2045.0. "Q about Knuth Vol. II" by FLOYD::YODER (MFY) Mon May 06 1996 15:47

Does anyone know:

(1) Whether there was ever a 2nd edition of Knuth Vol. II, "Seminumerical
Algorithms"?

(2) Whether there is an email address to send errors found in Knuth?

(3) Where I might find a list of known errors therein?

i once saw a hardcopy list of errors, about 1/2 inch thick,
so it does exist.

sorry, i do not have a pointer.

    Re (1): I have it sitting here on my desk. The copyright date is 1981,
    and in the preface Knuth says "I estimate that about 45 percent of the
    book has changed.".

Arghhh, relative to 2045.2, for those who are readers/follows or
Knuth and aren't likely in five lifetimes to make it to "the REO
office", can you please provide a little more insight into the
title, ISBN, publisher, .....

many thanks

    Not quite such close followers if they haven't noticed this book in 16
    years!    ===>  :)   <===

    Mea culpa. I don't speak with "smilies", so I sometimes forget to write
    with them. Here it is: ===> :) <===

    Willingly. Do you know, I was expecting a question something in the
    book, but not that one!

2045.5STAN-CS-79-712 errataCPEEDY::BRADLEYChuck BradleyWed Jun 19 1996 14:3010
The list of errors is available as a Stanford University report,
STAN-CS-79-712 dated Jan 79, titled "The Errata of Computer Programming.
It covers vol 1 & 3, not 2. There was apparently an earlier version,
CS551, May 76. There may be a later version.

The DEC library in the mill used to keep many (perhaps most) of the
Stanford CS reports. Perhaps it is still available, but I could not
find it just now with the DLN software.

2045.6free copy of errata CPEEDY::BRADLEYChuck BradleyMon Jul 15 1996 18:136
i ran into the document in .5.
it is a copy of a copy of .... and is barely readable.
i copied the corrections i'm interested in.
if anyone wants it, ask. mfy gets first dibs since he asked the question.

2045.7motive for original queryFLOYD::YODERMFYThu Jul 18 1996 12:546
Just so this can (probably) reach closure... my original motive for asking was
that I had found a couple of errors in the section on continued fractions. I'll
eventually get around to getting the newer edition and checking to be sure
they're fixed.

For those whom it might concern: I've taken the dibs offered in .6. :-)
