887.1 | Here's what I did... | STOWOA::NEWBERG | | Tue May 16 1995 17:27 | 48 |
| Dear Helpless (I sound like Ann Landers!),
I understand what you are going through. It took me about 7 years from
the time I hated my weight until the time I was committed to doing
something about it. I was scared because I never had a goal of any kind
in my life and I had no idea if I could make it. What got me moving was
seeing several people at work go through the WW@W program and come out
several sizes smaller. It was several cycles of the program after that
until I actually signed up. It turned out to be the best thing I ever
did. I lost almost 30 pounds and it was too much and I had to put some
back on. I have been fluctuating a few pounds either way, but have
generally maintained for 5 years.
Here's what it did for me...by going once a week it helped raise the
priority in my mind. It educated me to an eating program that is proven
to be successful and is easy to get back into if those few extra pounds
show up again. It doesn't make you give up the foods you love and helps
you fit them into your eating plan. It gives token rewards at 10 pound
intervals.
The last one is one of the better benefits, because you don't have to
look at one weight loss of, say, 30 pounds, but a journey with 10 pound
markers along the way.
What you might want to do is go to one of these meetings and find out
what the target weight range is for your height and bone structure. You
may find that the high end of the range is actually a lot less than 30
pounds away from your current weight. Once you get to the top of the
range you can assess for yourself whether or not you want or need to
continue to lose or to go onto a maintenance program.
You could struggle along alone for a while longer or try a group
environment where there are people in similar situations, facing the
same kinds of issues with varying degrees of success. I was always
amazed at the insights of my fellow strugglers and I would file all the
tricks and hints they provided. I still use them.
I found my old progress card the other day. I was amazed to see that I
had lost 12 pounds in the first month and then averaged 1 pound a week
after that. I even lost weight on maintenance! I couldn't wait to go to
these meetings to see my progress. It was such a high. After that I
felt I could do anything. I've done a lot with my life since then and
food isn't nearly as important or pressing an issue as it used to be.
Just my opinion and experience.
Good luck!
Amy

| a couple other ideas:
OA for support and guidence.
My wife and I went to a hpnotist 3 wks ago. She's lost 10lbs, I've
lost 6inches on the waist. We have a long road to go.
In addition to hyposis, they first did a lecture on nutrition.
Outlined a plan.
-NO sugar, NO artifical sugar, NO caffine, 20% fat or less. multiple
smaller meals. btw, we look at fat calories, not %fat on label.
exercise.
we listed our food enemies- those foods we really liked. during the
hyposis, a suggestion was left that we don't like those foods.
It works. It's the basics that everyone knows. but this time it seems
really easier. I have no cravings for the bad foods, and there is no
hunger. This is a diet that we can really live on.
this has become more a game, the focus has changed to planning and
preparation vs the actual eating be anti-climatic.
other side benifits for us is the extra time to talk we have as we go
on nightly walks.

887.3 | Believe in yourself | PARVAX::BENNETT | Butterfly | Fri May 19 1995 16:52 | 35 |
| Hi,
I have to agree with .1.
I have always been a thin person and then after I turned 30 the weight
slowly caught up with me. I wasn't overweight on their scale but I was
20 lbs overweight to me and my husband. It got to the point that I
didn't like to change my close because I felt fat! I couldn't stand
the feeling of wearing jeans because I felt fat! My self esteem was
lower and last summer I hated wearing a bathing suit without shorts
because I felt fat!
Finally, I was sick of feeling fat! On New Years I made a resolution
to lose the weight. I couldn't do it on my own, I thought that if I
snuck food when people weren't looking then it didn't count. I also
thought that by just walking the fat would come off.
In Feb. I decided to joing Weight Watchers and see what it was all
about. I was real surprised and embarrassed that I really never
learned about nutrition and portion control. I enjoyed going to the
meetings not only see my success but to learn more about nutrition.
After about 4 weeks I got my 10 lb ribbon and I was thrilled. Not only
was I learning how to eat, losing weight, but my health resistance
improved. People would catch colds and I would not catch them. I felt
good!
Well, I am now down those 20 lbs and I feel great.
The incentive that you need is your self esteem! If your self esteem
is low just try WW and I can guarentee that you will feel great
physically and mentally.
Good luck,
Bethany

