| Let's change the direction of this topic. Did you know that SMB
II in the USA is entirely different from SMB II in Japan, and in
fact in the USA is another game with the characters changed?
So wonder what a USA SMB III would be?

| I just known about it.
Certainly, SMB II is difference in Japan and U.S.
SMB II for U.S. is another tytle in Japan.
SMB II (Japan) is hard type of SBM.
There are 3 type mushroom in the SMB II (Japan)
2 are same in SMB.
Another one is a toadstool.
SMB III is very favorable ,so it will be sell in U.S!
BTW SMB IV will run on SUPER FAMICOM this summer.
And NINTENDO is going to have 3 type of game console.
1. NES (=FAMICOM)
2. GAME BOY (See NOTE 120.10)
3. SUPER FAMICOM (16 bit)

| Played this for about 30 minutes last night. Obviously didn't get
very far, but loved what I saw. My daughter thought the music was
great. Have to admit it was rather catchy.
The game I have was imported from Japan through Canada. The cartridge
is about half the size and has an adapter it plugged into. Cartridge
loads into game unit upside down. Price was about $80.00 (Canadian).
No I didn't pay for this. I'm borrowing it.
There was one section where a man speaks and his words are in Japanese.
Sure wish I knew what he was saying.
Looking forward to my own copy.

Odyssey Video
353 Montreal Road
Cornwall
938-0388
Description Film No. Cost
Super Mario 3 $49.99
Super Mario 4 $89.99
2 Cases N/C
(New, no book, no box)
I have the $89.99 game. My question .....what am I playing?
SMB III or SMB IV?
In the game I have-after you get the mushroom and turn into big
Mario, the next thing you get is a feather and then Mario kind of
looks like a raccoon.
Whatever it is....I hope I get one for Christmas.

| I've played Super 3. on a Playchoice 10 and have gotten to the 3rd
stage 2nd world. First you get a mushroom and grow big then you either
get a fire flower or a leaf to grow racoon ears and tail. You use the
tail as a propeller to fly or as a whip. To get to a stage on this
game is wierd. The worlds are mapped out on an top-view, so you have
to get on a stage and then press "A" to go into the stage. The 3
leaders well really 2 leaders I have fought so far are a huge spiny
and a huge koopa troopa. After you beat a leader, you get a treasure
box. The treasure box can contain a mushroom, fire flower, leaf or
finger. The finger turns you into a racoon like a leaf, but instead,
when you press "A", you fly.
If you have any questions, let me now.

| I just returned from Jacksonville Florida after spending three weeks there
enjoying a white Christmas.
Anyway, the Toys R Us down there had the SMB III jacket out, but alas no
tickets. There was just a tag saying coming soon. The case is yellow with
a Mario covering the majority of the box. He's adorned in racoon tail and ears.
After seeing Wizard while on vacation, I can't wait till the game shows up.
Finally, while down there, I found selection and price of games to be much
better than up here. I bought four cartridges while down there, and the
prices were up to $8 less.
As I was in a rush, I neglected to ask the management when they expected the
game.

get many kinds of guys. You can get hammer brother mario you can get
raccon mario you can get invincinle mario you can get frog mario and
two other in which it would be nice for a surprise. After completeting
three stges i think instead of a slot machine used in two you get a
card that has a star cherry etc...
I enjoy the game alot and would give it an eight. You can get warp
zones by blowing a whistle. I know there is at least ten worlds. I wish
the game was a tad more challenging but it is still fun.
If you want to know where you can rent it and if there are copies in on
the shelf you can by it.
Do you still want it this bad
I rented it at Townsend Harbor Video.
They have alot of good games in such as

I played super mario bros 3 . It's great ! A local video store has
it in Fitchburg . Rent a movie on John Fitch Highway. It is the
Japan version and some of it is in Japeneese. There was no directions
with the game but here is a little discription.
It has a screen like the first mario bros. you have a map and
Mario and Luggia take turns going through each screen in the world.
Rather than have to wait for someone to get done once a screen is
cleared or someone dies you switch turns. There are more than 4
screens on some worlds. I only got to the end of world 3, but every
screen was different. At the end of each world you go to a castle
and in the castle there is a boat and you have to find and kill
a creature. If you fail sometimes on your next turn the boat will
sail to another place. It's a very good game. Much better than
the others. Can't wait til it comes out in the U.S. Does anyone
know when ?

| We've only made it to World 3 - another game that doesn't get turned
off for a week...
Neat features -
two player - alternating play and the players can team up or
"compete". Nicest part of this is the "levels"
are short so the other player doesn't have long
to wait for a turn (it reminds me of the Coleco
game "Jumpman Junior").
new abilities - flying, diving, sliding, and a passle of others
sound - new music, good "tension" music
characters - most of the "old feinds" are back, nome nasty new ones
graphics - good effects and color, I think Mario gained a few
pounds, good animation over all
I found our copy at a little "Toy Works" in Canandaguia, NY, $49.99+tax
Sold 10 cartridges in 2 hours (with no advertising!)

