803.1 | Books that I would recommend. | MARVA1::EBARON | Evelyn Baron | Wed May 05 1993 19:22 | 20 |
| I have 2 books that contain this information:
Nutritive Value of American Foods
published by the US government printing office and can be obtained
from their bookstores, or I believe, through the mail from Pueblo, CO.
I think it cost about $8 - 10. This is very complete in terms of
calories, protein, fat, carbs and some vitamin and mineral content
of most common foods. It does not give brand names, just generic foods.
This book is an 8.5 X 11 format.
The second book I just got a week ago. I was looking for a more pocket
size version of the aforementioned book. I can't remember the name
but it is something like Complete Food Counts. There were also versions
of this book that showed just fat counts, or just carbohydrate counts.
The one I got shows calories, fat, protein and carbs. This book is
almost too complete. It gives the information for generic foods as
well as by brand name. I will check the title and author tonight and
post it tomorrow.

803.2 | many many | GOLLY::CARROLL | the stillness shall be the dancing | Wed May 05 1993 19:28 | 14 |
| There are many books, ranging from little pocket guides for $2 with
only that information about some stable foods, to mega books with all
the nutritional information of hundreds of thousands of books.
I have what I believe is the most complete book - Corinne T Netzer's
Encyclopedia of Food Values, a large hardcover book that cost $25. It
has calorie, fat (incl saturated fat), cholesterol, carbohydrate,
protein, fiber and vitamin counts for many foods, including foods from
chain restaraunts and prepared commercial foods.
Check the "nutrition" section of your local bookstore. I found a very
good selection at Barnes and Noble in Nashua, NH.

I've got a book called "The FAT book". I don't recall the author
off-hand, but it's got a red, orange, and yellow striped cover.
It's a paperback that costs $5.95. I've seen it at many
bookstores.
It lists serving size, Calories, Fat (grams) and Percent Calories
from fat.
It lists brand name foods, generic foods (meats, vegetables, etc),
fast foods, and also lists "Standard Home Recipe" or "Standard USDA
Recipe" for items such as Chili or Pancakes.
I love it. I just gave a copy to a friend as a birthday gift.
