I just finished an algebra II course and had signed up for precalc.
I had to take an exam the first day of class to qualify for the class.
The instructor told me I should take the qualifying test for calculus.
I did and got a fair grade. To get into the course required a minimum 10
maximum 25, I got 18. I was unsure which class to take, but since I
drive 3 hours a day and work full time, I decided to take the calculus.
(I figure about 10 years to a degree part time and school is 90 miles
away). I haven't had trig.
I suppose it is hard to tell whether I can handle the math or not, but
I am wondering where I should concentrate my trig to be sure I don't
fall flat on my face. thanx, galen..._._

you mean you could have conceivably gotten a 26 and been stuck back in
precalc? just kidding... when i took calc i didnt have trig... the
first half of most calc sequences (pun not intended :) have no trig and
lots of analytical geometry. the trig required for the next term in
sequence i was in required nothing more than knowing (ie, memorizing) simple
identities one could illicit from the inside cover of a trig book...no
biggy... the trig identities are used to simply such things as
integrals (in integration you use whatever you can find to simply
things!)...

I think it all depends on what kind of degree you are trying to get.
If you working on a math or science degree, I suggest you take he
calculus now, and read a trig book on your own spare time. If you are
working on something like a business degree or English degree, then it
hardly matters. School is 90 miles away, and it makes no sense to take
a course you don't later need.

Thanx much. so far, my brother is the only one filling me with doom and
gloom. I had algebra I and geometry in high school (1970) then started
precalc in 1986. Too much overtime made me dorp out as we were
coming to trig. I was getting good grades, I guess because I like math.
I plan to go for a physics degree, probably engineering physics for
now. Who knows what tomorrow brings..._._
