1606.0. "Code optimizers - state of the art" by DIODE::CROWELL (Jon Crowell) Sat May 09 1992 12:13
Do the mathematicians at DEC work on code optimizers and
code generators? There will be great pay back for
algorithms that can generate code that will schedule well
on the new superScaler machines (in particular Alpha).
The speed of the hardware will not be realized unless
the SW can be transformed to use it correctly.
Concise code that fit in caches will run orders of
magnitude faster. The future will be ripe for
clever transformations.
Looking at the gains that the world got with the KAP
pre-compilers it is clear that some other simple work
could yield great gains. The KAP pre-compilers mainly
re-arranged loops to better fit the caches.