| We made it to EIGHT!!!
Just getting into level 1 of eight is one hairy run, jump, dodge, leap,
bash, slide, hop, skip, duck, and pray adventure!
My son makes so much of this look easy (he's nine). I think the
difference is I try to apply logic and caution when brute strength and
blind faith are needed. The "trial by fire" (as we call it) requires,
in one screen, a blind, flat out "run for the money" with well timed
jumps.
We love this game, we haven't played Tetris for 10 days! (Anybody got a
spare deck I can borrow for a nite? just kidding)
Hang in there......

I polished him off but this has been a joint effort by my family.
My thanks to Darius (my 9 year old son), Melissa (my wife), and

level worlds (8 in particular), Melissa let us play (she does well
in Mario also) and not turn off the deck (she wants to play Tetris
real bad), and Marlea cheered us on (until she fell asleep).
The whole game took about 12 days to finish and the last castle and the
defeat of Bowser are fun (the defeat scene is great!)
On to BATMAN!

To find the flute ... (do you really want to know?)
At the end of world 1-3 there are a bunch of those rectangular walls.
Stand on the white one and hold the down button for a few moments. If you've
done it right, you'll fall through. B-run right, and jump OVER the end bonus
box and you'll find yourself in a hidden room. That's where you'll find the
flute.
There is another flute elsewhere, but that's another story...
Tip is from 11-year-old Danny (Mario-3).

I was wondering what the purpose of falling thru the white block

I made it all the way to the end of world 7 level nine only to die

With the flute........you can either hold on to it, or use it as
soon as you get it. I hold on to it for awhile and collect a few
more items before I use the flute. Blowing the flute brings you
to the WARP ZONE.(somewhat like zelda). There you have a choice
of levels you can warp to. Go to level 4 and use a fire flower.
I think the more items you collect the easier it is to go thru the
game.

136.60 | Save the Flute for a while! | CURIE::BERNIER | | Tue Mar 13 1990 18:45 | 28 |
|
I agree with you, its best to go thru a few levels 1st
that way you can build up you power inventory, which you
will need later on in the game. I tried the flute in world
one just to see how it worked and it will only allow you to
warp to levels 2-3-4-5. I then got killed on purpose so I
could get the flute again and waited until I was on world 2
and used the flute. This allowed me to choose from levels
5-6-7. I died again on purpose and saved the flute until I was in
world 3. I could only select levels 5-6-7 like in world 2.
Also only one person Mario or Luigi can have the flute
at any given time. I tried to get the flute for both but
no luck.
Advice:
I would save the flute until I gathered a good inventory and
was on the 4th world then I would use the flute to advance.
This game is great so far isn't it????

136.63 | The SECOND Flute | TROC01::WALDNER | | Thu Mar 15 1990 19:10 | 30 |
| There is a SECOND flute to be had in world number 1 !!!!
This is ONLY for those over the hill bunch who want to impress the under the
hill crowd.
[SPOILER FOLLOWS] ...
In the mini fortress in the first world you can get BIG at the first "?" and
you can get a tail at the second "?". Making sure that you have a tail and
stomp on the 'Dry Bones' critter, move all the way to the right, but make sure
you don't go thru the door. B-run left and take-off in flight just after you
have run under the used up "?". As soon as you are airborn, head up and right.
Once over the top of the wall you'll find a hidden room with the second flute.
I must warn you that you will probably hit the spinning 'Rotodisc' during your
take-off and then you can choose to try again (Hara-kiri) or finish off the
mini fortress without collecting the flute.
Using the flute, from level 1, will let you choose to warp to levels 2,3 or 4
while using the flute on level 2,3 or 4 will let you warp to level 5,6 or 7.
Again, using the flute on level 5,6 or 7 will let you warp to level 8!
So, with two flutes, and having passed level 1, you should be able to go quickly
to level 8! But as stated in other notes on this topic, you relly will need
those valuable assets collected before you attempt level 8.
Good luck!
Frank

| Hi All,
Found a possible mini spoiler for getting five lifes with the card
trick at the end. mini spoiler follows <ff>.
Also, I'm looking for any and all hints to get thru the pyramid at the
end of world 2. Is there a way to get thru it w/o being racoon Mario?
Finally, I found the big racoon suit (tiki?) in world 6. What does
this do for you vs. the regular raccoon suit....
tom
This trick has worked very well in the levels I've been in. I've been
in level 1 and 2 extensively, and on and off with some of the others.
When you get to the end of the levels, stand on the last pipe, if there
is one, or at the point where a pipe would be. Press B and then run towards
the card in the black ending section. As soon as you see the card, press A to
jump. This should happen right after you reach full speed, about 3 or 4 tones
on the full speed meter. You should be able to jump straight into the card as
you're going up. Using this method, I've managed to get a star card 90% of
the time. As you may know, 3 star cards = 5 lifes.
Warning, if there's a bad guy running around the card, he/she may or
may not create havoc.
This trick is all timing. Play with it for a little bit and I'm sure
you'll get the same results as I.

