364.0. "MACSYMA avalable on MicroVAX?" by JRDV01::NAKASE () Sun Oct 20 1985 21:37
I would like to know if there is a UNIX version of MACSYMA which runs
on 4.2 BSD with MacroVAX.
A professor of Math Department of Gakushuin University in Tokyo, who was
my seminar instructor when I was a student, is now finding a minicomputer
for mathematical formula processing.
The candidates are
- Toshiba, UX-700, with UNIX System V
- DEC, MicroVAX II, with ULTRIX-32m or UNIX 4.2 BSD
REDUCE is available on Toshiba's machine. Moreover Toshiba proposed high
discount rate. But if MACSYMA runs on MicroVAX II, he will buy MicroVAX II.
Gakushuin University has influential power over Mathematics Society in Japan.
Several other universities will follow after them.
I am not a salesman but I want to help our weak sales!
I need someone's help. Thanks in advance.

| I would think that MACSYMA (or VAXIMA) should run on a microvax.
You should call SYMBOLICS, Inc. and ask them. They're located
in Cambridge, Mass.

| You ought to check out SMP (Symbolic Math Processor) from Inference Corp.
(DEC has a joint marketing arrangement with them.) SMP is equivalent in
capability with MAXSYMA but is implemented in C and runs a great deal faster
than MAXSYMA. For details, contact Large Systems Marketing in Marlboro.
Either of these systems would probably run well on the newer small VAXen,
but not on a uVAX I - not enough memory. They run about 2.5 megabytes
(5000+ disk blocks) each. Both UNIX and VMS versions of each are available.
