Welcome to MATH.NOT. Many of us working for DEC were once mathematicians (or still are!) but are doing something else now for a living (like programming). This notes file is to let us continue our interest in mathematics. Use this file to spread the word about interesting new developments in mathematics, to ask questions or propose puzzles. If you are actually doing something mathematical for DEC, let us know. If you are writing math programs for your own fun, let us know too. Rules ----- 1. This notes file is intended for serious discussions only. No chit-chat please. If you have something to say to a contributor that will not be of general interest to those people following these notes, then you would be better off sending mail directly to that contributor. 2. No DEC-confidential items should be disclosed in here. If you need help with some math problem related to a company-confidential item, submit a general summary of the problem and suggest interested parties get in touch with you directly. 3. Kindly avoid submitting puzzles with little or no mathematics content. 4. If you submit a math problem, be sure to make it clear whether you are looking for a solution to this problem or if you are just submitting it to this file for the general edification of the other readers. (Give sources if known.) 5. Do not include long computer programs as notes. Use pointers instead.