I agree with the last reply. You can get 3 stars by super runing
(holding the b button and runing) This works about 90% of the time
for the 1st 4 worlds but not as much from world 5 and up.
I think the runing room at the end for these other world tends
to be a little shorter than the others and there for the % is
not as good. It can still be done but not as often.
That coin world in world 7 is great isn't it!
I have made it to the mini fortress in world 8 but can't get
thru it. Its made up of conveyer belts and a ton of doors
to choose from. I been thru a million passages but haven't
made it thru yet. Anyone out there got this far yet?
I could use a spoiler on how to defeat the mini fortress in world 8
What door/path should I be taking????

A spoiler follows the line feed on how to beat the card game where you
match two cards, and you get the items matched. This works thru world
three, and I have not tried it at higher levels.....
Listed below the next form feed, is the exact locaton of the 18 cards,
if you really don't want to see it, get on to the next note.
Card location:
Mushroom Flower 1 Up Flower Star Star
20 Coin Star Mushroom 10 Coin 1 Up Flower
20 Coin Mushroom 10 Coin Mushroom Flower Star
This helps a lot to get what you'd like to have in power up items.

136.68 | video problems on SMBIII ?? | CANYON::LEEDS | Scuba dooba doo | Mon Apr 02 1990 17:27 | 13 |
| Got SMBIII last week... I noticed that when I get to the end of a
section (where you jump to get a card), there's a lot of white "noise"
along the right edge of the TV screen (kinda like a bunch of vertical
lines that jump around). It's not in the way of the play, but it is a
little distracting. Although I haven't tried cleaning any contacts
yet, I doubt that's the problem since this is the only part of the
game it shows up on (and the only game with any video problems). Has
anyone else noticed any similar crud on the screen, or might I have a
flakey cartridge ??

136.69 | Nice Bug | DECEAT::SWEENEY | | Thu Apr 05 1990 12:02 | 21 |
| Well go ahead and read the spoiler for the card game in reply 67 and
ignore it. I just discovered that the dealer cheats. After you clear
the cards, it goes ahead and reshuffles the deck.
Now for the interesting bug. Last night I sat down to play, and
accidently "double clutched" the on button. I sat down and noticed the
intro screen was on, but that the bottom two inches was black. Being the
lazy couch potatoe I am, I decided to play rather than get up and reset.
I went into the game and played for a while, and went to the mushroom
house and got a treat. Then I noticed my menu on the bottom of
the screen was filled up. Somehow the computer had put in a tanooki, a
frog, and a hammer throwing mario. In addition, I had numerous
flowers, leafs, and mushrooms. Also thrown in were the anchor, music
box, cloud, two flutes, and best of all, 10 P wings.
Being the cheating slime I am, I made it into world 2 then warped up to
world 8. I then made it to Bowser without any trouble, but alas could
not beat him. Has anyone else seen this nice bug?

Was this done quickly?
Also seeing you have reached Bowser, How do you get pass the

| Double clutching was not intentional. I pushed the button, slid my
finger, it popped up again, and then pushed the button a second time.
I didn't mean to do this, it all happened in a fraction of a second,
and it happend accidentally. I don't know if I'd be able to get it
again.
Bowser is in the worst of places to get to. To get to him, see the
spoiler
I was only able to get to Bowser with P wings on. However, with
practice, you should be able to get there by jumping. Basiclly the
route you take is:
As you enter, pass the three laser statues. Go up the stairs, and
up on the lift that appears out of nowhere. When the lift stops
go right to the thing that drops as you stand on it. As you're
dropping, push right, and go into the first corridor you see. You
then have to go up a flight of stairs, and down another with three or
four roto-disks trying to mess you up. After going thru that, there's
a room with a bunch of those things that fall when you stand on them
over a large chunk of lava. This is where the P-wings are very useful.
Fly to the top of the room and go right. It's about three or four
screens of scroll up to get there. Bowser is in that room at the top and
to the right of the screen. I'd bet you could get there by jumping
with practice, but I was unable to do so with the lifes I had
remaining.
Best of luck. I was only able to hit Bowser once, and I never figured
out how I managed the one hit.

one more time
Now that you finally met Bowser, you really don't have to demean
yourself by fighting him. Guys like this King Koopa will dig a
hole for themselves if you let them. And thats precisely what you
should let them do.
Every time he jumps toward you,he knocks a few blocks loose from
the floor. Stay out of his away long enough, and he'll end up

Taken from Game Players mag.
I guess the main thing to beating him is to stay away from him
and let him do himself in!

