Note 323.0 Nintendo Entertainment System 56 replies
BEING::POSTPISCHIL "Always mount a scratch monkey." 60 lines 11-JUN-1986 17:41
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got a Nintendo Entertainment System a couple of weeks ago, so I
thought I'd enter a description of it. I got mine from a place in
California. It may not be readily available in stores for a few
months, although the Zayre in Royal Ridge Mall has it.
NES is a video game. Who needs another home video game? Didn't they
die a few years ago? Well, NES is several steps above the others I've
seen. The graphics are excellent, probably as good as you can get on a
television. (According to Nintendo, they are "perfectly equal" to
arcade games, although they are rendered on a television instead of
special monitors.) The control is responsive. Several of the games I
have go on through many (32, 40, 100) levels. From what I've seen so
far, these levels are designed. (A cheap way to get many levels is to
generate them randomly or pseudo-randomly instead of designing each one
and recording it in ROM. Obviously, the game will be better if traps
and various schemes have been designed into it.) Unlike other games in
which the play may be limited, there is quite a variety in Nintendo
games. By this, I am referring to some of the games where a character
moves around a screen (which scrolls right-left or up-down to expand
the area off the screen) while attempting to complete some objective,
such as knocking down certain objects or collecting dynamite. The
variety comes in where some of the tools in the game may be used in
several ways. For example, gates that move up and down and which must
be moved to let the player pass can be used to block a monster's path,
crush the monster, trap a monster, and act as an elevator for the
player. Similar multi-purpose objects appear in other NES games, and
they are a feature found more often in arcade games than home games.
The "mazes" are also laid out so that various paths and tricks must be
discovered if the game is to be completed.
NES comes with a couple of accessories. One is a gun which used to
shoot objects on the television screen. The other is a small robot
which can move its arms up and down, turn them left and right, and open
and close them. You place the robot in front of the television, turn
it so its head is facing the set and tilt the head. It then gets its
commands from the television screen -- no wires go from the central NES
component to the robot (the screen flickers for a fraction of a second
when the robot is being given a command). In a game which comes with
the system, the robot is used to move gyroscopes between holders, a
motor, and platforms. Placing gyroscopes on platforms and removing
them moves gates up and down in the game. (The platforms are arranged
to push buttons on a controller which is connected to the central
component.) I had thought the robot would not be very good and might
detract from the play of the game, but it is actually pretty
interesting and the game works well, but I don't know how useful
it will be with other games.
Nintendo has 17 games out and plans to release ten more soon. Some
are arcade games (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Mario Brothers,
and others) and some are new. It will be interesting to see how
this competes with the Atari 7800. The price is higher, around
$150, but they are available now.
Well, I'll leave the description at that for now. The NES might get
boring after a while (the Atari 2600 sure did), but I think it will
last a lot longer than older systems. If you have any questions, send
me mail.

-< It is called FAMICOM in Japan >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nintendo Entertainment System is called "FAMILY COMPUTER" or
"FAMICOM" in Japan. FAMICOM was selling by Nintendo over
6,000,000 units in Japan, and it is the topic of conversation
among the pupil.
FAMICOM's summary specification as follows:
CPU : 40pin custom chip (Instruction is 6502 compatible)
Custom Graphic and Sound controller (40pin)
Static RAM : 2114 x 2 (1kbyte ??)
Number of color : over 50
ROM cassette : 256kbits ROM x 1 - Program area
64kbits ROM x 1 - Graphic data area
This spring, Nintendo released a FAMICOM DISK SYSTEM. This is
a Quick Disk System. (Quick Disk is like a 3.5inch Floppy Disk,
but not a FDs) It can save and restore a game data, such as Adven-
ture or Role playing game. And, it can re-writing a new game program
by DISK WRITER. DISK WRITER is a game program vending machine, and
it set up in chief department store in Tokyo.
My brother using a FAMICOM, and it is very interesting and excellent.
Released game software in Japan is over 100 title. Some are arcade
games, and some are FAMICOM original games. I like following game
especially.
Donkey Kong - Arcade game
Mario Bros. - Arcade game, 2 player can playing a game
same time
Super Mario Bros. - FAMICOM original game, miliion saler game
Super Mario Bros. 2 - New game (released on 2-June)
champion ship "Super Mario Bros."
This is DISK only (no ROM cartridge)
FAMICOM system price as follows:
FAMILY COMPUTER : 15,000 Yen
DISK SYSTEM : 15,000 Yen
AC adapter : 1,500 Yen (for DISK SYSTEM)
Game ROM cassette : 3,500 Yen
Game DISK : 2,500 Yen
DISK re-write : 500 Yen

