Herbalife - Questions and Answers
---------------------------------
Prepared by David B. Katzin, M.D., Ph.D.
Chairman of Herbalife's Medical & Scientific Advisory Board
1. What is Herbalife?
Herbalife is a scientifically formulated, herbal-based,
calorie-reduced nutrition program. It is centered around our
unique high-energy, protein-rich, nutritional "shake" or meal
replacement drink, Formula #1, to which has been added food
supplements containing important vitamins, minerals, essential
fatty acids and nutritional herbs. The Herbalife program has
been used for weight control and health enhancement since 1980,
literally by millions of individuals around the world.
2. Do You Lose Weight Because You Skip Meals?
No. Herbalife's calorie-reduced program encourages participants
to eat three meals daily. Two usual meals are in the form of our
nutritionally balanced meal replacement drink, and the third is
any meal of your choice. In addition, Herbalife has devised a
seven-day recommended meal plan which is distributed with its
program. Diets which require people to skip meals are unhealthy
and stimulate binge eating.
3. Is Herbalife A "Liquid Protein" or Starvation Diet?
Definitely not! Herbalife is neither of these. Our program
supplies at least 1000 Calories daily and is nutritionally
complete so individuals can lose weight safely and effectively,
and, just as important, keep the weight off. "Liquid protein"
diets, which use nutritionally unbalanced protein-based drinks,
or starvation diets, which reduce calories so low (less than 500
calories daily) that people literally starve to lose weight, are
both extremely unhealthy and have less than 20% long-term
success.
4. How Does Herbalife Work?
Herbalife supplies all the balanced nutrition the body needs on a
daily basis. Individuals, who choose to, can lose excess weight
by reducing excess calories without sacrificing important
nutrients like protein, potassium and iron. As a result, they
feel their best while they lose both excess weight and inches.
5. Is Herbalife "Natural"?
The Herbalife program is based entirely on nutrition and herbs.
The program does not use drugs, medications, hormones or other
synthetic agents to promote weight loss. All ingredients in the
Herbalife program must fulfill three important conditions:
purity, potency and stability. This is how we maintain the high
level of quality associated with the Herbalife name.
6. What Causes The Feeling Of Increased Energy? Is It Caffeine?
The weight loss and energy-enhancing effects of Herbalife are the
result of its scientifically balanced nutritional formula. They
are not due to caffeine or any natural or synthetic stimulant.
Herbalife's 100% herbal guarana product contains pure guarana
which has a naturally occurring caffeine content of about 30 mg.
per tablet (the same amount of caffeine as a small cola drink).
No chemical caffeine is added to our guarana product, and there
is absolutely no caffeine in any other Herbalife product.
7. Are The Vitamin Levels, Like Vitamin A, High? Are They Safe?
The levels of vitamins and minerals in all Herbalife formulas are
carefully designed to assure that individuals consuming them will
not develop deficiencies or excesses. All of our formulas are
created to assure that all individuals, regardless of their
nutritional needs, receive optimum nutrition. Studies
demonstrate that there are no "buildup" of vitamins or minerals
associated with the use of Herbalife products, including Vitamin A.
In formulating Herbalife products, we have taken special care to
assure that Vitamin A levels are completely safe and never lead to
accumulation, even when consumed together with a diet rich in
Vitamin A.
8. What Do The Herbs Do And Are They Safe?
Herbs are nature's bounty. They are rich sources of vitamins,
minerals, fiber and related nutrients essential for good health.
The herbal mixtures used in Herbalife products have been created
by experts to maximize nutritional potency. The herbs are the
highest quality available anywhere in the world and are free of
pesticide residues and other possible contaminants. Tableting of
the herbal mixtures occurs under strict quality control to
assure both purity and safety.
9. Can Everyone Use Herbalife?
Yes. Since Herbalife products are 100% nutritional food
supplements, they are safe for everyone. Certain individuals
including children, pregnant or lactating women, insulin
dependent diabetics and those with compromised kidney function
are advised to consult with their physician before beginning this
or any other weight loss program.
10. Does The FDA Have A Problem With Herbalife? Is It Approved?
In 1986 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration thoroughly
evaluated the Herbalife Program and issued a statement declaring
that all of the Herbalife products were safe. However, the FDA
does not actually approve any nutritional product or food
supplement, only drugs, medications and medical devices. In
addition, whenever Herbalife is introduced into a new country, it
is reviewed by that country's government before it is approved
for importation and distribution.
11. Has The Herbalife Program Been Tested?
Absolutely. The Herbalife program has had extensive clinical
testing in the United States and Great Britain. All of the
studies have demonstrated that Herbalife products are safe and
effective on both the short term and long term basis. In
addition, each batch of Herbalife products is quality-control
tested to ensure product integrity before it is shipped anywhere
in the world.
12. Do Herbalife Distributors Require Professional Training?
No. The Herbalife Weight Control Program has been specifically
designed by experts and doctors in the fields of food technology
and nutritional medicine so that it is completely
self-explanatory and therefore does not require or expect
nutritional expertise on the part of its distributors. However,
the Herbalife Medical and Scientific Advisory Board offers its
distributors extensive nutritional education in the form of
literature, tapes, and seminars.
13. Does The Herbalife Program Change Eating Habits?
Definitely. The Herbalife Program promotes good nutritional
habits like reducing fat, fried foods, salt and sugar in the diet
and increasing fiber and complex carbohydrates. Most important,
Herbalife teaches individuals how to achieve and maintain an
ideal weight. It is a lifetime health program that works for
everyone.
14. Is Exercise A Part Of The Herbalife Program?
Herbalife encourages participants to follow a healthy lifestyle
that includes good nutrition, regular exercise, moderation in the
use of alcohol and avoiding tobacco use. The Herbalife Program
works even if individuals do not or cannot exercise. Many people
cannot exercise because of serious injuries or other health
programs. Even these individuals can use the Herbalife Program to
lose weight successfully.
15. Is There Enough Fluid and Fiber In The Herbalife Program?
Yes. When followed as recommended, the Herbalife Program
provides approximately four pints of liquid and 25 grams of
fiber. This is more than is found in the average diet of
industrialized countries and is the level recommended by health
authorities world-wide. Supplemental fiber tablets are available
for those who wish to further increase their daily fiber intake.
16. Is The Herbalife Program Recommended By Doctors?
Absolutely. Herbalife has a Medical and Scientific Advisory
Board that tests and researches Herbalife products and
continually monitors reports of results sent by customers and
distributors. In addition, many physicians and other
professionals in all parts of the world use Herbalife both in
their personal lives and in their practices.