In world 2, after you get past the sand trap level where the sun

You have to have satisfied a certain condition in order for the
white mushroom houses to appear. I think this is mentioned in the
March/April issue of Nintendo Power Mag. I forget when/where/how
this takes place. I think you get P-Wings most of the time and also
you may get an anchor (used to anchor down the ship on the map)
I'll try to remember to bring in the mag this week and enter some
of the conditions on the white mushroom house.
Also did you know that in one of the worlds that has quicksand in it
you are able to go down the quicksand to a new room/world!

understanding is in the first castle in world 1 after you get

you must next jump on top of the bones turtle run to the right
being careful not to go through the door then power run left
and fly up and over where you just were and there will be a
room and the second flute. Well I do all this and find that
the screen doesn't scroll up to where I am and can't see Mario

Quickly go back the same way thru the door on the left.
B-run left to the door.
Go thru the door.
ENDIF
REPEAT
B-Run left until under the 4th column of blocks right of grey blocks.
Jump to break the whole column (last is a "P").
B-Run left, jump up on grey blocks.
Jump on "P".
Collect coins until time expires.
Go thru door.
Go thru door again!
UNTIL (enough lives) or (99 lives) or (time expires)
NOTE:: When you do this loop, you will see a door appear over the

Thanks for the hint, no problems after that. I do have
another question now. While playing the other day I noticed
the pirate ship which appears after entering the castle at the
end of world 1 and you fail to defeat the koopa was present
on the map screen after world 1-5. When I entered the ship
instead of cannons and bullets there were nothing but coins
on every level of the ship. I picked up enough for 2 marios
and instead of a koopa below deck I had to defeat the hammer
throwing brothers. Don't know what I did to cause this but
I've heard of at least one other person that this happened to.
Anyone else experience this and if so how can it be controlled?
It would be nice to pick up 200 coins rather than dodging
cannon balls each time.

| re: quicksand
My son found the quicksand trick last night. Pseudo-spoiler follows:
It's in World 8. You have to beat enough of 8 to get to the map where
all you can see of the map is a partial circle around Mario (this is
after you beat the "tanks", the first ship, the 1-3 lava screens, and
the next ship). About the 2nd area on this limited vision map there is
what looks like normal quicksand to jump over. However, if you go into
the quicksand, you come out under it in a new screen. There are 2
tubes to go into. One of them gets you a mushroom, the other takes you
into a room with about 80+ coins. The only way to get all the coins is
to be able to fly up so you have to be raccoon Mario. In this same
general area, he also found a BIG "?" box with 3 1-up mushrooms in it.

|
136.95 | | MPO::ST_ONGE | | Tue Apr 24 1990 13:12 | 21 |
| A couple of spoilers
In world 8, when you pass the tanks and hit the ships, after you
get by the first ship, just drop into the water and go below the
ship but keep on pressing A and go towards the right. Make sure
you go below the ship otherwise the front of ship will carry you
to the left and you'll get crushed. Swimming gets you by all the
cannons, etc.
In the first area after the 'bridge of fire', the one where it
looks like Mario's under a microscope, get Racoon Mario, build up
speed to fly at the beginning and fly up to a pipe that you can
drop down through. It has a 'giant ?' where you can get three
1-up's, not to mention bypassing the first part of 8-1 which is
pretty tough.
Also I noticed that the 'flip card' game will reshuffle the deck
when you're able to match all the cards up. What I do is match up
the cards to get most of the stuff, leave the coin ones untouched
before going up to 8.

Hi all,
Just rec' my Nintendo Power strategy guide for SBM3
This thing is jammed packed with all kinds of hints, secrets
maps. Its 84 pages of great colorfull graphics.
There are quite a few multiple "1-UPS" hints in this mag.
This is free from Nintendo if you get thier Power Mag.
I can't believe how much info is in this book.
For those who don't get the Power mag, I heard that they will be
selling them for $4.50 at stores like Toys R Us and Child World
soon, (if they aren't already there now)
It tell how many coins must be collected in each world in order
to get the white mushroom houses to appear.
Where to find the different suites for Mario to use.
Just A ton of stuff too numerous to name.
It takes you thru all 8 worlds but stops just before you fight the
last Bowser to win the game.

