VAX-11 COMMON RUN TIME LIBRARY
Digital Equipment Corporation

Thank you for agreeing to take part in this VAX-11 Common Run
Time Library mathematics manual questionaire. Digital Equipment
Corporation would like to ascertain both the need for such a manual
and, if such a manual is desireable, its contents. Digital Equipment
Corporation can not promise to produce a math manual nor can they
promise to implement any of the suggestions obtained by this
questionaire if such a manual is produced.
1.0 Are you familiar with any math manuals from other vendors?
o If yes, what is good about them?
o What is bad about them?

2.0 Organizational Information.
o How would you use such a book (Quick reference, etc)?
o How frequently would you use this book?
o How would you like the material arranged? Should the
routines be presented in an alphabetic order or should they
be grouped according to some schema? Any suggestions for a
schema that should be followed?
o Should all of the math routines be included? That is, should
functions such as DIM, SIGN, and PROD be included?
3.0 Is it sufficient for us to make a statement about the accuracy of
each math routine or would you prefer some documentation.
o If documentation is desired, what form should it take?
o Have you considered which, if any, of the following you would
like to see?
- An error analysis section for each routine that is based
only upon a mathematical analysis of the routine.

- An error analysis section for each routine that is based
only upon error plots. The error plots would contain
MEAN, RMS, and MAXIMUM least significant bit errors.
- An error analysis section for each routine that is based
upon both a mathematical analysis of the routine and
error plots.
- None of the three (3) above are necessary.
o Would you be interested in seeing samples of the error plots
used to obtain/verify the error bounds? The entire error
plot or only the worst cases?
o Should a detailed error analysis be undertaken for each data
type (F, D, G, and H floating)? Only some of the data types?
4.0 Would you be interested in performance information?
5.0 Any other suggestions?

6.0 If Digital were to produce such a manual, it would most likely be
offered for separate purchase and not as a part of the base
documentation set. Would you be willing to purchase this manual
separately?
o Does this influence what you would want to see in a manual,
since the more material that is included, the higher the
price.
o That is, what would you keep/omit?
Once again Digital Equipment Corporation would like to thank you for
taking the time to answer this questionaire.
