An increasing number of notes have been written recently with locally unintelligible characters in them - superscripts, mainly, I think. I have a fairly sophisticated DECwindows terminal, but I can't read them, and I suspect folks with older terminals have no chance. Now I'm in favor of plunging ahead, technology-wise, but at least those who use more advanced stuff need to take care that what they do is available to all. I'd like to see NOTES be able to deal with PostScript images, for example, but if I use that capability I feel constrained to at least tell people how to read the stuff. Maybe I'm just being dense, but will someone please explain how to (a) generate, and (b) set my terminal to read, these special-feature characters [under DECwindows]? Thanks to all contributors toward easing my failing eyesight B-)

From the Options menu choose General. In this dialog box, you want "UPSS DEC Suplemental", "8-bit Multinational Characters", and one of the two "VT300 Mode" options. And say that the terminal answers with a "DECterm ID". Then do a $ SET TERMINAL /INQUIRE, and you should be all set. If not, from the Options menu choose 7-Bit NRCS Selection. I don't think it matters (to the matter at hand), but you might check that you're using "North American". For your eyesight, you might try this: From the Options menu select Window. In that dialog box, choose the Big Font. If you were successful, the next three lines should display as plenty of INtelligible characters. About 50 of them have diacritical marks. It's the top 3/8ths of the MCS character set, with non-printable characters replaced with '#'. ########## ## ###

Thanks for the suggestions. The characters are still not readable except when using the DECwindows interface to NOTES. Guess I'll have to switch, although the DECW fonts are very faint. Signed, Mr. McGoo

It's easy to make DECwindows notes use non-faint fonts. Send me mail. |
