A few questions on VAXima and Maple.
1. Which one is better ? Or lets say can solve more complicated
problems (I special need differantial equations).
2. Is there a net-kit for VAXima like it is for Maple ?
(So, some kind of an only for internal use copy.)
3. Has anyone (Lynn I think you have) install Maple and noticed
that RESTORE.COM will not work cause /Save switch in backup is
missing ?! Also it does not like the logical MAPLE$LIB as long
as in the tranlation name a ':' is. (Comes from DR:[Maple.Lib])
4. Is there some kind of 'Reference-Manual' for Maple on the net
( - or near by (on tape)) ?
Julian.

VAXIMA is a more mature product with lots of goodies, but implemented
in LISP and somewhat slow. MAPLE is newer but has lots of nice features
and is relatively quick. MAPLE will handle second-order partial D.E.'s
at least. The main difference is that MAPLE is licensed to DEC (DEC
supported the research at Waterloo) while VAXIMA costs REAL money
($25000 or so per copy). No, there is no network kit for VAXIMA!
Thanks for the feedback on the MAPLE kit. I will try to get it fixed
up ASAP.
No, there is no on-line documentation for MAPLE. Waterloo is reluctant
to forgo their profits on the manual, which is cheap and well-written.
(I got a 1-week turn-around on my order.) I put a little intro in
the distribution kit; with that and the on-line help you can get
started.
There is also a copy of SMP available over the network (but not
copyable - again a large license fee is involved) but it is known
to be somewhat buggy and documentation is much more costly, around
$100. If MAPLE is inadequate for your needs and you want to try
SMP let me know.