887.4 | Herbal Energizer to the rescue! | USAT05::BELLC | | Mon May 22 1995 21:36 | 15 |
| Hi,
My mother went to a hypnotist to quit smoking, and it was successful
for approx a month. Don't waste your time or money on a hypnotist.
However, on a different note, I use to be a chronic junk food eater,
and through the Herbal Energizer product, my appetite has curbed
drastically. I went down from a size 10 to a size 6. And I like
it becaue its all natural (11 herbs and 1 mineral...see note 882.19
for ingredients.)
Hope that helps

887.6 | it can work | NPSS::ICANDO::BADGER | Can DO! | Wed May 24 1995 18:36 | 16 |
| re .4, don't discount the hypnostist just because it didn't work for
one person. It's no magic cureall or magic pill. You still have to
work and WANT it. and, the suggestions by the hypnotist do wear off,
and need to be 'recharged'. We were supplied a tape to use 4*week for
'recharging'.
I an not a hypnostist, nor do I sell the services.
in three weeks I've lost over 6 inches, the wife over ten pounds.
we're happy, feeling good.
one of the little things we gave up was diet Coke. We went through 2
cases a week. since it has caffine and artifical sweeteners, it was on
our NO list. The night we returned from the session, my wife went to
get a can by habit, and the first sips made her sick. we haven't
touched a can since, nor have any desire.

887.7 | Going well with WW | POLAR::ROBERTSON | | Wed Jun 07 1995 22:07 | 14 |
| Just wanted to let you know that things are going well now for me. I
signed up for Weight Watchers a couple of weeks ago on the fat and
fiber plan. I'm down 5 pounds now and I'm going to keep going. For
weeks and weeks of the struggle of wanting to lose weight, I finally made up
my mind. Instead of struggling and thinking about it all the time, it
was time to do something about it. So I did. Thanks for all of your
suggestions. I feel alot better.
Thanks,
Hopeful instead of Helpless

887.8 | I heard a sigh of relief out there | STOWOA::NEWBERG | | Thu Jun 08 1995 15:40 | 18 |
| Great news! Deciding to do it is sometimes the hardest part.
You may want to post your progress in the Progress conference.
A word of caution about comparing notes about actual losses with other
WW people...since they have developed the two different plans some of
the groups notice that those on the fat and fiber plan tend to lose
slightly more slowly than those on the more structured plan. The reason
is that, generally (and your mileage may vary) there are more calories
involved when trying to reach the amount of recommended fiber,
especially when using packaged foods like cereal. However, the success
rate with the fat and fiber plan is pretty high because for some it is
a more natural food plan than the exchange program.
Remember, the slower you take it off, the higher the likelihood that
you are actually changing your eating behaviors for life.
Keep in touch and ask again if you feel like you're losing focus.

887.9 | ME, Too! | MANM01::CABOTAJE | | Mon Oct 30 1995 03:48 | 14 |
| Hi,
I am also one of the many who wanted to take off 20 pounds in me. I
wanted to join the weight-watchers program but there's none here. Can I
do it electronically? I am glad to have this conference. I suddenly
found new friends whom I can share my hardships with. I am reading and
learning from it.
Yes, I agree that in order to lose weight needs will power,
determination and support from others. I have the two but support, I
don't get it. Sometimes I was even ridiculed. When I found your
conference I felt I now have a team to join.
Please let me know what I should do. Thanks and cheers!

887.10 | Welcome ... | MARVIN::CROWLE | Seek not answers; live the questions | Tue Oct 31 1995 12:30 | 25 |
| Welcome!
Yes, it's good to have some support. Try not to let other people
undermine your determination and will power! People who don't want or
need to lose any weight sometimes find it hard to understand the
difficulties of those who do. Even well-meaning friends can make
demotivating remarks sometimes - like "Why are you dieting? You look
fine, you don't need to lose weight!" Well, the scales and those
tables of recommended weights and heights tell me otherwise.
Can you join Weight Watchers electronically? Not exactly, as far as I
know. There used to be a notesfile called PROGRESS, in which dieters
would report from time to time on how they were getting on. It was
quite popular a few years ago, but then became less active and recently
seems to have disappeared. I guess if there were enough interest it
could be restarted.
If it's any help, I'm in roughly the same situation as you, with about
18 pounds to lose. I've lost 18 since last May, but just lately havn't
quite gotten my act together to lose the rest. It's so easy to slip
back and give in to the old temptations!
Good luck, drop by here from time to time, won't you?
Brian
