<<< PICA::XIII$:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GAMES.NOTE;1 >>> -< GAMES|SEMAG >- ================================================================================ Note 620.0 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 19 replies CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE 36 lines 30-JUL-1987 08:59 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Captain Commando Challenge Series: GHOSTS 'N GOBLINS _____________________________________________________ Brief description...(from the box)... |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| |"The beautiful princess is kidnaped. Her lover the Knight in shining armor, | |armed with five different weapons to fight the enemy, sets out to rescue | |the beautiful princess. | | | |The Knight, aided by your skill, must pass thru seven different guarded | |gates, fighting and destroying demons, dragons, giants, and zombies. there | |are hidden characters too! Some friends, some foes. | | | |Ghosts 'N Goblins is exciting...challenging you and the Knight to rescue | |the princess, amid great danger, escaping Hades, land of the enemies." | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| ....sound like a kids game? Maybe. But it's not. It's extremely challenging and demanding. And I'm definitely hooked on it. I've put in my hours and haven't reached the third of seven gates. Since others have been mentioning this game, it seemed like time to start a note on it, or better yet, can we move all Nintendo related stuff to it's own notesfile? (Just a thought). Allow me to start... After tortuous hours, I've gotten through the second gate. I'm halfway through the third passage, when I get to those red devils I'm sunk. I'll get passed the first one and get killed by the second. Once or twice I've made it through them but take a wrong turn and don't get far. So, could someone give some hints to consistently get passed the red guys? thanks. ================================================================================ Note 620.1 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 1 of 19 BEING::POSTPISCHIL "Always mount a scratch monkey." 14 lines 30-JUL-1987 11:09 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re .0: I have not found any sure way to kill the red devils. Practice leads to a good deal of improvement. Try not to get trapped. Try to get in two good hits before they even move -- then you only need two more. On level ground, jump and fire in the air, so you can hit them while they are far away. Sometimes you can get away by running and/or jumping _quickly_ away from them -- if they go far enough off the screen, they are gone forever. -- edp ================================================================================ Note 620.2 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 2 of 19 CURIE::DECARTERET 6 lines 30-JUL-1987 12:13 -< hello\ >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friends? I know of the foes but I didn't meet any friends. And there are FIVE weapons?? All I ever got is the dreaded fire(is there any use for that)?, the long swordtipe thingie, and the dagger. I like the dagger the best, and I also made it up to 2.5(two and a half). -=*>Jason<*=- ================================================================================ Note 620.3 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 3 of 19 STAR::BOUCHARD "I have nothing to say" 14 lines 30-JUL-1987 17:10 -< Demon Mashing >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "How to kill Red Demons in two easy lessons..." Hint follows... You don't have to kill them. Spoiler follows... To "kill" a red demon, move just far enough to the right that the edge of the demon is just barely on the screen. Shoot once. The moment your shot hits the demon, run left. The demon scrolls off the screen. Now move right; the demon is gone! ================================================================================ Note 620.4 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 4 of 19 CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE 8 lines 10-AUG-1987 16:41 -< When should I give up? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've decided to hold off asking for more hints right now and continue to battle it out for a while. This is no game to be beaten in a few sittings. I've yet to see the third gate, can this game get more difficult as it continues? I'm anxious to move on to "Zelda" when I get done with this one, but I don't see any end in site. How long did it take most of you to get to the end? ================================================================================ Note 620.5 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 5 of 19 ELWOOD::WHERRY "Cyber Punk" 19 lines 10-AUG-1987 17:00 -< You want to do other things too?? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Over the last year at my current educational asylum, a friend of mine purchased a nintendo game system. He also purchased Ghosts N Goblins. The game became quite addicting to the point that people were using a VCR to save sessions to see if they could learn new tricks. As to time, I do believe that 100-120 hours (ie: five days non-continuous play was required). People were playing in the spare moments in between class and yes I do believe that some classes were blown off in order to continue playing...(smile, Rich, Dave, would you care to comment here??)... So, lets say that in order to finish the game, you will need to utilize the continue current game selection after you die. I think the farthest anyone got on one man was spoiler first go round level 5 ================================================================================ Note 620.6 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 6 of 19 OFFRT9::BDIMBAT "Echos in the Night" 13 lines 10-AUG-1987 22:25 -< Some are slower then others. >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WE spent close to two months of fairly continuous play on it. Board two proved to be the hardest, almost a month by itself, though that could have been because we got smarter and had better dexterity in the later boards. When the game would get accidently reset it would only take us a few hours to get back to our position. Board three is a dilly also. If it were me, I would get Zelda also. You can always save the cartridge, with your current position on it. Though we let GnG stay powered on for a week at a time so as not to lose our place. Bill ================================================================================ Note 620.7 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 7 of 19 CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE 11 lines 11-AUG-1987 11:58 -< Ribbit >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I thought I'd step back to the first level for a moment. Has anyone else encounted some wizard that turns you into a frog? I had played many times before this happened to me. It's happened only once since then. I have no idea what I might have done to make him appear. It was interesting to be a frog, but I got run over by zombies very quickly and didn't get a chance to enjoy this. Is there a way to force this guy to appear? Just wondering......... ================================================================================ Note 620.8 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 