128.1 | WORLD OF DREAMS... | BSS::JSANDERS | Hot patootie bless my soul | Mon Sep 19 1988 11:40 | 14 |
| Just received the July/August issue of NINTENDO POWER and it has
a spectacular 20-page layout on SUPER MARIO BROS. 2. With SMB2 you
will be able to select your characters, pick up items, throw items,
pick-up and throw your enemys, blow up things, ride a magic carpet,
dig in the desert, encouter waterfalls, cause earth quakes and ride
a rocket to distant places. SMB2 has 7 worlds you can explore and at
the end you can confront BIG BOSS - "WART"
Looks like it is going to be GREAT!!!! I can't wait til it hits
the shelves of my fav store. Has anyone seen it out there yet ??

128.2 | Its Out And About!! | PEACHS::CRAWFORD | | Mon Sep 19 1988 14:55 | 19 |
| Its been released. Nintendo released it last week. It should be
making its way to the east coast in one to two weeks, hopefully.
The Toys R Us store here in Kennesaw, Georgia said they don't expect
to see SMB II til next month. If you want to order you can get it
through a company called TRYSOFT. They sell nintendo game packs.
They got a shipment of 1200 SMB II cartridges last saturday and
have already sold them. They told me on the phone a few minutes
ago that they're expecting another shipment in on Wednesday and
they will take orders then, not before. The game is selling for
39.99 plus tax and they'll send it to you UPS for an additional
$5. Delivery usually takes about a week.
If anyone else hears about it popping up on store shelves give a
holler.

I guess a phone number would help. It's 800-877-6274. Don't know
their phone hours. I believe they're on the west coast. Washington
State or California. Give them a try. Happy nintendoing.

| I just got off the phone with TRYSOFT. They are out of SMB II game
packs. They are expecting some more in tomorrow. They won't take
any advance phone orders as they already have a waiting list. They
said to call them tomorrow. They are located in Redmond, Washington
State, across from the Nintendo facility. Their phone hours are
7 - 5 Pacific Savings Time (thats 10 - 8 Eastern Savings Time for
us easterners). There number again is 800-877-6274.
I have yet to get mine so if anyone gets through tomorrow and they
have received their order let us know via a note.

| That's if you live in Mass. Nobody in Vermont seems to know that
the game pack was even released. I went to Sears, Service
Merchandise, Kaybee Toys and Casslers and none of them knew. I
seem to find out more from this file than I do from the stores.
(In fact I just called Kaybee and Casslers again. This week they
know that it's been released, but still nothing to sell.)

p.s. - Now maybe someone can tell me what the availability of
Double Dragon is in Mass. They still haven't seen it

| I called in my order to TRYSOFT late yesterday afternoon and they
had received their shipment so I was able to place my order. I have
checked here in Atlanta with Kaybees, Lionel Play World, Toys R
Us and Sears as to their knowledge that it was available. A couple
hadn't heard at all. Toys R Us and Kaybees say they heard and that
they had their orders in for some time. They claim they have been
told by Nintendo that it will be the October/November time frame
before they"ll get their orders. All things considered I feel that
its worth the extra $5 shipping charge not to mention the fact that
I couldn't even find out how much they will charge for the game
pack when they get it in.
It might be a good idea to locate some of these mail house distributors
who seem to get these games early and post that info here. I'll
keep my eyes and ears open and post whenever I here.

| My SMB2 just came in today from Sears. Didn't believe it till I
picked it up. Cost 44.99 plus .18 shipping plus TAX here of 2.26.
Mail order from out of state saves tax. Penneys is promising delivery
of SMB2 and Zelda II next month, BUT, they are giving the same delivery
date for all items in the Christmas catalog that are not in the
big catalog - so I do not trust the Penneys date. Sears had promised
9/22 shipmentand they shipped 9/23.
Re note 128.9 - I read somewhere (maybe in this Notes file or the
ENET) that NES lost the license to Double Dragon. It will now be
only available from SEGA? Anyway, my son sold his. It was not
even close to the arcade.

| SMB2 is a definite winner! My son rents a game for 2 days and then
is tired of it, but he says this one will last till Christmas.
The NES magazine that had hints is needed. You can jump on top
of the bad guys, pick them up and throw them at other bad guys.
If you can't jump high enough, you can pick up objects, move
them around, stack them and make stairs. Also if you squat till
you start flashing you can jump extra high. Some vegetables are
realy magic doors that let you in on the "back side" of the screen
for a short time to get extras.
By the way, mine said "Rev A" on the front of the box. Does that
mean there is a "Rev -" with bugs?

