88.0. "RAD RACER" by ZEKE::LALIBERTE (Terrapin Bound) Tue Apr 05 1988 13:13

    Just picked up RAD RACER, the 3-D option leaves alot to be desired
    but the game itself is okay.. on a scale of 1 to 10, (1 being the
    highest), I would give it a 4...

    FYI-- The instructions don't tell you that if you want to restart
    on the last course you were on, hold the A button down while you
    are pushing the start button. Otherwise you start all over...

88.1What is 3-D?USAT03::GRESHDon Gresh @RHQ DTN:351-2943Tue Apr 05 1988 14:015
    re .0 ...the 3-D option leaves alot to be desired...

    Could you explain the "3-D option". What is it? Do you have to
    wear green & red glasses?

88.2Are Glasses Required?SAHQ::SCHULTZTue Apr 05 1988 17:0112
    re: 1 ...Do you have to wear green & red glasses?

    The answer is Yes. However, if you are purchasing the game for
    the 3-D effects, you will be baddly disappointed. I have yet to
    see any 3-D effect from the game. All that happens is that the
    screen becomes gittery with multiple images of the car and road.

    The good news is that the game in non 3-D mode is very good. In
    fact, if you enjoyed Sega's Out-Run in the arcade, you will greatly
    enjoy Rad Racer.

    When you say "non 3-D mode", do you mean simply that you don't wear
    the glasses, or is there a selection that you make that impacts
    the projected image?

    the default is non-3D mode. My kids love the game cause they can
    beat me by many many miles ( I'm still in the first level while
    my kids are way ahead of me ). Fortunately, in real life, I don't
    drive as bad as I was at the game.

    To get to what ever level in the game you want, all you do is:

    Did you ever notice that after you select a car that on the demo
    screen, if you push the "B" button you can make the RPM reading
    change?? Well, you do that (1 thru 8 pushed for screens 1 thru
    8) and then push up (^) and right (>) at the same time while pushing
    the "A" button.

    So you push ^ and > at the same time and then the "A" button.

      Im on the last level.Ive almost conquered it ,but havent as of
    yet.The instructions refer about a technique one can use that'll
    flip the car and still be able to drive it without eatin' it.
    Could any Rad Racer give me some advice?

    Here is a code that will let you see what happens at the end.

    When the demo screen is shown press the B button more than 60 times and
    then hit up and right at the same time and you can see the ending of
    the game.
88.11More of a slide than a flip...WFOV11::DOBOSZ_MMon Dec 28 1992 00:0628

I think the instructions are misleading...the cars don't "flip" (unless, of
course, you're crashing big-time). Here's what I think they mean:

If you run squarely into the back of a car, you slow down (except if you're
going _real_ fast, in which case you crash). However, if you run into a
rear _corner_ of a car, you deflect off _in the opposite direction_.
That is, if you run into the _right_ rear corner of a car, you'll deflect
off to the _left_. So rather than a "flip", it's more of a "slide".

Here's a typical scenario where this is useful: You're in a long
left-handed corner...you're struggling to keep the car from skidding off
the outside of the corner to the right. There's a slower car blocking
your lane, and you're going too fast to veer to the left. If you can
_precisely_ hit the car on the right rear corner, you'll suddenly veer a
couple lanes to the left, while hardly losing any speed. You can then
easily accelerate past the blocking car.

I've been able to use this trick, but it's difficult at best. It's great
when it works, but I'd estimate I use it successfully in 1 of 3 attempts.
It will blow your friend's minds, though...they'll be convinced you're just
lucky.
