A vicious rumor was related to me at a Thanksgiving party,
that a Japanese mathematician has proved the Riemann hypothesis.
The person relating the rumor seemed sober, but did not claim to
have read the paper.

Louis de Branges (who proved the Bieberbach conjecture  4 or 5
years ago) has been working on the Riemann Hypothesis for several
years, and recently circulated a manuscript claiming to prove it.
However, a crucial error was detected, and (as of July 14) de Branges
has officially withdrawn his claim.  He is continuing to work
on the problem.