| Herbalife used to contain laxatives. Do they still? (natural or other)
What EXACTLY is in it?
I've got a bad taste in my mouth after a girl selling the stuff at work
tried to cram it down our throats, and suggested to one of the elderly
men to stop taking his heart medication because "all you need is Herbalife!"
I'm not putting you in this catagory, but it seems like herbalife is
just a natural laxative, ie just another diet pill.

I'll reply in detail tomorrow to your note, however can you tell me
what laxatives used to be in the products? And did you experience
these kinds of problems when using the products in the past?
I am wondering, because since beginning the program (using the main
products from both the Cellular Nutrition and Thermojetic product
lines), I have not experienced any laxative (or diuretic) effects.

>I've got a bad taste in my mouth after a girl selling the stuff at work

I wasn't present during these conversations, so I can't tell you if she
violated the following rules, however just so you know, Herbalife has
formal distributor rules to follow. Given what you wrote, that person
may be in violation of two of the rules of conduct.
In the Distributor's Handbook for Herbalife products, there are
thirteen rules of conduct that distributors must follow, and there
is also an enforcement procedure that deals with any violations of
the rules of conduct that may occur.
Included are the following rules:
Rule 6. Undesirable Selling Practices
------
An Herbalife Distributor shall not engage in high-pressure selling,
but shall always conduct himself [or herself] in a courteous and
considerate manner.
All presentations of Herbalife products must be complete and truthful
including, but not limited to, instructions on the usage directions
and precautions included on the product label and any accompanying
literature.
Rule 11. Medical Claims
-------
No Distributor shall make any medical claims for any Herbalife product.
If a customer is under a physician's care, it is advisable that the
Distributor recommend to the customer that he consult with his
physician before undertaking any changes in his diet, particularly if
a chronic disorder is involved. Persons with heart, liver, or kidney
disorders or are under current medical treatment, should always be
urged to seek the advice of their physician before changing their diets.

|
Two other rules of conduct that may also be of interest:
Rule 3. Customer Complaints
------
A Distributor shall promptly and courteously investigate any customer
complaint and shall take such steps as may be appropriate and necessary
under the circumstances to see that any wrongs are corrected as quickly
as possible.
Rule 4. Refund Policy
------
A Distributor shall honor the Herbalife refund policy by offering the
customer, whenever the circumstances warrant, a full refund, exchange for
a like product, or full credit for exchange with another Herbalife
item, as the customer decides.

My brother was a distributor for Herbalife and gave me a tub of Vanilla
flavour shake and a bottle of vitamins.
I tried it for a week and lost 3lbs and the shake was really delicious
but it would have been too easy to drink more than two a day ! After
the first week I decided to stop using it and go on a 'Food Combining'
diet (as mentioned in a previous note) and lost 14lbs in a month
without ever feeling hungry.
In my opinion the Herbalife diet, along with Slim Fast and the Nestle
equivalent, are fine for people who don't have time to work out a
balanced calorie-controlled diet but in the long run we all need to
know which foods are high in calories so that we can avoid them or, at
least, lower our intake of them.

Re.7
Do you remember which product(s) you were using?
There are many Herbalife products - it's just not one product by
itself. The two main Herbalife product lines are: Cellular Nutrition
and Thermojetics.
The main products in the Cellular Nutrition line are:
Formula 1 - powdered meal replacement (shake)
Formula 2 - multivitamin, multimineral and herbal tablet
Formula 3 - micronutrient and herbal capsule
The main products in the Thermojetics line are:
Thermojetics Green and Beige tablets
Thermojetics Yellow
ThermoBond
I believe the Thermojetics line is less than 7 years old, so what
you were taking probably was not a Thermojetics product.

