31.1 | Great game... | VINO::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi | Tue Dec 08 1987 10:14 | 34 |
| Basically, I agree with our previous noter. The T-22 missiles are
sufficient for land and sea battles while the T-11s are great for
dog fighting.
Mission 1 was fairly easy to get through. I was even able to land
the plane on the aircraft carrier when it was time. Landing is not
that hard if you have taken any flying lessons before. The fundamentals
are the same.
The furthest I have gotten is to the end of mission 3. I was shot
down while trying to destory the enemy's land fort. Final score
was 47,400 points. I have no idea what each enemy item is worth
when you destory it and if you get more points for shooting it down
with cannons as opposed to missiles.
It is not the greatest flight simulator in the world but I don't
think that is what it is intended for. It is an exciting game that
makes you want to get better. You don't get another plane every
50,000 points. You get 3 planes period.
Refueling is interesting. It is pretty tricky too. I was able to
forgo refueling during a mission (mostly because I couldn't hook
up with my refueler) and still complete the mission. At that time
I had 10 T-33 missiles with me. It only takes a couple of them to
destroy the aircraft carrier.
If anyone gets to mission 4, let us know what it is like. If anyone
finishes mission 4, really let us know what happened. I was so close
to getting to mission 4 last night. Close doesn't count in this
game :-).
I would rate it a 9.

31.2 | This game gets me more interested the more I play | VINO::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi | Wed Dec 09 1987 18:43 | 28 |
| Semi spoiler to follow:
Well, I have been able to successfully get past missions 1-3. Hi score
is now at 71,600. Definitely a good game. Once you past 50,000 you get
a message on the screen after you use up all planes that says you have
joined the "best of the best" and it has a picture of the Top Gun
trophy in the corner. Pretty neat.
Mission 4.... Ah yes... I didn't get too far into it but it got real
interesting. The mission is to destroy the enemy's space shuttle. The
mission map appears to be a setting in the Indian Ocean and you launch
close to Saudi Arabia. The "X" that marks the space shuttle appears to
be about where Moscow would be in the real world. Subtle...
I started mission 4 and there was lots of aircraft coming at me. It tests
your dogfighting skills. Next is combat air-to-sea or something like that.
More enemy planes come at you and they are real tough to shoot down. I
was able to get by on missions 2 and 3 by not dealing with ground/sea level
obstacles and just by dogfighting. I imagine as mission 4 progresses, I
will not be able to get by on that. I am still wondering which missiles
I should take on mission 4. If I bring T-11's I can shoot down more things
with guided missiles but if I bring T-33's I probably can destory the
space shuttle quicker.
Now to find out what happens after mission 4... There must be something.
It can't just end. I'll be real disappointed if it does.

31.6 | What's after the shuttle??? | VINO::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi | Mon Dec 21 1987 10:04 | 18 |
| I have yet to complete mission 4. I have gotten to it and have been
about half way through. Tonight, I was planning on taking it to
town and going all the way through mission 4.
Some hints for doing it:
I found that you get more points for destroying more enemy "items".
If you want to live, you stay high in the sky and avoid fighting
as much as possible in missions 2 and 3. I usually fight the first
few planes and then climb to around 30000 feet and keep my nose
pointed that way. If you do this long enough, you approach the enemy
target, destroy it and then back to the ship. I think I am going
to try this in mission 4 too.
If anyone finishes off the space shuttle, please let us know what
comes next! I am dying to know.

finally found a use for the T-33 missiles....
Anyone take a picture of their high score yet? I got this coupon

Yea, I found that T-33's are the best for destroying the shuttle.
It takes fewer of them and you can concentrate on dodging the mess
coming at you.
About the continuous climb through the 3 missions:
It's the easy way get to the shuttle. You don't get many points.
My highest score is 101,700 and that's with shooting things down.
As to the end of the game - there just ain't one. After destroting
the shuttle, you start the missions over and your score continues
to climb. So don't shut that game off just yet, keep escalating
your score....

2. Any tactical or strategic help would be appreciated. I have

Why does the continuous fire option seem to inhibit landing and

|
31.23 | it does take practice | VINO::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi | Mon Feb 01 1988 17:17 | 26 |
| RE .22:
About continuous fire... I think that makes landing and refueling
difficult because it simulates pushing the A button many times.
During landing and refueling, pushing the A button speeds up your
aircraft (I think).
About mission 2 and some tactics. I guess I use the memorization
tactic. Basically, every mission is the same from game to game so
if you can picture the sequence of events as they occur, you can
anticipate the next event. In mission 2, the first plane appears
on your left and almost imeediately after that, the next plane appears
higher than you and he fires a heat seeking missile. It takes practice
from there.
By the way, the heat seeking missiles can be dodged. If you are
breaking high and right and a missile begins to home in on you,
dive to the left just before it hits and it will fly right by you.
If you are too slow, you'll get hit and if you move too soon, it
will readjust its course.
Spend more time evading the missiles instead of trying to shoot
them down.
Good luck.

