111.1 | Bases Loaded is a Grand Slam! | WMOIS::M_NAVEDO | | Wed Aug 24 1988 12:54 | 30 |
| I am replying to the last two notes about Jaleco's Bases Loaded.
I am a 13 year old and my mother works here at digital. I recently
subscribed to the Nintendo Fun Club and they informed me that they
were going to stop publication of the Fun Club magazine and start
a new magazine called Nintendo Power. They sent me the first issue
free ($3.50 an issue, bimonthly $21.00 per year) and inside the
magazine they have an article called Baseball Roundup. It talks
about RBI Baseball, MLB, and Bases Loaded. They wrote 7 pages about
these games but I'll try to make it as short as I can. The graphics
shown in this magazine for Bases Loaded are really awesome! On
the title screen you have a choice of "pennant" or "U.S. mode."
Through the game, if the pitching gets bad, you can put in a relief
pitcher. When you do this they show your relief man come out of
the bullpen and drive down the field in a golf cart! On the bottom of
the screen they have the name of the pitcher you chose and his ERA.
You can change the position of your pitcher on the mound for a perfect
pitch. Before you wind up, you can decide on the speed and curve
of the ball. You won't believe the realism! The pitcher's viewpoint
actually changes depending on whether you throw with your right
hand or your left! The batter also has some cool moves. You can
step inside or outside. You can bunt high or low, and you can swing
high, level, or low. When a homerun is hit, the pitcher bends down
on one knee and places his hand on his face in disbelief while the
batter raises his arm while he trots around the bases to receive
a High Five at the plate! This spectacular game even has Bean Ball
Battles! The pitcher throws a wild pitch that hits the batter.
A wild Bean Ball Battle breaks out and the batter is thrown out
of the game! Well, that's it! Hope that'll help you in selecting
this game.

I have the Japanese version of this game(with my FamiCom) and I
would rate it the best among the three baseball games I've seen.
There is no battery backup for my copy. However, everything described
in .1 is pretty much true except that I have yet to see the Bean Ball
Battle. Guess I will try to pitch some at the batter tonight. :-)
The umpire actually called "Fault" and "Strike". There are some
video effects. Besides changing the pitcher, you can also pinch
hit.
It's a much better defensive games - which make it more real.
You don't get that kind of one-sided scores.

| I have to agree.. I compared the other two games, and by far this
is the better one. Have only had a chance to play one Best of Seven
series, but it was enough to convince me that this is one excellent
game. And for someone like myself who doesn't care too much for
Baseball thats saying a lot.. If you get a chance pick this one
up! I called our local Toy's R Us store and they said they had 4
left.. It only took me 15 minutes to get there and by that time
they had sold 3! The clerk said that sales of this game are very
slow, as they usually sell to the first eyes that see it is available.
He couldn't explain why it took so long (20 mins!) to sell 4 Bases
Loaded games.. Geez, Is this what game buying has come down to now?
I mean a serious rat race to be there when they first put them out?
I guess the chip crunch is really hitting home. I don't want to
be anywhere near the Nintendo game area when Link is released. My
life insurance is not all paid up yet!

111.5 | Bases Loaded is a winner | POBOX::BAYLESS | | Wed Sep 07 1988 17:57 | 10 |
| Bases Loaded is a tough game. I have Nintendo and Major League
and it is much better than those. It has realistic voices, and
you can move all the players, if your defensive player is close
to the ball they will dive to make the play. The base runners slide
into each base if the play is close. It took me about six hours
of play to beat the computer and it was a one run game! If you
beat the computer 80 out 132 games it will have a pennant winning
party for you. After each win you get a password, if you lose just
go back to the winning password, so far I have won the last 8 out
of 10 games.