8 of 19 RUBY::CORBETT "Mike Corbett" 28 lines 12-AUG-1987 14:50 -< Ohh yea....the wizzard >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- < Note 620.7 by CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE > -< Ribbit >- > I thought I'd step back to the first level for a moment. > > Has anyone else encounted some wizard that turns you into a frog? > I had played many times before this happened to me. I have no idea what I might have done to make > him appear. > It was interesting to be a frog, but I got run over by zombies very > quickly and didn't get a chance to enjoy this. Is there a way to > force this guy to appear? Just wondering......... I havn't played the Nintendo version of GnG but if it is faithfull to its brother in the arcades then you can get the Wizard to come out by <Spoiler> shooting at gravestones. If you shoot long enough the Wizzard will come out and attempt to turn you into a frog by (I think) shooting something at you. If you kill him (which isn't that tough) you get some points. I don't remember if it was every gravesstone or not but I know he is in one of the ones on the top of the bank. MC ================================================================================ Note 620.9 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 9 of 19 CYBORG::MORRELL 6 lines 13-AUG-1987 13:14 -< oh yeah well my dad is better then yers... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know what you people see in this game? You should buy CASTLEVANIA it makes ghosts and goblins look like atari space invaders!!! CASTLEVANIA is by konami.much,much better game.much, much better graphic's too. ================================================================================ Note 620.10 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 10 of 19 CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE 22 lines 14-AUG-1987 11:15 -< Still trudging through... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had a mild breakthrough last nite. After days and days in the third section, I finally made it through past the snake. Whew! It was hard to stop after that. I made it through the next section in record time, killing the second dragon. This next section I lost my sword and picked up an axe by mistake. Question: is it recommended to hold on to the sword and avoid all other weapons? I haven't seen the cross yet and assume that will be necessary later in the game. I'm now anxious to finish this game and get on to what seems to be far superior games, Castlevania and Zelda. Here's something interesting I found in a previous level.... (spoiler follows?) In the second half of the second section. Get to the top floor. Walk to the left until you get to the wall. When you are there, jump. Invariably a suit of armour falls from the sky. This sometimes comes in handy. Anyone else notice things like this? ================================================================================ Note 620.11 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 11 of 19 BEING::POSTPISCHIL "Always mount a scratch monkey." 7 lines 14-AUG-1987 14:50 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re .10: I recommend keeping the short sword. The cross appears in the section after the fifth gate, but I have not seen any use for it. -- edp ================================================================================ Note 620.12 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 12 of 19 CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE2 7 lines 24-AUG-1987 11:53 -< Spoilers Welcome >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, Fifth gate, ....SATAN.... Do I keep fighting away at him or are they more tricks to be learned? Please hurray, ZELDA is waiting! mark ================================================================================ Note 620.13 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 13 of 19 CURIE::DECARTERET "Jason DeCarteret" 4 lines 24-AUG-1987 17:32 -< ????????????????? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does anybody think it is hard to get past the 3rd gate?? I think it is incredibly long. 2/3 of level 2 you have to go through to finish it. -=*>Jason<*=- ================================================================================ Note 620.14 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 14 of 19 BEING::POSTPISCHIL "Always mount a scratch monkey." 13 lines 25-AUG-1987 12:41 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re .12: That's the big, flying red guy, right? No, no tricks, just keep plugging away. Stay away from him, and jump and fire from a distance. Re .13: I think the third gate took me longer to get through than most of the others, but after you have done it a few times, it becomes easier. -- edp ================================================================================ Note 620.15 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 15 of 19 CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE 5 lines 25-AUG-1987 12:54 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- re .13: Do you get to the gate, or is it a problem to get there? I agree that it is the toughest gate at that point, but once you've done it a few times, it becomes easier. ================================================================================ Note 620.16 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 16 of 19 CURIE::DECARTERET "Jason DeCarteret" 0 lines 26-AUG-1987 13:57 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================================ Note 620.17 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 17 of 19 CURIE::DECARTERET "Jason DeCarteret" 6 lines 21-SEP-1987 22:30 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- reply .7 I figured out how to make the witch appear that turns you into a frog. Just keep waiting before the first slanted gravestone in level 1. It takes a little while but it eventually happens. -=*>Jason<*=- ================================================================================ Note 620.18 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 18 of 19 PROSE::FLAHERTY 50 lines 10-OCT-1987 11:47 -< Secrets ? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- spoilers follow ... Cross uses ? If you get to the last level in GnG, and you do not have the Crosses, and you kill the Satan Brothers (two satans) then you will end up at the beginning of the Castles. So, Crosses are necessary !!!!!!!!! Secret Treasures ... When you are on the first level, you encounter a ladder. Climb the ladder so that you are on the top part of the screen. Kill the Green Monster (plant), stand where he was jump on the gravestone to the left... then jump off to the left. Grab the Statue.. 10,000pts. Don't get all of the glowing statues you encounter... some cause you to turn in to a frog. Thats all for now, I don't want to give all of my secrets away. Pat.. ================================================================================ Note 620.19 Ghosts 'N Goblins - Nintendo 19 of 19 CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE 6 lines 15-OCT-1987 15:23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How about just a few more secrets? That last one is great in helping reach 50,000 points for another man. How do you find things like that? Jump off of everything? Thanks for the help.

