .0:

I have both and have had them longer than most people. (I bought the
Nintendo before it was in stores locally.)

    > Why is Nintendo more popular than Sega?

Nintendo got a head start. Nintendo let other people publish games for
their system, so they have more.

    > What are the advantages/disadvantages of one over the other?

Nintendo games offer more variety and quality of play. Sega games
    offer slightly better graphics.

    > I hesitate buying it because I think it will end up like the Atari
    > (collecting dust somewhere in our house).

It will not. I had an Atari. The Nintendo offers much, much better
games in terms of depth, challenge, and quality. It entertains
    children and adults.

    > The salespeople were telling me that "everyone" wants Sega now because
    > it's better graphics, better quality, games are made by Sega only,
    > better 3-D, and better everything else, including more expensive.

Do not listen to the salespeople. They are not authorized to speak for
"everyone". The better graphics and quality are only slight. The 3-D
effect is nice, but not absorbing and is a pain to set up. Games are
NOT made by Sega only. Activision recently cut a deal to produce games
under their own name, and other companies are following suit. Several
games are already available for both the Nintendo and the Sega (Wonder
    Boy/Adventure Island, Rambo).

    > I was told that the foot pad won't be sold separately.

That is not true. The power pad will be sold separately eventually; it
is just that current production is going into marketing the complete
    sets.

My recommendation is to get the base Nintendo system unless you have a
SPECIFIC reason for doing otherwise. Get the system with the gun only
if you are sure the gun will be useful. Do not buy a Sega unless you
know of specific games you want to play that are available only for the
Sega. (The only reason I say this is because there are simply more
games for the Nintendo, so it is the better choice, given the
    approximate equality of the systems.)

    re: the gun

My nephew has the gun and rarely uses it. I bought the base unit
and have had no need nor desire for the gun. Just my opinion, but
I think the gun may go the way of the atari. The Nintendo won't.

A good point that I've picked-up somewhere in this file regarding
the Nintendo base system and the system w/gun, the system with the
gun is only $20 more than the base system AND it includes 2 games-
Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. I understand that SMB alone
is in the $30 range, so the $99 system w/gun is the better value.
Just thought I'd pass it along........

Another thing about the gun, is that up to recently, I haven't
seen any games worth my time. That is changing however. 2 games
that I had recently rented for use with the gun, were called GOTCHA
and Freedom Force. I found these games Enjoyable and challenging,
and if is the direction for 'Gun Games', it looks like the gun
    will get more useful!!!

Think of it, You can save money by buying the pack with the gun
    as well. What a country!!

154.7Ninetendo, the system of choiceSETH::JAMESMon Nov 21 1988 07:1625
As a parent of Videogame addicts, I vote for Ninetendo...

Although my kids (10 and 12) do not have a SEGA system, It is only
because they are not interested in it. They have friends who do,
so they are aware of what it can do.

Also, I have just had the opportunity to test Ninetendo's repair
capability. The 12 year old got angry and beat up the control deck.
For a standard $30 repair cost and $5 for postage and insurance,
the control deck was returned in 7 working days. It had been cleaned
thoroughly and repaired and arrived Federal Express.

As for the availability of games, most of my sons friends have the
Ninetendo system, and they are continously trading games. This
also works with a few of their adult friends. As a result, they
have access to many of the released games although they only have
a dozen or so of their own.

You may also want to read the article in the Boston Globe magazine
from yesterday. It had quite a comprehensive review of Ninetendo
    of America.

    Regards,

    Jesse

I am considering get a video game for the family. We number 4.
Myself, my wife, a 5 1/2 yr old son, and a 2 yr old daugther.

I had a NINTENDO when my son was about 3, but he was too young
to understand and use it. We have been comparing the NINTENDO
to SEGA, of course. And I have read thru the comparison info
in this conference. Very useful information, thanks !

    BUT..........
Has anyone out there heard more on the rumor that SEGA is
on its way out. Yes, that's is right folks. SEGA maybe on
the way out of the home and into the video arcade ?

    1. Can anyone out there assist in make the choice ?
    2. Anyone know the scoop in the industry on these two
       giants of home entertainment ?