I too have been able to make it to 3-2, and almost to the end
of 3-3. Believe me, it gets much harder and much better. Mainly
when you have been able to get up to nine lives from bonus rounds
and 1-up mushrooms and then loose them all because timing wasn't
quite right, or you became over come by being's. There will be
a stage that the bombs will have to be timed even more-so. Stick
with it, cause it took me six hours of play on Saturday to make
it to world 3-2. It's taking me a tad longer to get through 3-3,
but I sure wouldn't send this game pak back for the world ! This
is the first game in a while that has kept my interest this long
after playing it for hours on end.

In world 1-3 when you find the potion hold on to it till you reach

OK, Couple of questions for those of us who just got the game.
There is mention of a pattern in playing the slot machine between
worlds. I haven't found one yet, any hints?
In world 3-1 (?) there is a room at the top of the first bluff
on the right after you exit the ladder. (when you first get
into the world) How do you get up to this. I have tried jumping
off the back of the guys with the pitchforks but that just leads
me to an early demise. Again, any hints? (The book says it is
a great place to load up on coins.
Finally (for now), is there a way to continue a world? I have
noticed it gives you only two continues before it brings you
back to world 1-1. This is very discouraging.
I have just gotten this game and agree with most of the others,
It is by far the best Nintendo has put out! (only addition I
would make is to add a password for those of us who only have
a short time to play in one sitting)
hints/spoilers most gratefully welcomed,
Steve

World 3-1 spoiler maybe...
Select Luigi as your player and do a "power" jump. This should
get you up to the room and all its coins.
Another neat thing I noticed in this world was that if you time
it right, you can land on top of "one of those flying things with
pitchforks" and if you move with him, he'll carry you to the end
of this section. It's a quick way to avoid all the other hassles
in this part of the world. It's not easy, but it's neat.

I have also found some warps that would help you. The first
warp is in 1-3. It takes you to world 4. Before you go into the
door that takes you to vertical world, there is a potion. Take that
past the door and drop it near the jar. While you arin "sub-con",go
down that jar. It will take you to world 4.
The second is on 4-2. It is an ice world,so be careful. There
are two potions in the "whale world". The first is right after you
enter, you go to the whale to your left that you can't really see.You
will find your first potion here. The second is,after you go a little
ways, you will see a patch of grass. Your second potion will be
there, but don't throw it there.Takke it to the jar and throw it
there.
The last warp could very well be the most important one, since
it takes you to world 7 (the last world). In 5-3,right after you
go up the first ladder, you do the power jump to get up to the jar.
*IMPORTANT* You must be Luigi to get there. Next to the jar there
will be a potion. Throw it near the jar, and you'll get to 7.
At the end ,Wart will throw bubbles at you . You can,t get them.
You must get the funny looking vegetables into his mouth without
hitting the bubbles.
I hope you can use these tips.

I use the turbo button for the 'A' button on the slowest

Is the area you have having problems with the one you enter through a
large door, double the normal width and height? If so, then all you do
to get through it is stay along the top. After you pass the bombs and
come to the walls, you just pull up a plant/bomb and drop it by the
next wall on the right. Then you back off, wait for the bomb to
explode and destroy the wall, and you go through. If you go down to
the bottom level, you might be trapped, although there is a good
opportunity for a mushroom and coins at the end.
If that's not the area you're having trouble with, please describe it.