Re .1:
That's interesting. I noticed the cartridges had 72 connections,
so I knew thing was powerful, and I was wondering what the technical
specifications were.
For others, let me add that the sound reproduction is good enough
to form easily understandable words, although I have seen this used
only for six words in one game.
The disk system explains the SAVE and LOAD options in the Wrecking
Crew cartridge. This cartridge lets you design four buildings of
your own, and apparently it may be possible to save them on disk
in the future.
Can you provide more information on Adventure and other role-playing
games? (Maybe you shouldn't tell me anything; I don't know when
they'll be available here and the anticipation will kill me.)
100 titles! I wonder if the Japanese cartridges would be compatible
with the control deck I have.

Takashi, I'd like to pick your brains about Super Mario Brothers.
I found the Warp Zone in area 1-2 which will let you jump to 2-1,
3-1, and 4-1, and I found the Zone in 4-2 which lets you jump to
5-1. I have managed to work my way from there to 5-4 and even to
6-4 on occasion, but I usually die before I can go further, even
though I have seven Mario's (three from one-up mushrooms and one
from 100 coins).
Is there a way to jump to levels higher than 5?

Yes, there is in World 4-2.
You should find hidden blocks out to jump up to Warp_Zone.
But I forgot in detail, because I didn't play it for 4 months.
In Japan, more exciting games are released. But regrettablry,
NES connector is defferent from Japanese one. So, I can't show

Re .5, .6:
Thank you for the information. It was actually from response .4 that I
went and found the hidden stones myself -- and I did find (the hard
way) that you had to avoid hitting the highest one in the group of
four. Getting directly to the higher levels let me work my way
through worlds six, seven, and even eight (sometimes, with difficulty).
Now I am working on the castle. I figure you are supposed to go
through the castle in a certain pattern, like a couple of the previous
castles required, but I can't figure it out. I will accept hints,
but please don't give everything away.
Thanks for the information about the fireworks; I had figured out
it had something to do with the score, but I hadn't completely
determined the relationship.
The instructions say there are several ways to kill the giant turtle
at the end of the castle, but I have only been able to kill it with
fireballs and opening the drawbridge. Out of curiosity, are there
any other ways?
How about the Wrecking Crew game, where you have to knock down walls?
I have not been able to figure out level 95. You are so pressed
for time, it does not seem possible to get all the walls before
being killed, even though I can pass under the fireball. Is there
some trick?

Re .8:
Yesterday, I was a little annoyed that you wouldn't give me a hint;
today I am thankful. It was more fun discovering it on my own. I have
finally finished world eight. I should have figured it out sooner;
everything I needed to do was foreshadowed.
I also finished the last level of Wrecking Crew, 95 (I finished 96 to
100 out of order). The designer of that was sneaky, but it was also
foreshadowed (that is, I could figure out what I needed to do by
thinking about things I had seen before -- the puzzle required
thinking, not special tricks).

