1297.1 | I'm not capable of answering your question | HERON::BUCHANAN | combinatorial bomb squad | Tue Sep 18 1990 07:05 | 6 |
| I suggest that you post this on Usenet. There are some competent
mathematicians living in sci.math, amongst the flakes and flamers, and you
could get some interesting serious replies.
Regards,
Andrew.

1297.2 | how to access usenet ? | SMAUG::ABBASI | | Tue Sep 18 1990 11:42 | 5 |
| Thanks andrew, I really dont know how to access usenet, how to use it
etc.. any pointers to how to access usenet and use it is appreciated.

1297.3 | from the literature .. | EAGLE1::BEST | R D Best, sys arch, I/O | Tue Sep 18 1990 12:47 | 24 |
| Here are some applied math areas that are currently generating a lot
of interest. Whether they will prove to be capable of supplying an income to
a specialist is another matter.
- nonlinear dynamics ( chaos )
This is the current buzzword for 'nonlinear differential equations'. ;-)
Riccati and Volterra were ahead of their time and didn't know it.
Many potential applications across a broad range of fields.
- neural networks
Applications are (predicted) to include voice and pattern recognition,
systems that 'learn' (whatever that means), and systems that get
reasonable solutions to traditionally NP-complete problems in human scale
times.
- parallel algorithms
Somewhat specific to the computer field.
- provably correct design
See previous comment.

| Re .2:
Two programs will allow you to access Usenet news from VMS systems
within Digital. One is XRN, the other is VNEWS. XRN uses X Windows.
VNEWS can be used on any Digital terminal.
There are conferences for these programs: UFP::XRN and CLO::VNEWS. In
the XRN conference, topic 66 contains kit information. I'm not sure
about the VNEWS conference; it may be topic 16. You'll also need to
select a server to use (a node you can reach via DECnet that provides
Usenet access). I use SHLUMP. I think the VNEWS conference contains a
topic where people list available servers.
Check out the conferences. If you have any problems or questions, feel
free to send me mail.

1297.6 | Bulletin of the AMS | LOEDGE::HERMAN | Franklin B. Herman DTN 291-0170 PDM1-1/J9 | Wed Sep 19 1990 16:26 | 24 |

Although I no longer do research (its been 12 years),
I do try to participate (when possible) in this conference and subscribe
to a few of the theoretically oriented mathematics research journals.
Along with Andrews recommendation, I would like to suggest that you
take a look at the
Bulletin [New Series] of American Mathematical Society (AMS)
published quarterly. It is particularly helpful in that it is partitioned
into three sections:
Research Expository Articles,
Research Announcements
Book Reviews
with the 1st and last being the most accessible as it is intended for
more general audiences; the second and less accessible intended for
specialists. This would provide you with a flavor for active research
which as you will discover is incredibly diverse.
Goodluck,
-Franklin