Mike just gave you the best advice you'll get, I think. You
can go all the way through the game avoiding (almost) every
oncoming plane, missile, gunship, AA shell etc., by keeping the
nose up and weaving as soon as you see anything coming at you.
Your score won't be so great though for obvious reasons. It's
a delicate balance between hitting enough targets and avoiding
the rest - don't forget that the aim of the game is to make it
through the last phase, not to destroy everything on the way...
Andy.

| Re .25:
For missions 2 and 3 I carry the T-22 rockets. They offer enough
fire power to destroy the carrier with not too many shots. I think
it takes about 6 or 7 of them total. Another helpful hint about
destroying the aircraft carrier (it applies to the land base too):
Try to keep shooting the aircraft carrier with guns between missiles.
This will allow you to use fewer missiles and it is not too hard
to hit the carrier with guns. The missiles that the carrier launches
I find usually must be shot down (at least one of the two). Go for
the higher one and the lower one will miss you.
When you get to mission 4, you'll want to take T-33 missiles for
the space shuttle. By the time you are ready for 4, you should be
adept enough at shooting planes down good enough to not rely on
missiles.
Good luck and let us know how you make out!

I've been playing TOP GUN with my EPXY joy stick and having a real
hard time docking with the PLANE to refule. I found out yesterday
after ripping apart the unit that the AUTOFIRE off button had a
break in one of the leads to the pad area. (Lousy Joy Stick)
Even with tinfoil to complete the connection its not good. So
I went in search of the NES Max controller I've heard so much about
in this notes file.
I finally found one at the ENTERTAINMENT WAREHOUSE in the Phesant
Lane Mall. I had to wrestle it out of the hands of the store manager
who wanted to buy it because it was the last one.
Now I can dock with the plane real easy. Its even easier when I
turn the control 180 degrees around and pretend I'm the fuel tube
trying to catch the plane.
Since I don't die (run out of fuel) I made it to Mission 4 and
TOP GUN with a score of 60,800.

Spoiler warning [not a real big one, though...]
For both refueling and landing, turn off the repeat if you've got
the Advantage. Took me awhile to realize this...
Other than that, you've just gotta learn how to handle your plane!
Slightly larger spoiler warning...
If you keep the nose down the entire time (stick pushed forward)
the planes can't shoot you, and you can deal with just the ships...
Turn on the repeat (somewhat slow setting) for the missles... You'll
lock on and fire very quickly. Helps out a lot. Remeber to turn
it off when refueling and landing, though...
You can also take out the Carrier with your machine gun, but it
takes awhile (I had to do this once when I ran out of missles).

| Dave,
My brother-in-law has/d the same problem until I watched him
play a couple of games and then talked him through a refueling.
The problem was that he was over-controlling the plane (happens
in real flying too! in that he was giving control movement
until the 'UP' message or whatever went away, to be replaced
with a 'DOWN' message because of the over controlling. Does
this sound like what you're doing? In any case, The approach I
find works for me is to essentially ignore the words and
concentrate on placing the tip of the probe exactly onto the
'X' in front of the cockpit, using only dabs of control, rather
than prolonged pushes of the stick. Similarly, use the
throttle buttons to speed up/slow down to get the probe tip on
the cross and it should lock straight in. Good luck!

to refuel I swore there was a trick to it. Turns out, there isn't.
here's some suggestions that helped me. (Infact, there in this
note..)
1. Don't over control the jet. Fly as straight as you can. Don't
do any more than soft touch your controls.
2. Use the small radar screen, and don't bother looking out the
wondow of the cockpit, doesn't do any help at all. Line up the
fuel rod with the center cross point of the X in the small radar
screen.
3. If your using the Advantage stick, swtich off the turbo buttons.
Helps to better control your speed up, speed down tactics.
It is quite easy once you get the hang of it...

last night I got into the 3rd level for the first time !!
I didn't last long but I managed to land in the 1st level
and refuel and destroy the carrier in the 2nd level. I missed
my landing in the 2nd and got creamed right at the beginning
of the 3rd. I'll try the previous refueling hint tonight as
I still have trouble connecting.