The area is right after the end of 6-1 the quicksand world. at
the end of this world you go into a cave that contains many jars
and snakes. In the bottom of one of the jars is a key which unlocks
the door that takes you into 6-2. If you take a warp in world 4
it takes you into 6-1 which is the quicksand world. Then the snake
and jars cave at the end of it you need a key to exit. The exit
brings you into 6-2 which has no exit! Is my cartridge faulty?

| Re .67:
Ah, now I see the confusion. You said "cave", but 6-2 is not a cave.
You can see the stars; you are outside at night.
Here are some hints in increasing order of spoilage:
6-2 can be done.
You have to do something new.
If you can't get there by walking, you'll have to find another way.
If you can't get there on your own, you'll need help.
Take a ride.
If you get off of your ride, you'll have to ride back to the start to
get a new ride to the end.
Complete details:
At the beginning, there is the land you are standing on and some land a
bit lower and to the right. Go to that land and some of the
bird-creatures will come along. Hop on top of one going to the left,
and from there hop up to the highest one going to the left. They will
carry you a bit, and a bird-creature going to the right will appear.
Ride that for a while until you get to more land. Get off, pull the
first plant to get an Erlenmeyer flask. Drop it, go through the door,
pull the coin and the mushroom. When you are back in the real world,
hop on a bird going left.
When you get back to the beginning, you'll need to repeat the sequence
to get on a bird-creature going right. This time, pass the land you
got off at the first time. As soon as you pass the land, jump off the
creature you are on and land on the one below it and to the left, near
the bottom of the screen. (Make sure it is there when you begin the
trip; once it didn't appear for me.) Ride that creature for a while.
You need to do one of two things:
Be prepared to jump over a creature going the other way, land
back on the same bird-creature, stoop quickly to get jumping
power, and jump up to the land that appears.
Be carrying a plant to throw at the bird-creature that
appears. As soon as you land on the lower-left
bird-creature, stoop to get jumping power. When the opposing
creature appears, throw the plant. Jump shortly after that.
From there, you can easily reach the exit door.

| At the top of world 6-x (the vine world) there is a pyramid.
If you haven't got this far, you may not want to read on.
To the right of the pyramid is a cloud. It's way out of reach of
Luigi. If you jump off the pyramid supports to the right you'll
see several clouds leading up to a door. I've been unsuccessful
in finding anyway to reach the door.
I assume that it is impossible to reach from where I am and that it
is supposed to be a oneway exit down to the pyramid from some
short cut (there are many short cuts through out the game.) I've
been unable to find the short cut or any other way to the door.
Does anyone know how to do it or whether it can be done?

Or -
Do I just jump down the waterfall ?

In 3-1 jump down the waterfall but try to stay in the middle of

Pull the 10th from the left and you will find a potion. after this
go thru the door and you will be atop the falls again. Jump cloud

When you exit the door go to your right and pick up the first "plant"
which is really potion. Continue to your left and jump up to the
first cloud (the little one). Power jump up to the second cloud.
After that jump onto the castle. Keep jumping over (don't jump
in between the squared off "points")to the right. Continue onto
the second castle. When you get the to last "point" stand on the
left hand side of the point and face right. Drop the potion (don't
throw it) and enter the door. You should be right at the mushroom.
Just jump up and pick it up. Wait until the scene changes back
- proceed left one "point" the walk in between the "points" and
this will drop you right back down onto the sidewalk.
Hope this isn't too confusing.
Take care...

Want to get a LOT more extra lives in the bonus stage and with a
the regular control pad?
The hints are after the <ff> . Hit return.
The key to getting an extra lives in the bonus round is to get the
cherry in the first window. The trick is to time it so you press the
A button as soon as you hear/see the windows start scrolling. The
cherry is #2 or #3 in the sequence. You know you are close when you
get a star in the first window. I get the cherry 2 out of every 3
chances now as opposed to 1 out of 6 chances before.
Another help is to pick up those coins in the stages you will
eventually be warping out of. Those coins will go with you to the
stage you warp to and eventually, to it's bonus round. I didn't
realize this until last night after 2 weeks of playing.

Also, Sears has a promotion/sale on right now, with the Nintendo
cartridges prominently displayed, including SMB II and Link. My
wife managed to find SMB II at Rich's, a local department store
chain, but her experience was the typical now-you-see-it/now-you-
don't that's been echoed throughout this conference. (In her case,
she observed a stockpile of 20 SMB II's disappear in about that
many minutes in one's and two's.) Sears quoted early-to-mid March
delivery dates for the ones we ordered.
Easy, you say? Not for me. I'm still struggling through 1-3 or so.
I'd like to think I'm getting my $35 worth of entertainment out
of it, however... (BTW, I'm not sure of the price; may have been
$40-$45, but I've noticed generally lower prices up in Concord,
NH than what the rest of you have mentioned).