Re.6
Trevor,
There are now food guides (energy guides) that are available for the
Herbalife products. The summary guide catagorizes foods in three
categories: Anytime, Sometimes, and Never. For those who are
interested in more details, there is an advanced energy guide available.
One difference that most people notice about Herbalife is that when the
body receives its proper supply of nutrients, the 'craving' for certain
junk foods is reduced. Also, according to the Herbalife science board,
the Formula 3 - Cell Activator, works to heal the villi in the intestine
so that nutrients we take in can be more readily and correctly absorbed.
A good friend of mine, and recovering alcoholic, who is just using the
Formula 2 and 3 vitamins/minerals/herbs told me after one week that he
noticed a definite reduction in his cravings for fatty and sweet foods.
Also my friend and supervisor who has lost 44 pounds so far - she used to
eat a bag of popcorn every afternoon because she craved it, and now the
craving is gone.

Re. note 797.1
>I think Thermagetics is the Amway version of the Herbalife stuff.
All Herbalife products (Cellular Nutrition and Thermojetics) are sold
through multi-level marketing channels verses direct retail, so in that
way is similar to the Amway model (and Tupperware, Mary Kay, and so on).
Note - there is a product out that I have seen called 'Thermagetics'
or 'Thermogenics' that is *not* Herbalife Thermojetics. It lists
'aspirin' as one of its ingredients. Herbalife Thermojetics tablets
green and beige tablets contain only herbs.
>If so, I tried it awhile back. And while I did have quite a bit more
>energy, one of the tablets sort of sped up my system -- fast heart
>rate, headaches, sleeplesness, etc. I quit taking it because at the
>time I had high blood pressure and didn't want to take any chances. The
>lady who sold it to me, though, swears by it. (I swear _at_ it.)
The Thermojetics Green and Beige tablets have cautions on their labels
that these products should not be used by people with high blood
pressure, cardiovascular disease, or pregnant or lactating women.
Also on the label it states to use these tablets at mid-morning and
at mid-afternoon. (10am and 3-4pm) The recommended dosage is 1-3 green
tablets and 1 beige tablet.
It is recommended that the green and beige tablets be used together to
provide the energy balance. If you feel too much of an energy burst,
then take an additional beige tablet to offset the excess energy.
>I guess the desperation in me at times outweighs the sensibleness of
>just changing my behavior and attitudes toward food, so I'll usually
>try anything, only to give up or be disappointed pretty quickly.
That is unfortunate.

| how does a product which acts as a a meal replacement, and permits "any
meal of your choice" once a day teach people the good eating habits
they will need to maintain their weight loss?!? A "habit" is learned
by *doing*, not reading or hearing. I think drinking 2 meals a day is
not a healthy habit to learn.
As far as I can tell, nothing separates Herballife from every other
DIET. And diets don't work, because they don't address the reason why
people gained weight in the first place. Diets, ALL of them, have a
95% failure rate -- success isn't measured by how much weight is lost,
but how much is kept off for a long time.
I see people claim that the benefit of programs like these is that
people who don't have time to learn to cook healthy, lowfat meals will
be able to use this "shortcut". Why would someone who doesn't have
time to learn eat right now have more time later?

Can you provide some additional information on this? If you've done
some detailed product comparisons with what you would consider to be
competitive products, I'd be interesting in hearing about your findings.
You can be as specific as you like as I've been reading and studying

Or, if you've had a negative experience with Herbalife products, I'd

Note 90.0 Another Goodbye Digital! 1 reply
CADSYS::VINNIKOVA 43 lines 29-NOV-1993 14:48
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,
my name is Tatyana Vinnikova, and I am leaving Digital on December 31, 1993.
This is very exciting for me because in the middle of my life, I am changing
my career from working as mathematician and computer programmer for more than
21 years, to giving a full chance to my new business as an Independent
Herbalife Distributor.
Herbalife is a 14 year old MLM company reaching for its $1.0B in sales this
year. The company more than doubled its sales during last 3 years, despite
a deep recession in America and Europe.
I started as a client a year ago. I lost 27 lbs. in 10 weeks and I kept it
off! First month in business I made $568.00. That was so easy, everybody
wanted to feel good and lose or gain some weight. I saw the financial
opportunity immediately and worked very hard to make it work for me.
I succeeded to build business part-time during one year, which brings me now
around $5,000 a month. It still less than I make at Digital, but guess what
is going to happen to me if I do it full-time?
One of the most important aspects is excellent product, which provides
preventive nutrition for everybody. It works! Otherwise company sales
wouldn't be growing so fast during those hard times. And I see a lot of
people, grateful to me, for their health benefits and financial opportunity.
I am a Yoga teacher, and I am interested in helping people to reduce stress
in a natural way. I taught Yoga for two and a half years three times a week
at Digital as a volunteer.
I do my Herbalife business in more than 7 countries, and this is incredible
fun. Company train you at your own home, in your own language in 17 countries
in the world by teleconferences network. I am going to Russia in December
for 10 days. This is my first visit since I left Russia 15 years ago!
I've read Steve Ehlers 85.0 note and was very happy for him! I know the
feeling, and I want to share my story with those who are looking for financial
opportunity in another field, or want to improve health in a natural way.
Your future is just beginning. It's up to you to make it work for you.
Jai Bhagwan! Light with you! Tatyana Vinnikova