| Ok... Ok... last night I got past the training segment and landed
on the carrier and didn't get shot once! Got past everything and
shot down nearly everything in sight then got the carrier too!
Again I didn't take one hit! So off I go to the blowup the enemy
base! I was blowing up everything in sight, refueled no problem
(I got that down to a science now) now the screen says that the
2nd target is in sight YA-HOO and I didn't take a hit yet!
I'm ready guys!
I'm ready to wipe it out completely!
Blow it to heck I will!
WHA?
What's that?
The Phone??????? @#$%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOOOOOooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well... by the time I got back I was splattered into a million pieces!
What did I do at that point?
I shut off the system and went to bed. (sigh) :^( .

31.49 | A little discouraged? Try wimping out.... | CSCMA::M_ELDRIDGE | | Mon Feb 27 1989 10:02 | 17 |
| For those of you that want to finish the game and see the end...
Not to brag (not TOO much, anyways!), I got to the end of the game
last night and finished it. It was my second time getting to the
last level. What I did, basically, was wimp out. I ignored
everything and went for the main objective.
I did this by staying up around 30,000 feet. Whenever anything
comes on screen, ships, landbased targets, fighters, etc... I
tipped my nose up a bit. Nothing on the land will hit you, and
most of the fighters will ignore you. Once any missile coming at
you goes out of the window, you can tilt back and it's gone.
It was actually a little disappointing to 'cheat' and finish the
game like that. Now I'm going to go back and fight my way through
all levels. A bit more challenge. However, by cheating I still
got 95,500 points.

| Hi,
Re: -.1
Concerning your 95.5K points; now when you start the game, does it
"tell" you the top score is 95500 (i.e; that scores ge 50K are
"locked" in)?.
Re: .44,.45
I'm still not perfect concerning getting fuel - but I'm now fueling
up about half of the time.

| I hadn't really noticed if it keeps track of the high score. Perhaps
someone else could address this. I really don't think so. Once
the machine is turned off, all high scores are reset.

31.52 | it do reset | VINO::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi | Tue Feb 28 1989 13:17 | 6 |
| As long as the game remains loaded and the set powered on, then
the high scores are changed as necessary. Once you power the game
off or change cartridges and then go back to TOP GUN, the high score
resets itself to 50,000.

I found a sure-fire way to fuel up every time. When the 747 comes
over you, simply hold the button down to speed up. When the speed
up command disappears, All you may have to do is tap the joystick
left or right(depening what side the nozzle is on). It will
connect no problem.

31.54 | more theory | WLDWST::DRAKE | | Tue May 09 1989 19:00 | 25 |
| Thid is the fist time I've participated in this forum, but I have
some additional theory for the fly boys and girls of the D.E.A.F.
In mission 1 I stay at the auto-altitude and fly with my guns-a-blazin'
veering side to side & vertically only slightly. There is no need
for missles.
In mission 2, I fly as low as possible keeping the nose pointed
down. This increases the speed and uses less fuel than fling at
high altitudes. 20 missles are more than enough to take care of
the various ships and stagling jets you come accross. The enemy
aircraft carrier can be destroyed with the guns and you get a
bigger bonus doing it that way.
I use the same tactics for level 3 but I haven't played level 4
enough to figure that one out. The one time I got there I was
blown out of orbit before I could figure out what was shooting
at me!
Achieving TOP GUN is no sweat but surviving the acrobatic enemy
space planes is another thing. I guess I'll try the high altitude
method for that level and avoid every thing.

This is probably a dumb question, and I imagine the answer is "no", but
is there any way to Pause this darned game? All the other Nintendos
I've played have that ability, but this doesn't. I ended up smashed
into the ocean yesterday 'cause I had to put fabric softener in the
@#&^&^ washing machine!!! [growl, grumble, grrrr...]
Thanks,

The only pause you get is when you've landed (or crashed
trying) on the home carrier and the missile select screen comes
up.

| After a long spell without Top Gun, I recently picked up a used game
for $8 and began playing again; it is good to salve my wounded ego
after getting hosed in Top Gun II! ;^)
It took a while to regain my proficiency (several landing crack-ups,
ouch!) but soon I progressed past my previous high point - the desert
fortress. Last night was the first time I made it into the space
scenario with all my fighters intact. However, I got wasted pretty
quickly...... :^(
Could someone who has been there already tell me the sequence of events
in Level 4 (Air-to-air, air-to-sea, refueling, etc.) leading up to the
encounter with the shuttle?