Okay, who has finished the game? I am stuck in the sixth area, the one that begins with a row of skulls, then up to an unicorn, then a dragon, and then up to a bunch of big men, devils, and skeletons. I always get killed in that group. Is there a good way to defeat them? Is the cross really necessary? The game seems hopeless after picking up the cross; it is slow, it does not travel all the way across the screen, and it does not seem to injure some monsters. What good is it, and how can you survive with it? -- edp

You need the cross to kill the devil. Which is above six. Grin and bear it, Pat..

Re .2: Did you finish the sixth area using the cross? Or do you finish the sixth area and go back and get the cross? (Is that possible?) I cannot even get through with the sword, let alone the lance, so it must be impossible with the cross. Do you just fight your way through, or are there some tricks? -- edp

Did you finish the sixth area using the cross? Yes, but it was pretty tough. As for going back and getting it, I seriously doubt there is enough time. Tricks ? None that I know of. that cross is so s-l-o-w... Pat..

edp- The big trick is to go up to the top of 6, kill the devils, then go back for the cross. You must work quickly, or else you will not have time. If you get back to the cross without enough time, *don't pick up the cross*, you'll be stuck with it for a while. As mentioned in the GmG note in games, I was one of the "multi-day" players that finally got through the whole thing. There are a few tricks (finding a 'safe' spot fighting the dragon), and even ways to run past the dragon, that take experimentation to perfect. BTW - the Devils are only injured when their wings are open, and try to trigger only one at a time.... Good Luck! Dave

Re .5: Going back makes sense; I'll give that a try. It still seems like a pain (I've been able to get past the dragon fairly regularly, but the rest of monsters seemed overwhelming), but at least it sounds like it might be possible. Thanks. -- edp

O.K. O.K. Just picked up GnG late last night. The wife and I started playing and it seems to be a lot of fun. Frustrating!!, but fun! We just wanted to get a feel for the game. 2 hours later we've gotten nowhere and we are looking for a little help that will allow us to get some sleep. Any spoilers are welcome, because I need sleep. These late nights with NES make for very long days at work. I know we need to spent a lot more time with it, but with so many cartridges on the market we'll be playing 1987 games in 2001. So all help would be greatly appreciated. Answers to questions like: How do you get the weapons, which weapons are the best for what areas and where can they be found. What areas do you avoid and where are "hidden treasures". Little things that will help us so we can move on to other great NES adventures while we are still young!! Thank you in advance for any help. A Tired Russ

Re .7: Weapons appear in certain places or when you kill zombies at the beginning of the game. I use the short sword throughout the entire area I have gotten through, up to the sixth gate. That's all you really need to know for now; there are a few special items, but most are not important. You have several areas to go before you find the place where you can get free armor once. -- edp