CADSYS::VINNIKOVA 79 lines 30-DEC-1993 15:11
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everybody,
thank you so much for all your warm words and good luck wishes!
I wish you all a very Happy New Year!
My trip to Russia was great!
I enjoyed working here, and knowing you all. I am on my way to new life, new
career and I look forward to it.
Here is my generic letter with information about my business and what I am
doing. You'll understand the root of my excitement. This business grew out
of a part-time business into a full-time during last year. It expanded so
much that I have to quit my main job. It's not a bad results for a year in
a new field!
My dear friend, December 30 1993
I'd like to share my story with everyone who is interested in a subject to
get a good health or to lose weight.
From my childhood I was overweight. I had a duodenal ulcer, and gallstones,
and last few years I started to experience some joint pains. All those
problems are related to nutrition. I was looking for a natural diet, which
would fit into my life, and help me to become healthy.
Eleven month ago my friend told my about Herbalife products for health and
weight management. I was amazed how he changed in a month using those food
supplements, which are made from natural herbs. He lost 24 lbs., his blood
pressure decreased to normal, his cholesterol dropped from 346 to 214, and he
was a different man. I tried the weight reduction program. In first 10 days
I lost 9 lbs. which I accumulated during last two years. In 10 weeks I lost
27 lbs. It was no fight, it was really easy. But the best thing is that all
my stomach discomforts are gone, my joints are fine. My concentration is high
and even during the day. I forgot a sleepy time after lunch. I need only
5-6 hours of sleep a day, and I function very actively, accomplishing lots of
things during a day.
All those great changes in my health were results from a Cellular Nutrition
Program and Thermojetics. The Cellular Nutrition Program is what it sounds.
I feel that my body does not crave anything, and I do not need to overeat to
get this mysterious something that was missing from food. I used to like a lot
sweets and pastry, it does not tempt me now very much. Every cell is getting
what it needs to help my immune system to do its magic of rejuvenation.
I am a yoga teacher and studied a lot about exercises and nutrition. I found
that Herbalife products changed my nutrition and health for the best.
My husband had an ulcer problem for more than 30 years, no drugs did a
permanent relief. He started Digestive system program with the Cellular
Nutrition. His stomach pain was gone in three days, he lost 15 lbs. and
his weight at 55 is the same as it was when he was 18.
My mom wanted to lose 15 lbs. It was the first diet in her life! She forgot
about the arthritis in her hands, she lost 15 lbs. without any fight in two
months, and what was more important, in a half a year she stopped taking
sleeping pills, after more than 18 years using them every night!
As you guess now, I am in love with Herbalife products, and it has become my
new business, making a very good combination with teaching yoga.
I am leaving Digital to start a new career.

OK - I thought perhaps you were familiar with Herbalife, including the
literature and also using the products for some time.
My view of Herbalife is that it is a system of nutritional products
that can be used in many different ways, and one of those ways is for
weight management (losing, gaining, or maintaining.)
What is your definition of 'diet'?

| That was my impression, too, for the plan that requires a drink as a
substitute for a meal. I think it has been beaten to death in this file
that any food plan that doesn't include food education, but merely
substitutes for food, isn't a food plan, but a diet. And the general
impression is that diets don't work because the implanting of the idea
of correct eating doesn't happen and can't be sustained. It might work
for a short time for weight loss, but not for weight management. Human
nature takes over eventually.
My advice is it's best not to tread on this one again!

a prescribed system of eating that provides for temporary changes in
eating designed to promote weight loss.
Beyond that I will take Amy's advice and not rehash the diet argument;
I think people who want quick fixes will continue to seek out diet
after diet, and nothing I can say will convince them that the answer is
a permanent change in lifestyle, including eating, and addressing the
issues which caused one to eat in the first place.

Re.16
>that any food plan that doesn't include food education, but merely
>substitutes for food, isn't a food plan, but a diet.
Thanks for the clarification, Amy. I'm new at this, and did not
realize this was a 'hot issue'.
I'm glad to say that Herbalife does provide guides for food education.
This was mentioned briefly in .1, item number 13. There is an Energy
Guide which lists foods in 3 different categories: Anytime, Sometimes,
and Rarely (or Never). There is also an Advanced Energy Guide which
provides a great deal of specific information on various types of
foods.
What is interesting in my situation is that I started using Herbalife
products for nutrition only, since I didn't really need to lose weight.
Yes, I have the slight excess weight in the hips and thighs area, but
even after many years of taking vitamins, minerals, herbs, spending
weeks at a time at a yoga center eating low fat vegetarian diets and
doing yoga and aerobics several times a day, along preparing good meals
for myself at home, and doing exercises every night, and generally
leading a ridiculously healthy lifestyle all around (no alcohol, very
little sugar, etc.), still my weight has remained constant at 143.5
pounds for the last 4-5 years or so.
Two months ago when I started taking Herbalife Thermojetics, I felt a
small energy increase. Then I added the Formula 1 (shake), Formula 2
and Formula 3 tablets. I did not replace a meal with the shake...
instead I *added* it to my (um) diet as a late afternoon snack when I
usually do not have anything.
And the most amazing thing was - in that first week, I actually *LOST*
3.5 pounds. Now, it's not supposed to work like that, because adding a
shake is to gain weight. But apparently whatever my body was lacking
was provided in the ingredients, and the weight just melted away. Now
I'm down 5 pounds total and staying steady.