-< The Legend of ZELDA: >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-< A new video game for adventurous players only. >-
This game is not for the faint-hearted video player. It will make your
nerves jump, your blood race, and your eyes pop with all the
excitement!
The legend begins in the fantasy land of Hyrule -- once a peaceful
country of lakes, mountains, and forests.
But Hyrule is tranquil no more. The evil Ganon has captured the gentle
Princess Zelda, cruelly imprisoned her, and stolen the coveted Triforce
of Power.
Princess saves Triforce of Wisdom.
Before she was captured, however, the wily Princess took the Triforce
of Wisdom, broke it into eight pieces, and scattered them secretly
throughout the land.
Link, the hero of this fast-paced fantasy, heard the whole sorrowful
tale from Impa, trusted nanny to Princess Zelda. Following hints from
Impa, you set out to find the eight pieces of the Triforce needed to
challenge the evil Ganon.
Link fights back.
Your search for the Triforce of Wisdom is action packed. Vicious
Oktoroks, creepy Tektites, the vast terrain of the Overworld, dark
labyrinths of the Underworld, mysterious tips, special purchases,
secret passageways, your journey is marked by endless challenge and
adventure. You have to play smart and fast to save Zelda from the
clutches of the Evil Ganon.
Start right where you left off.
One of the best things about our hot new game is it never forgets! You
can play for an hour, turn it off, and come back to all the
possessions, tips, and treasures you've fought and thought so hard to
get. Play at your house in the monring and your friend's house in the
afternoon. You can pick up right where you left off. Had you finally
won the right to wield the magical sword? Had you just found another
valuable piece of the Triforce? All the fun is right where you left
it.
And it couldn't be easier to share the adventure with your friends.
The Legend of ZELDA has battery backed up memory so you and two of your
good buddies can share the treasures and weapons you have fought so
hard to gain.
A game that's solid gold.
This game is so special, we even packed it in gold. What's so
different? It has the fast action you'd expect from an arcade hit,
along with all the depth and advanced roll playing of personal computer
games. The best of both worlds!

Playing tips from the experts on this issue's featured games.
Super Mario Brothers Encyclopedia
The following tips and tricks are for expert players, so don't feel too
frustrated if they don't make sense right off! If you try them,
following the tips exactly for best results.
[I have only entered the tips I do not recall from the How to Win
guide. The best one is last! By the way, there is an order form, and
the price for the guide seems to be $4.95 with no shipping charge.
There are also Slalom and Pro Wrestling tips, but I have not entered
them -- let me know if anybody wants them. -- edp]
Dungeon Tricks
Did you know that Super Mario can walk through brick walls in the
dungeons? To do this, you have to get to a place where there are no
bricks above you. Move to the right, making a chimney at the left edge
of the screen. Go to the left, crouch, and jump. Stand up at the peak
of the jump, and you will get caught high in the chimney. Then move to
the left while jumping until Mario moves off the wall to the right --
through the bricks! Be careful, because you may get stuck.
Small Fiery Mario
Here's a novel idea: small fiery Mario! To do this, take Super Mario
past Bowser. Of course, the evil dragon will come after you. Wait.
Timing is very important. Just as he is about to get you, jump! As
you come down, you hit Bowser and the ax at the same time, and it
doesn't make you small. Next level, you'll still be big. Get a
mushroom, and guess what? It makes you small! Then the next fire
flower you find will turn you into a small fiery Mario.
Cloud Trick
Sometimes, when you're riding a cloud, other clouds come along to push
you off, right? Well walk to the left as it pushes you, and you'll
find you can pass right through the cloud.
50,000 Points
This is one tough trick. Grab the ax behind Bowser exactly when time
runs out. It takes great skill. If you jump over Bowser or run under
him, and get the ax just as time reaches "000," you won't die. You'll
win a big bonus: 50,000 points!
Coins Loop
This is a tricky way to get points. If you find a 1-Up Mushroom then
get to a coin room and die, you can loop back to the 1-Up Mushroom and
repeat the whole process. Of course, while you're in the coin room
each time, you get all the coins! The first chance to do this trick is
in World 1-2. [Not true -- it is just barely possible to get to the
coin room in 1-1 after getting the 1-Up Mushroom. -- edp] Get the 1-Up
Mushroom in the ceiling just before the green pipe. Then go down the
pipe, collect the coins, and let time run out. Re-start World 1-2, and
repeat.
Turtle Tip
Come to a place where there are turtles coming down the stairs towards
you. Move to the right until the left edge of the screen makes a
pocket at the base of the stairs. Just as the turtle comes down, jump
up on his left, and flip him. Then kick him back against the stairs
repeatedly for points and unlimited lives!
Minus World
So far, we have only been able to get to World Minus One, but we know
of Worlds Minus Two, Three, and Four from our buddies in Japan. Have
you found them? Try this. With Super or Fiery Mario, stand on top of
the horizontal green pipe near the end of World 1-2. Break two of the
overhead blocks leaving the one nearest to the wall on the right
intact. Standing on the left edge of the pipe facing left, jump up and
move right. Try to get the back of your head stuck in the overhead
block. Then move through the wall and enter the far left Warp Zone to
get to World Minus One.