128.125 | Tips wanted for 3-3 | SALEM::ALIZIO | | Tue Feb 28 1989 08:52 | 20 |
|
Can anyone supply some tips on how to get through level 3-3? That's
the level where you have to climb up several levels over pots
containing shyguys, in order to grab the key. I can usually get
the key and make it through the door that it opens, but then I'm
stuck. If I take one path I end up at the top of a ladder leading
nowhere. The other way, I encounter the two fireball spewing plants
where you have to climb the chains. This seems to be the way you
have to go, but I can't make it without dieing. The furthest I can
get is just past the right hand plant, then I die trying to jump
up on the chain that is hanging down. Since there are six or so
of these chains, is it possible to go to the top of the first one
and leap from chain to chain, without falling on the plants or getting
hit by the fireballs? Any and all tips will be appreciated. I thought
I was in good shape when I got to 3-3 with about 20 lives, but I
managed to squander all of them. Before I try this level again,
I'd like to know the RIGHT way to proceed. Thanks.

Re: .125
Paul,
One of the keys to getting through this area is having (4)
life marks. I generally lose one life mark running to the first
chain at the far left. Then quickly up the chain to escape the
fire balls. I now have 3 life marks left. I'm trying to remember
the exact sequence on the controller I use to jump from chain
to chain. I believe I jump while moving the keypad/joystick to
the right. When I am directly on the center of the chain, I quickly
use the up arrow to get out of the fire balls way. This is continued
until I reach the last chain to the right and continue my quest
upward. Should I happen to get hit along the way with fireballs,
hopefully 3 life marks should be enough for me to get through
this area. I hope this helped.
George
P.S. BTW, I use the Princess in this area/world.

I found if you use Luigi, with the combination of right and

part is the first chain, and that just takes timing....You should
be able to do this without even losing a LIFE MARK.

The princess can make the jump without using the fishes by running
fast and floating over, but you will have to master the fish trick
for one jump up to a high spot, so that you can continue.
Luigi can also make it all the way through 5-1 without having to
master the fish trick. I use Luigi in 5-1. Luigi must run fast
and jump at the last possible moment to make the jump you asked
about.

| Like all other creatures in the game, if you land on their head, they
die. Thus, if you are landing, or on the downward part of a jump, you
can sometimes kill them, instead of the other way 'round.
Spoiler:
The way that I manage to get through them is to super-run across the
screen. Notice that you can change speed simply by taking your finger
off the 'B' button! This allows you to dodge. Then, just keep going.
One further spoiler:
You might find it helpful to be going slow just when you hit the small
bridges near the end of the world. (If you don't know what I mean,
believe me, you'll soon find out. Superjumps tend to take you between
the first two small bridges...)

| This past weekend, I rented SMB2 for my son (honest - for my son!).
After playing with it both Saturday and Sunday morning he became
really frustrated...especially since he flies through all the worlds
in SMB...
He asked me for help - I tried, with no success...the problem?
We simply can't seem to get out of 1-1!!! Everything we try takes
us to the creature spitting eggs...we can approach from the left
climbing up the vines or approach from the right (falling) using
the sub-room with bombs/ladder. It just seems the game is stuck
in an endless loop. We have tried throwing the liquid (for the
doors to the negative world) all over the place...even returning
to the start point, but have had no luck. And since only half of
the instruction booklet came with the game, maybe some clue is
missing...
I wouldn't seem that the game should be this complicated at 1-1
but we just can't seem to find the secret (makes me feel reel stupid).
Any help would be appreciated...

| Well, I've hardly played this game, but you have to beat the
"egg thrower" to end 1-1. To do this....
You have to jump and land on the eggs when he throws them then
hit the same button you use to pick up things to hold the egg.
After you have the egg you have to throw it back at him and hit
him....I believe it takes three hits to finish him.