Something I found out last night:
Herbalife provides a phone number for their Scientific Board headed by
Dr. David Katzin, M.D., cardiologist and Ph.D. from UCLA, which your
doctor can call for information. It works like this...
If you have a specific medical condition and would like to try Herbalife
products to help alleviate it (diabetes, asthma, heart, or any condition
especially which is chronic, etc.), you can give your medical doctor this
Herbalife phone number to call, and the doctors at Herbalife will work
with your doctor to provide specific information on how to take the
products for maximum effects.
I have not yet used it via my doctor, so I cannot provide a firsthand
experience. Also, it is my understanding that distributors are not
able to use this number because distributors are not allowed to give
medical advice to clients. Having said that, if you would like to try
to work with your doctor and Herbalife in this way, contact me directly
for the phone number.

In case this is useful, here are some miscellaneous tidbits that
might be pertinent to someone who feels they need to take chromium ...
Chromium is one of the less toxic minerals, so you are probably
relatively safe in experimenting with it in reasonable amounts
(like 50 to 200 uG). Most people get about 30 of that from
food, which is marginally adequate. The 200 uG is approximately
the amount used to treat suspected deficiencies therapeutically
(or about 10 g of yeast).
Chromium is used to form glucose tolerance factor (GTF). GTF is
made up of chromium, nicinamide, glycine, cysteine, and glutamic.
We only need the chromium and the niacin from our food intake, the
rest is formed by the body. However, the GTF form has the advantage
of improved absorption (about 20% for GTF, vs. 1% or 2 % in chromium
chelates or chromium picolinate).
Foods already containing GTF include liver, brewers yeast, and black
pepper.
Our chromium levels tend to drop very significantly with age.
You could in principle find out your chromium level by either getting
a red blood cell chromium test (a research test primarily) or a hair
analysis, but most clinical labs don't do the RBC chromium routinely,
and most of the unregulated labs that do hair and nail analysis are
less reliable.
If you suspect a chromium deficiency, you could reliably verify it by
having a glucose tolerance test done before and after taking chromium.
kind regards,
todd

| I was using the prducts about 2 years ago, and lost about 30lbs, I
loved the program, I felt great, my skin improved, my energy improved,
my whole life changed...I have since regained the weight (due to poor
eating habits, emotional eating etc etc).I have tried to use the
herbalife products since the first time I used them, and no matter what
I try, I can't stomach them. I can't swallow the vitamins, I can't even
smell the shake without wanting to throw up...any suggestions?
Thanks.

Annie,
Which products were you taking the first time? Also, how long were you
on the program (the 2 shakes per day), and did you just stop taking the
products completely once you lost the 30 lbs., or did you cut back
gradually?

Hi,
I was using the Diet Disc formula 1-6 plus I used the aloe Vera
juice on and off for a couple of months. I was on 2 shakes per day for
about 6-8 months. I cut back the program for a couple of weeks after
losing the weight, then due to emotional reasons I stopped it
completely. I don't know why it would suddenly make me feel nausea at
the thought of it, becuase that wasn't the reason I stopped it.
(I have also sent you some to your other address)...
thanks!

Annie,
Hm...I'm wondering - did you try the products again and feel sick from
them, or are you feeling sick by just _thinking_ about the possibility
of taking the products?
I can suggest some novel ways of preparing the shakes differently to
make them more unique and interesting than just mixing them with milk
alone. You can use fruits, different juices...etc. However if the
reaction is from your thoughts alone, then I'm not really sure what I
can recommend to change that. If it is a reaction to your thoughts,
then it isn't the Herbalife products _themselves_ that are making you
sick.
About the Thermojetics line - since you live in Australia, the products
are slightly different there, both for marketing reasons and because
the newer products take time to get approved by the gov't regulatory
bodies of the various countries. So let me try to find out what is
currently being sold in Australia from the Thermojetics line. I'm
fairly certain that the Thermo green/beige herbal set is not yet there,
however the Thermojetics Beverage may be. While it's best to take both
the Cellular Nutrition and the Thermojetics lines together for maximum
effect, you can also use products in the lines separately. Given your
situation, this may be a good alternative for you right now, rather than
the Cellular Nutrition (DietDisc) line (the shakes and vitamins).
We can work on this offline, then see if we can figure out the best
alternatives for you to consider.
Meanwhile, do let me know here whether you're having problems with the
products themselves, or just by thinking about them only.

The second time I tried the products, I felt sick at the thought, and
also actually using them. I could not swallow the shake, and the pills just
kept repeating on me and it left an awful taste in my mouth all day. Maybe is
is all in my mind, but I would like to find a solution
I have been to some of the Distributor meetings, as I was distributing the
products when I first got into it, but lost all motivation and interest.
I have tried the shake in yohghurt, juice, milk, tea, everything I could think
of, but you can't get rid of the taste!!!...I just don't know if I should spend
the money on trying it again..

Annie,
I should have the updated product list for Australia within the next
two days and will see what they are offering from the Thermojetics
line there. Since it's so different from the Cellular Nutrition line,
it may help your particular situation.
There is a 30-day unconditional moneyback guarantee on all Herbalife
products, and I believe this is worldwide (though as a former
distributor there, correct me if this is not the case for Australia).
You just need to return the unused portion to your distributor within
the 30 days and ask for a full refund.

| Well, after much deliberation I decided to try using the herbalife products
again. I am surprised at how easy it all is to get back into. I have been on
the program for about 10 days now and have lost about 4 kg. This is beginning
to slow down. I feel so much more energetic. I have less frequent mood swings
and my whole appetite/food anxiety has been balanced. I don't have cravings for
any chocolate, and I haven't had any junk food since I started on the program.
I have also lost some cm's around my waist and hips. I haven't seen much of a
change in my clothes yet, as I was growing out of my clothes before I decided
to lose weight. I haven't done much exercise as I have been working night shift
and I don't see much daylight. It has also been raining. I feel positive that I
can get the weight off and maintain it this time. I do feel slightly nauseous
but I am assured that it comes from my body eliminating all the crap I've been
feeding it for years. The last time I tried the program, I felt sick when
trying to swallow the shake and vitamins, but this hasn't really bothered me
this time. I suspect it was all a mental block. My skin looks so good, no
blemishes and it's soft and smooth again.

