There are also some foods which raise the metabolism
sufficently to be considered "negative calorie". Certain hot
peppers fall into this category.

| Greg, Know of any other foods that raise the matabolic rate?
Something that can be eaten in qty.

Hi,
This note is a bit late considering when you posted the original. I
actually bought a book about foods which make us lose weight and it's
all about negative calorie foods. Apparently onions are one, I remember
that because I was thinking it was no use for me as they always give me
terrible heartburn.
Anyway, if you would like me to look some other foods up just reply or
mail me and I'll write back.
Bye

883.4 | More about negative calorie food, please. | MRBIL::HAYES | | Tue May 30 1995 21:03 | 8 |
| I for one would love to hear more about negative calorie foods. I
considered buying a book one day, but the price scared me away! If
you'd care to input a few (I know about celery, grapefruit, and now,
thanks to your reply, onions), but would love to know more.
Thanks!

I had considered buying the book also but the price - wow.....

883.6 | Drink and lose weight - well, just a little :-)! | MARVIN::CROWLE | Speak softly, and carry a big stick | Wed Jun 07 1995 17:11 | 18 |
| I'm just wondering what the scientific basis of the negative calorie
rating for these foods might be... hope they can actually deliver what
they promise, though I'm skeptical about that.
There's one "negative calorie" substance that's readily available, of
course. Cold water - with no calories of it's own. Drink a glass of
iced water, and your body is obliged to heat it to 98.4F before
expelling it. This takes energy - not a lot, about 6 Calories for an
8oz. glass. Assuming your body isn't a 100 percent efficient energy
converter, you might have to use more than those 6 Calories heating the
water up - 10 perhaps (guessing here). Then there's the actual
metabolic processes involved ... but I'm no biologist, so can't
speculate on how much energy is involved with those.
People on a high fibre diet, who are generally advised to drink extra
water, might benefit just a little from the iced water treatment!

| It occurs to me to add a caution - please don't go drinking gallons of
iced water, will you - that can be _very_ dangerous!

The basis is that these foods actually DO have calories, but some
property of these foods effectively negates the calories. For example,
the calories required to chew celery sufficiently to swallow it is more
than the calories in the celery. Another example is the hot peppers.
The resulting temporary metabolic rate increase more than consumes the
amount of calories in the peppers.
Simple concepts, but you certainly can not live for long off of
the short list of "negative calorie" foods we have listed so far.

I think you burn 3 calories per stalk of celery.
So, you only need to eat 1166 stalks to lose a pound.
Might want to move your office a little closer to the
restroom, though.

883.10 | 1166 celery stalks? I feel a bit ill already ... :-(! | MARVIN::CROWLE | Speak softly, and carry a big stick | Fri Jun 09 1995 13:23 | 8 |
| Yes, this puts it into context, doesn't it? Only tiny anounts of
energy are involved. Its interesting to compare the 3 negative
calories of the celery stalk with the equivalent energy used in
exercise. For most people, 3 Calories would be used in taking a brisk
walk for just 1 minute! So - move your office a little _further_ from
the restroom, and double your energy output ;-)

Hi,
Sorry it took so long to get back. I'll check out my negative calorie
book and make a note of some of the foods and then post another reply.
Bye