111.6 | Back Field in motion.. | SPUD::GAYF | | Thu Sep 08 1988 14:24 | 15 |
| What I find that makes it tough to beat the computer is that it
is able to position its outfielders much better than I. When I hit
a high pop ball, it seems the computer is always there to catch
it (unless its a home run), but when it my turn to catch a similar
pop ball, I cannot see where my outfielders are until the ball is
so close to the ground that there is no way to get them under it
in time. I have no problems catching the short pops to the baseman
or the shortstops.. just those long pops to the outfield.. Any one
else having this problem? Is there a way you can orientate your
man to get under the ball in time?
Even with this small problem, I find this game very challenging
and especially entertaining.
Frank.

| I have found that if I do not try to move the outfielders before
they appear on the screen that they are in persuit and will most
of the time get to the fly ball without my intervention. (They
seem to move and position themselves for fly balls).
I have tried all the baseball games available for NES and this one
seems to be the most life like.

| Question on Bases Loaded.
I've never been able to take the time to play more than two games
in a row against the computer and was wondering if the computer
ever selects another team.
I would hate to play 132 games against the same team.
I haven't bothered to write down the password yet since I don't
want to keep playing the same two teams all the time. I just reset
and pick another team.

| You must keep the password and enter it each time you play! The
computer rotates the teams that you play but you must play each
team in a 3 or 4 game set (cost to much to fly these teams to your
living room for only 1 game stands!).
I believe based on who you pick to play for that the nintendo already
has a schedule made out for you to play. So keep that password
and eventually you will play out the whole season!
Good Luck

111.17 | Lousy Umpires | BCSE::GRILLO | | Wed Nov 16 1988 15:43 | 12 |
| It's a pretty good game, better than RBI. One big problem I've found
with it. It's real lousy at calling balls and strikes. Some pitches
just about take your head off and they are strikes, and some real good
looking pitches are balls. Unfortunately this forces you into swinging
at just about anything. Anybody else run into this problem?
The rest of the game is fun. I find that pitchers tend to tire after a
few innings and you're not able to control the ball. For instance, you
want to get the ball outside and off the plate but can't after awhile
and you end up getting clubbed. I've had pretty good luck playing
against the computer - split the games, but I use at least 3 pitchers a
game. Anybody else have the same experiences?

| I have all 4 Nintendo baseball games (I love baseball, me and my
friends play all night long...) Bases loaded definately has the
best graphics of any of the games. I however prefer to play RBI
Baseball over bases loaded. (Nintendo Baseball and MLB aren't even
worth playing anymore.!) It's harder to hit in BASES LOADED and
I enjoy pitching more in the RBI baseball game. Also in BASES
LOADED the batter sees from the pitchers perspective. I'd
recommend either of the two games but I personnally prefer
RBI baseball.

####} I USALLY GO THROUGH 4 TO 5 PITCHERS PER GAME. IT SEEMS THE MORE
PITCHES THE PITCHER THROUGHS THE WEAKER AND LESS CONTROL YOU HAVE.

It's no as bad as you think, it all depends on where the ball crosses
the plate. If the shadow of the ball falls on the plate it's a strike. Of
course the strike zone is alot higher then the real baseall strike zone.
As far as pitchers tireing I usualy use at least 3 a game. Sometimes
you don't need real good "stuff" for a pitcher to be effective if you
mix 'em up alot.
has anyone ever had bases loaded no outs and struck out the computer

111.23 | | DENVER::PAUL | | Wed Jan 18 1989 18:27 | 10 |
| I totally agree with -.1 explanation of the strike zone. If you
throw a slow ball to the left or right, what you really throw is
a curve ball. Where the catcher's glove is when the ball is caught
will not be in line with the plate.
My only complaint is that I've hit a ground ball to the outfield
a couple of times and the fielder will keep the ball and allow me
to round the bases! Has anyone else had this problem?

111.24 | Bases Loaded's got problems. too easy! | BCSE::GRILLO | | Wed Jan 18 1989 22:00 | 19 |
| You all must be playing a different game than i am. I select the
Boston Team and pitch two particular pitchers. I throw bean balls,
literally as high and inside as I can. When I don't bean the person
it's a called strike. While you might convince me that the ones that
look inside or outside curved after crossing the plate, (nah, you
couldn't convince me), throwing the ball past the batters ear shouldn't
be a called strike.
By the way, using those two particular pitchers, I have not lost a game
(I won 10 and a row and got bored), all but one were perfect games. 27
strike outs, no balls, all thrown to the inside of a righthander and/or
outside of a lefthander. It's not even close to the plate, but they're
all strikes.
As a result, I don't play it anymore. I'd sell it or give it up, but
my son just loves beating the heck out of the computer. He hasn't lost
yet, he just turned 7.