-< The NES Advantage >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We weren't going to bring out a new joystick until we could make one
for your use at home that could match the feel of the arcade.
Well, a fellow who works at Nintendo named Lance Barr did just that.
He even went to Japan to do research for his design.
The new unit is specially weighted with a metal plate at its base so it
stays on the table without sliding around during all the excitement of
the game!
It also gives you far more control over your moves, with its "turbo"
and "slow" action features. There are two "T" adjustors, one for each
of the "A" and "B" buttons, and an "S" adjustor which lets you go into
slow motion so you can plan your next move.
Only one joystick gives you rapid fire.
This is the first and only joystick on the market for home use that
gives you so much fast action and control.
It's even better than what you use in the arcades.
For example, you can send out a burst of rapid fire if you've run into
a horde of pesky enemies by holding down the "fire" button.
Lance has spent a lot of time and thought developing the joystick. He
wanted to make sure it matched with one of his other major product
designs -- the Nintendo Entertainment System. Lance holds the position
of Product Designer at Nintendo of American, Inc!
[I entered all this because I was not sure exactly what the joystick
does. I think the fast/slow "T" adjustors let you make the A or B
buttons autorepeat -- the joystick sends signals to the system just as
if you were pressing the button repeatedly. The "S" adjustor must
either send a new signal to the system telling it to slow down, or
perhaps it repeatedly sends "start" to the system -- the start button
is used in many games to pause, so sending it repeatedly would start
and stop the game quickly, simulating slow motion. If anybody gets
this joystick, please let us know. -- edp]

Re .17:
I have used the "Coins Loop" and I have seen World Minus One. I think
the trick used to get into Minus One is similar to the walking through
walls item in "Dungeon Tricks". The "Coins Loop" is not difficult at
all; you just have to know where to do it.
Some of the other tricks I _might_ be able to do on a good day. They
look tough. Try getting to World Minus One. I usually have to stand
on the edge of the pipe, turn left, jump and push right, and do this
several times before it works just right. Once you get it, you'll
know.
World Minus One is an undersea world. Once in it, you just keep going
through it over and over again.

There have been a few notes that mention the Nintendo system,
(this one, 500,526,529). People have listed the currently available
cartridges, and those that are expected to be on the shelves
soon. I've also seen a couple games praised, Gradius and Super

What I would like to see is some price versus value comments.
Would anyone mind adding their impression of which games may not
be worth the investment? At $20 - $30 bucks a shot, I don't
want to bring home another one that only gathers dust. So, what
game should I get next?
For what it is worth, I'll give my impressions...
Duck Hunt - As with most, if not all, of the NES games,
graphics are great. This one is just FUN.
Football - Got this one right away and it was a disappointment.
I've played other home games that put this to shame.
Not much flexibility in play-making, and passing to
only one down-field receiver is too restrictive.
My suggestion is that this is not worth the investment
unless you've got most of the other games and want
something different.
Baseball - Almost didn't pick this one up (fearing an instant
replay of football) but it turned out to be one of
the most played games. Lots of control in pitching
(curves, fast balls, slow balls, throwing runners out,
etc...), running (stealing, run downs, choice of
runners or all), and batting (bunts, full or partial
swings, placing fields, position of batter in box).
All in all a good game, no control over fielders
initially fielding the ball, but you can't have everything.
Hogan's Alley - Good game for gun. Gets a little tiring after a
while.
Gyromite - This one is for your R.O.B. A robot responds directly
to the tv screen. You control it. Sounded like a big
gimmick to me at first but it was really entertaining.
After a while it's a bit of a hassle to set up, but
it always comes out when company is over.
Donkey Kong - If you've played in the arcade, it's not drastically
different. Good game.
Golf - Now here is a great game. If you enjoy golf, or possibly
even if you don't, this is a good buy. My biggest
complaint is that it's the same fictional course every
time. But you have the full range of clubs, and plenty
of hazards to avoid, sand, water, trees, etc... You
have control of full and partial swing, as well as
control over how close to the 'sweet spot' that you
hit the ball. Miss that spot and you could hook or
slice drastically.

