                   Symbolic Computation Software

		    from Kent State University

		     Institute of Computational
			    Mathematics

As a result of support under the NSF software instrumentation initiative,
the following packages have been released in Beta test form for anyone
interested. The packages are available thru public ftp. Instructions
are included at the end of this message.

PACKAGES:

GENTRAN -- numeric code generator
Gentran is a code translator that takes symbolically derived formulas and
procedures and produce f77, ratfor or C code. The major use of course is
to produce fortran code.

PPACK -- P-adic Polynomial factoring and gcd package
This package of programs, referred to as P-pack, con-
tains facilities for polynomial and rational function opera-
tions based on p-adic techniques. Included are the factori-
zation algorithms (univariate mod p, univariate and
multivariate over Z and over algebraic number fields), EEZ
gcd algorithm, SQUAREFREE factorization algorithm,
p-adic lifting algorithm, and univariate partial frac-
tion expansion. These are state-of-the-art routines
which should prove much faster than existing code.

SIG -- System Independent Graphing
SIG is a graphics facility for displaying mathematical curves and
surfaces. It handles 2D, 3D plots and uses any monotone or color X
workstation for display.

SIG consists of two independent parts: xgraph and mgrah.

Xgraph, written in C, is an X11 client that displays a curve/surface
defined by a set of points. The set of points can come as input from
a file or another process.

Mgraph, written in Common Lisp for MAXIMA, computes point values for the
mathematical curve/surface and stores them in a file or sends them
directly to Xgraph. This Mgraph part is small and easily modified
to work under other symbolic computation systems.

McTeX -- MAXIMA to TeX / LaTeX Converter

This AKCL/MAXIMA enhancement package for converting MAXIMA expressions
into TeX or LaTeX suitable for direct inclusion in papers or documents.

Complex operations for MAXIMA --
A package of enhancements for complex number and function operations.

             ========FTP instructions=====

The software is a beta-test version and is distributed without charge.
But we would appreciate knowing who has obtained the package.
So please send a brief note to

[email protected]

FTP procedure:

1. ftp hp4.mcs.kent.edu (or ftp 131.123.2.7)
2. Name: ftp
3. Password: name@address
4. cd /pub (note <package-name>.inst contains additional info)
5. bin
6. get <package-name>.tar.Z
7. bye
8. uncompress sig.tar
9. move it to where you want the files
10. tar xf sig.tar
11 See the Makefile and README file for other details.