Spoiler:
The bonus stage is not random, it is periodic. You have to time
it just right, but the clues are there. It can drive you a little
crazy because you get no feedback beyond pass/fail.
My favorite technique is to lightly tap the A button to establish
a periodic rhythm, examine the next slot to check this rhythm visually,
then press the A button in conclusion. Usually I have to fixate
on a very small portion of the slot, as there are quite a few different
images that fly by that can be distracting.
My record for three cherries is three in a row.

| re .152:
I don't know which section you're talking about, but let me give
you some spoilers on how I've handled flowers in general:
Flowers come in three varieties:
Those that shoot straight up.
Those that shoot to the side.
Those that follow you and shoot to the side.
The flowers that shoot straight up are the easiest to handle, either
throw something at them or time them and walk underneath.
The flowers that shoot to the side are a bit more difficult, but
you can usually time them ( all mario characters are periodic! )
and jump right next to them where they can't get you.
The flowers that move are the most difficult, and the best strategy
is to hurl something at them while running towards them.
Of course, you can always elect to take the hit and reclaim a heart
later, but this can backfire if you're around open holes. There
are a couple that I squat jump over.
Generally, I only try to take out a panser if it's occupying a
strategic location. Their timing is pretty reliable but they're
hard to get close to.
Perhaps if you describe the predicament you're in, I can provide
something more specific?
John.

| re .149:
About that @!#%?*@# crab:
Hint:
Rocks bounce and slide. It's harder when you have to jump twice.
Further spoiler:
I stand right in the corner of the platform, making sure to keep
far away from the pit in front. When Clawgrip tosses a rock I make
a judgement call whether I should jump or not. If I jump, I land
on the rock just as it hits the wall and give it a yank. I immediately
run up and hop on to the second step, where clawgrip never hurls
rocks. I then wait until he throws one more and hop two steps so
I'm just below the steel platform. A little running start before
releasing the rock, and the rock slides on the steel platform hitting
clawgrip solidly on his toes. While he's wrapped in pain, I jump
back in position for the next rock. Two potential gotchas here:
1) You missjudge and hit the rock midair. If you make sure you're
always on top of it and next to the wall, you'll never get a rebound.
2) You run into clawgrip while delivering the payload. Specifically,
Clawgrip likes to dance around every once in a while. If you're
low on life points, you might want to be more patient. On the second
step you are safe.
Clawgrip was by far the most terrible monster. 5-1 was by far the
most difficult world ( maybe because I like Toad ).

128.158 | Someone still playing SMBII? | CURIE::SANDLER | _______________ | Tue Jun 27 1989 18:37 | 24 |
|
The SMBII note has been very quiet lately. Is someone out there still
playing it? Previous replies have been helpful, but I guess that by
now I could add to them. My daughter has already managed to defeat
WART a couple of times, and my contribution is in the "bonus section"
since I usually manage to get two cherries, so we may have around 50
lifes to spare when we start a world (sometimes even 75).
Those lots of lifes do come handy when exploring/learning new worlds.
In my opinion some worlds seem very difficult and life consuming, but
not that hard after learning them. Also somewhat out of proportion
are the flying abilities of the princess, which we find a lot easier
to use than the other guys.
Music and graphics are good, but what I don't like is the "slow-down"
mode in which it gets when they cannot cope with something. Also, Wart
is sometimes missing a part near it's face. (Does it also happen to
you?).
If someone wants to discuss more specifics on SMBII (like a sure way of
doing the first part of 5-3, for example), please reply and we will
reactivate this note.

| Reply to .162 <3-2 Help is Here>
I just recently acquired SMBII also. Are we behind the times or
what??!!!!!
In 3-2, there are enough bombs to get you through the walls but
it takes quick timing and perfect placement.
I believe there are 3 bombs on the upper level (before you get to
the solid wall) and 2 bombs on the bottom level.
Here goes: Start on the upper deck and pick up the middle bomb.
Quickly, and I mean QUICKLY, run right and let your character fall
down to the lower deck. Run like HE*L to the left and place the
bomb at the first wall and back-up quickly. Then go up the ladder
and get the bomb on the right and repeat the process running to
the next wall on the lower deck. After that, you should have 2
more walls on the lower deck that you can blow up with the 2 remaining
lower deck bombs.
You have to blow up the first 2 lower deck walls with 2 bombs from
the upper deck. That's the trick.
Let me know how you make out.

