| R.C. Pro-Am is a great racing game. You start out with a slow car
and can work your way up to the fastest car by collecting the letters
in the word Nintendo. You must finish at least 3rd to be able to
continue on to the next track. There are 32 tracks in all I believe.

108.2 | Another Pro-Am | FINALY::COLEPC | The SUNBELT Kid.. | Tue Jun 21 1988 11:04 | 9 |
| R.C. Pro-Am is very exciting. Another racing game is Rad Racer,
but in my opinion Rad Racer can not hold a candle to R.C. Pro-Am.
If there are any other games, I am not familiar with them.
Wait a minute, I think Jaleco made some type of race car game called
City Connection?

I have R.C. Pro-Am, too - it's great. One problem is that many
of my friends have trouble picking up on the game because of the
steering. Is it easier with any of the "super" controllers?
The game is a lot of fun, although the "turbo arrows" aren't
horribly realistic. I do wish I could trash my car and rebuild
it that quickly in real life, though...

There are now a number of racing cartridge available for the NES.
RC PRO-AM, RAD RACER, SUPER SPRINT, OFF ROAD, ROAD BLASTER, and
AL UNSER JR. Are there any other out or do out soon ? I heard
mention of Mario Andreati(<-sp) ? Oh yes, HARD DRIVER !
I need opinions. The family needs a new racing game. We have RC.
We are looking at RAD RACER and AL UNSER.
What do all of you think ?

| There is also RAD RACER II out. I rented RR I and liked it. The
graphics for RR II look even better.
Anyone have an opinion on RAD RACER II vs I?

I like the Michael Andretti Gran Prix game a lot. My friends and I are big
fans of real Formula One racing, and the 16 circuits represented in the
game are fairly faithful to the real-world tracks they represent. For
instance, I spin off regularly at the same hairpin corner in Canada that I
sit at for the real race in June... ;^)
There's a choice of 4 different cars, and the cars have distinct differences.
For instance, the Ferrari is nearly impossible to go 5 laps at Brazil without
stopping for tires. However, the Mugen can be made to go that distance on
one set. I ran 5 laps with the Ferrari and ran a 7'36" with a tire stop.
I ran 5 laps in the Mugen and turned a 7'37" *without* a tire stop.
Tire wear is represented by a bar graph. As the tires wear, cornering
performance declines. There are corners that may be taken at 220 kph on
the first lap that will see a slower speed on each subsequent lap...after 3
laps, the same corner may see a 40 kph reduction in speed.
You may race head-to-head against your friends, or you may pick drivers of
varying skill levels to compete against. Michael Andretti is the quickest,
so it's fun to race him and watch his speed and line through the corners.
Head-to-head racing can be pretty intense...I had a race with a friend
where the margin of victory in a race that lasted 7'44" was three-hundredths
of a second! Neither of us were certain who won until the race data came
onto the screen. Amazing!
Then there's a password-operated Gran Prix mode, where you race against 3
other cars at each of the 16 circuits. You need to qualify at a certain
speed just to make the race, so practice is essential. Between the
qualifying and racing, an event takes perhaps 15 to 20 minutes, so the
password function is essential to resuming the game at a later date.
A great game for any race fan...

I like Rad Racer I a lot. Rad Racer II is *horrible*! Save your money...or
buy Michael Andretti's Gran Prix.

Yesterday I bought this game for my NES. It was only $15 so I was a bit
spectical, but evidently this store was trying to get rid of their 8 bit NES
games.
Overall the game's not too bad. You can run practice laps on any of the 16
Grand Prix tracks, choose between an automatic or manual (3 speed) gearbox, but
the 'game' is to do the entire 16 race curcuit. You get 1 qualifying lap and if
you make the field you have a 5 lap race. The minimum position in the race you
have to maintain keeps getting higher as you get further into each race. If you
drop below that position, you drop out.
If you spin or drive onto the grass your tires wear and the handling gets worse.
You can pit to change them and then the handling really improves. The race
tracks themselves aren't too bad, for 15 bucks.... You can pretty much maintain
full throttle in 3rd gear (325kph) all around the Monaco track....:-)
I've mainly been using the automatic gearbox so far, but I noticed the manual
one give you an extra 10kph on the top end (325 vs 335).
I haven't done a complete 'season' yet, but last night I finished 4th in the
first two races and then proceeded to be 'terminated' in two, DNQ in 2 and then
crashed out of the 7th....

108.9 | bug in Ferrari game | OASS::STDBKR::burden_d | Keep Cool with Coolidge | Mon Apr 11 1994 11:38 | 11 |
| I've run across a bug in the Ferrari game. Once in awhile, during a race,
all the other cars disappear! It's happened twice so far and I haven't
figured out a sequence of events that causes it. I'll start off in 20th or
so grid position and will pass 3-4 cars and then nothing - no cars. Normally
having no cars in front of you is good, but your race position stays the same
and as the race progresses the minimum race position decreases so after 2
laps or so, I end up out of the race.
Is it worth writing the developers of the game to complain??

108.10 | Andretti's World GP | OASS::HEARSE::Burden_d | Keep Cool with Coolidge | Mon May 16 1994 11:00 | 17 |
| We bought Michael Andretti's World GP over the weekend (another $15 special!)
and have to agree with Mike in .7 - it really is a good game. I've only had a
few days to play with it so far so I've been practicing the courses. Much
more realistic than the Ferrari game I have.
The biggest difference between the two, as far controls is concerned, is the
steering. On the Ferrari game, you press the left or right button and the car
keeps turning more. On the MA game, you have to press the button numerous
times to turn sharper. It's just that I had gotten used to the Ferrari game
and have to adjust to the new game.
I also tried out 'left foot braking' on the new game. It works, sort of. If
you apply the brake with the gas on, you will simply maintain your speed. I
doubt it actually effects the pitch or grip of the car, but it does make it
difficult to steer! :-)