| I can't explain it, but the following spoiler is something my son showed me
to make the White Coin Boat appear in world 1.
[SPOILER]
In playing 1-1, if you finish with all four of the following, the White Coin
Boat can be made to appear:
1. 5 lives (You'll need to find the 1-up mushroom)
2. 55 coins (no more, no less)
3. A score in even hundreds (i.e. 4500)
4. Take the end card when the timer ends in a 5 (i.e. 145)

| According to the "Official" Nintendo Power Strategy Guide - an
indispensable aid for the feeble-fingered-faithful, your combination
should not have worked!
You can turn a Wandering Hammer Brother into a Treasure Ship in Worlds
1,3,5 and 6 if you satisfy the following conditions:
1. Collect a number of coins that is a multiple of 11 (55 is good)
2. Make the tens digit of your score match the multiple of 11 (this
differs from your score of 5500 - should be xx5x)
3. Stop the timer at end of stage on an even number (like 4, not 5)

Here is how to get the White mushrooms to appear on each of the
worlds. I will try to hide the info behind form feeds so those
of you who do not wish to know can stop reading now.
This is from the Nintendo Power Strategy Guide for SMBIII
White Mushroom Houses
(reprinted w/o permission)
In some stages, if you collect over a certain number of coins
a White Mushroom House will appear on the Map Screen.
I will list the stage and the number of coins that "you must
collect in that particular stage" (you have to collect at least
that amount, you can't add it to the coins you already have)
If you're in an odd-numbered world, there will be a P-Wing
in the House, in even-numbered worlds, an Anchor will be there.
(I'm not sure if you need the exact amount or if you can go over it)
Here we go,
WORLD NUMBER OF COINS TO BE COLLECTED
------- --------------------------------
1-4 44
2-2 30
3-8 44
4-2 22
5-5 28
6-7 78
7-2 46
If you get a chance go to Toys R Us and asked them if the have SBMIII
strategy guide, its about $4.00 but has everything you'll
ever need to know about this game. Those who subcribe to Nintendo
Power Mag get this for nothing.

Hi,
My wife and I finished SMBIII this weekend, actually we defeated
it twice. We did this without the help of the "99" men found in
the 7th world coin room! We had less than 15 men both times we
defeated the King Koopa. We went thru the 1st 3 worlds then warped
to world 5 then world 7 but immediately went on to world 8
(we didn't stop at the coin room) We only went into the worlds
that provided us with special options (such as the 3 "P-WINGS")
It took us 3 hrs the 1st time to win and 2-2 hrs the 2nd.
The final Koopa is a WIMP!
The ending graphics were pretty good.
Bring on SMB 4

RE: 136.134
Thanks Bill, I would definately recommend getting SMB3.
The graphics are great, better than any of the other Nintendo games
and the music is real good. The characters are easy to control
and have a wide range of power and are able to change thier
appearances(sp?) you will not be dissapointed with this game
its set up so different from the other SMB games, its so much
more fun to play. All new power ups, new enimies, matching games
within the game itself, its great fun for the whole family.
I think I will try one of Capcoms new games. All thier games have
have great graphics. I think I will try Adventure in the Magic
Kingdom by them , its about an adventure that takes place in
Disney's Magic Kingdom. They also have a Chipmunk Rescue Ranger
game that has great graphics. Then again Star Tropics by Nintendo
looks pretty good. There's just toooooo many games to choose from.
I hope you get SMB3.....you'll love it.

ANSWER:
Laura, You can get the hammer from various places, and can use it
in various places. One place you can use it is in world 2 after you
come out of the tunnel, go out, turn down, go to the rocks (just after
the rocks, there is a SPADE, select B, find the hammer, Press A,
and the rocks dissappear. There is another place on world 2 as well,
It is mentioned here in this notes file somewhere. At the top of
the screen, just after Screen 4, world 2, just before the pyramid
level.

But, I *still* don't know how to *pick up* the hammer so that I

Let me try to explain it again. When I am at the world map and
I hit "B" I get the pink screen on the bottom, I can see the hammer
there, and usually you would hit "A" to get it like you do to get
mushroom, frog, etc. But when I select the hammer and hit "A",
nothing happens...

136.146 | Lining Up the Faces! | MORO::WHICKER_BI | Scrooge McDuck Had It All! | Thu Jul 05 1990 17:00 | 17 |
| Here's a really basic question for those SMB III experts out there:
Is there a trick to lining up the three 'faces' in the house where
you can earn extra lives? We've tried timing, listening to the musis,
etc. but nothing other than 'dumb luck' seems to work.
We've made it up to world 7 (I think) where the coin room is and we've
re-entered enough times to get mucho lives, but where can we get a
supply of lives to use until we get the flutes to get to world 7?
This is without a doubt the best SMB game yet. My thanks to all of
you who recommedned it. It was worth the bucks, and I think we'll be
playing it for some time to come.
All spoilers are welcome, however!

