| getting to the RED key and knowing where it is are two different things.
Assuming you know where it is .... you need the "feather of free fall"
or the blue potion to get the speed you need to make the "necessary"
jump.
Now my question, once I get to a certain ledge when scaling the
castle wall I can't go any further, no matter what I try I can't
seem to get beyond that point, there is a ledge to jump on but I
just can't reach it....any hints ??
P.S. I finally figured out what the horn is for...very handy item...

On the Castle you have to fall to a certain place. It's a

Yes the red key. I did manage to get it last night.
spoiler::
I caught a ride on a bubble, jumped about 1/2 to 1/4 inch before
getting to the ceiling, kept the jump button down and when I
hit the opposite bank the character jumped again bringing me
to the key.
The play from that point through the castle, but not through
the "changeling" door, was easy. I haven't made it past that
door.

By the way, does anyone besides me find the sound effects

turn down the sound on the TV and listen to the stereo while

Just picked up the game yesterday and while enjoy jumping around
from tree to tree, it occured to me that there has to be more to
this game then that.. Found the entrance (and the key) into one
of the trees.. Now from reading the note thread on this topic, I
see where one must get to the top of the trees in order to continue.
My question is simple: Do I get to the top of the trees from the
first screen or from within the tree (jumping up from limb to limb?)
Thanks

you're right in being able to jump from tree to tree, but
the object is to collect gems and unlock the chests that
are around with the matching colored key.
The more gems you have, the better. They will be needed
to bribe enemies. (This is in the instruction booklet).
You can go inside the trees and find more gems, and as
you climb onto limbs you will find other assorted treasures.

Don't worry about getting those chest on top of the trees
as of yet. If you've obtained all three keys, then try to
go inside the trees and get even more gems. To get to the
top of the trees is a definite tricky situation and one that
I cannot help you on. I've always been more concerned with
getting the treasures than going up there...

If I remember correctly...spoiler follows:
You can get the Boots of Force on the first screen by opening
a chest located towards the top of one of the trees and you
can also get the Dagger of Throwing on the first screen by
jumping around the soldier (guarding the entrance to the next
screen) and down one branch ....
>>how DO I get to the tops of the trees?
If I remember correctly, you MAY be able to get up that high
if you can get the (pink) potion which enables you to jump
extra high.
Hope this helps!

Yes, you CAN make it to the treetops! Once you're at the chest
which contains the Boots of Force, just stay there and slay any
enemies who get close. Eventually, one of these will be replaced

| re: .39
Major spoiler on lava world:
OK - you're riding your bubble up and you get it all the way to the
top, right? (Manfully killing those dumb sparks on the way, right?)
The mistake I always made was that I rode the bubble too far up. But
after I learned to jump a little earlier, I didn't have any trouble.
This is made very difficult by the fact that it's a blind jump - you
really can't see your target at the time you have to go!
The trick is that you can bounce on the slope leading up to that
platform off to the right. You need to jump off your bubble just as
the bubble starts to clear the cliff edge, and then immediately jump
again to avoid falling off the slope. You need to aim at getting 3/4's
of the way up the slope or so.
The following (very rough and probably misremembered in many details)
map might give you an idea. Jump when you reach X, aiming at Y. As
soon as you hit Y, jump again. You'll pick up the money, and find the
key very shortly thereafter.

DON'T make the mistake of using a turbo joystick or button when

| It is helpful to get the Feather as soon as possible, and it can
be found 'way back in the iceworld (World 2). Near the start, there
is a passage that goes up and right (near a recurring red flask).
It's impossible to climb, even with the levitation potion - but
it can be overcome in this manner:
Go about two levels below, to where you find a recurring BLUE
flask. Jump to the right of the flask, and pick it up moving left.
You will, of course, turn blue (move faster). Head IMMEDIATELY
for that unclimbable ledge, and you will top it just as the flask
wears off. At the top of the ledge you'll find a chest - with the
fabulous Feather inside!
Once you have the Feather, finding the red key in the Lava World

| I cruised through the castle last nite. It took 45 minutes to slay
those #!@#$%@^# skeletons & I thought I was finished... Now I'm
stuck in a circular room with the wizard & a pink (or is it blue
or red?) door with no key!
I assume I have to kill the wizard but he keeps bolting all over
the place. His energy is at maximum strength (both red bars are
enabled) & my wand of wonder & staff of power seem to have no effect
when I manage to hit him.
Any hints?!? I'm ready to go back to Metroid & Zelda! So many
games, so little time!