Following are rated from 0 to 10. I would buy the ones above 5 again, all
things considered. The ones rated 10 make the system worth it, even if no
other games existed. Talk about searching for the perfect "10" !
10 Ghost n' Goblins DYN-O-MITE, addicting, >100hours *can save position
10 Gradius Exciting, Challenging, >100hours -can not save position
9 Super Mario Many boards, hidden things, kids love it
8 Ninja Kid Harder then it looks - Kind of fun
7 Pin Ball Kids like it - fun but short interest span for me
6 Ice Climber Interesting but doesn't really hold attention
5 Slalom Different, interesting feel on big screen TV
5 1942 Fun, shoot-em down planes, 32 boards, not too difficult
4 Gum Shoe Don't like the gun, tiring, noisy
3 Donky Kong 3 Too easy, waste of money
1 Trojan FRUSTRATING - CAN'T SAVE POSITION - Ready to throw out
0 Urban Champion Either I missed something or this is stupid.
General note: I have a 27" Sony that shows off the graphics and color
superbly. Gradius shows off particularly well - lots of action and
detailed screens.

Well, I just purchased "The Ledgend of Zelda" two days ago. I bought
it at a "Toys R Us" here in Columbus, Ohio, it cost $39.99. It
is really a complex game. The sound and graphics are great, and
you can establish up to 3 characters that the cartridge will
"remember". It comes with an instruction book and a sealed pamphlet
that is supposed to contain maps and hints. The game is divided
between the overworld and 8 subteranean labrinths (sp?). The overworld
is quite large and requires mapping to navigate it successfully.
In the overworld are shops to purchase items and information. The
seems to be an entrance for each of the 8 labrinths. Each labrinth
has a level associated with it, I have currently located levels
1, 2, and 3.
I know that there is a note for Gradius, should we start a new
one for Zelda? I also, think a note for Castlevania would be great.

in the Games notes file. I am very interested, I have had a system
for about a year and love it. I just got Zelda yesterday and I
am having a lot of fun. I have around 12 games, and I like the
tips in this notes file, but maybe there is enough interest to justify
a note file? This way you would not have to search around the games
note file for our entries about nintendo. Just a thought.
I also like the ratings entries. I may even wait until I see more
ratings before purchasing some more games. When I went to the store to
get Zelda they had about 2-4 new games that I had not heard about.

10 Ledgend of Zelda This game is going to get me

8 Super Mario This is the first game I got

7 Golf Good game to play at a party.

7 Baseball Same as above.
6 Wrecking Crew Good game to play.
5 Tennis Pretty good game to have for

2 Urban Champion Don't waste your money!!
9 Baseball Great Game!! Stealing, leading, bunting,

7 Golf Nicely done golf game! SLices, Hooks, traps,
water! Only bad point is there is only one

9 Volleyball Real fun game!!! Not easy to catch on to
but once you get the hang of it it's a
blast. You can see some pretty good
volleys (spikes, blocks, diving saves,
dinks) once you get good at it.
6 Tennis A very good job at tennis. Not that hard to
to play, and has different skill levels.
I liked it alot when I first got it. I think
it wears out becuase you can only play the computer.
When two humans play they play doubles against
the computer. Just not has fun has beating
a live person.
10 Mario Bro Great game!! You realy get hooked on this.
or It gets the five rating once you completed
5 it (saved the princess) but don't worry that
could take a lot of practice.
7 Soccer Borrowed this one once. I liked it.
4 Ten Yard Fight Boring with a capital B!!
3 The Robot Game Just never liked this one!!
5 Excitabike Good for awhile.