Re.28
That's great news, Annie - congratulations!
Thanks for the reminder too...I should have remembered to mention that
on occasion when initially beginning the program, it is possible to
experience some unpleasant side-effects such as nausea, etc. Unless
you are actually allergic to some of the ingredients (which are clearly
labeled on each container), these side-effects are generally not due to
the Herbalife products themselves. Rather they are the result of the
detoxification of the body itself. This is a good thing actually,
though on the surface it may not appear to be especially while you are
going through the experience.

869.31 | I have had results with Herbalife. | OPCO::OSG_AC | | Wed Mar 22 1995 10:29 | 27 |
| Hello,
Well, I posted a couple of notes in here about 2-3 months ago,
debating whether or not to begin the Herbalife program.
I am one week into my third month on the products. Australia has a
different program to America, due to the different health regulations,
but the results are the same I'm sure.
I have been using the products for 9-10 weeks, and I have lost 10kg in
total. My health has improved tremendously. I am a shiftworker and have
problems with tiredness, fatigue and depression due to lack of sleep...
and from what I've found, also due to poor nutrition. I have decreased at
least by half, my "sad days" , as I call them, and feel much more
energetic and able to cope with daily demands of life.
I have not been strict, I have still eaten Pizza and Chocolate, but
I have automatically decreased the amount and frequency of these kind
of binges. I don't have cravings as often, I don't eat as much, and all
my clothes are starting to fit again.
I don't really understand what percentages are what with the
program, but I do know that I am giving myself a head start with
building better nutrition and a healthier lifestyle.
Just thought I'd comment on what I have experienced through Herbalife.
Annie.

Sounds like you are doing great!!! I remember your notes from before

Are you substituting 2 meals a day with the drink, or are you eating

Annie,
Congratulations! (;^) That's great news!
I managed to get an older copy of the products listing from Australia,
so I'm wondering - which products are you using there? It's possible
that new products are being introduced so quickly that my list may be
outdated by now. Do you have (and are you using) the Formula 3 Cell
Activator?
I don't think the Thermojetics Green and Beige tablets are there yet
(due to marketing timing and also time it takes to get approval for new
products in various countries). You should have the Thermojetics Herbal
Beverage by now though.
Cindy
PS. I've just started using the new Dermajetics Skin Care Survival kit
the products are incredible!

869.35 | this is what we have in Australia | OPCO::OSG_AC | | Wed Mar 22 1995 19:12 | 19 |
| Hello!,
Well, I have the formula 1 shake, formula 2 (B6), Formula 3
(multivitamin & minerals), formula 4 (safflower oil capsules), formula
5 (Vit C), and Formula 6 (Fibrebond), NRG (Natures Raw Guarana) and the
Thermojetics tea. We don't have the thermo tablets, although I think
they would be better than the tea, because I don't think the tea tastes
all that good...not revolting, but not that good either.
Apparently the Dermajetics are being released here this
weekend?..I'm not sure. The Distributor I am buying the products from
is hosting a marketing seminar via sattelite with Mark Hughs this
weekend. Unfortunately, I can't get there.
Nevertheless, my skin is another advertisement for these
products. I forgot how many different improvements I discovered the
first time I used the products.

Thanks, Annie - that's interesting! Here's are the comparisons as I
understand them (though you might also check your ingredients with
the ones I posted in .30):
- Formula 1 is the same (or close to).
- Our Formula 2 matches your Formula 3, and you don't have
our Formula 3 Cell Activator (yet...Europe doesn't have it
either).
- We don't have your equivalent of Formula 2 or Formula 4,
however the B6 and C may be included in our Formula 2 already.
- Formula 6 (Fibrebond) is probably either our Activated Fiber,
or ThermoBond, or a combination of the two.
- We have NRG too, along with an NRG tea in addition to the
Thermojetics tea. I like the flavor of both, myself.
One goal that the company has, I believe, is to eventually make the
products in all countries the same, which would make things a lot
easier. It will take some time though.
I'm sure you'll really like the Dermajetics products. Last week the
Senior VP of the new division, Janet Levine, was in Boston and gave
us an in-depth presentation. She said that the hypoallergenic
allowance for reactions in the market is 5%, and Dermajetics comes in
at .03%. I'll post more information when time allows.
Yes, there is a worldwide satellite broadcast scheduled for this
Saturday - 3.5 hours of intensive training with Mark Hughes and
many of the top people. Our receiving site is in Cambridge, Mass.,
and I'm planning on attending. Should be great!
Latest stats: Herbalife is now the 6th fastest growing company in
the world, publicly-held, with revenues of $900 million (USD) in 1994,
(up from $700,000 in 1993), and 750,000 distributors in 24 countries.