87.52 | Can I keep more weapons?? | TYFYS::MOLLER | Halloween the 13th on Elm Street #7 | Thu Feb 23 1989 22:35 | 8 |
| I notice that whenever I have the boots of force, and open the red
chest containing the horn that the boots are taken away. And when I
open the chest with the staff of power, the horn is taken away. Is
there any way to keep more than the axe and one other weapon? It would
be useful -

No way to keep the boots, the staff, etc. at the same time. At
least no way that I've found. (I've gone through it several times
now. Just to make sure that the first time wasn't just a fluke.

| I still am having trouble getting rid of those skeletons that greet
you once inside the castle - you know pipsqueak, his brother, his
bigger brother, his BIGGER brother. That forth one ALWAYS has
gotten me - so far. I have the N.E.S. Max - are there any clues
you could give a poor soul like me on how to get rid of these
@#$*@skeletons??
I appreaciate any help, clues, spoilers, tricks - whatever it takes
to get past these guys. I'm ready to toss this game -
Thanks

Skeleton spoilers:
I certainly hope you have the axe. If not, maybe you'd best start
again and find it.
I beat the skeletons by playing leapfrog with them. Jump over them a
lot. Then turn and shoot. (But remember the adage about the wise man
and the unicorn. Sometimes you miss!)
You can find the axe in the lava world, and perhaps other places as
well.

I plyed last night for the first time and I finished the game in
about 3 hours of play. I thought this game was relatively easy until
the castle. Spoiler's on the wiz and the growing skeleton follow
Skeleton. Just like .55 said. You have to keep jumping and throwing
the axe. I levitated, threw the axe and then jumped from my levitated
height. This way I very rarely accidently hit him
The wiz (spoiler)
In the lower left hand corner of the circular room there is
a flat spot with a single little ledge above it. I levitated one step
to the left of the ledge and kept throwing my axe to the right. The wiz
kept appearing on the ledge and on the flat spot below. Everytime he
appeared on the ledge I got in one or two hits and the axe kept getting
the things he throws. I was a little disappointed in the ending,

I video taped the four times I've been through the game so far
and found this very useful in trying new avenues. You can not leave
any area unexplored.....The horn works great if you want to find
all the hidden caves with the diamonds....all you need to do is
use the select button in the cavern after the lava.In order to enter
the castle you have to gather the diamonds in the room at the top
of the castle .The key to open the door can be found on top
of the castle (left)....jump off the center and float down to the
castle (left) roof....it's there...then you have to make your way
back up to the top of the castle.
I use a Radio Shack video control center to intergrate the
game to my monitor/tv.It works great...better than the 300/75 ohm
method...........The control center runs about 79 bucks and can
also control your VCR's/dubbing,Nintendo taping...

This game drove me crazy for months as I did not under stand the
concept at all. Then, after watching my son fool with it , I finally
grasped it. The main thing to do is have patience. Search every
area, try mapping it out, for jewels. The amount of jewels usually
corresdondes with your progress.
spoilers???
1: Good luck in the second lava room. The red key is a must. I just
lucked out getting on the left bank (rieve gauche?). Perservere!!!!!
2: I killed the Wizard by using the CLOAK OF DARKNESS and standing
on the flat area to the left of the 3 donuts, for lack of a better
discription. We have the NES advantage and I used the Turbo for
the A button. The Wizard stays in one place, more or less, and
you are able to off him rather easily. You will have to select the
Cloak a number of times to accomplish this though.
I do agree with those that say the ending is rather disapointing
though game will always have a special place in my heart as it is
the first I have ever finished.

87.60 | Does anyone play anymore??? | MPGS::GIFFORD | When nature calls you have to answer | Thu May 24 1990 10:35 | 26 |
| I see that noone has had anything to say about this game for quite a
while so either nobody plays or everyone has completed it.
My nephew let me borrow this game a couple of weeks ago, without an
instruction book so I'm kind of pokin' around on my own. I have a
couple of questions.
1. One of the first times I played, in the first stage (forest) or
second (underworld/iceworld) I found some sort of "magic" which would
shoot a "freeze" ray. I only found it once and have never been able to
find it since. I can get the boots, shield, throwing knife and
levitation, but can't seem to find the magic any more. Has anyone else
found this??
2. I also read in here that you have to "select" objects to use them.
How do you do this. When I hit the select button nothing happens. Is
there some combination I need to know about to get to the select screen
or is there even a select screen to get to??
re the magic I found that when I had it I could kill the large bat
easier. In fact I have only been able to defeat him once without it.
Thanks for any help you can give.