When you reach level 1-2 there are two jars where the flying carpet drops you
off. In the first jar is a free life or just a life extension mushroom. Well
the floor to this jar is also the type of wall that will break when bombed and
you can see that there is another room below. I would like to know if anyone
as found a bomb near by that can be used to get to the room below? I have not
found any bombs except in the cave and you can't get out with one let alone
be fast enough.
Also in level 1-3 is seems that you have to do it and kill mouser with only
two life diamonds. Has anyone found more. (this is in the cave or room with
all the chains for climbing)

the negative world at the end, a shroom drops down, but is stopped by
a block before reaching you.
Therefore, the only way to get at it is to remove the block before you
enter the negative world.
You have to think about this before hand, and you have to be able to
jump very high. The only character I've done this with is Luigi, and
I've only done it once. I figured after that, it wasn't worth it, but
it was good to figure it out.
There's a similar problem in level 7.2 very near the end of the game.
I'm convinced there's no solution to it, but if anyone has done
anything there, I'd like to hear about it

Is it possible to jump > onto< the block (from beneath), while in
this negative world???? I'll pass on the information and let her
work & try to figure it out. She has not yet completed the "Ice
Area", (all of it, that is), or #5, #6, but has gotten into #7,
a few times.
Thank You! for the information.

No, not at all. You have to approach the block from above, before you
get into the negative world. When you're then standing on the block,
you should be able to figure out what to do from there. The tricky
part is that there is two holes and a block in each, and the negative
world is just that - a negative image.
I know I got it wrong the first time because I wasn't paying attention.

A friend of mine here at the office rented SMB2 last night. She
is a novice, but she had trouble trying to pass the scene with the
dragon and the eagle. She jumped, moved, jump up the dragon,etc...
But she still couldn't pass level 1. She says that it was the first
time she played SMB2, so maybe its very easy to do that.
I don't have a NES, so I tried to answer her question reading thru
this notesfile, but I didn't find anything about it ( I need to
work, you know).
Thanks in advance,

| Hi Ricardo
I just played SMB2 last night for the first time too. It took me a few
times but I figured out how to get by the first mini-boss in level 1-1.
spoiler after form-feed...
I stood on the left of him and waited for him to shoot an egg. When he
does, jump on the egg and press the "B" button to pick up the egg.
Throw the egg at him. Takes about 3 shots to kill him. Once he's
killed, pick up the crystal and the eagle's mouth opens up to let you
into 1-2.
This game seems great.

Hi Pam,
Thanks a lot for your prompt response. Even though I don't have
a NES, I love to play videogames. I had an Intellivision and a
Colecovision also. So as soon as I have money ( I am making some
investments now) I will buy myself a NES.
Thanks again,

| I've been trying to find a mushroom in Stage 5-1. Right before you
have to jump onto several fishies to get across the falls there are
several plants. I have tried placing the flask everywhere but haven't
found the mushroom yet.
Does anyone know? I couldn't find it in this file.
Thanks, Pam

spoiler for 5.1 mushroom..
I think there are 2 mushrooms, 1 is some where in the middle and
the other one is at the end. For the one at the end you have too
jump up on top where the waterfalls end, there are 2 mushrooms
blocking your fall, go down the first shaft pick up the mushroom
blocking your fall throw it find the flask thow it then go in the
door and the magic mushroom will fall. For the first one you have
to carry the flask with you to the middle of the falls.

If your talking about the little hearts that come up from
nowhere then you don't need a spoiler. It's in the book, the
more fruit you pick up the more hearts you get.

| I saw this mentioned once before but there was no reply that I could
find . In 2-1, at the end, there is a door and when this door is
entered it seems there is no place to go. I can see a cherry in the
ground and there is also a "bug" pacing back and forth. Does this sound
familiar to anyone? How do I get out of here and on to 2-1? HELP!
Does anyone read this anymore?
thank you.

Keep moving to the right!
If you run into a wall, perhaps you could break
a hole in it, enabling you to pass through.
