1687.0. "Is there a formal name for the "long division" symbol?" by DANGER::HADUCH () Fri Oct 30 1992 09:42
This is not a sophisticated mathematics problem, but this is a question
which I have been unable to answer.
Is there an official name for the "symbol" that is used to perform long
division, (formed by the right parenthesis and the underscore characters
in the following representation) :
__________
23 ) 391
My son's first grade teacher asked the question, and after checking a few
sources, we cannot find a clear answer. My wife consulted a book on
preparing math problems in Braille, and they referred to it as the
"division symbol" and "separating line."
If anyone can give a definitive answer, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

| the CRC math tables book had a list of symbols in the back, but I
don't it handy. The new handbook of the mathematical sciences might
have that list as well.
