133.0. "Body Power!" by LEWEY::DESELMS () Wed Oct 05 1988 08:56

I saw a commercial on TV for some new accessory called the Body
Pad or something (?). Its a mat you put on the floor and I guess
up to two people run in place on it and jump and stuff. It looks
pretty fun. Has anybody else heard about this or even got this?
The commercial said it only comes in some new action set with the
gun and robot, so I suppose the complete system isn't all that complete
anymore.

I've seen the commercial also. I think the set is called "Power
Set". I thought this seems like a really strange way to play Nintendo,
but maybe it might make it easier for the really children to play.

133.2this is some exerciseAIAG::HUANGWed Oct 05 1988 14:1851
This is how it works. I saw one before.

It's a plastic mat of about 5 feet square with sensors embedded in it.

+-------------------------------+
|            			|    wire to Nintendo
|             S    S            |----------------------------
|				|
|				|
|   S   S     S    S    S   S   |
|				|
|				|
|	      S    S            |
|				|
+-------------------------------+

You start in the center of the mat with your feet on the center 2 S sensors.
You can jump forward - feet onto two front S's
backward - onto back S's
left - left S's
right - right S's
bend - feet on center S's while two hands on front S's
jump - off the S's
bend and jump - to get higher
and many more combinations.

What typically happens is your motion - through sensors - will
be translated into game character's motion.
For instance, I believe there is a Decathlon game in which the
character must run, jump etc. There is also an obstacle race
where the character must go up hill (you need to run really fast),
down hill, jump, move left, move right, going down the stream and
evading stones, low tree branches, etc.

Believe me, this is some excercis. I saw kids running on it and
I am not sure I can do the same.

You will need a strong floor too. :-)

133.3Work out, and have fun doing it!MONET::DESELMSWed Oct 05 1988 16:166
I wonder how sensitive the pad is? Maybe you could just lay it
on a table or something and bang on it with your fists instead of
actually doing the footwork...

Anyway, it sounds like a pretty good idea; maybe Nintendo's
feeling guilty about all us flabby Nintendo players! 8^)

Hi,

I saw one at a local toy store. My daughter thought...great fun!!..
I thought....eee gads, more work!!! I'll stick to the advantage
system!! {8*)

Several months ago, my 6 year old daughter borrowed one of these
things from a neighbor. It was some kind of exercise game.

This thing is a lot of work. I ran a course and when it was done,
I colapsed on the couch. Then my daughter asked me if I would like try
again, this time raising the difficulty from novice to easy....

All I've seen of it, it has come with the entire system, and not
by itself, therefore, it is tremendously expensive...

Has anybody seen it by itself? Where?

133.7FUN EXERCISETUNER::JROBERTSWed Oct 12 1988 13:3514
I've had the chance to play. It was a track game. I,m Not sure
of the name of the game, it came with the entire system. It has
a 110meter run, long-jump, triple-jump, and high hurdles. Up to
six people can play. What a workout.

Never mind the kids, imagine four adults sitting on the couch,
puffing and panting because they just played a video game.

To play you stand on the pad and the faster your feet go up+down
the faster the runner on the screen goes. If you want the runner
to jump(long-jump and Triple jump) just jump. The longer you stay
in the air the more distance you go. Fun Exercise.

So what happens if you just jump all the way off the mat?
New world record in the long jump??????

133.10Where do we get just the game?HPSTEK::RHUFFTue Oct 18 1988 09:1311
So has anybody seen this game cartridge and mat for sale by itself?
You would think that this game would be made available as a separate
unit just like Super Mario Bros. Even though it comes with the whole
system you can still buy it separately. It sounds like fun but
I am not about to buy a whole new system to get this one game. So
if anyone out there knows where to get this game, please reply.

Thank you,

I don't know if there is already a notesfile entry for this question,
but my stepson (who has the Nintendo system) keeps talking about
this "POWER". What exactly is it? How does it affect the games
he already has?

The name of pad is "Power Pad" and
the name of the magazine is "Nintendo Power".

133.14Can you buy just POWER PAD?INFACT::GREENBERGWendy GreenbergMon Nov 28 1988 16:578
I know I am repeating this question, but I haven't seen the answer.

I am of the understanding that the only way to buy the POWER PAD
is to buy the entire NINTENDO system, for about $150.00. Is this
correct? I hope not, this Santa Claus bought the regular system
last year.

at this time Nintendo is only making the Body Power Pad for the
Power sets and is not selling them seperately. Although they have
been hinting that the Pad may be available in the near future as
an option. My bets are you won't see this happen until sometime
in the Spring

In the last Nintendo Power they stated that the Power Pad would
be available for purchase after the Holidays.

I saw the power pad on display at TOY-R-US her in Charlotte the
other evening, and it was being sold separately. I don't know the
price because I wasn't interested enough to look, but you might
want to check the stores in your areas.

133.18What games use power pad?NRADM::BROUILLETWhat's another word for Thesaurus?Tue Dec 27 1988 10:119
My son (age 9) just got Nintendo for Christmas. The kids have
been having a great time, and getting a lot of exercise, with the
power pad. One question.. are there any other games available that
use the power pad, other than the World Class Track Meet that comes
with the set?

Also, while we're at it (although this part of the question probably
doesn't belong in this note) what other games use the pistol (Duck
Hunt came with it).
133.19Anyone have Jeopardy yet?LATOUR::RASPUZZIMichael RaspuzziTue Dec 27 1988 15:3910
Re .18:

I know of 2 other games that use the light gun. They are Hogan's
Alley and Gotcha. Hogan's Alley gets a little boring fast and I
have yet to try Gotcha.

I have been renting cartridges first before purchasing them. The
place I go to charges $5 for 7 days of renting fun.

No Mike, no Jeopardy as of yet. I've been trying for over a month
to find this game. Toys R Us seems to be the only retail store
to stock this item. Every time I go there, thier out of stock.
Can't call because the phones numbers for both Auburn and Framingham
are ALWAYS busy. Maybe I should give Trysoft a shot....

While visiting my parents over the weekend I believe I saw the Power
Pad in the Sears catalog being sold separately. I don't have a copy
of the current catalog myself but someone else may be able to verify
this. I don't recall the price but I do remember thinking it didn't
seem very high.

I saw the Power Pad in a Toys R Us the other night. It comes with
the Track & Field game and sold for $60 or $70. Other available
games that I know of are Dance Aerobics and Team Race (or something
like that - I think it's the obstacle course game someone else described).