The more I read on these games, the more I am starting to think that my
Atari needs(?) a companion (at least Super Mario Brothers and possibly Zelda).
However, I would like to know if anyone had made "Custom" controllers for the
Nintendo System.
A little history:
Back in the days when the Atari 2600 was the "Best" home game on the market,
I became very frustrated with the "Junk" joysticks (this was before the
multitude (or even ONE) of third party options were available. The game went
into disuse till........
I bought an Arcade replacement 8 axis "Commercial" joystick and Arcade flipper
buttons and switches and built my own. Low and behold, the Atari was back
in near constant use with that great "Arcade" feel (it didn't help the graphics
but the play was greatly improved).
I feel (quite strongly) that the controlls are the most critical part of any
game system and would like feedback on the ones that come with the unit and
any "Homebrew" or third party options available prior to investing in another
system (since I currently am running a 48K Atari W/disk and custom controllers
in addition to 10 or so "Real" Arcade machines....see CSSE::COINOP).
Any feedback appreciated.

I'm using the EPYX 500XJ (c. $19.95) and I much prefer it to
the Nintendo supplied units. It has a micro-switch stick and
A/B buttons, *BUT* uses junky bubble switches for START and
SELECT (and optional auto-fire on/off) which let the unit down
badly. The stick itself is excellent, and I think that with a
couple of good p/b switches in place of the bubbles it would be
one of the best I've used. BTW, anyone know what the chip used
in the joysticks does?
I seem to remember that someone (edp?) mentioned that Nintendo
was bringing out a custom joystick for the game - any further
news?
I built my own sticks for an Atari system too, having given up
on the standard junk - even tried building a hand-held 'Le
Stick' copy using mercury switches with limited success; I
couldn't get the sensitivity right to give consistent action.
Sandy uses a WICO Arcade stick with which she seems pretty
happy.

-< The NES Advantage+ Joystick >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried the WICO joystick for Nintendo, and I found it to be a big
disappointment. I thought it was much too stiff and difficult to
control. I had high hopes for it, because the WICO controller for
the Atari 5200, was the only thing that made most of the games
reasonably playable. All in all I have been pleasesd with the Nintendo
controllers, I have found them to be consistent in play.
Nintendo has announced a new joystick style controller. Its called
the Advantage+ . The following is a extract from the write-up.
The new unit is specially weighted with a metal plate at its base
so it stays on the table without sliding around during all the
excitement of the game.
It also gives you far more control over your moves, with its "turbo" and
"slow" action features. There are two "T" adjustors, one for each
of the "A" and "B" buttons, and an "S" adjustor which lets you go
into slow motion so you can plan your next move.
This is the first and only joystick on the market for home use that
gives you so much fast action and control.
For ecample, you can send out a burst of rapid fire if you've run
into a horde of pesky enemies by holding down the "fire" button.
End of extract.
The unit has a rectangular base, from the picture the dimensions
appear to be 6x4", and tapering from 1" in the rear to 1/2" thick
in the front. The joystick is in the far left corner of the base.
It appears about 2" high with a ball at the end. The "A" and "B"
buttons each have an additional button and what appears to be some
type of rotary variable control immediately above. There is "Select"
and "Start" buttons, an additional button labeled "Slow", and a
final slide switch that I believe is labeled "Power".
It looks pretty good, but I have no idea how well it will play.