Yeah, I've seen this several times. In fact, I've seen the second
or third baseman hold the ball and you can run right by them without
being thrown out. They hold it and you round the bases.
It's a bug...

111.26 | Bases Loaded vs RBI | HPSRAD::BMURRAY | | Wed Feb 01 1989 13:33 | 27 |
|
I rented both RBI and Bases Loaded to see which one I liked the
most. I found that Bases Loaded had superior graphics and sound
by far over RBI. The screen with the pitcher, batter and catcher
is very realistic. However, I found RBI to be more enjoyable to
play. Here are a few things I liked about RBI. This is only my
opinion and I only played both for 2-3 hours each.
1) There is a split screen so you can see all bases on one screen
which aids in base stealing. Base stealing was poor in
bases loaded.
2) You could catch foul balls in RBI. I couldn't seem to do that
in Bases Loaded.
3) I thought the base runner response was sluggish in Bases loaded
vs RBI.
4) RBI has real teams with real player name and statistics.
5) The screens in RBI don't seem to flip around to quickly. For
instance you could be tossing the ball around the bases without
the screen flipping to another.
One very annoying thing I found with RBI was the MUSIC that's played
during the game!! It was monotonous.
Just my opinon-

111.28 | Bases Loaded Pros & Cons | CDROM::DUPREZ | | Thu Oct 26 1989 13:28 | 51 |
| Just bought "Bases Loaded" this past weekend, after reading rave
reviews in this conference. I'm pretty happy with it, but all is
not peachy in paradise.
PROS
----
Wonderful graphics - much better than RBI Baseball.
Sound is very good - I especially enjoy hearing "You bum!" from
the crowd when one of the computer's batters strikes out with the
bases loaded.
No "10 run limit" to end the game. It's fine for slow-pitch softball,
but when you paid big bucks for a game, you want to play it. Besides,
you have a RESET button if you're all that frustrated.
CONS
----
Base stealing seems kind of tough. Even when I get a good jump
I'm dead to rights.
Behavior of runners on base is HORRENDOUS. I'm sick of having the
leadoff batter hit a double, then get doubled off second after a
short fly to center because he's three-quarters of the way to third.
I'd like to be able to hold a runner - maybe I just missed something
in the directions? In any case, the default behavior is terrible.
If I was a manager and had someone on my team do that they'd be
permanently benched.
It seems that runners can be out even if they've gotten to the
base. (This is a minor complaint, since it's the same for both
teams.)
One point I disagree on with (I think) .26 is in regards to player
names. I'd rather have fake player names, such as in Bases Loaded.
It doesn't take much to conjure up the image of a real player -
if you follow baseball you've already got a set picture in your
mind of the player's behavior. I get a lot more enjoyment out of
using my imagination to come up with a persona for each player
(and then drilling the player in the head with a fastball if I don't
like his persona).
It appears this note has been dead for a while - if others have
comments regarding what I've said, I'd love to see them.
Regards,
Roland

re: .28
I know what you mean about the base running. What you have to do since
the runners take off at the crack of the bat is send them back to tag
up real fast otherwise they get doubled up. This is the same as in
"Baseball Stars".. I sometimes watch the flight of the ball and forget
to send the runner back before it's too late. Once they hit the next
base you can't send them back. I agree, the runners do appear to get to
the bag before the ball at times and still get called out but this
happens all the time and has to be compensated for.. At least the ump
is consistent.....I have played this game alot in the past but don't
play it much anymore since getting "Baseball Stars"..

Your discussion of sending the runners back to tag up is correct. But
what you don't say is that the directions don't tell you that (a) you
can tag up and (b) how to do so!
I haven't played in a while (I got hung up with ULTIMA this summer!),
but it's the opposite from stealing or advancing. If you use the
arrow-button and the A-button to advance, then its the arrow-button and
the B-button to tag up. Or vice-versa.

And does III have more statistical options than II, which has