136.147 | SMB-III Roulette | TROC01::WALDNER | | Fri Jul 06 1990 18:43 | 22 |
| I have had on-again, off-again luck with the extra-lives rolling screen
and I'd just like to tell you how I approached it. Try to imagine the screen
made up of three columns, left, right and middl It's the middle column that
produces the score.
First the top band. I'd push the button when the star hits the left-hand
column. This usually produces a star in the middle column.
Next the middle band. I'd push the button when the star hits the middle
column. Again, I usually get a star in the middle.
The bottom band is the hardest to time, not only because it seems to go the
fastest, but also because I push the button when the star hits the right-hand
column. Not too much time to react and I've been trying to compensate by
targeting the flower in the left-hand column and can get 50% hits that way.
I notice that the speeds of the bands seem to change from one occasion to
the next, suggesting that one method won't work for all occasions, but I've
had quite a bit of success, so I hope you work out something like this that
works for you.

| Bonus end-play is something my son showed me that is not really a spoiler,
but rather a neat strategy. But for those who would rather remain pure, I'll
hide it anyway (then why are you reading this NOTES file???)
[SPOILER]
At the end of some levels, you are bothered by the cloud that drops the
spikies on you. If you take some time to line things up, there could be
quite a few spikies crawling on the ground before you jump up to grab the
card to finish the level.
Notice that on grabbing the card, critters on the screen turn to points. The
first is usually worth 200, the second 400, then 800, etc. If there are enough
of them you might get up to several thousand points and beyond that scores
1-up's instead of points! (like the turtle trick does in SMB-I).

Dean,
As for killing the beast in world three, if you mean the guy inside the
ship, as with the others, you have to jump on his head three times
while avoiding his deadly touch. Fire balls won't work on him (or much
of anyone in SMB III).
I believe that the reason you haven't gotten more responses to you
request for help is that almost everyone is finished with SMB III and
on to their next challenge...once a particular game has been finished
by the majority of 'noters', the interest level falls way off, and
there are only a couple of us left reading the notes file.
I'm through a bunch of the worlds, all except world 8, and am willing
to help as much as I can...also, try reading through this notes file to
see if your questions might have been answered in an earlier note...
Best of luck. SMB III is a great game (though frustrating). Enjoy!

[SPOILER]
If you proceed to the farthest right-most reaches of the castle,

As you enter, note that you come in over two blocks. The right

Get under it by hurdling the crusher and bop both blocks. Jump

and on to the end-game...finished off the Big Guy last night...seems
like we've been on this game forever, but we've finally beaten it, and
now await the next SMB game, Dr. Mario, due out this November...

| Okay, I'll 'fess up...
I just rented SMB III from Endless Video and know nearly nothing
about it (except that I'm probably gonna buy it - it's fun!!!).
As most of your renters know, the instructions included with rentals
are almost nil.....
So here's an elementary question: I've gotten IN to the first mini-
fortress; but how do you get out? Once all the way to the right,
with the raccoon suit and the crunched bones turtle, I run into
a literal blank wall.
Please assist - from the looks of the note, there is a ton of stuff
to be found in this game.....but I won't see it if I can't get past
this "dead end". So, until I find a back issue of Nintendo Power,
or until I get my own SMB III ..........help!

I think it appears as a brown rectangle (at least on my TV set). There
is also another way out. It's probably not a spoiler for too many
people at this stage, but I'll put it after a FF:
If you're Raccoon Mario, after you stomp the Bones-thing move all the
way right, then run fast left until you gan fly (be careful to avoid
the fire). Fly up off the screen, then right. Keep moving right, then
push up, and you'll drop into a secret room.

| Is there any reason for the thing with the key hole on the maps or is
this just to keep you from getting to the end of the stage until you
complete the mini fortress? I rented the game and it comes with very
limited instructions. I don't know if I should be searching for a key
or something? I notice that it dissapears when you get through the

Yes, there is a third whistle. Get the hammer in world 2 and break
the stone at the upper right of world 2.
As for the anchor, there are some levels, such as 1-4 which require
that you pass through getting EVERY coin, coin-box and 1-up. The
coin boxes and 1-ups are not always obvious and if you succeed,
you will find a WHITE MUSHROOM on the world map that will give you
a special tool. In world 1 you get a 'P', I think the second time
you get a WHITE MUSHROOM you get the anchor. I've never seen it,
but my son has.
Check for details in 136.* under the WHITE MUSHROOM discussions.