-< Report on Rygar for Nintendo >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, yesterday I invested in a new game for my Nintendo. I bought
Rygar by Tempco at Toys 'R Us for $34.99. And after my first evening
of play I am not dissapointed. Comparing it with other popular
games I would call it a cross between Castlevania and Ledgend of
Zelda. Now I will give some reasons, why I can compare it to what
I believe are the 2 best games currently available for Nintendo.
Castlevania similarities
o Graphics and music are excellent. Castlevania might be slightly
better. But Rygar is much better than Ghost 'N' Goblins.
o Primary weapon is a "grappling weapon" which is similar to the
whip.
o Movement is left and right with an occasional up an down by
rope. And a jump and stoop with attack capability.
o A similar shoot 'em up level (i.e. sitting on one screen the
monsters keep coming all the time)
o Many screens are as restrictive in choices of where to go.
Ledgend of Zelda similarities
o The ability to collect many useful objects/weapons.
o The start button displays an alternate screen that shows current
status and objects acquired. And selections can be made on
this screen.
o Some screen displays allow 4-way movement, with freedom of movement
to many different places.
o Rooms with "Idols/Gods" that give messages/hints.
o After death, the game can be continued, at the current start
location (which varies with current screen position), with all
objects, and 3 out of the current maximum life units.
I have played this game only one evening, but I think it is truly
excellent. I recommend it highly.
The only negative I can say for this game is that after power
down, you must start over from scratch. Which, is true for all
current games, except Zelda.

feel like I got my monies worth out of Rygar. There just isn't
any of those hidden and subtle things, that are found in Super Mario,
that keep you interested for the long run.
Correction to the previous note. Rygar is made by Tecmo not Tempco.

Metroid and Kid Icarus accept "passwords" which contain information

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We picked up WorldRunner and StarVoyager at Kay Bee in the
Mall of New Hampshire for $34.99 and $32.99 respectively.
WorldRunner is a lot of fun in it's own right even without
the 3-D effect - with it it's even more fun! The glasses are
supplied and the literature advertises extra pairs for $2.00
each including postage and handling. They are effective once
you adjust them to fit and the game can be played in either
mode, selectable from the joystick.
Basically it's a running+jumping game and it's _FAST_!! You
start at the bottom of the screen which commences a rolling
scroll towards you - you have to hit pillars to pick up
'Laser Missiles', 'Power Potions' etc., while avoiding the
evil beasties coming towards you.
There are 8 worlds, each with four levels - at the end of
each fourth level you have to battle with a snake-like
creature (Serpentbeast) which will move around the screen,
diminishing in size and then turning back after you as you
'fly' around it - 3-D is very good here!!
All in all, worth the money if you enjoy this kind of game -
Sandy and I are hooked. :*)
Star Voyager is a remake of the old ATARI Star Raider - much
more sophisticated in all respects and after an hour, pretty
good value - it'll take some logical thinking to beat it, The
only thing I don't like about it is the fact that the UP/DOWN
functions are reversed on the joystick which should only
present a problem if you are a pilot - pulling the stick back
makes your ship dive (as seen through the viewport)
Any questions regarding the games - just ask....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The third issue of Nintendo Fun Club News is out. It's in color now.
I'll enter various things here and more significant things for specific
games in later notes.
There are advertisements for a number of games: Elevator Action, The
Legend of Kage, Arkanoid, Renegade, Karate Champ, Tag Team Wrestling,
Burger Time, Karnov, BreakThru, Kid Niki, Ring King, Sqoon, Mighty Bomb
Jack, Solomon's Key, Lunar Pool, Zanac, Spy Hunter, Family Fun Fitness
(with a mat that goes on the floor and plugs into the Nintendo system),
Stadium Events, Section Z, The Speed Rumbler, Bionic Commando, Mega
Man, Star Force, Sky Kid, 3-D World Runner, Top Gun, and Super Pitfall.
Some games are previewed, most notably The Adventure of Link, "one of
our 'deepest' games yet with more role playing, more character
interaction, and faster paced action." ". . . the game area is larger
and played from the horizontal point of view as in Super Mario Bros."
Howard Phillips reviews all the video games for Nintendo's System in
Japan. At least count, he had close to 300.