The Herbalife Beginning
-----------------------
The mother of Mark Hughes, president and founder of Herbalife, became
addicted to prescription diet pills while trying to lose weight for many
years, and when Mark was 18 years old, she died of an accidental overdose.
Since that time, Mark has been researching ways to help people improve
their health through good nutrition and to safely lose, gain and maintain
weight safely and effectively.
Herbalife International
-----------------------
After several years of research and development, Mark launched Herbalife
15 years ago, in February 1980. Sales that first month were $23,000, and
at the end of the year, sales totaled $2 million. At the end of 1993,
sales were $700 million, and at the end of 1994, sales grew to $900
million. Herbalife is now the 6th fastest growing company in the world.
Herbalife is based in Los Angeles, California, and now has over 750,000
independent distributors in 24 countries. Herbalife is a publicly-held
company traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange, and is a member of the
Direct Selling Association (DSA). In 1994, Herbalife was rated #1 on
the Los Angeles Times '100 Best Performing Companies in California' list.
Herbalife Product Introductions
-------------------------------
In 1991, Herbalife did $190 million in sales, selling primarily basic
weight management and nutrition products.
In 1992, the Cell Activator (Formula 3) was introduced. This product
increases absorption of nutrients. Sales jumped to $420 million.
In 1993, Herbalife introduced Thermojetics, an herbal-based supplement
line which provides energy. Sales jumped to $700 million.
This year, in February 1995, Herbalife introduced the new Dermajetics
division which announced their first set of products - the Skin Care
Survival Kit. In the first 7 days, $10 million dollars were sold, and
sales continue to climb. The products are being manufactured in France
exclusively for Herbalife.
On April 22nd, there are 6 new Dermajetics products being announced and
released!
Herbalife Marketing Plan
------------------------
There are 5 avenues of income:
1. Retail Profit: As a distributor, you can earn between 25% and 42%
on retail sales. As a supervisor, you can earn 50% on retail sales.
2. Wholesale Profit: As a distributor or a supervisor, you earn
between 8% and 25% on the distributors you sponsor.
3. Royalty Overrides: As a supervisor, you earn 5% on all supervisors
3 levels deep. If any one supervisor is inactive, you earn on the
next level down.
4. Management Team Bonuses: Once your Royalty Override is greater than
$1000, you become part of the Management Team. There are three levels.
A. Entry Level Management position - Global Expansion Team (GET).
At this level, you receive an extra 2% on total sales of your
supervisors who are not part of the management team, regardless
how wide and deep your organization is. Estimated income range
is: $1,000-$15,000 per month.
B. Middle Management Position - Millionaire Team (Mil Team). You
can earn an extra 2-4% bonus on your organization, regardless of
organizational width and depth. Estimated income range is:
$4,000-$25,000 per month.
C. Senior Management Position - President Team. As a President Team
member, you receive an extra 2-4-6% on your entire organization.
Estimated income per month is: $10,000-$200,000 per month.
5. World-Wide Profit Sharing - As a President Team member sponsoring
other President Team members, you become eligible to participate in
world-wide profit sharing. Three people last year received checks
for $600,000 each. There were 25 checks given as bonuses last year.
NOTE - with $900 million in annual sales, and over 750,000 distributors
worldwide, there are now over 600 distributors earning over
$100,000 per year!

As of today, I've lost 12 lbs. using Herbalife products (and still
not replaced any meals with the shake to lose this weight).
I began at 145 lbs. last September, and am now down to 133 lbs. Now,
none of last year's clothes fit anymore. In fact, none of my clothes
from the last 7 years fit anymore. Even jeans I bought 2 months
ago don't fit anymore. (;^)

| Hey!....
As of Yesterday, I hit the same goal (ie 12KG ) with Herbalife.....
I am following the program (sort of), and I have another 12 or so to
go, but I also have loose clothes!..and a bunch of clothes that fit!
This stuff WORKS!

Last night for the first time in a year, I went to my massage therapist
to have a massage (also a good friend) and she could not believe how well
the Herbalife products have worked for me. Even more than the weight
loss itself, she said she could not find any cellulite (where I used to
have quite a bit), and was amazed at the inches I've lost as well.
So she's now trying the products too. (;^)

Annie,
Stay with it. I've been on 3 plateaus now, and have been successful
in riding them out. It can be disappointing during those times, however
they really don't last forever...just seems that way.
And be wary of cheating. You know the saying - if you 'almost' stick
to the plan, then you'll 'almost' lose the weight...(;^)
You might consider adding another product that you're not already
taking - something like Cell-U-Loss, Herbal-Aloe, etc.,for example.
Adding another product at a plateau has helped me and a few people I
know to get beyond them.

Cindy,
Do you have any information on distributors in England - I fancy a go
at this - taking it not distributing it!
The only question I have is that I have tried slim fast etc and I get
an instant headache from it. I do have to stay off of all additives
and also foods that contain tyronene. Does herbalife have this product
(natural I think) in it?
Thanks in advance.
Hope therre is still someone reading this 8>)

Marie,
Yes, there are distributors in England, and you might check the phone
books there - sometimes distributors do list in them. If you can't
find a contact, I'll try to find one for you.
The shake powder mixes do not contain a lot of the additives found in
other products (especially Nutrasweet/aspartame...rather the base
sweetener is fructose, per shake the equivalent of a small apple),
however if you're really sensitive, I'd suggest the Kosher (Vanilla)
formula...that is specially made without additives. You'll probably
have to request it specifically though, since it may not be in the
catalogs there.

| It seems, though, that it's taken almost a year for you to lose the 16
lbs., maybe Herbalife didn't have as much to do with the weight loss as
you think.