Yes, the pipe guarded by the jumping pirahna (Did I spell that right??)
flowers is the way out. If you want to figure out how to get in by
yourself, don't read the following spoiler.
***The following spoiler contains
knowledge that may be hazardous
to your concience. Read at your
own risk.
*Spoiler!!!*
Are you sure you want to do this??
Very well.
STEP 1: Get a raccoon tail.
STEP 2: At the bottom of the shaft leading to the pipe, you must get
rid of all the Ice Blocks and the ice-throwing Buster Beetles.
DO NOT get rid of the turtle.
STEP 3: Stomp the turtle once.
STEP 4: Grab the shell and fly up into the shaft until you reach the
top.
STEP 5: Release the turtle shell. It will bounce around in the flower
pit until the flowers are dead and the way has been cleared to
the pipe.
IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, and do something like losing your tail
or killing the turtle, go back to STEP 1.
Hope this helps.

After several weeks of playing Mario III I have finally reached
the end of world eight! It is one surprise after another and alot
of fun except how in the world do you kill the big guy? So far
all he does is look at me after I've jumped on his head a few times
and then blasts me with fire balls! I could never have gotten this
far without the help of all of you out there and once again am asking
for the final spoiler to stop the mario madness going on in my brain!
Once I've beaten the game I can once again turn it over to my five

| Barbara,
I know of several ways to finish the last castle, but then your
game would be over. Is that what you really want?
[IF SO, SPOILER FOLLOWS]
Option 1. If you've got a hammer brother suit, that'll work. But
better try to get through the maze to the very end without getting
hit or it won't be of much use to you. I consider this the more
sophisticated win, best left to the real SMB-III Jedi.
Option 2. This is what most often works and is really the easiest.
Once at the end, dodge the fire balls as the big guy tries to stomp
you. You'll notice the floor crumbles away each time he stomps.
One stomp too many and the big guy falls to his death in the hole
and you win. I consider this the inferior finale.
Have fun.

| My son showed me a phenomenon in SMB-3 last night that I've never
heard of before and I am not sure if this trick has been published.
Certainly the matter seems unique.
In the last castle of the game, there are these statues that zap
lasers at you. Some, however, sit benignly on upper shelves as
some sort of decoration. Using the 'P' wings (and avoiding losing
them early in the castle), my son demonstrated his ability to pass
through solid walls. By first ducking and then flying up in this
ducked posture, he was able to graze over the head of the statue
and into solid wall!! While not especially useful in the end game,
it was something else!
Also, with 'P' wings, when the last chamber is encountered but before
the big guy comes out, you can fly up, up, up and over the top of
the left wall to another chamber with a different big guy. But
if you come back over before facing the left-most showdown, the
real end-guy in the right chamber is unable to shoot fireballs!

| Dear frustrated Robert,
I know the World 8 mini-castle can be a challenge, but exactly
where are you stuck?
I recommend that you follow a general rightward advance where
you'll eventually come the end where one of those blue smashers slides
from right to left on the lower level and you'll be coming in on
the upper left. Drop down and jump over the smasher moving to the
left and you'll find two coin boxes in the ceiling. One will break
and the other is a 'P'. After hitting the 'P' move to the far right
on top of the little shelf where the magic door appears. That'll
take you over to the end-play stomp.
I know the obstacle course to get to the far right can be almost
impossible, but without info on where else you might be getting
killed, there is little else I can offer to help.

136.215 | 99 lives Spoiler | CANYON::LEEDS | Scuba dooba doo | Mon Feb 25 1991 17:18 | 48 |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is the 99 lives trick referred to in .208
SPOILER FOLLOWS...
The 99 life trick is on world 3-4. Get started on the world, but when
you come to the 3 Koopas (green turtle/ducks), DON'T KILL THEM ! Keep
going to the right until you get to where there is a pipe over your
head with a Mario eating plant coming out, and two "para-goobas"
(those things with wings that drop little things that won't let you
jump) appear. You MUST kill both of those to have this trick work (the
"?" box to the right of the pipe is a power-up to help you). Once
you've killed both of these, the tricky part starts.
Go to the right until you go up a ramp and are over a ledge of blocks.
One of those clouds will appear dropping green fuzzies (Spinys). The
cloud will follow you. You must run back to the LEFT, find the
turtle/ducks you didn't kill earlier, jump on one, capture him
(B-button), and carry him back to the right. Get on the platform
directly under the upside down pipe (stand right in the middle or a
spiny might get you, and even then sometimes does), and release the
turtle/duck. He will bounce back and forth between two blocks forever
(until time runs out).
Meanwhile, the cloud is still dropping green fuzzies in the same area.
Each time the turtle/duck hits a fuzzy, he kills it. The first 5-6
"kills" only get you points, after that, each "kill" gets you a 1-up.
Just stand there 'til time runs out. That'll give you about 80 Marios
(or Luigis). Then do it again to get up to 99. Once you hit 99, finish
the level 'cause that's all you can get (or do it about 4 times to
get 99 lives for both Mario and Luigi if in two player mode).
Ny 7 yr old tried it 10-15 times before he got the hang of it, now he
can do it every time (I even did it once).
Good luck !!