More Energy
The fastest way to build up your energy supply is to defeat the
Metroids. Try it and see!
Escape Plans
When a Metroid grabs you, escape through a door, or use your bombs to
make a fast getaway.
Bombs Away
If you can't get over a wall, try using your bombs to blast yourself
over.
Bombs and guns can also help you find hidden passages.
Lava Leap
If you fall in the boiling lava, it could cost you your life. To jump
out, try waiting until you sink to the bottom of the pit, and then
jump.
Rock Climbing
To climb up a corridor, shoot the cracked rocks above you, and then
jump up. Timed right, the rocks will fill in below you, and you can
work your way up a steep cliff!
Walldoors
Open a door and stand just inside the opening. Let the door close on
you. Without budging leftright or left, move the control pad rapidly
up and down. This tricky tip doesn't work everywhere, and it may be
fatal! But it can also be just the magic you need.
End & Password
To end the game quickly, and get a password: pause, then press "UP"
and "A" on Controller II.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Super Mario Brothers
If you stomp a Koopa and wait until you see his feet stick out, and
kick him at the last second, you'll get 1,000 points.
-- Kenneth Pannell
When you jump up and get a magic mushroom or fire flower, press "A"
when the transformation is over, and you'll do a mid-air jump. Also,
when under water, if you're swimming forward and quickly reverse
direction, you'll do a back stroke.
-- Jessica Taylor
On World 3-3, do a Superjump ("B" button jump) on the last balance
lift, and you can jump over the flagpole!
-- Brian Brakus
[If anybody manages that, please let us know what is on the other
side.]
Push a Koopa Troopa's shell into a podoboo for 500 points!
-- Jason Stanley and Tim Bell
First find a star and some Little Goombas (1-2, 2-1, etc...). Hit the
box with the star in it. Flatten a Little Goomba and grab the star
quickly. Run to the flat Goomba and touch him before he disappears.
He should return to normal and hop off the screen.
-- Matthew Hudson
10-Yard Fight
When the person on offense is near the out-of-bounds line, you
(defense) can jump towards him, and he will try to move away from you
and go out of bounds. This tip works even if you are far away from
him.
-- Konrad Siewierski
Kung Fu
On the first level, if you can punch enough enemies, the bonus points
you get at the stairs should bring your score to over 50,000 (1 extra
man).
-- Brian Prince

-< Mail Order for Nintendo >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone is interested there is a mail order number out of
California called Video Take Out that is accepting orders on the
new games mentioned in .50. Some of these games are due in a week
or so and they will take your orders now and then charge your credit
card when they come in. Some of the games due are Rad Racer (3-D
Pole position type game), Punch Out by Nintendo and for Konami there
are Double Dribble (due next week) and Top Gun (due first week of
November - I was told there are a lot of orders for this game already).
As far as the other titles you may be interested in just call and
they can give you a tentative release date. The Number is:

Has anyone played and of the 3-D games for Nintendo? I just got
3D Worldrunner and I think its pretty good. I was just wondering
if anyone thought the 3D looked comparable to the 3D in the movies.

4.1 | New games .... and more to come | HBO::SWARTZ | | Mon Nov 02 1987 20:09 | 8 |
| Hey, I found a new game for those of you who are interested. I
was in Caldor picking up some Prestone and I decided, what the
heck...let's see how much these guys are getting for their cartridges.
On the shelf was this game called Ikaris Warriors. The pack had
some interesting commentary but the graphics pictures seemed to
be comparable to either ZELDA or METROID. The price was $37.99
and its new this year. If anyone has seen it in action or knows
anything about it...how about some info.

4.2 | Deluxe set Zapped off shelfs???? | MOMAX1::PILOTTE | It just keeps getting better! | Fri Dec 04 1987 09:31 | 11 |
| What has happened to the Nintendo Deluxe sets. A friend of mine
has been looking all over for the deluxe set and cannot find them.
He has called just about everystore in the Worcester county and
southern New Hampshire area but no luck. Kay-Bee toy store
in Leominster told him that Nintendo has discontinued this set.
Has anybody else heard that same rumor or has anybody seen the Deluxe
set in any stores.

4.6 | try Prime Value | HYDRA::KELLY | | Fri Dec 11 1987 13:14 | 9 |
| Try Prime Value in the Twin City Mall in Leominster. I purchased
the System Saturday, returned it Sunday and got the basic unit
instead, with a couple more cartridges. After talking about the
game with a few kids that own them, the Robot and Gun weren't
worth it. It a Christmas present for my three sons, so I haven't
experienced it yet. I'm looking for the Mike Tyson Punch Out still,
if some one knows where they're available?