That's because I've never replaced any meals with shakes. If I had
replaced 2 meals with shakes, I could have lost it a lot faster.
I never started taking Herbalife to lose weight originally. My only
reason for switching was because their vitamin/mineral/herbal
formulations impressed me, and it turned out to be cheaper for me
to use their products over the amount of money I was spending in
the local healthfood store for supplements.
The week I switched to the Herbalife supplements was the week I lost
3.5 pounds, and that was with eating 3 regular meals per day and
actually adding a shake in the late afternoon. So essentially these
worked on me in spite of myself. Beyond switching to Herbalife over
my other supplements, I did not vary one other aspect of my life in
terms of diet, exercise, and so forth.
Last week I put on a nice pair of wool pants that I haven't fit into
in almost 15 years. Fortunately that style is 'in' again. (;^)
>Skeptic -Tried them all,
So then you tried Herbalife? What was your experience?
Cindy
PS. I've now lost 20 pounds as of this last weekend.

| Herbalife Thermagetics sounded like the answer for me to get back to
good health. I had been on antibiotics longterm and got a brochure in
the mail about all of the benefits of their products and it was
guaranteed. I called the 800#, left a voicemail, a week goes by with
no response. So, I call the 800# again and leave another message. A
few days later, a rep calls me and we have a very pleasant
conversation, discuss my health and weight problems, and I order the
green & beige tablets. If for any reason I am dissatisfied, full
refunds are guaranteed. So, I take the risk - and very excited about
achieving positive results with this product - sounds perfect for me.
Next day another rep calls and I say that I already ordered, we talk,
again a nice conversation. This person says that I should have ordered
some of the products to clean out my system, etc so that the formula
works better. We chat some more - I really like this person and they
are trying so hard - I'm really convinced that this is THE answer I've
been looking for. I order some of the other products and another
30-day supply of the green/beige formula.
After three weeks or so, there is NO change at all. I call one of the
rep and they suggest that I keep up with it and try another product
that may help it work. They really want this to work for me. I
mention that 30-days is almost up for the refund and they want me to
try a little longer. At least I contacted them within the 30 days.
Six weeks goes by and I feel like I wasted a lot of money, contact the
first rep and ask for a refund - she sends me the form to return the
empty or unused portion. I process that - a week later she calls me
back yelling that she despises customers like me that try to take
advantage of a refund and she found out they I ordered from anther rep
and what am I trying to pull.......
It took several letters direct to Herbalife just to get half of the
money that I spent on these products.
About six months ago, I tried another herbal product from a different
company, didn't work & my refund request came back undelivered because
the company no longer exists.
I seem to have negative results with weight-loss products and the
guarantees usually mean nothing. I need a reputable
herbal/vitamin/nutrient product to help my body recover from a
struggle with lyme disease and being on antibiotics. I've come up with
my own vitamin and protein supplement concoction which has helped
tremendously.

That's unfortunate. There are some 'bad apples' in every business,
and it appears you came across them.
Knowing your situation now, I would have suggested a different set
of products altogether, and never would have treated you like that
regarding the refund, since that's a company policy.
Also, because you have a medical preexisting condition, a call from
your doctor to the the office of the scientific board of Herbalife
(Dr. David Katzin) would have definitely been in order to see what
products would best suit your situation.

I've now lost 24 pounds - down to 121 from 145 - and yesterday managed
to fit into a size 4 pair of jeans...down from a size 12/14 in the same
style and brand (L.L.Bean Relaxed Fit) just over 2 years ago. (Almost
all of my excess weight was from the waist down, which accounts for the
dramatic decrease in pant size.)
I don't recall exactly what my weight was in high school 21 years ago,
however I think I'm finally back to that weight again. I almost can't
believe it...like it's too good to be true.

I started on the herbalife basic weight managment program in the
beginning of January '97. After the first month I had lost a few
pounds and notice I had lots on energy and just felt much better.
I always seem to have headaches all the time but now they seem to
have gone away since I've been on the program for a month. I didn't
follow the program exactly according to there plan. So in February
I decided to follow the plan. I replaced two meals a day with
the nutrition shake (the recipes taste great) and took the supplements
three times a day. I also use a treadmill every other day for about
25 minutes on a fast walk. At the end of February I was down 16 lbs and
my waist size dropped from 39" to 37". The first week in March I did'nt
follow the plan but still continued taking the shakes and
supplements and I maintained my weight. The second week I went back
on the plan and lost another 4 lbs to date (down 20 lbs). This week
I had my annual medical physical. My doctor was impressed at my weight
loss and what was most exciting he took me off of the high blood
pressure medication I was on. He has been working on me for a while
to loose weight. My doctor is going to be monitoring my blood
pressure over the next several months so we'll see how I do. My
goal is to loose another 15 lbs. I'll Keep a post on my progress.
I still feel great and am very happy with all the renewed energy
I have. My wife is keep me busy around the house with lots of
projects now that she see the change in me. If anyone has any questions
on the program feel free to give me a call.
Regards
Steve

PS. I've been trying lots of programs to loose weight for several
years because of the high blood pressure. I'm glad I found one
that really works. Thankyou Herbalife!
