1377.0. "Your input needed to a UK schools programme" by FORTY2::TATHAM (Nick Tatham @REO) Wed Jan 30 1991 11:51
Here in the UK, I have been asked to provide some input to a schools
programme where education and industry are working together in the context
of 16-19 year old mathematics. The purpose of the programme is to help
refine the mathematics syllabus and to provide some mathematical examples
of real-life problems that might be useful for study at school.
I'm looking for contributions from elsewhere in Digital, and from as wide a
range of people as possible. Although this is a UK programme (note the
spelling!), I'm sure mathematics is sufficiently universal that input would
be valued from anywhere.
The programme is interested in the answers to the questions below. If you
could spare the time to answer these questions, either as replies to this
note or by mail to Nick Tatham @REO or FORTY2::TATHAM if you prefer. I will
see your input gets fed into the programme. I will make sure all input is
kept anonymous in case that worries anyone.
The questions:
Q1: What mathematical skills that you learned when you were 16-19
years old have you used during your working life?
Q2: What mathematical skills that you have used during your working
life do you think you should have learnt when you were 16-19 years
old?
Q3: Can you think of any examples of mathematical applications from
your area of work for inclusion in the materials that are being
developed for 16-19 year old mathematics?
Thanks
Nick Tatham