The 10's digit of your score should be equal to the 10's digit of the

I've advanced to the final tank now ... after this, the castle.
The good thing about continuing a game is that all the ships
and related steps are considered "beaten". So now I can go
directly to the tank after I lose my last guy.
So close ... victory is near!!

Well, it took me 6 days and who knows how many lives, but I fin-
ally beat it. The final castle was pretty simple, compared to
the rest of World 8.
Spoiler:
I tried jumping on Bowser, but I just seemd to bounce off of him.
So when he jumped and landed, I noticed he knocked some of the
floor away ... and I realized that if I kept avoiding him, he'd
eventually fall right through, and he did. Success!!

Hi Shawn, fancy seeing you here!
Well, I have a SMBIII related question. I bought it a couple days ago
and I'm not doing too well (now at the end of wrold World 3). Never
mind, I'll do it eventually.
Is there any danger to the console or the games themselves by leaving
them switched on for a few days, providing the TV is switched off ?

Yeah, I guess we're both gluttons for punishment. 8^)
The airship and fight with the dragon at the end of World 3 did me
in MANY times about a month ago ... the dragon throws a bunch of
rings that keep "roaming" around the dungeon and being a royal pain.
Recently, I had the game on for 6 days straight before I finished,
and it still seems fine. And I remember someone else saying they
had left it on for a couple weeks to finish a game. The only thing
you'll possibly notice is an extra dollar on your electric bill.

Well, last night I turned the thing off and started again (I figured I
needed some more practice) and was surprised that I went straight through
from world 1 to world 3. I got to the ship on world 3 and stamped on the
little dude twice and he took me out.
As you may have gathered, its on pause as we speak and I can continue in
8 hours 8^).

Well, this morning I got through the second fortress in world 6 and got
to the bad guy. I stamped on him three times TOTALLY by accident! I
was tired and doing really stupid moves and by luck I nabbed him. I
just sat there, mouth open starring at he screen jibbering "I got him,
I got him, how the hell did I do that?"
Now to the ship ...

I had a brainstorm on that level ... I put on a "P-wing" before

tanks and the second two gun ships. The second gunship was a killer - its
damn fast! I'm now officially in 'World 8'.
Questions; How big is the remains of world 8 ? How many fortressess ? Any
'endofgame' surprises instore for me (I read somewhere that you kneed a
P-wing to complete it - all I have is 5 racoon leaves).

Sorry, I was thinking of the fortress at the end of World 7 when
I wrote that.
In the fortress in World 8, the exit door is "hidden". You have
to do something in order for the door to appear. Nothing too out
of the ordinary, though. The door is at the extreme end of the
fortress.

Hi,
There used to be (I'm sure) a reply in this note showing where the
"matches" are when you play the card game. The instructions told you
to pick the 5th card in the first row, then the 2nd card in the 2nd
row. With this info, you could determine which deck the computer was
using and then get all the prizes.
Does anyone have a copy of this that they can post, or at least a
pointer to where I can find it?
Thx,
Bruce S.

The ghosts will not come after you if you look at them ... so you
have to face them, turn and run a bit, turn and face them again,

There is a way of getting to world two quicker what you need to do is
go to world 1 level 3 go into that level and proced until you get to 5
blocks of diferent colours the one in the middle is white with and 3
coins on it and a turtle , right kill the turtle and the press
downwards on the keypad for about 10 seconds you should fall down
behind the sceen but you can still be seen run to the right but
remember to still jump over the green turtle keep going and you go
behind the end screen and then into a little room with a box in it
walk to the box and i believe you press B to open the box?
then when you have the whisle in the B box use it and it will take you
to worlds 2,3,4 if you use it in worlds 2,3,4 it will take you to
worlds 5,6,7 if you use it in world 7 it will take you to worls 8 but
you need a lot of inventory to get anywhere in that world.
there are also two more whisles one more in world 1 in the mini
fortress at the end of the first part berfor you go into the blue room
where the ceiling comes down on to you jump on the bones thing and
but you must have a tail to do this sorry i forgot that part go to the
door and then B run to the left and then fly up where you can't see the
ceiling keep pressing up and right at the same time when you see the
screen move towards the right and stop press the up button
and you enter a room with the whisle in it doing this you do not get
the key that clears the path from start to number 5
Also the 3rd whisle is in world 2 up in the top right hand corner past
number 4 there are some rocks what you need is a hammer from one of the
hammer brothers and stand next to the rock and use in there is a
mushroom house there which you will get frog man suit and another
hammer brother if you kill him you should get the 3rd whisle
i hope this help
