| From the only expert I know (my mom):
After you wash the lettuce, wrap it in a paper towel (loosely) and put
in a plastic bag in the fridge. It keeps for at least a week this way.
I don't know about breaking it up first; we just keep the entire head
of lettuce and break off as we need it.

848.2 | try washing only what you need for that day! | RETRET::HATCH | | Wed Mar 09 1994 16:21 | 11 |
| Hi
My mom says that if she only washes the pieces she is ready to use
that night it lasts longer and that if it is all washed and not used
right away it spoils in no time at all. I hope this helps

| I buy a head of lettuce and it is usually good for a weeks worth of salads.
I make three day's salads at once, directly into one portion tupperware
bowls (saves time and effort.) I only wash what I'm going to use. The
rest I keep in a Tupperware lettuce keeper - the kind that allows moisure
to accumulate at the bottom without it getting on the lettuce head.
BTW, here's a trick for you salad-eaters: plastic film cannisters
hold just about 2 Tablespoons of dressing - for an easy, portable, non-soggy
salad! (Kodak works better than Fugi.)

| That was cute, D!
I also had that problem with lettuce and salads, and started buying
ready made salads like Fresh Express or Dole. I have had a bag in my
refrigerator for over a week now, and it is still good. By trial and
error, I learned that transferring the contents into a tupperware container
made the salad go bad faster than just leaving it in the plastic bag it
came in and twist tying it along the way.

848.6 | paper towel and upside down bowl | MSDOA::GUY | Do you really read this? | Wed Apr 27 1994 21:09 | 8 |
| This is one way to keep it fresh.....
wash, drain and tear your lettuce up into bite size pieces.....
put in an air tight bowl put a paper towel on top on the lettuce,
put the top on and put upside down in your refrigerator. when you open
the bowl, the paper towel will have absorbed the water and your lettuce
will still be crisp. replace towel as needed.....
thanks and happy salading.....
