Here is a problem from Harry Hochstadt:
Is the matrix
0 1 0 1

similar to some matrix of the form
0 1 a 0
1 0 1 b
a 1 0 1 ?
0 b 1 0
More generally, start with a symmetric tri-diagonal matrix. Add a 1
at the bottom left and upper right. Is the resulting matrix similar
to some symmetric pendiagonal matrix? (A pendiagonal matrix is one in which
all entries are 0 except for the 5 diagonals centered about the main
diagonal.)