To pick your starting level: Push Right and hold it. Push B three times. Push Up and release. Push B three times. Push Left and release. Push B three times. Push Down and release. Push B three times. Then push Start. The game will start, but before play actually starts, you will be prompted with a level message. Use A to advance the level and B to back up. You will also be prompted each time you are killed, until the end of the game. I recommend starting on 1A and getting the short sword, then getting killed and going on to the level you want. -- edp

I tried it and it works just fine for me. It took a couple of tries to get it right, but after that I was able to go to each section. An interesting thing is that some of the sections are broken down even further. You can go to 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 2C, ... I used the method to kill the Devel in level 7. You have to do it twice to actually finish the game. jerry

I followed the instructions as Eric posted them. As I said it took several tries at first but after that I had no problem. You only hold the control to the right when you push B. The other three directions you must release before you push B. Also I had to complete the sequence before the demo play started, which means you have to move pretty fast. The first problem I had was that I had my B button on auto fire. That is about all I can remember about it. I will try it again tonight and see if I notice that I do anything different. jerry

Re .11, .13: Here it is as explicitly as I can write it. If you have a special joystick, make sure the Turbo feature (rapid-fire) is off. Do this at the very first screen, the one that comes on when you turn on the system, with the name of the game and the one-player/two-player options displayed. Push Right and hold it. Push and release B three times. Release Right. Push and release Up. Push and release B three times. Push and release Left. Push and release B three times. Push and release Down. Push and release B three times. Push Start. Wait. The music will start, you'll see the devil kidnapping the princess, and the display of the landscape. Then the level message will appear. -- edp

Re .25: It's just a matter of learning the timing. You need to get within range of one of the enemy and fire until they are dead -- if you can get within range and fire quickly, they will never through anything at you. The ones above aren't much of a problem because they pace back and forth rather than actively chasing you. Whenever you pass under them (or they above you), they turn and fire downwards -- simply avoid being under them for more than a second. You can even lock them in place by getting them to stoop down towards you but moving slightly out of their way. They will remain in position, firing repeatedly, but you will be out of their line of fire. You don't have to shoot one of them if you can get above it; they never fire upwards. I would go in, climb up to the second level, shoot the guy on that level, go as far to the right as I could, shoot the guy on the other side of the wall, go up and avoid or shoot as necessary, again shoot the guy on the other side of the wall, go up, right, and down. -- edp

Possible spoiler on Big Men The good thing about the house with the "Big Men" in it is you can shoot through the walls and kill the ones on the other side before they even "see" you. If you go all the way to the top of the house and to the left, jump and armor will fall, if you get hit going up...one thing though make sure you go down the next available ladder on your right, because if you travel too far right on the top level it triggers the game to drop a fireball right in front of a ladder going down, then your stuck with the fireball as a wepon.... I have never tried it but if you shoot two fireballs and create a fire, the big men will run into it continuously, this may be a method to try in killing the Big Men. Ron.
42.30 | Help with these bloody red devils! | HOTSHT::SCHNEIDER | Oh+ | Fri Apr 27 1990 18:37 | 22 |
I have gone as far as I can go in this game and need some help. I'm stuck in the second phase of the third level, the one with all the red devils. This is the level where you climb up the brick staircases to start and see a red devil right away. At this point (I've tried it probably well over 50 times), I can almost always get by him, perhaps losing armor, perhaps not. I get up the stairs to the next red devil. Give him one shot and run away, and when I come back he disappears. Up more stairs over the pink ghostly things, up a ladder, back down to get the 10,000 point king thingy, back up the ladder. Up more stairs and get the white flying things to come up one at a time. Back down with a jump and some armor appears, so back up and put it on. Okay, so I've got my armor, get to the top of these stairs, and there's the third red devil. Almost always at least lose armor to him. Often run away from him, down the other side though, advancing on, armorless. Way way down I fall, past red devil number 4, and finally land near red devil #5. He's a killer. I've gotten by him exactly twice, and once killed the dragon as well, completing the level, but it was luck and not skill. I need some ideas for red devil #3 and #5. Most of my games finish with #5, but #3 puts the serious hurt on me. Dan

Sometimes this doesn't happen and I can jump at the right time and get over the tombstone. It looks like a bunch (about 4) zombies come out of the ground at about the same time. Neal

I never seem to have any trouble running to the left. I tried it again last night and didn't have any problems. I made it past the zombies and smooshed by a bunch of flying things, then the Celtics came on so I stoppped playing. I'm not sure what the problem was... Neal |
