         Mathematics"

The computer algebra  system MACSYMA is both a program  and  a 
programming language with a wide range of  capabilities in the 
performance   of   symbolic   (i.e.,  not  strictly   numeric)  
mathematical  manipulations.   Some  of  the  algorithmic  and 
heuristic features of 

o Simplification
o Integration
o Limits
o Taylor Series
o Solution of Algebraic, other Non-Linear,
  and Ordinary Differential Equations

will be discussed with examples.

Sample  calculations  in  Asymptotic Analysis, Thermodynamics, 
Electro-Magnetism, and Semiconductor Physics will be given  to 
show MACSYMA's utility.   A question and answer  period before 
lunch,  and a live  demonstration  of  MACSYMA after lunch are
planned.



Mr. Harten  received  his  M.S. degree in Physics in 1980 from 
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.   He  has  used the 
MACSYMA  program  for  more  than  8  years  in  research  and 
education.    He   co-founded   Paradigm   Associates,    Inc. 
(Cambridge, MA)  in 1981 to  provide MACSYMA-related services,
and is currently the Vice President and Director of Consulting 
Services.   Paradigm  is presently engaged in: maintaining and
enhancing  DOE-MACSYMA  under contract to the US Department of
Energy;  consulting  and teaching  activities  in MACSYMA; and
publishing the MACSYMA APPLICATIONS NEWSLETTER.
